Artisan lover of murdered Queens mother Orsolya Gaal has been handed a love deal that sends him to prison for 25 years and convicts him of manslaughter not murder, despite cutting her to death and stuffing her body in a duffel bag.

David Bonola, 44, accepted a deal from Queens prosecutors meaning he pleads guilty to first-degree manslaughter. On November 19 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

After his release – which could happen sooner with good behavior – he will be cared for for five years.

Gaal’s family has yet to comment publicly on the verdict, but the prosecutor’s office insists they were consulted throughout the trial.

Her husband Howard Klein refused to answer questions outside the family home on Wednesday morning.

The verdict is a significant concession for prosecutors. Bonola stabbed Gaal more than 50 times while her teenage son was upstairs at her home in Forest Hills, Queens, and then dragged her body down the street in her son’s holdall.

It was a shocking and gruesome crime that terrified the neighborhood and led to a multi-day manhunt.

David Bonola is shown in court today and pleads guilty to manslaughter Orsolya Gaal Gaal’s body was found in her son’s hockey bag, dumped on the side of a freeway not far from their home in Queens

After his arrest, it turned out that the couple were having an affair. Gaal’s husband was out of town at the time of her murder and Bonola had gone to the house to try to rekindle their romance.

He attacked her in the basement, stabbed her 50 times, and then waited well into the night to drag her body out of the house and dump it near a freeway.

The couple flirted on social media in the months leading up to her death, having met when she hired him to do hands-on work around the family home.

The prosecutor’s office has yet to explain why the charges were downgraded from murder to manslaughter. A spokesman told DailyMail.com that Gaal’s family had been consulted about the plea and that they agreed to it.

“That was the agreement between the defender and the people. Victims were consulted along the way,” they said.

In a statement, DA Melinda Katz: “By pleading guilty, the defendant has accepted responsibility and will be held fully accountable for his criminal actions.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the victim and hope today’s request will enable them to begin healing.”

Gaal’s husband Howard did not respond to questions about the plea deal Wednesday morning. He has not discussed the murder, which Bonola presented in court on manslaughter charges Wednesday. He worked for Gaal’s family in their home. Bonola will be found guilty of manslaughter in court on Wednesday. He worked for Gaal’s family in their home. Gaal’s husband Howard Klein has yet to respond to the verdict. They are shown with their two sons, one of whom was at home when his mother was stabbed more than 50 times in April. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz was in court Wednesday to see Bonola plead guilty. Her office insists the victim’s family was consulted and that they agreed to the conviction that Gaal was murdered at her home after attending a Lincoln Center show with friends. She rode the train home, then stopped for a drink before walking back to her Juno Street home. There Bonola attacked. He dragged her body and dumped it on a park path, then fled and was arrested four days later

Aafter New York Police DepartmentA 44-year-old man was arrested Thursday in the death of a 51-year-old Orsolya Gaal, discovered in a holdall in Queens over the weekend.

NYPD detective chief James vinegarsays David Bonola is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree criminal manipulation and fourth-degree criminal firearms possession. He was due to be charged later in the day on Thursday.

Bonola confessed to police after his arrest, according to a police officer. At a news conference Thursday, Essig claimed Bonola made “incriminating statements.”

Essig said the investigation is ongoing and no suspects have been identified.

A deadly affair

Authorities believe Gaal and Bonola, a handyman employed by her family, had an intimate relationship, police said based on the preliminary investigation.

According to police, the relationship had been “on and off” for about two years and was “being mooted” when Gaal was killed early Saturday.

Gaal went to and returned to a show on Friday night forest mountains home around 12:20 a.m. Saturday, according to investigators, according to vinegar.

According to Essig, Bonola arrived at the house shortly after. He was either allowed in or he used a spare key.

An argument ensued, culminating in a violent confrontation in the home’s basement, during which Essig claimed that Bonola stabbed Gaal “recklessly and brutally.” 55 timesthey kill.

Afterwards, Bonola is accused of stuffing Gaal’s body in a hockey bag and “rolling the body down the sidewalks and leaving a bloody trail down the streets of Forest Hills,” according to the video.

A horrifying discovery

According to Essig, a member of the public discovered her body in a bag just before 8 a.m. Saturday.

The NYPD previously said a suspicious bloody bag had been reported nearby Metropolitan Avenue and Jackie Robinson Parkway. Officials discovered an unconscious and unresponsive woman in a duffel bag, and she was pronounced dead by rescue workers.

According to the NYPD, a trail of blood led to this 72-24 Juno Street, about half a mile northwest of where the bag was discovered. Gaal, who resided at Juno Street, has been identified as the woman.

According to the Office of the New York CoronerGaal’s cause of death was ruled a sharp laceration to the neck and her cause of death was manslaughter.

Lots of evidence against Bonola

Essig said Thursday that investigators found the jacket Bonola was wearing when Gaal was killed. At another location, they discovered boots, a T-shirt, and bloody bandages. According to Essig, Bonola was treated for wounds on both hands at a local hospital later on Saturday.

The knife believed to have been used in Gaal’s murder was also recovered by police. The knife matched other knives found in the apartment Deputy Chief Commanding Officer of Queens North Julie Morrill.

The handyman lover of a married Queens mom claimed he killed her because he thought she had given him HIV during their two year affair and tossed her laptop into the Hudson river because it had explicit videos.

David Bonola, 44, of Queens, was arraigned on Tuesday on a 13-count indictment for the April 16 murder of Orsolya Gaal, 51, who was stabbed 58 times in her basement and stuffing the body in a duffle bag while her son was upstairs .

According to the court documents, when detectives questions him on April 20, Bonoal allegedly claimed Gaal was cheating on him and that, ‘She gave me HIV,’ the New York Post reported.

‘She lied to me, she used me. She told me that she loved me. She couldn’t be with one person.

‘I took her laptop because she had sex videos on the laptop,’ he added. ‘I threw her laptop in the Hudson River where I used to visit her.’

Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise charged Bonola with two counts of murder in the second degree, two counts of burglary in the first degree, concealment of a human corpse, tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

If convicted, the handyman faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison.

If convicted, the handyman faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison

Prosecutors said Gaal had returned to her home in Forest Hills on April 16, at around 12:30 am, when Bonola went into the house just a few minutes later.

Bonola, who had worked as Gaal’s handyman for the last two years and had an affair with the mother of two, got into an argument with her and went on to slash her throat while they were in the basement, according to the charges.

NYPD officials said Bonola had gone over to the home in an attempt to resurrect the affair as the relationship had come to ‘the end’.

According to the statements from the April 20 interrogation, Bonola also confronted Gaal about the HIV claim.

‘I told her that I just wanted her to tell me the truth about why she gave me HIV,’ Bonola told police. ‘She said she didn’t have HIV.’

When Gaal told him the affair was over, he said she grabbed a knife and ordered him to leave, but Bonola told the police he refused.

‘I grabbed the knife and cut her from the neck,’ Bonola allegedly told the police. ‘She kept fighting and we fall. She was moving and trying to grab me so I stabbed her in the neck to get her to stop attacking me.’

Prosecutors said he went on to stab her 58 times before grabbing one of her son’s hockey duffle bags and stuffing her body inside. Gaal’s 13-year-old son, Leo, was asleep upstairs when the murder allegedly took place.

Her husband, Howard Klein, and oldest son, Jamie, were out of town looking at colleges.

Video outside the home shows Bonola rolling the bag through the quiet neighborhood before police discovered it near Forest Park at around 8 am

Prosecutors said police were able to trail the blood from the duffle bag to Gaal’s home, where the found the knife hidden in the house as well as Bonola’s jacket.

After he was arrested and questioned, Bonola allegedly admitted to police that he stabbed Gaal and moved her body, according to court records.

He also admitted to going to the hospital for a deep cuts he suffered on his hands.

In a statement following the indictment, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said: ‘This heinous murder left two teenagers without a mother and terrified an entire community.

‘As alleged, this defendant brutally stabbed the victim over 50 times before stuffing her body into a duffel bag – which he then dragged for several blocks in an attempt to dispose of the victim’s remains.

‘The defendant has now been indicted and arraigned on very serious charges and faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.’

Police found the murder weapon (above) hidden inside Gaal’s house along with Bonola’s jacket

The criminal complaint charging Bonola cites both surveillance video footage and his own ‘statements and admissions’ as evidence in the case against him.

Bonola, who hails from Mexico and had moved to the US more than 20 years ago, was arrested on Thursday.

Police sources who spoke with the New York Post say he spilled his guts in an entirely ‘matter of fact’ manner – and then proceeded to eat a bagel with cream cheese as if nothing had happened.

‘It was very matter of fact, very thorough, he answered every question they had,’ a police source told the newspaper. At no point did he request a lawyer.

Then, as he was put in a police car on Thursday in front of journalists asking why he killed her, he screamed: ‘F**k you motherf****r!’

Bonola and the victim first started seeing each other in 2020 after he worked in the family home where Gaal lived with her 53-year-old husband and two sons. It was an on-off relationship which they rekindled in April, but which had recently ended again.

According to NYPD sources, Bonola had gone over to the home in an attempt to resurrect the affair after it had come to ‘the end’.

‘A heated argument ensues between the two in the basement. A knife is brandished. A violent struggle ensues, resulting in our victim being stabbed ruthlessly and brutally in excess of 55 times, causing her demise,’ NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig explained.

He then retrieved her son’s hockey bag and waited until 4am, then wheeled her body out of the home and dumped it less than half a mile away. He also sent a text to Klein, Gaal’s husband, claiming to have been someone she once sent to jail in a failed attempt to throw police off his scent.

A local florist, Martin Calixto, said that Bonola would often stop by and buy a single red rose each and every time. He even recognized Gaal from photos that Bonola had showed him in the past.

‘He was very in love with her. He was talking about her as a very nice girl, very respectful. It’s hard to believe. He was a nice guy, dammit. For me it’s hard to believe,’ he went on.

Cops want to question a former handyman lover of slain Queens mom Orsolya Gaal who had intimate knowledge of her home — including where the family kept a spare key, The Post has learned.

The man, who has not yet been formally identified as a person of interest or suspect in the gruesome slaying, is believed to have had a romantic relationship with the 51-year-old married mother of two before the affair went south, law enforcement sources said.

It’s unclear when the relationship began and ended, but according to sources familiar with the case, the man knew where the family kept a spare key at their well-kept Forest Hills Tudor and would have been able to access the home without breaking in.

Gaal was stabbed nearly 60 times sometime in the week hours Saturday inside the front of the home, with her corpse then taken to the basement, sources and authorities have said. She was stashed in a black Bauer hockey bag similar to one belonging to her kids, and the pouch containing her body was dragged outside and dumped about a half-mile away, leaving behind a trail of blood, cops said.

Police believe the killer knew Gaal because there were no signs of a break-in, and considering the violent nature of the crime, they suspect the attack was personal and fueled by anger specifically toward her, sources said.

Police are looking to question a man who believe they had a past relationship with slain Queens mom Orsolya Gaal, according to sources.orsolya.gaal.9/Facebook

But the grisly slaying did not appear to be pre-meditated, sources said.

“[Detectives] don’t think it was a planned murder,” a law enforcement source said.

“He left a blood trail for five blocks from the house,” the source said.

“It was like a trail of bread crumbs.

“If you want to kill somebody, you try to make it a little cleaner, be a little more prepared. He didn’t go with something to move her body. He took something from the house,” the source said.

Gaal’s husband, Howard Klein, and older son were away touring colleges during the attack.orsolya.gaal.9/Facebook

“I’m sure with that kind of blood, there’s lots of DNA there,” the source added. “The killer’s DNA has gotta be in that blood. It’s not a clean scene.”

Cops are also looking to speak with several men Gaal had been texting with before her death, sources said, as detectives plastered posters around the neighborhood offering a $3,500 reward in exchange for tips.

“UP TO $3,500 REWARD FOR INFORMATION REGARDING A HOMICIDE,” the poster states in bold red letters beside a photo of Gaal’s home and the number for Crime Stoppers.

NYPD sources told The Post on Tuesday that detectives had asked the Queens District Attorney’s Office for a search warrant shortly after tracing the blood back to Gaal’s house Saturday morning.

But investigators weren’t given the warrant until early evening, costing them valuable time in gathering evidence, sources said.

The DA’s office did not immediately respond to a post request for comment.

On Tuesday afternoon, the family’s electrician, Arrjuna Jack, stopped by Gaal’s home, which is still wrapped in crime-scene tape, after he heard that she’d been killed on the news.

“I’m very started,” said Jack, 30, adding that he was frequently at the family’s home to do electrical work, as well as some power-washing and painting.

On Friday evening, Gaal headed out with friends to see a show at Lincoln Center before returning to Queens around midnight and hitting a bar in her neighborhood, where she hung out alone for about 40 minutes, apparently waiting for someone, police sources said.

Samson Cornejo, whose father owns 5 Burro Cafe on Austin Street, said Gaal was a regular at the watering hole but added he’s not sure if she was there late Friday.

“Her house is a 10-minute walk. … She comes here, y’know, she’s been here before. She used to come with some Russian ladies,” Cornejo told The Post on Tuesday.

“I saw the bag, where they found it, after I left that night. I drove by it after leaving here. I couldn’t believe when I heard. It smacked me when I saw her picture!”

Gaal’s 13-year-old son was home when cops went to the house Saturday morning after his mother’s body was discovered. The boy was upstairs at the time, and there is no indication he left the house at all overnight, sources said.

Gaal’s husband and 17-year-old son were out of state on a college tour at the time.

In May 2020, Gaal was briefly reported missing to police after her husband called 911 and said she’d gone for a walk around midnight and wasn’t home by the time he woke up the next morning.

About two months later, she posted an ominous message to a community Facebook page asking for information on how to buy pepper spray.

“Given the recent attack on a woman in Forest Park and the general uptick of crime and seedy characters in the neighborhood, I sought info here to get mace / pepper spray for my runs in the park,” the post states.

“Be safe out there!” she wrote.

Not long after Bob Mainardi opened The Magazine as a storefront selling glossy magazines for collecting on Larkin Street, two construction workers stopped by to see his always inventive window display.

“How do places like this stay in business?” Mainardi heard one say to the other. “Beats me,” said his companion.

Mainardi told this story for the next 50 years while standing behind the counter raving about the illustrators, art directors, photographers and writers who poured their talent into the magazines that were mailed and sold at the kiosks.

When there were no customers, Mainardi was lucky enough to just leaf through his warehouse and admire the illustrations in the vintage glossies of the first half of the century.

Opened in April 1973, the store was still operating on December 11, 2021 when Mainardi left the store and went home to take an afternoon nap.

Four hours later, longtime partner Trent Dunphy went to check on him. Mainardi died in his sleep with his typical suspenders, glasses with owl rims on the side table. His cat Kicius was lying at the foot of the bed. Mainardi was 75 years old and the cause of death was heart failure, Dunphy said.

As always, the magazine opened the following Tuesday, as Mainardi would have liked. Throughout its history, The Magazine has only been closed for three business days due to power outages caused by the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Mainardi never missed a work day, even after testing positive for HIV in 1986. He took the experimental drug AZT as soon as it hit the market in 1989. He was a longtime survivor who never developed symptoms of AIDS.

Robert Thomas Mainardi was born and raised in Patterson, NJ on February 2, 1946. His father, Marcus Mainardi, taught math in college and his mother was a housewife.

Mainardi came west to attend Whittier College, which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1968. A college buddy had been inducted into UC Hastings College of the Law, and “Bob came along because he thought it might be fun,” said Dunphy.

After renting an apartment on California and Polk Street, Mainardi got a job at the Bonanza Inn Bookshop across Market Street from the Palace Hotel. Mainardi was a book buyer who specialized in remaining stock – texts that no longer sold well – but his love was always magazines. He collected copies of the Saturday Evening Post for Norman Rockwell and JC Leyendecker’s illustrations dating back to the 1910s.

Mainardi’s own collection formed the magazine’s original inventory when he and Dunphy opened the store at 839 Larkin Street, conveniently located next to Gangay, one of Polk Gulch’s oldest gay bars.

At its peak around 1980, the magazine had over a hundred regulars, mostly collectors, looking for retrospective issues of Time and Life. People has been a constant seller starting with the premiere edition on February 4, 1974, with Mia Farrow on the cover of The Great Gatsby. The older issues of Holiday, Look and Colliers also sold well.

Those were the front books in the shop. At the back were skin magazines and erotica in trash cans, sorted according to fetish preferences.

“The funny thing about The Magazine is that it wasn’t like walking into a dirty bookstore because it was classy and looked so old-fashioned,” said Kevin Bentley, a former book editor at Harper Collins.

“Everything has been treated with appreciation for the preservation of all things on paper. You were never embarrassed, ”said Bentley.

Bentley can remember looking in the magazine for the latest issue of Playgirl or Blueboy while a straight collector next to him looked for a specific vintage issue of Playboy.

“Whether you asked for a magazine about surfers or a magazine about spanking, you always got a respectful reply from Bob,” said Bentley.

When the shop opened, either Mainardi or Dunphy were behind the counter. They met at a mutual friend’s Sunday brunch in 1969 and have been partners in life and business ever since.

“We both loved magazines,” said Dunphy. “We always believed that if it were legal we would sell it.”

They also believed in the power of window dressing. “That’s how Bob put himself,” said Dunphy. “His first memorable appearance was the day Nixon stepped down. He put every magazine we had with Nixon on the cover. There was no comment from us, just the cover. “

A stunned passer-by was photographed in front of the window. The picture made the morning chronicle.

In 1986 the magazine needed more space and a wider shop window front for Mainardi’s creative shop window displays. So it moved one block south to combine two storefronts at 731 Larkin. They had hardly moved in when a friend who worked in the real estate business gave Mainardi some important piece of advice.

“He said, ‘If you don’t buy a building, you’re going to be out of business in 10 years,'” said Dunphy. They bought 920-924 Larkin, an abandoned three-story building for $ 450,000. They mortgaged Dunphy’s home in the mission district, and Mainardi contributed an inheritance from his parents to pay cash.

The renovation of the shop window and the two apartments on the upper floor took four years. The last location was opened in 1993. Among those addressed was the illustrator R. Crumb, who designed an advertising poster for the shop. He took payment in copies of Time, which contained WWII propaganda drawings.

Mainardi never stopped collecting. There are roughly 5,000 postcards with New York pictures and boxes and boxes of magazine covers in the old Victorian style he and Dunphy owned on the mission. Mainardi spent his working day organizing and studying his magazines, then going home and organizing and studying.

“He spent hours looking through them,” said Dunphy. “He has always immersed himself in his collection, smoothed it out and organized himself.”

He was also a collector of body photography and illustrations, mostly of male bodybuilders. These were published in three books that he edited and introduced introductions.

Mainardi’s last window display, Christmas scenes with covers of the New Yorker and the Saturday Evening Post, was still there as New Year’s Eve approached.

“People still come by and poke their heads in and say, ‘I love these windows, let them come,” said Dunphy.

The fate of Mainardi’s personal collection has not yet been determined, but the store will live on, at least as long as Dunphy did. He is 84.

“The store was Bob’s life,” said Dunphy, noting that Mainardi never had a cell phone and that his store doesn’t have a computer. “He loved coming here every day and working on his windows or sealing magazine covers. It was something from another time. “

A memorial service is due. Survivors include his 50-year-old partner, Trent Dunphy of San Francisco; Brother Mark Mainardi of San Francisco; and cousins Jesse Mainardi from San Francisco and Paul Mainardi from Philadelphia.

Donations on his behalf can be made to the Tyler Clementi Foundation (which focuses on combating harassment and bullying of gay children). PO Box 345, Harrison, NJ 07029; and Larkin St. Youth Services, 134 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco CA 94102
