SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, causing delays of some commuter trains. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the 11:42 am quake was centered 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of San Jose at a depth of about 4 miles (6 kilometers). The area is hill country about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of downtown San Francisco.

Lucy Jones, a veteran California seismologist, told KNTV-TV that the quake happened on the Calaveras fault, one of eight major faults in the Bay Area.

“The Calaveras fault is one that tends to have smaller earthquakes,” Jones said.

It was the largest earthquake in the Bay Area since a magnitude 6.0 jolt in the Napa wine country in 2014, Jones said in a social media post.

The 138-mile (220-kilometer) long Calaveras fault is a major branch of the San Andreas fault and runs from San Juan Bautista in the south to San Ramon in the north, Jones said.

Numerous moderate earthquakes have occurred along the Calaveras fault, including the 6.2 Morgan Hill earthquake in 1984, Annemarie Baltay, a seismologist with the US Geological Survey, said in a video statement posted on Twitter.

Rich Constantine, the mayor of Morgan Hill, a city next to San Jose, said he was struck in the kitchen of his home when Tuesday’s “long and steady” quake.

“We had a frame in the house fall, everything was shaking but once it stopped, there was no damage,” he said.

Constantine said Morgan Hill’s City Hall and other city offices were evacuated but that everyone returned to work soon after.

People reported feeling the quake as far south as the scenic Big Sur coast, 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of the epicenter in the region of Joseph Grant Ranch County Park, a huge natural area.

Nearly 100,000 people reported receiving a warning before the shaking started through California’s earthquake early warning system, according to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, or Cal OES.

“Advance notice varied from two seconds for those very near the epicenter to 18 seconds for those in San Francisco,” the agency said.

MyShake, a statewide cellphone app that went live to the general public in late 2019, relies on an earthquake detection and notification system developed by the US Geological Survey and partners.

A 3.1 aftershock followed about 5 minutes later, according to the US Geological Survey.

Several commuter train companies, including Cal Train and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, known as BART, held trains to check for damage. BART returned to normal service by early afternoon.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area late Tuesday morning, rattling buildings and nerves, but thankfully not causing any significant damage or injuries.

The temblor struck at 11:42 am about 9 miles from Seven Trees and 12 miles east of San Jose, according to the US Geological Survey.

A magnitude 3.1 aftershock was reported about 5 minutes later.

A USGS “Did you feel it” map shows the quake was felt as far south as Salinas and as far north as Fairfield, California, north of San Francisco.

The temblor was on the Calaveras fault, which produced a 6.2 magnitude quake in 1984, KTLA sister station KRON reported.

Tuesday’s quake was the largest to hit the Bay Area since 2014’s South Napa earthquake – a magnitude 6.0., seismologist Lucy Jones noted.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center indicated that a tsunami was not expected after the quake.

Rich Constantine, the mayor of Morgan Hill, a city next to San Jose, said he was in the kitchen of his home when the “long and steady” quake struck, the Associated Press reported.

“We had a frame in the house fall, everything was shaking but once it stopped, there was no damage,” he said.

Constantine said Morgan Hill’s City Hall and other city offices were evacuated but that everyone returned to work soon after.

California’s Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local authorities in the Bay Area to evaluate any preliminary damage or issues caused by the quake, the agency said in a tweet.

Several commuter train companies, including Cal Train and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, known as BART, held trains to check for damage. BART returned to normal service by early afternoon, according to KRON.

According to the USGS, the San Francisco Bay Area was shaken awake early Thursday by a magnitude 4.1 earthquake stated in the Geological Survey.

(Photo : Pixabay)

4.1 San Francisco Earthquake

The quake struck at 5:07 am, according to the USGS. The event was concentrated several miles northwest of Bay Point, California, around 21 miles northeast of Berkeley, and 30 miles northeast of downtown San Francisco.

It was discovered at a depth of around 12 kilometers.

The USGS shake map reported tremors throughout the Bay Region and the Sacramento metro area. As of 7:30 am, more than 4,000 individuals had felt the tremor.

The reports all suggested that the intensity was mild or faint.

According to the East Bay Times, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

While the lines are being inspected for damage, trains on the Bay Area Rapid Transit system are moving at a reduced pace.

Earthquakes

When two slabs of the ground abruptly move past one another, an earthquake occurs. The fault or fault plane is the surface where they slide. The hypocenter is the point under the earth’s surface where the earthquake begins, while the epicenter is the position directly above it on the earth’s surface.

Foreshocks can occur during an earthquake. These are lesser earthquakes that occur in the exact location as the following big earthquake. Scientists can’t identify if an earthquake is a foreshock until the main event occurs. The mainshock is the greatest and most powerful earthquake. Aftershocks always follow mainshocks. These are lesser earthquakes that strike around the epicenter of the mainshock. Aftershocks can last for weeks, months, or even years after the mainshock, depending on the size!

The inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust are the four primary layers of the planet. A thin skin covers the surface of our planet, consisting of the crust and the top of the mantle.

However, this skin isn’t all one piece; it’s made up of several sections covering the earth’s surface like a jigsaw. Furthermore, these puzzle pieces continue to move about, sliding past and colliding with one another. These jigsaw pieces are tectonic plates, and the plates’ borders are known as plate boundaries. The plate boundaries are made up of many faults, and most earthquakes occur on these faults across the planet. Because the plates’ edges are rough, they become stuck as the remainder of the plate moves. When the plate has shifted far enough, the margins of one of the faults unstick, and an earthquake occurs.

What to Do During Earthquakes

Take shelter immediately wherever you are when an earthquake strikes. If necessary, take a few steps to a nearby safe location. Stay still until the trembling stops.

Drop under heavy furniture like a table, desk, bed, or another big object.

To avoid being struck by falling items, cover your head and torso.

Hold on to whatever you’re under to keep yourself protected.
