At the Great San Francisco Dickens Fair you can meet Santa Claus on the streets of Victorian London. You may meet Queen Victoria or her husband Prince Albert. You can also meet Charles Dickens – and listen to him read one of his famous stories. Maybe you'll see Oliver Twist being dragged off to prison. And that is just the beginning.

You'll find dozens of other characters dressed in period costumes and playing roles large and small – from the gentlemen and ladies to a humble chimney sweep. They are all looking forward to talking to you and posing for photos. But your 19th century brain may be wondering what device you're using to take these photos.

What is the Dickens Fair?

Six weeks before Christmas, the 120,000-square-foot San Francisco Cow Palace is transformed into a bustling 19th-century London street scene.

It's an elaborate party, to say the least, with hundreds of costumed players. You will also find seven stages where singers and dancers provide entertainment.

If all this tires you out, you can enjoy a beer or other liquid refreshments in four traditional English pubs or the Bohemian Absinthe Bar. Or caffeinate instead and enjoy a cup of hot tea and cucumber sandwiches at Cuthbert's Tea House (reservations required). The food stalls offer British-style classics such as bangers and mash, meat pies and roasted chestnuts.

Reasons to go to Dickens Fair

The Dickens Fair is so captivating that it takes you away from everyday life for a few hours. Don't be surprised if you leave refreshed and relaxed, as if you had taken a trip somewhere else.

Charles Dickens' London may not have been quite like Dickens Fair, but it's still fun to spend some time reflecting on a bygone era. And the players are there to help you do it.

The stores have well-made goods, making the fair a good place for a little holiday shopping – if the people on your list would like what you find. The food is delicious and quite affordable compared to similar events.

Reasons to skip Dickens Fair

If you don't like Merry Old England, you might not like Dickens Fair either. It's also not the best place if you don't like crowds.

Most adults seem to enjoy it. Younger children with short attention spans may get bored, but others will fully engage with the action.

Dickens Fair Basics

The Dickens Fair takes place six weekends before Christmas. For details of dates and opening times, please visit the Dickens Fair website. Entry is subject to a fee. Parking is extra and payable on site.

You'll probably spend a few hours walking around, browsing, and grabbing a bite to eat. If you sit down to watch all the shows, stop at all the shops and eat a good meal, you could easily be there for three hours or more.

Reservations are not required. You can purchase your tickets online and download them to your mobile device or collect them from the ticket office when you arrive. Discounted Twilight tickets for entry after 3 p.m. are so cheap that even Scrooge couldn't complain. They are only available at the box office.

Cuthbert's Tea Shoppe serves a fun afternoon tea, but reservations are essential. Check out their website for menus and reservations, which they start accepting in September. It is also recommended to reserve a meal at Tippling Toad, which can be made at the counter or by email at thetipplingtoad@gmail.com.

Tips for Enjoying Dickens Fair

The event can draw large crowds, but on a Sunday morning in early December it can be just right, with enough people to make it feel festive and fun, but not so crowded that it's difficult to get around.

• Bring cash or go hungry. Grocery vendors don't accept credit cards, but most retail stores do.
• If you arrive by car you will have to pay a fee for parking. From the car park it is just a short walk to the exhibition halls, which are located next to the main Cow Palace building. If you don't want to make the walk, you can take a shuttle that will take you to the front door.
• If you arrive before the show starts, you may be able to find street parking and avoid these costs.
• You can leave and re-enter the fair if you receive a hand stamp upon exit.
• Some participants wear costumes, but these are not required. Organizers ask that you do not come dressed as characters from Dickens novels. For more costume information visit the Dickens Fair website.
• Leave the pets at home. You're not allowed in.
• The fair is accessible to people with limited mobility and wheelchairs are available for half-day rentals if you need one.

Directions to all major highways can be found on the Dickens Fair website. They also have directions to public transportation. The fair offers free shuttle service from the Glen Park BART station. The address of the Cow Palace is 2600 Geneva Avenue.

The Story Of An Eyewitness by Jack London, Collier’s special Correspondent

Upon receipt of the first news of the earthquake, Collier’s telegraphed  Mr. Jack London – who lived only forty miles from San Francisco – requesting him to go to the scene of the disaster and write the story of what he saw. Mr. London started at once, and he sent the following dramatic description of the tragic events he witnessed in the burning city.

The earthquake shook down in San Francisco hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of walls and chimneys. But the conflagration that followed burned up hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of property There is no estimating within hundreds of millions the actual damage wrought. Not in history has a modern imperial city been so completely destroyed. San Francisco is gone. Nothing remains of it but memories and a fringe of dwelling-houses on its outskirts. Its industrial section is wiped out. Its business section is wiped out. Its social and residential section is wiped out. The factories and warehouses, the great stores and newspaper buildings, the hotels and the palaces of the nabobs, are all gone. Remains only the fringe of dwelling houses on the outskirts of what was once San Francisco.

Within an hour after the earthquake shock the smoke of San Francisco’s burning was a lurid tower visible a hundred miles away. And for three days and nights this lurid tower swayed in the sky, reddening the sun, darkening the day, and filling the land with smoke.

On Wednesday morning at a quarter past five came the earthquake. A minute later the flames were leaping upward In a dozen different quarters south of Market Street, in the working-class ghetto, and in the factories, fires started. There was no opposing the flames. There was no organization, no communication. All the cunning adjustments of a twentieth century city had been smashed by the earthquake. The streets were humped into ridges and depressions, and piled with the debris of fallen walls. The steel rails were twisted into perpendicular and horizontal angles. The telephone and telegraph systems were disrupted. And the great water-mains had burst. All the shrewd contrivances and safeguards of man had been thrown out of gear by thirty seconds’ twitching of the earth-crust.
 

The Fire Made its Own Draft

By Wednesday afternoon, inside of twelve hours, half the heart of the city was gone. At that time I watched the vast conflagration from out on the bay. It was dead calm. Not a flicker of wind stirred. Yet from every side wind was pouring in upon the city. East, west, north, and south, strong winds were blowing upon the doomed city. The heated air rising made an enormous suck. Thus did the fire of itself build its own colossal chimney through the atmosphere. Day and night this dead calm continued, and yet, near to the flames, the wind was often half a gale, so mighty was the force.

Wednesday night saw the destruction of the very heart of the city. Dynamite was lavishly used, and many of San Francisco proudest structures were crumbled by man himself into ruins, but there was no withstanding the onrush of the flames. Time and again successful stands were made by the fire-fighters, and every time the flames flanked around on either side or came up from the rear, and turned to defeat the hard-won victory.

An enumeration of the buildings destroyed would be a directory of San Francisco. An enumeration of the buildings undestroyed would be a line and several addresses. An enumeration of the deeds of heroism would stock a library and bankrupt the Carnegie medal fund. An enumeration of the dead-will never be made. All vestiges of them were destroyed by the flames. The number of the victims of the earthquake will never be known. South of Market Street, where the loss of life was particularly heavy, was the first to catch fire.

Remarkable as it may seem, Wednesday night while the whole city crashed and roared into ruin, was a quiet night. There were no crowds. There was no shouting and yelling. There was no hysteria, no disorder. I passed Wednesday night in the path of the advancing flames, and in all those terrible hours I saw not one woman who wept, not one man who was excited, not one person who was in the slightest degree panic stricken.

Before the flames, throughout the night, fled tens of thousands of homeless ones. Some were wrapped in blankets. Others carried bundles of bedding and dear household treasures. Sometimes a whole family was harnessed to a carriage or delivery wagon that was weighted down with their possessions. Baby buggies, toy wagons, and go-carts were used as trucks, while every other person was dragging a trunk. Yet everybody was gracious. The most perfect courtesy obtained. Never in all San Francisco’s history, were her people so kind and courteous as on this night of terror.

A Caravan of Trunks

All night these tens of thousands fled before the flames. Many of them, the poor people from the labor ghetto, had fled all day as well. They had left their homes burdened with possessions. Now and again they lightened up, flinging out upon the street clothing and treasures they had dragged for miles.

They held on longest to their trunks, and over these trunks many a strong man broke his heart that night. The hills of San Francisco are steep, and up these hills, mile after mile, were the trunks dragged. Everywhere were trunks with across them lying their exhausted owners, men and women. Before the march of the flames were flung picket lines of soldiers. And a block at a time, as the flames advanced, these pickets retreated. One of their tasks was to keep the trunk-pullers moving. The exhausted creatures, stirred on by the menace of bayonets, would arise and struggle up the steep pavements, pausing from weakness every five or ten feet.

Often, after surmounting a heart-breaking hill. they would find another wall of flame advancing upon them at right angles and be compelled to change anew the line of their retreat. In the end, completely played out, after toiling for a dozen hours like giants, thousands of them were compelled to abandon their trunks. Here the shopkeepers and soft members of the middle class were at a disadvantage. But the working-men dug holes in vacant lots and backyards and buried their trunks.

The Doomed City

At nine o’clock Wednesday evening I walked down through the very heart of the city. I walked through miles and miles of magnificent buildings and towering skyscrapers. Here was no fire. All was in perfect order. The police patrolled the streets. Every building had its watchman at the door. And yet it was doomed, all of it. There was no water. The dynamite was giving out. And at right angles two different conflagrations were sweeping down upon it.

At one o’clock in the morning I walked down through the same section.  Everything still stood intact. There was no fire. And yet there was a change. A rain of ashes was falling. The watchmen at the doors were gone. The police had been withdrawn. There were no firemen, no fire-engines, no men fighting with dynamite. The district had been absolutely abandoned. I stood at the corner of Kearney and Market, in the very innermost heart of San Francisco.
 

Kearny Street was deserted. Half a dozen blocks away it was burning on both sides. The street was a wall of flame. And against this wall of flame, silhouetted sharply, were two United States cavalrymen sitting their horses, calming watching. That was all. Not another person was in sight. In the intact heart of the city two troopers sat their horses and watched.

Spread of the Conflagration

Surrender was complete. There was no water. The sewers had long since been pumped dry. There was no dynamite. Another fire had broken out further uptown, and now from three sides conflagrations were sweeping down. The fourth side had been burned earlier in the day. In that direction stood the tottering walls of the Examiner building, the burned-out Call building, the smoldering ruins of the Grand Hotel, and the gutted, devastated, dynamited Palace Hotel

The following will illustrate the sweep of the flames and the inability of men to calculate their spread. At eight o’clock Wednesday evening I passed through Union Square. It was packed with refugees. Thousands of them had gone to bed on the grass. Government tents had been set up, supper was being cooked, and the refugees were lining up for free meals

At half past one in the morning three sides of Union Square were in flames. The fourth side, where stood the great St. Francis Hotel was still holding out. An hour later, ignited from top and sides the St. Francis was flaming heavenward. Union Square, heaped high with mountains of trunks, was deserted. Troops, refugees, and all had retreated.

A Fortune for a Horse!

It was at Union Square that I saw a man offering a thousand dollars for a team of horses. He was in charge of a truck piled high with trunks from some hotel. It had been hauled here into what was considered safety, and the horses had been taken out. The flames were on three sides of the Square and there were no horses.

Also, at this time, standing beside the truck, I urged a man to seek safety in flight. He was all but hemmed in by several conflagrations. He was an old man and he Was on crutches. Said he: “Today is my birthday. Last night I was worth thirty thousand dollars. I bought five bottles of wine, some delicate fish and other things for my birthday dinner. I have had no dinner, and all I own are these crutches.”

I convinced him of his danger and started him limping on his way. An hour later, from a distance, I saw the truck-load of trunks burning merrily in the middle of the street.

On Thursday morning at a quarter past five, just twenty-four hours after the earthquake, I sat on the steps of a small residence on Nob Hill. With me sat Japanese, Italians, Chinese, and negroes–a bit of the cosmopolitan flotsam of the wreck of the city. All about were the palaces of the nabob pioneers of Forty-nine. To the east and south at right angles, were advancing two mighty walls of flame

I went inside with the owner of the house on the steps of which I sat. He was cool and cheerful and hospitable. “Yesterday morning,” he said, “I was worth six hundred thousand dollars. This morning this house is all I have left. It will go in fifteen minutes. He pointed to a large cabinet. “That is my wife’s collection of china. This rug upon which we stand is a present. It cost fifteen hundred dollars. Try that piano. Listen to its tone. There are few like it. There are no horses. The flames will be here in fifteen minutes.”

Outside the old Mark Hopkins residence a palace was just catching fire. The troops were falling back and driving the refugees before them. From every side came the roaring of flames, the crashing of walls, and the detonations of dynamite

The Dawn of the Second Day

I passed out of the house. Day was trying to dawn through the smoke-pall. A sickly light was creeping over the face of things. Once only the sun broke through the smoke-pall, blood-red, and showing quarter its usual size. The smoke-pall itself, viewed from beneath, was a rose color that pulsed and fluttered with lavender shades Then it turned to mauve and yellow and dun. There was no sun. And so dawned the second day on stricken San Francisco.

An hour later I was creeping past the shattered dome of the City Hall. Than it there was no better exhibit of the destructive force of the earthquake. Most of the stone had been shaken from the great dome, leaving standing the naked framework of steel. Market Street was piled high with the wreckage, and across the wreckage lay the overthrown pillars of the City Hall shattered into short crosswise sections.

This section of the city with the exception of the Mint and the Post-Office, was already a waste of smoking ruins. Here and there through the smoke, creeping warily under the shadows of tottering walls, emerged occasional men and women. It was like the meeting of the handful of survivors after the day of the end of the world.

Beeves Slaughtered and Roasted

On Mission Street lay a dozen steers, in a neat row stretching across the street just as they had been struck down by the flying ruins of the earthquake. The fire had passed through afterward and roasted them. The human dead had been carried away before the fire came. At another place on Mission Street I saw a milk wagon. A steel telegraph pole had smashed down sheer through the driver’s seat and crushed the front wheels. The milk cans lay scattered around.

All day Thursday and all Thursday night, all day Friday and Friday night, the flames still raged on.

Friday night saw the flames finally conquered. through not until Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill had been swept and three-quarters of a mile of wharves and docks had been licked up.

The Last Stand

The great stand of the fire-fighters was made Thursday night on Van Ness Avenue. Had they failed here, the comparatively few remaining houses of the city would have been swept. Here were the magnificent residences of the second generation of San Francisco nabobs, and these, in a solid zone, were dynamited down across the path of the fire. Here and there the flames leaped the zone, but these fires were beaten out, principally by the use of wet blankets and rugs.

San Francisco, at the present time, is like the crater of a volcano, around which are camped tens of thousands of refugees At the Presidio alone are at least twenty thousand. All the surrounding cities and towns are jammed with the homeless ones, where they are being cared for by the relief committees. The refugees were carried free by the railroads to any point they wished to go, and it is estimated that over one hundred thousand people have left the peninsula on which San Francisco stood.

The Government has the situation in hand, and, thanks to the immediate relief given by the whole United States, there is not the slightest possibility of a famine. The bankers and business men hare already set about making preparations to rebuild San Francisco.

EXCLUSIVE: The cultural phenomenon that is Netflix’s hit drama Bridgerton will impact London Palladium pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk with the casting of Louis Gaunt — he played dashing Lord Lumley in Season 2 of the frothy Regency-era drama — who will take on the title role of the farm lad who trades in the beloved family cow for magic beans.

Lord Lumley was one of the young blades in Bridgerton who made the acquaintance of Charithra Chandran’s Edwina Sharma, while also being at the beck and call of Jonathan Bailey’s Lord Anthony Bridgerton. In one scene Lord Bridgerton spots Lord Lumley escorting Edwina to the races. He quickly gets rid of him by ordering him to fetch lemonade.

‘Bridgerton’ Reveals Season 3 Opening, Premiere Episode Title

Jack and the Beanstalk also stars Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley), Julian Clary, Paul Zerdin, Nigel Havers and Gary Wilmot. Natalie McQueen and Rob Madge, an actor and social media superstar, also have joined the cast.

McQueen will play the panto’s Princess, while non binary Madge, well known for they comic timing, will play the cow, Pat.

Michael Harrison, the top executive at Crossroads Pantomimes, told Deadline that Clary, the panto’s main writer and principal dame, will add a flavor of Bridgerton to the script. “You can be sure that Julian will throw in a few references to Bridgerton,” he said. “There’s much to make merry of. One minute Louis Gaunt’s in Bridgerton, the next he’s climbing up a beanstalk. The jokes won’t rest there because Julian has 12 costume changes in lavish gowns.

”He’ll be sweeping on stage like Queen Charlotte,” said Harrison, referencing the mischievous monarch played by Golda Rosheuvel in the Netflix show. The actress also will star in Bridgerton spinoff Queen Charlotte.

Gaunt ended a run as Bert the chimney sweep in stage musical Mary Poppins at London’s Prince Edward Theatre last weekend. He made his West End stage debut as a dancer in the Dick Whittington panto at the Palladium in 2017.

The Palladium pantomime, a lush extravaganza, has become a seasonal tradition in recent years. Harrison has spoken to Broadway theater owners about the possibility of introducing pantomime to American audiences. “It’ll happen one day,” said Harrison. “Though we’d need to tailor it to American tastes, oh yes we will,” he added gleefully.

Jack and the Beanstalk will begin rehearsals in November with a first performance on December 10. The season will last for five weeks.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed is facing several early challengers ahead of next year’s mayoral election, all of which are critical of her performance as the city faces a drug overdose epidemic, a growing homeless population, and high crime rates.

The latest threat to her 2024 reelection campaign is Daniel Lurie, an heir to the Levi Strauss clothing fortune. The 46-year-old philanthropist announced his challenge to the Democratic incumbent this week. San Francisco Supervisor Ahsha Safaí filed paperwork in May for the city’s top political job and is considered another prominent challenger.

GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN: WHAT WILL BE OPEN AND WHAT WILL BE CLOSED

While Breed, Lurie, and Safaí are running in the same party, the candidates come from contrasting backgrounds.

Lurie, 46, is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit group Tipping Point Community. He signed paperwork launching his bid to unseat Breed on Tuesday at a rally at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House.

Speaking to a crowd of reporters, Lurie blasted Breed for failing to solve the city’s threats, such as the fentanyl crisis, staffing shortages in the police department, homelessness, and crime, all problems voters believe are the city’s most pressing challenges.

“This is not a crisis of resources. This is a crisis of leadership,” Lurie said. “We don’t have a mayor who’s challenging the system. We have a mayor who’s entrenched in it.”

“She’s been on the Board of Supervisors or in the City Hall for over a decade. What do we get? No solutions. We get excuses and finger-pointing,” Lurie added.

Under a Lurie administration, he said he’d focus on ending “open-air drug markets” and “the perception that lawlessness” is an acceptable part of the city.

San Francisco is on track to have the highest number of accidental overdose deaths in city history this year, driven by the synthetic opioid fentanyl that is being seized at record levels in the city’s open-air drug markets.

Breed called in Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), a former mayor of San Francisco, to assist with the crisis, calling in the National Guard and partnering with California Highway Patrol to tackle increased drug use. During the first two quarters of 2023, the San Francisco Police Department collected enough fentanyl to result in 30 million lethal doses.

“We have too many people that have been in power for far too long doing things the same way they’ve always been done,” Lurie said in a campaign video. “We have tremendous resources. We have everything at our disposal, and yet our streets are unsafe. We need to end the era of open-air drug dealing.”

Part of Lurie’s plan to curb crime and decrease 911 response times in the city is to boost staffing in the police department. The plan is in response to concern about a dire shortage of police officers.

“With proper staffing levels at SFPD, we will put officers in commercial corridors to deter smash and grab crimes and perform foot patrols in Chinatown so our seniors no longer fear being assaulted as they walk through Portsmouth square,” Lurie’s campaign states.

As of July, San Francisco is about 600 officers short of its recommended staffing levels, which propose 2,182 officers, according to a city-commissioned staffing analysis. However, the latest class of recruits is the largest and most diverse the city has seen in three years, according to Breed’s office. Police department applicants also hit a five-year high.

Lurie pledged to provide enough homeless shelter beds for all San Franciscans who seek one as the city copes with an overflow of homeless encampments.

The city has been embroiled in a lawsuit for more than a year after the Coalition on Homelessness sued the city for clearing homeless encampments. In the September 2022 suit, the organization alleged the city was in violation of state and federal laws that ruled a firm offer of shelter must be issued before citing and arresting people living on the streets. In December, Magistrate Judge Donna Ryu issued an injunction barring the city from clearing encampments in San Francisco. The city has been trying to tackle what “involuntary” homelessness means in court.

On Monday, the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals clarified that Ryu’s preliminary injunction does not apply to residents who refuse shelter or have a bed but choose to stay on the street. “Individuals are not involuntarily homeless if they have declined a specific offer of available shelter or otherwise have access to such shelter,” Breed said in a statement.

The second-term District 11 supervisor, Safaí, 50, filed paperwork in May to challenge Breed in the 2024 election. Safaí started his political career when he won election to the board of supervisors in 2016 against his progressive opponent, Kim Alvarenga, by less than 4 points. Although municipal elections in California are nonpartisan, Safaí was widely viewed as centrist. Safaí sits on the board’s Budget and Appropriations Committee.

Running on responding to the city’s drug crisis, addressing a rise in crime, and improving homeless services, Safaí has been critical of Breed’s performance in those areas, similar to the newest challenger.

Safaí was once a Breed ally, and he has urged unity with the mayor’s office and the board of supervisors.

“I have known London Breed for 23 years. I don’t see this as an affront to her,” Safaí told Mission Local in July when asked about his relationship with Breed.

He blasted Breed for opposing Proposition H, which moved mayoral and other city elections to align with the U.S. presidential election, moving the mayor’s race to 2024 when it passed last November. Supporters of Prop H believe the measure would increase voter turnout.

“If you want to have maybe around 50% of the people elect the most important position in this city, that’s your opinion,” Safaí said. “But I would rather have 75, 76, 77%, the highest voter turnout, determine the outcome of the most important race. And [Breed] was staunchly against that.”

Safaí said to tackle the drug epidemic plaguing San Francisco, he would focus more on the creation of sober living environments, helping people with substance abuse disorders get access to recovery services, according to an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle in May.

The city has spent millions of dollars to end the drug crisis in recent years, but San Francisco has long had a severe shortage of treatment beds. Breed has ramped up efforts in providing treatment options to those struggling with an addiction, making some controversial moves. Starting on July 3, officials launched a disputed new tactic — requiring those who are arrested for drug use or possession for a second time to attend a specialized court offering treatment services.

“I saw the amount of money we spent on homeless services and drug addiction, and things were getting worse, not better,” Safaí said.

Breed launched another initiative last week, ordering people who apply for county adult assistance programs to be screened for substance use disorders, and if they are found to be drug users, they must enter treatment before they can get San Francisco County cash assistance.

The proposal requires approval by the board of supervisors, and President Aaron Peskin, who has been floated as a possible mayoral contender, brushed off Breed’s idea.

“We fund a wide range of services, and we want to help people get the care they need, but under current state law, local government lack tools to compel people into treatment,” Breed said in a statement on Tuesday. “This initiative aims to create more accountability and help get people to accept the treatment and services they need.”

Touching on the police staffing shortage, Safaí plans to fill jobs that are going vacant, including 911 call operators and police officers.

Drugs in Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods are flooding in at an alarming rate, with about 154 pounds of fentanyl seized as of July, according to the city’s Tenderloin Police Station.

Safaí sponsored Proposition C, a 2022 November ballot measure that created the Homelessness Oversight Commission, composed of seven commissioners. Despite Breed’s opposition to the measure last year, it passed, and the city set the new oversight commission this year.

Other widely mentioned mayoral contenders include Democratic Assemblyman Phil Ting and San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu — both have expressed their disinterest in entering the race. Peskin, supervisor of North Beach and Chinatown, said he has no intention of running.

A woman who moved from London to San Francisco has revealed the things that she misses about living overseas. 

Tory Trombley, who is originally from the US, moved back to the States last year, after spending three years living in London – and she has now candidly revealed that she misses feeling ‘most herself’ in the UK.

The content creator – who works in the tech industry – opened up about the things she enjoyed the most about her time in London, and wishes she still had now that she is living in California. 

In one clip shared to her TikTok account, Tory laid bare the stark differences between the two cities, while revealing the steps she is trying to take in order to embrace her new home.

At the beginning of the clip, she explained that you have to keep in mind that she moved from one city to another. 

‘So the answer to the former question, do I miss living in the UK over the US is absolutely,’ she said. 

Tory noted that this was because many things ‘are more difficult in the US.’ 

‘One example is healthcare. It’s just so much harder to get good healthcare here and not pay a lot out of pocket for it. 

‘Another one is cultural. People talk about work way more and take way less vacation,’ she said of the US. 

Tory noted that she ‘misses’ the people she worked with in London and how ‘supportive’ they were of her taking time off. 

She noted that she enjoyed how ‘vibrant’ London was, adding that San Francisco is a lot smaller. 

However, she said that she has made California her home and has found parts of it to love.

In another video, Tory opened up about the truth about her life in San Francisco, hitting back at the increasingly grimy view that many people have of the city – particularly in the wake of rising crime rates. 

She insisted that not every area of the city is overrun with homelessness and crime, noting that many people who live in the city reside in neighborhoods that are much safer and more picturesque. 

‘If you go there, it’s such a different picture,’ she said. ‘San Francisco is one of the most visually stunning cities I’ve ever lived in in my life, and I’ve lived in London and I’ve lived in New York City.’ 

She went on to highlight the city’s ‘unparalleled’ access to nature, as well as its great weather. 

As for the job differences, Tory said there are several stark contrasts between corporate life in the UK and the US, explaining that differences exist in every aspect of her job, from vacation time to office culture. 

Despite the fact that she still works at the same company she was employed by in the UK, she said that things are very different now that she’s back in the US. 

‘So the first thing I noticed is an obvious one, but it’s true… vacation,’ she said in another video. ‘On the whole people get a lot less vacation here than they do in the UK and Europe. 

‘What this means is that people just don’t have as much free time to come on friends’ trips or to go on weekends away or time with their family or partner.’ 

Tory went on to note that the concept of ‘work/life balance’ is also viewed very differently between the countries, particularly when it comes to their vacation time. 

‘For example when I worked in Europe, someone would go on vacation and they would not be available at all,’ she explained. 

‘Whereas here in the US, it’s very common for people to leave their personal cellphone numbers in case you need them, or to take their laptop on vacation.’

SAN FRANCISCO – Residents of the city and county of San Francisco with addiction problems who receive cash assistance would be required to undergo treatment to continue receiving payments under a new proposal from Mayor London Breed. 

The proposal, which requires approval by the Board of Supervisors, would require people who apply for County Adult Assistance Programs to undergo screening for substance use disorder and to participate in a treatment program if they’re found to have an addiction, according to a statement Breed sent out Tuesday. 

“We fund a wide range of services, and we want to help people get the care they need but under current state law, local government lack tools to compel people into treatment,” Breed said. “This initiative aims to create more accountability and help get people to accept the treatment and services they need.”   

People who refuse or who “do not successfully engage in treatment” would not be eligible for cash assistance.

Who would this apply to? Specifically, homeless and formerly homeless, single adults, between the ages of 18 and 65, receiving anywhere from $700 to about $800 in cash assistance through San Francisco’s General Assistance program. 

And we’re just talking about the cash payments, not any housing assistance. G.A. is a program that exists in every county in California, and it can legally be tied to drug treatment.

That is what the mayor has proposed.

“Last week alone, 80 people were contacted and touched out on the street, asked if they wanted services, provided treatment on demand,” Breed said Tuesday. “And only one agreed.”

Breed said it is about moving people towards treatment and saving lives, two things San Francisco has struggled with. She also referenced conditions on city streets.

“But no more anything goes without accountability,” the mayor said.

Supervisors Catherine Stefani, Raphael Mandelman and Matt Dorsey all voiced support for the proposal, according to Breed’s announcement. 

Keith Humphreys, an addiction researcher at Stanford University, has been tentatively supportive of some of San Francisco’s efforts to push those in serious trouble towards treatment. But he has questions about this strategy.

“Right now, the city is not able to provide addiction treatment to people who are committing crimes that threaten public safety,” Humphreys told KPIX.

“I guess what I would say is, if I am the mayor, I would prioritize the place where the harm to the public is the greatest and the actual case for intervention is the highest,” Humphreys argued. “Which are people who break the law.”

Board of Supervisors president Aaron Peskin, however, released a statement Tuesday saying Breed should focus on stopping dealers and open-air drug markets rather than “drug testing people on welfare.”

“If she can’t find the way to prevent several hundred brazen criminals from selling deadly drugs — how does she think she will find the resources to drug test thousands of welfare recipients?” Peskin said in a news release.

“That’s where the public comes in,” Breed said of the debate. “Putting political pressure on their board of supervisor members to support this. It is definitely gonna be a fight, it won’t be easy. But ultimately, my hope is that the board sees this for what it is, this is a part of the solution to help us get to a better place with a number of people who are dying from drug overdoses in our city.”    

The move comes as California Gov. Gavin Newsom begins the rollout of his controversial new CARE court plan this fall that is projected to cost billions. 

It’s called CARE court because it brings mental health care into the courtroom. Now judges will order people to get help and counties to provide it under a new law that emphasizes accountability and consequences.

A person referred to CARE Court for a severe mental illness will be evaluated. If they have an untreated psychotic disorder, like schizophrenia, a judge can order a mental health treatment plan including medication, therapy and a place to live. 

The governor believes the new civil court system will help thousands get off the streets – and make everyone safer by helping people before they become a danger to themselves or others. 

“Change has its enemies. I get it,” Newsom said during a recent “60 Minutes” interview. “But one thing you cannot argue for, with all due respect to all the critics out there, is the status quo. You can’t. And in the absence of alternatives, What the hell are we gonna do to address this crisis?

Hertfordshire studio Michael Collins Architects has added a boxy, two-storey copper and charred larch extension to a terraced house alongside a railway station in south London.

The extension and renovation was named Jewellery Box, as a nod to the way the Victorian terrace and subdued extension hide the home’s more vibrant interiors.

“Our clients talked about the house having a jewellery box quality, where a simple form is pulled apart to reveal a more complex, light and textured interior,” explained Michael Collins Architects founder Michael Collins.

“The extension to the rear is conceived as two cubic volumes that slide across a plinth, with areas of glazing set between,” he told Dezeen.

The studio extended the home to the rear with a pair of blocky additions that were informed by the various ad hoc extensions added to terraced houses in London that can often be seen when travelling by train in the city

On the ground floor, an oxidised-copper extension contains a kitchen and dining space, while a smaller charred larch-clad extension above houses a first-floor bathroom. This is topped with a roof deck that is accessed from the second floor.

“The block-like exterior was inspired by the simple poetry of stacked boxy self-built ‘add-ons’ and ‘closet returns’ seen along the rear of railway terraces that reflect the varied lives of their inhabitants, we weren’t keen on trying to create a highly ordered composition,” said Collins.

“A key issue was how to create a sense of spatial generosity on this constrained site, and how to address the steep natural embankment at the rear.”

The studio clad the outside of the home in dark industrial materials to reference the nature of the site alongside the railway tracks, and the home’s former owner who was a chimney sweep.

“The use of oxidised copper and charred larch were informed by the context,” said Collins. “Specifically the urban memory of a famous south London chimney sweep that lived and ran his business from the property, but also the sooty quality of the brickwork along the railway embankment, and the oxidised metal infrastructure found along the line.”

The interiors contrast the dark exterior

In contrast to the subdued exterior the interior spaces were decorated with bright colours, with Inchyra Blue cabinets and surfaces combined with gold backsplashes in the kitchen.

“An aquatic datum of flush panels conceal utility areas, larders, and a toilet wrapping around the internal walls of the kitchen to create a sense of immersion and continuity with the trained plants around the garden walls,” added Collins.

The studio also renovated the main house

Overall the architect believes that the home is fitting to its location and would not make sense anywhere else.

“We hoped the project would be as idiosyncratic as its surroundings,” he said.

“The project grew from the site and two very unique clients. These factors informed its orientation, massing and materiality and we like to think that it would not make sense on a different site.”

Jewellery Box was longlisted in the small interior category of Dezeen Awards 2020. This category was won by Sim-Plex Design Studio’s four-bedroom smart home in Hong Kong.

NEW YORK (AP) – Ron Marinaccio schied im neunten Inning aufgrund eines Game-Ending-Popups gegen Marcus Semien aus, Clay Holmes ließ im achten Inning zwei Läufer liegen und New York besiegte Texas, nachdem Aaron Judge sagte, dass er nicht kurz davor sei, von einem Run zurückzukehren verletzter rechter Zeh.

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) – Jordan Lyles beendete eine Siegesserie von 15 Spielen und Kansas City besiegte Tampa Bay zum zweiten Sieg in drei Tagen gegen das Team mit der besten Bilanz bei den Majors.

Lyles (1-11) ließ über sechs Innings vier Runs und acht Hits zu. Es war sein erster Sieg seit seinem letzten Start im letzten Jahr am 30. September, als er für die Baltimore Orioles spielte.

Drew Waters, Freddy Fermín und Edward Olivares trafen für die Royals, die mit 22-55 die zweitschlechteste Bilanz bei den Majors haben.
