But the younger Pederson isn’t on the regular team, instead, he’s been signed as a tight end to the practice squad, ESPN reported.

Earlier this week, the elder Pederson made the difficult call that his son was cut from the team to make it to the 53-man roster, Sports Illustrated reported.

Josh Pederson was an undrafted free agent from Louisiana-Monroe. He had spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and the Kansas City Chiefs. He also was playing in the USFL for the Houston Gamblers, where he caught 24 passes for 325 yards in 10 games, but his contract there ended earlier this year to be able to join an at-the-time unnamed NFL team, ESPN reported.

Despite floating around to several teams, Josh Pederson has never been on the field during the NFL’s regular season.

ESPN reported that Doug Pederson’s decision wasn’t a surprise. He was asked on Monday if he wanted to be the one who told Josh if he was off hypothetically the team. The coach responded that he had to give his son bad news in the past, but then said in all seriousness that the team’s general manager Trent Baalke would treat Josh the same as any other player.

“I’d want to tell him,” Doug Pederson said. “Trent would want to visit with him as well, and I definitely want to talk to him and just let him know — I mean, he’s been through this process before with a couple other teams last year. And I’m very familiar with it, obviously, as a former player, and walk him through the process and let him know that everything’s going to be OK.”

The Jags cut more than two dozen players before the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline, NBC Sports reported.

Former Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt has died.

He was 91.

The team announced Brandt’s death Thursday morning.

Brandt was the team’s vice president of player personnel from 1960 to 1988. He was fired by Jerry Jones when Jones bought the team in 1989, ESPN reported.

Before joining America’s Team, Brandt had graduated from the University of Wisconsin. He became a part-time scout for the Los Angeles Rams, before going over to the San Francisco 49ers full-time in 1958.

He was the first chief talent scout for the Cowboys when they were created in 1960.

Brandt adopted the use of computers in scouting and evaluations and helped draft such iconic players as Roger Staubach and Herschel Walker. He also signed Drew Pearson, Cliff Harris and Everson Walls, the team said.

Brandt along with coach Tom Landry and general manager Tex Schramm, lead the team to 20 consecutive winning seasons and five Super Bowl appearances, winning the big game twice, ESPN reported.

Jones said in a news release announcing Brandt’s death:

“We are so deeply saddened by the passing of Gil Brandt – a true icon and pioneer of our sport. Gil was at the very core of the early success of the Dallas Cowboys and continued to serve as a great ambassador for the organization for decades beyond that. His contributions cemented his spot in the Ring of Honor. He was my friend and a mentor not only to me, but to countless executives, coaches, players and broadcasters across the National Football League, which rightfully earned him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame where his legacy will be celebrated forever.

“He was an innovator and set the standard for excellence in player acquisition. From the creation of the NFL Combine to revolutionizing the NFL Draft, Gil finished his over six-decade NFL career with an eye towards the future of the league and teaching fans about the sport he loved as a radio broadcaster. Gil was as good a storyteller as it gets, with a memory as sharp as a tack. His dedication to, and passion for, this game left a lasting impact on generations of Hall of Fame players and coaches. There are very few people that have been able to have the kind of generational impact that he did. Gil was as dedicated to growing this league and sport as anyone ever was, and we are all grateful and better for it.

“Our hearts go out to Gil’s wife, Sara, his son Hunter and all of Gil’s family and friends.”

Brandt was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor in 2019 and was installed as part of the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 2018, ESPN reported.

SAN FRANCISCO — (AP) — San Francisco right-hander Alex Cobb carried a no-hit bid through eight against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night with the help of a scoring change and a sliding eighth-inning catch by Austin Slater upheld in a video review.

Nick Senzel was credited with a single in the third inning on a two-hopper that third baseman Casey Schmitt snagged with a backhand grab. The rookie’s throw from foul territory was high and pulled a leaping J.D. Davis off the first-base bag.

Official scorer Chris Thoms originally called the play a hit, then changed it to an error.

With two outs in the eighth, Will Benson hit a pop to short center. Slater sprinted in, leaped forward and caught the ball backhanded while prone. Cobb raised both arms in celebration.

After a period of suspense, crew chief Bill Miller announced “The call on the field stands,” and the crowd roared.

Senzel was the only runner to reach through eight innings off Cobb, who struck out seven and threw 113 pitches. The Giants led 5-0.

Cobb was trying to win for the first time in eight starts since July 5.
