A pink triangle is seen on top of Twin Peaks behind the Castro district rainbow flag in San Francisco, Tuesday, June 20, 2023. Hundreds of volunteers installed the giant pink triangle made out of cloth and canvas and with pink lights around its edges last week as part of the city’s Pride celebrations. It’s an annual tradition that started in 1995 but this year’s triangle is nearly an acre in size and can be seen up to 20 miles (32 kms.) away. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The giant canvas pink triangle that is one of the LGBTQ+ community’s Pride month symbols in San Francisco is bigger than ever this year. Volunteers said they are taking a stand for their rights amid a national pushback from conservative lawmakers.

Hundreds of volunteers installed the triangle made out of cloth and canvas on San Francisco’s Twin Peaks viewpoint, one of the city’s most popular tourist spots, as part of the city’s Pride celebrations.

At nearly an acre in size and visible from up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) away, this year’s triangle is the largest since the annual tradition started in 1995.

“We’ve had a lot of progress in the last decade: marriage equality and getting rid of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’” said Patrick Carney, co-founder of Friends of the Pink Triangle, the group which organizes the installation each year.

“Since we had so many victories, people are coming out of the woodwork to push us back,” he added.

The pink triangle was used by Nazis during the Holocaust to identify the thousands of gay prisoners who were thrown into concentration camps. Later, gay rights advocates adopted the emblem and turned it into a symbol of love and solidarity.

Organizers said recent legislation that has sought to limit their rights, including Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law banning classroom instruction about sexual orientation, make the pink triangle especially relevant this year.

“Our lives are very under threat right now, particularly Black and brown transgender people,” said volunteer Maureen Futtner. “And I just feel like I need to be active and out and proud.”

The pink triangle will be on display until July 1.

Amazon is stepping up its campaign to put personal work back at the forefront.

The tech giant informed employees working remotely or in cities with smaller offices that they may need to relocate to the company’s largest job centers, The Wall Street Journal reports. Amazon’s largest corporate offices — known as “main centers” — include its Seattle-area headquarters, HQ2 campus in Arlington, Virginia, and locations in New York, San Francisco, and Nashville.

      Courtesy of Amazon

The two new office towers in the Metropolitan Park project, the first phase of Amazon HQ2.

Amazon’s push to return to the office began in February, when the company announced that most employees would have to work in person three days a week. Office staff began to grow massively in May when the company opened the doors to Metropolitan Park, the 2.2 million SF first phase of its HQ2 just outside of Washington, DC

The company is one of many large employers to face worker resistance to moving away from remote work after protests and work stoppages at its Bellevue, Wash., headquarters in late May.

Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s vice president of global economic development, told Bisnow in June that she hadn’t heard a single complaint about the personal work of office workers in the Arlington and Nashville areas, where the company opened a 566K SF building in 2021 as part of a planned operations center.

Further construction at HQ2, Nashville and Bellevue was officially put on hold last year as Amazon said it was reconsidering the use of its physical spaces, but Sullivan said success in filling in the metropolitan park gives the company confidence to potentially resume those plans as early as next year.

In recent months, business executives have taken a firm stance against constant remote work at more and more companies, leading to a surge in office occupancy and occupancy in the second quarter.

Although the company offers relocation bonuses as a carrot for employees it’s asked to move, Amazon has also pulled the stick by encouraging workers who opposed the change to either quit or seek a transfer to other departments, Business Insider reports.

When former San Francisco Mayor Ephraim William Burr wanted to give his son a wedding present, he made it big. Selecting one of the largest available lots in the city, he commissioned Edmund M. Wharf to design a large Italianate-style Victorian building on the still predominantly rural land known as Cow Hollow.

In the 1870s there were still about 30 dairies in the area, hence the neighborhood’s nickname, but the land quickly turned into housing for the city’s elite. In 1772 Vallejo became the home of Edmond Burr and his bride, Anna Barnard, in 1875. It remained in the family as a home for their daughters for almost 100 years before it was given to new owners and was in the hands of only a few families since. Now it’s on the market for $12.9 million.

The house is almost five times the standard size on a plot.

Open houses photography

“The land is highly unusual in San Francisco,” said listing agent Janet Schindler of Sotheby’s International Realty. “The light in this house is like nothing I’ve ever seen. There is never a dark space as it is totally detached.”

At over a quarter of an acre, the original property was even larger, but was split in two in 1971.

Original features of the house have been impeccably preserved.

Open houses photography

Many of the original features of the home have been immaculately preserved, most notably an original redwood paneled family/media/games room. The house was spared from earthquake and fire in 1906.

There are six bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. Although many modern updates have been made to the kitchen and bathrooms over the years, everything is in keeping with the original style of the home.

Open houses photography

To the rear of the house is a one bedroom, one bathroom cottage which historical research by Sotheby’s suggests was added sometime between 1886 and 1893 and was originally used as a photographic studio.

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The 2022 Game Developers Conference (GDC), the world’s largest and longest-running event serving professionals dedicated to the art and science of making games, concluded its 36th edition today, after a week of networking, learning and inspiration. The conference was the largest in San Francisco in the past two years, with a total of 12,000 industry professionals attending at San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center from March 21-25 and a further 5,000 joining on the virtual platform of the conference, which was available to increase attendee accessibility, for a total of 17,000 attendees. The conference prioritized health and safety for all attendees and required proof of vaccination and face masks to be worn indoors. GDC will be returning to the Moscone Convention Center Monday, March 20 to Friday, March 24, 2023. The call for submissions for GDC 2023 will open in the summer.

GDC 2022 featured over 1,000 speakers across over 600 lectures, workshops and roundtable discussions and networking events, physically reuniting the game development community. More than 200 exhibitors showcased their newest technologies, software and services on the GDC Expo Floor, including industry leaders such as Amazon, AMD, ARM, Google, Nintendo, Unity, Wemade and more. The Expo Floor also provided attendees with the opportunity to play some of the most exciting and boundary-pushing independent games, meet the developers at the Independent Games Festival (IGF) Pavilion and to experience the uniquely experimental games of the alt.ctrl.GDC exhibit that is home to games that use alternative controllers.

The conference featured sessions full of insights from some of the biggest names in electronic entertainment. Josh Wardle, creator of the international phenomenon Wordle, gave a talk on how he created, grew and sold the ubiquitous word game, with a focus on all the mistakes made along the way to its status as a huge hit. Top voices spoke on learnings from the creation of hit games including, Baldur’s Gate 3, Clash of Clans, Horizon Forbidden West, Life is Strange: True Colors, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Sable, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience at Disney World, classics such as Wolfenstein 3D and Q-bert and much more.

A centerpiece of GDC was the multi-part presentation “GDC Main Stage: The Developer’s Renaissance,” which focused on the future of game development and the evolving workplace with esteemed speakers from Eidos-Montréal, PlayStation Studios and Devolver Digital/DeepWell DTx. The speakers discussed finding the right balance in a remote/hybrid work environment, taking a stronger approach to addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and empowering developers to “kill it with kindness.”

GDC 2022 celebrated the top developers of the past year with the 24th annual Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards and the 22nd annual Game Developers Choice Awards. Daniel Mullins Games’ genre-bending, deck-building roguelike game, Inscryption, made history by being the first game ever to win both the Seumas McNally Grand Prize in the IGF Awards and the Game of the Year Award in the Game Developers Choice Awards in the same night. An archive of the IGF and GDCA ceremonies can be viewed at http://twitch.tv/gdc.

“It’s been an honor to reunite the exceptional video game development community at GDC 2022 and to share in the love for games and each other that has brought so many people to San Francisco this week,” said Katie Stern, who oversees the GDC as VP of Entertainment Media at Informa Tech. “The learnings, accomplishments and people that have made up GDC 2022, have made it clear that the video game industry community is stronger than ever and we’re already so excited for what is to come in GDC 2023.”

SACRAMENTO–California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who three years ago placed a moratorium on executions, now is moving to dismantle the nation’s largest death row by moving all condemned inmates to other prisons within two years.

The goal is to turn the section at San Quentin State Prison into a “positive, healing environment.”

“We are starting the process of closing death row to repurpose and transform the current housing units into something innovative and anchored in rehabilitation,” corrections department spokeswoman Vicky Waters told The Associated Press.

California, which last carried out an execution in 2006, is one of 28 states that maintain death rows, along with the US government, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. While other states like Illinois have abolished executions, California is merging its condemned inmates into the general prison population with no expectation that any will face execution anytime in the near future.

Oregon similarly transferred its much smaller condemned population to other inmate housing two years ago.

RELATED: Gov. Newsom plans to halt executions in California

Newsom, a Democrat, imposed a moratorium on executions in 2019 and shut down the state’s execution chamber at San Quentin, north of San Francisco. Now his administration is turning on its head a 2016 voter-approved initiative intended to speed up executions by capitalizing on one provision that allowed inmates to be moved off death row.

Corrections officials began a voluntary two-year pilot program in January 2020 that as of Friday had moved 116 of the state’s 673 condemned male inmates to one of seven other prisons that have maximum security facilities and are surrounded by lethal electrified fences.

They intend to submit permanent proposed regulations within weeks that would make the transfers mandatory and “allow for the repurposing of all death row housing units,” Waters said.

The ballot measure approved six years ago also required condemned inmates to participate in prison jobs, with 70% of the money going for restitution to their victims, and corrections officials said that’s their goal with the transfers. By the end of last year, more than $49,000 in restitution had been collected under the pilot program.

Newsom’s proposed budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 seeks $1.5 million to find new uses for the vacant condemned housing.

It notes that death row and its supporting activities are in the same area as facilities used for rehabilitation programs for medium-security San Quentin inmates. The money would be used to hire a consultant to “develop options for (the) space focused on creating a positive, healing environment to provide increased rehabilitative, educational and health care opportunities.”

San Quentin’s never-used $853,000 execution chamber is in a separate area of the prison, and there are no plans to “repurpose” that area, Waters said.

“We will continue to support San Francisco Residents through a variety of programs that Veritas is currently participating in or initiating, including the Open Doors program, which provides free furnished apartments to victims of domestic violence, forest fire survivors, and cancer patients; the Home Bridge program, which helps families find help in a time of crisis, emergency, or unforeseen circumstances through partnerships with Ronald McDonald House Charities and UCSF; and through our partnerships with Project Open Hand, HealthRight 360, Self-Help for the Elderly, and other programs, “added Jerden.
