TORONTO — Brandon Belt said before the start of this series that he hoped to beat Logan Webb and joked, “I just want to embarrass his whole family.” The former Giants first baseman certainly did his best and batted at his 739 total feet of flyballs in their first two appearances, but Toronto didn’t have to leave the stadium to beat Webb harder than any other team this season.

The Blue Jays brought nine men to the plate and tagged Webb for five runs in the first inning, putting the Giants in a rare hole that proved too deep to climb out. The Giants lost the middlegame of their series 6-1 and lost away at Oracle Park for the first time since Memorial Day weekend. They broke a San Francisco-era record of 10 consecutive away wins.

A night after the Giants defeated the Blue Jays’ top starter Kevin Gausman with a game of bullpen, Toronto dosed San Francisco with the same medicine. A quartet of Blue Jays relievers limited the Giants to one run on six hits — three by LaMonte Wade Jr. — or the number Toronto hit in the first inning alone.

Austin Slater, coming on for Michael Conforto (left hamstring strain) early in the second half, made the Giants’ only run with a 402-foot solo shot over Tim Horton’s shield in right midfield. The Giants only got two other runners into goal position, Wade with a wild pitch after his leadoff single in the first and Patrick Bailey with a scoring double in the seventh inning.

The Blue Jays’ five earned runs in the first inning was the most Webb had ever conceded in a single inning and represented their worst season for a single game.

Belt entered the box at the bottom of the first pass, a run was already on the board and a man was on first base. At first it looked like he’d executed his intentions and blasted a ball deep into left center field, but had to settle for an RBI double as the ball landed a few yards from the wall. He fell just short again on his second attack, sending Luis Matos onto the runway in midfield for the lowest point of the game.

As Belt returned to the dugout, he appeared to exchange a few words with his former teammate up the hill.

While the Blue Jays marked Webb for six hits — four doubles — in the first inning, Belt’s 98.8 mph two-bagger was their hardest-hit ball of the inning until a 109-mph line-drive single from Danny Jansen won the last run. According to Statcast, George Springer’s double to lead from the inning and Daulton Varshos, driving in Belt, each had a 16% or less chance of hitting. It was only the fourth time in the Statcast era (since 2015) that a pitcher had allowed four doubles in an inning and neither registered an exit speed of 100 mph or more.

After the big first inning, Webb managed to give up 11 of the last 13 batters he faced but left Ross Stripling to start the sixth inning. Stripling, recurring for the first time since May 17 (low back strain), won the last three innings but conceded a run on three hits and had three strikeouts.

The first inning cost the Giants more than the game. Conforto was sent off for a pinch hitter early in the second period after chasing several balls down right field, including a foul by Matt Chapman that catapulted Conforto into foul territory and eventually into the waist-high wall while he was recorded the second of the inning.

Illumina kündigt mehrere Entlassungsrunden an

Illumina gab außerdem Pläne bekannt, seinen i3-Satellitencampus in San Diego aufzugeben.

It’s spring sales season when prices are increasing month-on-month, and they did, but that wasn’t enough.

By Wolf Richter for WOLF STREET.

It’s still the spring sales season, with sales volumes and prices almost always increasing month-on-month, and that’s happened this spring too, but not enough, and compared to a year ago, the 20 cities in the S&P CoreLogic Case-Der The Shiller Home Price Index released today fell 1.7%, the sharpest year-on-year decline since 2012, after falling 1.1% the previous month after Fed money printers made gargantuan gains during the pandemic. The 20-city index is now 3.5% below its peak in June last year:

Today’s data for “April” is a three-month moving average of home prices for sales recorded in February, March and April in public records. This is the spring sales season, when prices always rise from the previous month, even during the first real estate crisis.

On a monthly basis, the 20-city index increased by 1.7% in April compared to March, but that was significantly lower growth than in April 2022 (+2.3%) and April 2021 (+2.2%). Why have prices continued to fall year-on-year:

The list of year-on-year price declines just keeps getting longer. Prices are now down in 10 of the 20 metro areas covered by the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index. Here are the metros with year-on-year price declines:

Seattle: -12.4%

San Francisco Bay Area: -11.1%

Las Vegas: -6.6%

Phoenix: -6.1%

San Diego: -5.6%

Portland: -5.2%

Denver: -4.5%

Los Angeles: -3.2%

Dallas: -2.9%

Washington DC: -0.5%

In 19 of the 20 markets, prices have fallen from their respective highs (Period: May to July 2022). The exception is the New York City Metro, which surpassed its previous peak of July 2022. From their respective highs, prices have fallen the most in these metropolitan areas:

Seattle: -12.9%

San Francisco Bay Area: -12.0%

Las Vegas: -9.9%

Phoenix: -9.4%

Dallas: -8.5%

San Diego: -6.1%

Portland: -6.0%

Denver: -5.6%

Los Angeles: -4.2%

Tampa: -3.0%

Seattle Subway:

And this is the situation for condos in the San Francisco Bay Area: after a big surge, they’re now back to where they were in May 2018:

Methodology. The Case-Shiller Index uses the “sales pairs” method and compares sales in the current month to previous sales of the same homes. The price changes are weighted based on how long ago the previous sale was, and adjustments are made for DIY and other factors (methodology). This “selling pairs” method makes the Case-Shiller Index a more reliable indicator than median price indices, but lags behind by months.

The Case-Shiller indices were set at 100 for the year 2000. The Los Angeles Index score of 405 in April is up 305% since 2000. Los Angeles is the No. 1 in the “Splendid Housing Bubble” in terms of price increases since 2000. Miami and San Diego are just behind, both also up over 300%.

The remaining six markets in the Case Shiller Index have experienced far lower home price inflation since 2000 and do not qualify for this list of the most beautiful housing bubbles.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — There’s an ample amount of new material coming to your digital retailer of choice. I just haven’t heared of 90% of it. So, my blind stab in the dark would be to recommend “Godland” and “Other People’s Children” based on their distribution (Criterion and Music Box Films). I’m curious about “Wonderwell,” the final film to feature Carrie Fisher. “I Am T-Rex” just sounds bonkers until you realize it’s animated. There are also numerous horror options. “The Ones You Didn’t Burn” is a fantastic title.

It’s a completely different story for this week’s Blu-ray and DVD titles. You might have heard of “Avatar: The Way of Water.” You should (but likely aren’t) familiar with “Polite Society,” a incredibly entertaining romp from Nida Manzoor(“Lady Parts”). If you’re in a more serious mood, “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” is an interesting war drama that devolves into a Rambo film.

For me, the excitement comes via the Criterion Collection’s release of “The Servant,” a toff-kilter thriller from playwright Harold Pinter.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster

Studio Synopsis: Vicaria is a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. Inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER thematically challenges our ideas of life and death. Bomani J. Story, the film’s writer and director, crafts a thrilling tale about a family that, despite the terrors of systemic pressure, will survive and be reborn again.

Clean

Studio Synopsis: Trauma cleaners clean spaces that no one else will touch – hoarder sites, meth-labs, murder scenes, deaths and suicides. They clean the homes of some of society’s most vulnerable people – the neglected, the lonely, the addicted, and the mentally unwell. When illness forces her away from her beloved trauma cleaning business, Sandra Pankhurst faces up to her traumatic past and begins a search for her birth mother. Meanwhile, her workers approach this difficult work with camaraderie and humor, bringing hope to their clients despite carrying trauma of their own. Clean shows us that life is more fragile than we might think, but there is hope and reassurance in human connection.

Coyote

Studio Synopsis: A story of forbidden love in a dystopian future where teleportation technology enables two refugees to escape genocide. When they trust the wrong back-alley teleporter, Ekaterina (Therica Wilson-Read) and Anya (Borisalava Stratieva) are separated. In a desperate attempt to be reunited, our heroines are entwined in an insidious human trafficking ring involving corrupt politicians.

Godland

Studio Synopsis: The struggle between the strictures of religion and our own brute animal nature plays out amid the beautifully forbidding landscapes of remote Iceland in this stunning psychological epic from director Hlynur Pálmason. In the late nineteenth century, Danish priest Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove) makes the perilous trek to Iceland’s southeastern coast with the intention of establishing a church. There, the arrogant man of God finds his resolve tested as he confronts the harsh terrain, temptations of the flesh, and the reality of being an intruder in an unforgiving land. What unfolds is a transfixing journey into the heart of colonial darkness attuned to both the majesty and terrifying power of the natural world.

Lustrously disorienting cinematography and a masterful script by playwright Harold Pinter merge in The Servant, a tour de force of mounting psychosexual menace.

Sunday’s MLB action started with a bang when Pete Alonso made a surprise return to the Mets lineup about two weeks early after suffering a wrist injury. That was the injury headliner of the day, but there’s still a lot more to come after 15 games.

MLB Injury Report: Monday, June 19

Pete Alonso (wrist), New York Mets — Well, that was quick. When Alonso was brought to the IL last week with a bruised bone and a sprained wrist, he was expected to be out for at least three weeks. But just 11 days later, the first baseman was back in the Mets’ lineup as of Sunday afternoon. He went 0-4 with three strikeouts, so there’s clearly some rust, but Alonso seems good enough to swing the racquet normally:

Julio Urias (thigh)/Daniel Hudson (knee), Los Angeles Dodgers – Finally, some good news for the Dodgers’ pitching team, who have been struggling lately, particularly during this weekend’s win over the San Francisco Giants. Urias, who has been out since last month with a thigh strain, and Hudson, who has not played at all this year while in rehab after knee surgery, are expected to rejoin the team before the end of the month:

Evan Phillips probably holds the most leverage spots, but given how much manager Dave Roberts loves to shuffle and combine based on matchups, Hudson should still have a lot of work to do in the ninth inning.

Sean Murphy (hamstring), Atlanta Braves – As expected, Murphy was absent from Sunday’s squad after leaving Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury, but there was good news nonetheless: an MRI showed only an irritation and no actual strain. The backstop may need a few more days off, but the team is hoping, at least for now, that it won’t need to be deployed to the IL.

Casey Schmitt (forearm)/Alex Cobb (oblique), San Francisco Giants – It was a bad day for batters, who were plunked when Schmitt took a pitch off his arm at Dodger Stadium. The rookie was forced to leave the game but it appears that was just a precaution – his x-rays were negative and he should be back in the line-up soon.

Cobb, meanwhile, was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. While we’ve watched this type of injury ambush pitchers for several weeks, the Giants don’t seem overly concerned. Manager Gabe Kapler told reporters the righty felt some tightness throwing a bullpen over the weekend, which the team wanted to do to ensure he had more time to get things right. It’s possible that Cobb just missed a start or two.

Ian Hamilton (groin)/Nestor Cortes (rotator cuff), New York Yankees – Not much was going well for the Yankees this weekend in Boston, but at least there was some movement on the injury front. Hamilton, who had emerged as a key midfielder, scored twice in a clean inning in his first rehab appearance at Double-A Somerset. The right-winger later told reporters he expects to need at least two more sorties but could be ready by next weekend.

As for Cortes, he’s throwing for the first time since he was sidelined with a rotator cuff tear earlier this month:

There’s still a long way to go for the left-hander — he probably won’t return to the New York rotation before the All-Star break — but it’s a start.

Tanner Houck (face), Boston Red Sox – The Red Sox issued an update on Houck a day after the right-hander was hit in the face by a line drive.

Houck did suffer some sort of facial fracture — and not just the contusion he was originally diagnosed with — and was placed on the injured list, but all things considered, the outcome could have been a lot worse. Thankfully, it looks like the right will be fine, although there’s no timeline for his return to the mound just yet. The team hasn’t revealed who might fill Houck’s place in the rotation; Nick Pivetta and Corey Kluber would be obvious candidates.

jonathan india, Cincinnati Reds – India equalized early in the eighth inning with a home run on backfield, but were forced out of the game two innings later after being knocked out by a double play. Good news for Cincy: The Reds clinched the win in their 10th game for the eighth consecutive year and their second baseman appears to be doing well.

Lars Nootbaar (back), St Louis Cardinals — We’d say Nootbaar seems ready to return to St. Louis:

Reports surfaced early Sunday afternoon that the outfielder — who started a rehab stint at Triple-A Memphis this week — could leave the IL as early as Monday, and he responded by hitting a home run a few hours later. The team won’t make a decision until they see how his sore back is reacting, but it certainly sounds like he’ll be back in the next few days.

Alejandro Kirk (Hand), Toronto Blue Jays — Kirk was another pitch hit victim on Sunday. Toronto’s loss to the Texas Rangers left hand lacerated and bruised. X-rays were thankfully negative, but it remains to be seen how long it will be before the backing can swing a racquet comfortably again. Danny Jansen has had the most starts behind the plate lately anyway.

Miguel Amaya (Wrist), Chicago Cubs – We told you that there were a lot of batters plunked on Sunday. Amayas was one of the scariest, a 96mph fastball right off his wrist that left him prone in pain for quite a while, but manager David Ross said his catcher seemed to avoid anything too serious:

The rookie has been swinging a hot racquet since his debut last month, earning more and more playing time off the record.

Jeimer Candelario (thumb), Washington Nationals — Candelario was left out of the Nats’ lineup late on Sunday, and manager Davey Martinez told reporters after the game that his third baseman suffered a bruised thumb bone during Saturday’s game. He’s under consideration on a day-to-day basis for now, but the team will likely wait until Monday or Tuesday to see how they react before making a decision on a return.

Michael A Taylor (Head), Minnesota Twins — If Amaya didn’t have the scariest HBP of the day, then Taylor certainly did. The midfielder was hit in the back of the head by a mistaken curveball by Tigers substitute Alex Lange in the eighth inning, catching him just under his batting helmet as he tried to duck out of the way. Taylor left the game with a so-called head bruise and eventually went to the coaching bench under his own steam. Manager Rocco Baldelli said initial tests showed no concussion-like symptoms. He’s already been ruled out of Monday’s game but it’s too early to tell if he’ll need a call-up for IL.

Matt Vierling (rear), Detroit Tigers — Vierling was also late and missed Sunday’s game with back spasms just days after returning from an IL stay with back pain. That doesn’t bode well, of course, although the team hasn’t offered an update yet. The outfielder has .529 hits so far this month – and even got endorsed by the Oakland Athletics Twitter account at the All-Star Game – so it would be a huge loss to be forced to miss any more time.

Physicians at Waukesha Memorial Hospital are no exception and now have a new weapon for cutting, coagulating and vaporizing unwanted tissue: the KTP laser.

The laser, nicknamed “Louie,” is the hospital’s second. An argon laser was purchased in 1984 and is used almost exclusively for eye surgery.

Unlike the argon laser, the KTP laser has more diverse uses, said Albert Motzel, the hospital’s vice president of medical affairs.

“The special advantage of the KTP is that the transmission takes place via fiber optics,” he said. “The KTP laser was designed for use with fiber optic ducts. The original argon lasers were used as the beam.”

We’ve been at full steam this week and with a clean throw yesterday we were able to increase our weekly record to 15-5.

Let’s wrap up successfully with a complete list of Friday games and bets.

The model

The process is relatively simple. First, I assume that the (implicit) run totals for both teams are roughly efficient throughout the game. This is the case in most cases. This saves me the trouble of predicting the total number of runs scored in the game – and allows me to focus solely on “when” and not “how many”.

Next, I created a database of pitchers’ first-time performance during the order versus their overall stats. Since the latter will presumably factor into the game total, I wanted to find out if those runs are coming early or late.

Most — but not all — MLB starters do slightly better early in games, but there is some variation in elevation. The model uses xFIP (expected Fielding Independent Pitching) as the ERA predictor of choice.

But that’s only half the battle, the other half is made up of crimes. To do this, I looked at what percentage of a team’s total runs are produced by the top three batters in the lineup.

While a first inning run is scored, by definition it takes at least four batsmen to get on the plate, but one of the first three must actually score. The metric of choice here is wRC+, based on each team’s predicted lineup for the day.

This is somewhat of a tradeoff, as lineups (and totals) can change throughout the day, especially when key contributors miss time. However, in my experience, the inefficiency of the morning lines more than makes up for the gaps in the model.

However, be wary if Mike Trout, for example, is considered a doubt for the evening’s game.

The picks

For all of the tips below, I’ll provide the choice, best line, and threshold I would bet on. These will be published in the morning. So, if important news is published between posting and reading, be sure to take that into account.

Rather than betting on the traditional YRFI/NRFI, on rare occasions they will specifically bet on one team or the other to score a run, which is only a betting option at DraftKings as of this writing.

Because the model treats each team individually, it is sometimes assumed that a team will receive a larger percentage of run equity in the first inning than the betting lines allow for.

NRFI odds and tips for Friday 2nd June

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals NRFI: Thanks to the nine games, we have a good starting position here. However, both pitchers have solid first-in-order stats, and these teams rank 29th and 30th when it comes to the percentage of their output from the top three hitters.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates YRFI: This game has an even higher overall score at 9.5, with both teams roughly average in top 3 hitter performance. Both starters have solid first lap splits but not enough to overcome the other factors.

Colorado Rockies vs. Kansas City Royals YRFI: This is another 9.5 run total game, although there are two relatively weak offenses overall. On the plus side, both handle a relatively high proportion of their offense from the top of their respective lineups.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros NRFI: We have a strong duel here where two teams I generally prefer to bet YRFIs on against two pitchers I like to bet NRFIs on. Both Shohei Ohtani and Framber Valdez have excellent first time-through-the-order numbers and should have what it takes to deal with all the star hitters they face in the first inning.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees YRFI: Tonight in LA is Clayton Kershaw vs. Luis Severino, a match that sounds better for the NRFI on paper.

The model likes the yes-runs side, though, mostly because by this point in his career, Kershaw has become a “feeling” pitcher who’s getting into games better and better.

Severino has a 1.59 ERA in two starts, but has xFIP and SIERA scores in the mid-four range, so it could be a step backwards for him too.

Baltimore Orioles vs. San Francisco Giants YRFI: Based on the odds, this is my favorite bet tonight. I’m shocked that we’re getting plus money here as both teams are top-heavy offensive players. Also, neither pitcher is particularly dominant the first time in the sequence.
