LIVEMORE — A woman was stranded on top of her car in a swift-moving Livermore creek for about 15 hours before being rescued Tuesday morning, the Alameda County Fire Department said.

Just after 10 a.m. Tuesday, a camper near the 7000 block of Del Valle Road called the Alameda County Fire Department about a car submerged in the water.

Fire crews at the scene spotted a woman sitting on top of the car and began planning a rescue, while calling the CHP for help. Thanks to appropriate weather, a CHP helicopter was able to lower a rescue technician and get the woman out of the creek.

“It could have had a whole different outcome. She could have been swept downstream, but she was strong enough to get up on top of the vehicle,” said Battalion Chief Kent Carlin, with Alameda Fire. “Maybe out of her tenacity or luck. I don’t know what it was. The entire cab was submerged, so she was able to swim out of the window and climb herself up on the vehicle.”

Video posted on the CHP Golden Gate Division Air Operations account showed the dramatic rescue.

**Water Rescue–Lake Del Valle**

This morning, CHP H-30 responded with Alameda County Fire, Pleasanton-Livermore Fire, East Bay Regional Parks, San Ramon Fire Department Helicopter Rescue Technician (HRT) and Falck Ambulance to a report of an overturned vehicle at Lake Del Valle. It was further reported that the occupant was sitting on top of the vehicle in the middle of a flowing creek.

As firefighters set up for a rescue with rescue swimmers, H-30 arrived overhead and lowered a San Ramon Valley Fire Department Helicopter Rescue Technician (HRT) to the vehicle. The San Ramon Valley Fire HRT placed the victim in a rescue harness for rescue. H-30 was able to hoist the HRT member and victim from the car to waiting firefighters.

The victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. It appears the victim attempted to drive across a creek that was moving fairly swiftly due to recent rains causing her vehicle to overturn in the creek.

Posted by CHP – Golden Gate Division Air Operations on Tuesday, January 23, 2024

According to Alameda Fire, the woman tried to drive through the creek around 7:30 p.m. Monday, but she underestimated how deep it was and was running faster than expected causing her car to overturn.

She was stranded for about 15 hours. Rescue crews said she would be OK, but she was still taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

Kelsi Thorud contributed to this report.

Dust Bowl Brewing Co. is opening its long-awaited fourth taproom in Livermore, California this week. The new taproom is a key tenant in the Shops at Livermore, adjacent to the world-famous San Francisco Premium Outlets. Livermore is just over an hour from the Dust Bowl Brewing Company brewery and taproom in Turlock.

“We are excited to open our newest taproom in the East Bay,” comments Brett Tate, Founder/Owner of Dust Bowl Brewing Co. “Livermore has a thriving craft beer community that we would like to join. Our location near the San Francisco Premium Outlets gives us great proximity to a bustling retail district and easy access from the 580 Corridor. We have been distributing our beer in the Bay Area since 2015, so we have solid brand awareness in the region. The taproom offers another opportunity to learn about and experience our brand.”

The taproom is at the north-east end of the Shops at Livermore. Both indoor and outdoor spaces are available to guests, furnished with sofas, table seating, balustrades, covered patio vignettes, and communal seating.

With an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, the taproom offers ample space for guests to create their own experience. Outside, there are also fire pits and corn hole boards on the lawn. The bar features a back-to-back tap tower with 30 taps providing a wide selection of Dust Bowl beers and seltzer. The bar also has two dedicated taps for the brewery’s popular smoothie beers. Packaged beers, Growlers and Crowlers to go, and retail items such as t-shirts, hats and glassware are also available.

“Expanding our satellite taprooms is a key strategy for our growth, but more importantly, we just enjoy creating cool spaces for beer fans to immerse themselves in the Dust Bowl brand,” said Brett Honore, owner of Dust Bowl Brewing Co. “And what goes better with beer than a good barbecue?” We are delighted to welcome Hazy Barbecue Livermore Pit Stop as our resident food truck. The Hazy Barbecue team of owners share the same passion for excellence, so we know our guests appreciate their dedication and award-winning food as well.”

Owned by brothers Sean and Brendan Harrigan, Hazy Barbecue Livermore Pit Stop is the company’s second location. Their flagship, Hazy Barbecue, was founded in Danville in late 2020. Hazy Barbecue quickly became a local favorite and was named Best Barbecue in the East Bay by Diablo Magazine in 2023 and 2022.

“We are excited to partner with Dust Bowl,” said Sean Harrigan, co-founder and CEO of Hazy Barbecue. “Since we opened, their beer has been a staple at our 18 Danville beer dispensers. The Dust Bowl team shares our commitment to superior customer service and we can’t wait to bring the Hazy Barbecue Livermore Pit Stop experience to the Livermore community.”

LIVERMORE (KPIX 5) – A power surge in Livermore early Tuesday fried thousands of appliances and likely caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, as it impacted 521 homes.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said it happened around midnight Monday night into Tuesday morning when a palm frond falling across a high voltage distribution line and a lower voltage transmission line at Elaine Avenue and Holmes Street in Livermore.

READ MORE: Long Line Forms Outside Beloved San Francisco Benkyodo Mochi Shop On Final Day

It caused a power surge so powerful it blew the meters off houses and fried electronics.

“I had the TV on and I literally can see the smoke and sparks flying. It was like a big fire, poof, and then it was over. Completedarkness. It was scary,” said Christy Garcia, one of the impacted homeowners.

“Our dishwasher we just bought is like completely destroyed, coffee maker, Xbox, monitors are fried,” Garcia recalled.

Neighbors also said they lost solar panels, pool pumps, hot tubs, TVs, computers and other small electronics, garage door openers, kitchen appliances, HVAC systems, sprinkler controllers – basically anything that was plugged in when the surge hit.

“How do you have that much electricity going through your house at one time to cause that much damage?” Garcia wants to know.

READ MORE: Vallejo Police Chief Seeks Input From Public On Use Of Deadly Force Policies

“We’re extremely busy right now. Non-stop calls,” said Tim Agront, is one of the project managers for Five or Free, a local Livermore electrical company.

Agront told KPIX 5 that they have worked on 36 houses Tuesday and 43 houses Wednesday.

“Cost of repairs that I’ve seen, probably on the high end, would be at least up to $40,000-$50,000 and that’s just in appliances alone,” he says.

PG&E said impacted homeowners can file a claim on their website but told KPIX 5 in a statement that “Although the palm tree was not in PG&Es right of way and we are not responsible for its maintenance, we will review and consider each claim.”

Agront said one way to prevent something like this from damaging electronics in your home is to have a whole house surge protector installed or ensure all electronics are plugged into strip surge protectors before they’re plugged into the wall.

Civil Air Patrol’s San Francisco Bay Group 2 celebrated their return to face-to-face meetings this month with a training day, orientation flights, beacon hunting competition, and other educational activities at Livermore Airport, home of Tri-Valley Composite Squadron 156.

“This activity was the catalyst needed to get our organization out of the pandemic and foster a stronger sense of community,” said Lt. Col. Shawn Lawson, Group 2 commandant.

He said about 160 cadets, adult members, parents and visitors attended the celebration.

The volunteer Civil Air Patrol is the United States Air Force’s civil helper and provides air support in emergencies. Bay Group 2 includes 10 seasons based in Livermore, Concord, San Francisco, Oakland, Hayward, Palo Alto, San Carlos, San Jose and Watsonville.

Because of the pandemic, CAP squadrons have met virtually since March 2020 and did not resume face-to-face meetings until June.
