SAN MATEO – With the top nine teams in the preseason state poll winning their opening games, there is little change in this week’s ratings for California Community College Football Coaches Association members, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. Reigning 3C2A state champion College of San Mateo continues to lead the rankings, ahead of 2022 runner-up Riverside City College.

Among the coaches, City College of San Francisco made the only significant move, jumping to No. 3 (from seventh) and taking four first place votes, after a statement 58-14 triumph at No. 25 preseason pick Santa Rosa JC. San Mateo held off host Sierra, 37-34, and grabbed the other six first place votes – giving Bay 6 team members all the top coaches association ballots. The California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA), kept its top four teams the same but CCSF made a leap in that ranking as well, going from a tie for seventh into the No. 5 spot.

Moving up successfully to the National (state championship Division) from the American Division were now No. 14 Citrus (in the south), with a 34-28 triumph over College of the Canyons, and No. 23 Feather River (in the north), 32-13 over Chabot. Feather River has a state (and national) leading 22 game winning streak, ahead of Citrus (with 15), those skeins mostly stemming from American Division games. San Mateo leads the “National” with a 7-game streak.

Butte won the lone overtime opener, 23-20 over College of the Sequoias, and jumped two spots to No. 7 this week.

There could be more significant changes next week, with several top matchups this Saturday: San Mateo hosts No. 22 Sequoias. No. 6 Golden West visits Riverside. No. 4 Mt. San Antonio travels to No. 9 Ventura.  No. 8 American River entertains No. 20 Laney. Co-No. 14 San Diego Mesa goes to No. 10 Cerritos.

San Francisco saw the biggest increase in worker visits to the office in the country during July, according to Placer.ai, which uses cell phone data to track traffic in 800 buildings across 11 cities nationwide. 

San Francisco office visits were up 38.3 percent year-over-year, with second-place Washington D.C. coming in at 36.1 percent and New York a distant third at 16.1 percent. San Francisco also had the most ground to make up, given that it is still down 55.8 percent from July 2019 — the biggest pre-pandemic downshift in the country. Still, the city has made great strides in bringing workers back to downtown since the pre-vaccine depths of late 2020 and early 2021, when office visits were nearly 90 percent below July 2019 levels. 

Foot traffic in general downtown has seen a “significant uptick” this summer compared to one year ago, according to Dina Gourveia, Avison Young’s Market Intelligence Manager for the West. She said via email that increased tourism has been a big contributor as well as return to office mandates that may finally be starting to take hold after continued resistance from employees. 

“More businesses are seeing the importance of in-person work collaboration, therefore we also saw tenant activity increase compared to last year,” she said. “A fair number of those tenants are still working out occupancy needs following layoffs and restructuring. We anticipate further stabilization moving into the fall and winter months.”

Derek Daniels, Colliers’ research director for the Bay Area, said via email that the year-over-year growth was “encouraging” and that the brokerage is “bullish that RTO will continue to pick up in September and (is) expecting a general push in getting workers back into the physical office at least some of the time.” 

The other cities in the Placer survey also made inroads on their pre-pandemic office gaps, with nationwide office visits up 16 percent year-over-year. That could be due to an increase in return-to-office mandates, but it’s difficult to draw a direct connection, according to Placer’s Ethan Chernofsky.

“It’s difficult to say with any certainty whether shifts in return-to-office trends are driven by specific companies, city-led initiatives or a normal evolution of hybrid work standards,” he said via email. “The impact, however, is significant in that it brings needed visits back to office-oriented areas and the retailers and restaurants that rely on that traffic.”

Nationwide, July office visits were 37 percent below 2019 levels, indicating the continued strength of the hybrid model, Chernofsky said. That could mean that visits end up reduced only on certain days of the week or periods of time.

Washington D.C. now has the most recovered market but is still 22.4 percent off its pre-pandemic office visit figures, while second-place New York is down by nearly one-quarter.

“It is hard to imagine a reality where hybrid work’s impact doesn’t continue to make a significant difference in office visitation,” Chernofsky said.

Amid mounting criticism of escalating crime in her city, San Francisco Mayor London Breed has urged people not to jump to conclusions about the high-profile murder of Cash App founder Bob Lee and a separate attack on a former fire commissioner.

Lee was stabbed to death while visiting San Francisco last week. The police have not released any information about his death, nor have they made any arrests.

A day after his brutal murder, former fire commissioner Don Carmignani was beaten by Garett Doty outside his mother’s house. Doty’s attorney claims Carmignani pepper sprayed him first, provoking the attack.

Carmignani has since appealed to Breed to make policy changes to make the city safer.

Instead of heeding those calls, she defended the city on Saturday, even appearing to imply that the incidents were not examples of senseless crime.

“When some facts about many of these cases come out, people will be surprised,” Breed told ABC News, without giving further details.

She also claimed that social media, where many had complained about the state of the city, was exacerbating the problem.

“It’s really aggravated events like this and people jumping to conclusions about what they think is happening.”

Neither Lee’s family nor Carmignani have yet responded to her comments.

According to Breed’s office, the San Francisco Police Department is still short of 500 officers to keep the city safe.

The city is now providing an additional $25 million to cover overtime pay for officers still on the job.

Breed claimed on Saturday that this would be enough to ease the crisis.

Democratic city manager Joel Engardino is among those urging the mayor to do more.

“For a city our size, we’re short of more than 500 civil servants.” Hundreds more civil servants may retire in June, and many will. The last police academy graduated 12 new officers. The current academy has only eight cadets.

“It’s not enough if we’re missing 500. That shows me that more money is not the only solution.” Yes, we need this overtime funding.

“But we need to talk about the real reason we have a police staffing crisis — because too few people want to be police officers anymore,” he said in a recent statement.

Harrowing surveillance footage shows Lee stumbling through the city streets after being stabbed to death around 2:30 a.m.

The father and technology investor was visiting from Miami, where he now lives.

He died in hospital after suffering at least two stab wounds, but little else is known about his killing.

The video – first revealed by DailyMail.com – showed him begging a taxi driver for help and stumbling around outside an apartment building.

Meanwhile, one of downtown San Francisco’s largest supermarkets was forced to close just a year after it opened due to widespread drug use, theft and aggressive behavior towards employees.

Organic food giant Whole Foods opened a new “flagship” location on Trinity Place in the city’s Tenderloin area in March 2022, hoping to revive visitor numbers after two years of draconian COVID restrictions have severely impacted businesses in the area had.

But a spokesman for Whole Foods said the store was closed last night due to staff safety concerns.

“We are only closing our Trinity location for now,” the spokesman said in a statement. “If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in store, we will consider reopening our Trinity location.”

MINNEAPOLIS — Some Giants started their Tuesday morning with an excursion: a drive into the woods, some time for a swim in the woods, and then a dip in the cool waters of Lake Minnetonka. Tyler Rogers took a deep breath of pine-scented air. John Brebbia has been in the sun long enough to turn pink. Sean Manaea and Logan Webb tried to outdo each other with cannonball jumps from the dock.

“Yes, I know,” said Alex Cobb. “I was depressed that I couldn’t walk.”

Cobb couldn’t jump into any of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes on Tuesday. He had to assist in a different kind of dunk: a baptism and rebirth for a team that weathered a rough April but responded by playing well enough long enough to allow for a fresh start. Cobb delivered a strong seven innings, the red-hot Michael Conforto turned the tally with a two-run home run in the seventh, and Camilo Doval delivered another dominant ninth inning as the Giants beat the Twins 4-3 to take their record to 24: 24 Evened Prepare for a chance to win this three-game streak at Target Field.

The Giants have won seven of eight games and hit the .500 mark, and while it’s not accurate to call it a complete fresh start (the Dodgers are 31-19 after all), there’s something about the prospect of climbing rather than digging invigorating.

“What we did in April without a full roster and with some really difficult travel… we knew we were going to get healthy and start a run,” Cobb said. “In order to reach your goal, the most important thing is to limit the damage. We did a good job in April to fight and not let the runners get too long. And now we’re playing the ball we expected when we left camp. We’ve had some great moments with guys who weren’t with us when we broke camp. Just good energy to run the bases hard. So I think this is more the type of baseball that we want to play. We are excited about what is to come.”

The Giants gained momentum by addressing several deficiencies that dragged them down. Some of the repairs are easy to spot. Conforto was still hitting .168 on May 9, halting rallies with strikeouts and leaving runners on base — a reasonably predictable start for a hitter who missed all of 2022 while rehabilitating from shoulder surgery. His double helped set up the Giants’ two-run rally in the sixth round as they forced major league ERA leader Sonny Gray to pitch more than 100 before recording an inning out. Patrick Bailey and Bryce Johnson hit bases-loaded walks against the Twins’ struggling bullpen. Then Conforto’s home run in game seven was his sixth in 12 games. He hits .333 with 14 RBIs over that stretch.

“I was able to gain an advantage and I’m not late for a fastball,” said Conforto. “(Gray) was pretty good, but we put together good bats.”

Cobb said he understands how difficult it is for Conforto to get back up to game pace after a missed season in the lonely world of rehab drills. He had to do it after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015.

“The game is so fast and so crisp,” said Cobb. “Being out all the time, not having a team to help him with rehab and staying fit, then coming into spring training and not missing a shot – now he’s a feared hitter in the box. It seems like everyone in the lineup has good shots, but when they hit the ball, the ball goes away. I mean, the ball went on today. I don’t think it would stand a chance at the altitude. But he flipped it back and shot it up in the air.”

The Giants adjusted their highest strikeout rate in the major leagues in April (27.5 percent) to be a little closer to the middle of the field (22.7 percent) in May, partly through a personnel change (David Villar), but partly also by demanding better performance from others (Conforto, Blake Sabol)—rather than by compromising their aggressiveness in the zone.

The Giants’ other obvious improvement came from the bullpen, which showed signs of stabilizing even before the relievers posted a 1.22 ERA in their last seven games. Scott Alexander’s turbosink gets the results the Giants have come to expect. In the eighth inning, he registered three groundballs. Brebbia has put his rocky beginning behind him and his four-seam fastball is posting a career-best whiff rate of 37.5 percent, which ranks in the 90th percentile among major league pitchers. Taylor Rogers may need two clean months before he can see his ERA on the scoreboard, and he’s not quite back in the starting role ahead of Doval, who everyone was envisioning – Giants manager Gabe Kapler picked Alexander over him by eighth Place to throw Tuesday – but he’s trending in the right direction.

And if the Giants can get the kind of effective long-term relief they got from Manaea and Tristan Beck on Monday, they should be able to play a lot more games through to the end than they did in April.

But the Giants are unlikely to come back from a three-run deficit to win a game like Tuesday’s without also making a few less obvious improvements.

Too many games they fell behind in April continued to fall out of reach due to no plays being made on the field, leading to starters like Cobb throwing extra shots, leading to struggling substitutes getting into the game sooner Games had to kick in when they otherwise would, which became a problem and a fatal loop. But the Giants’ infield defense, which looked solid early in the season, has steadily improved. And the full-back, which was a nighttime disaster last season, wasn’t a problem at all.

The Giants started Tuesday in fifth place in the major leagues with nine outs above average, including plus-1 in the outfield. Last year they finished third-worst with minus 33 OAA, including minus 25 in the outfield.

Bailey is an improvement behind the plate. Casey Schmitt was a revelation with a Statcast-shining arm no matter where the Giants placed him in the infield. And JD Davis continues to play third base.

That’s the other factor at play in the Giants’ record saving streak: Most things that went well in April continue to go well. LaMonte Wade Jr. keeps getting back to base from the starting position. Thairo Estrada, who doubled before Conforto’s home run in the seventh round, continues to hit. And since cars are now constantly pouring in at Doval’s drive-through window, he no longer falsifies the orders.

Doval’s save Tuesday night was his tenth straight conversion, a career best. He saved 10 of the Giants’ 13 wins in May, leading the saves among NL substitutes.

What impresses Kapler most about Doval’s run? That he finds a way to salvage games when he doesn’t have his best stuff.

“And on a day like today, it’s going to be a shorter inning,” Kapler said after watching Doval Slider slide past Byron Buxton and show off a 101.7-mph cutter while hitting three batters. “When he’s active, he’s almost unbeatable. That’s no secret.”

Whether or not the Giants were in their game, they understand the value of a mental reset. Human performance coach Harvey Martin added field trips to his breath and mindfulness sessions with players. They began last season when Cobb and Jakob Junis took him for a little walk through the woods during a series in Colorado. Giants players have found quiet places to go forest bathing outside of Detroit and Cleveland. You strolled through the saguaros in Arizona. The last time they played a series at Dodger Stadium, they explored nature of a different kind. They drove down to Venice Beach.

“We’re in cities all the time, hotel rooms, artificial lights, sharp lines everywhere,” Cobb said. “It’s good to go out and be a part of nature.”

Martin, who played baseball at Minnesota State, knew exactly where to organize Tuesday morning’s outing. He knew someone with a house on Lake Minnetonka. A month ago there was still a layer of ice in places. But on an 80 degree day, the 50 degree water was perfect for a refreshing dip.

Doval didn’t have to jump into Lake Minnetonka to experience restful bliss. He got that boost last week when his family visited him in San Francisco for the first time. He joked that his two-year-old son, Liam, already rides horses when he’s not pitching baseball.

Is he already throwing a 101.7 mph cutter?

“Not yet, but eventually he will,” Doval said through Spanish interpreter Erwin Higueros. “If you’re careful, he throws with the same mechanics as me.”

The Bay Area-based company uses a fungus called koji as a basis for creating its meaty lineup. Don’t be grossed out — it’s the same fungus you’ve consumed in fermented products like soy sauce, miso and sake. Founders Kimberlie Le and Joshua Nixon tried a variety of fungi and fermentation methods before hitting on their winner. Then called Terramino Foods, they launched in 2017 with a popular koji-based salmon burger. Inhabitat: Why were you inspired to create Prime Roots?

Le: Growing up, I used to be a competitive snowboarder. When I would go snowboarding, I went to the same slope year after year. During college, I noticed that the snowfall accumulation was less and less each year. It was devastating to see the effects of climate change happen right before my eyes. That’s when I knew I had to do something that would make a positive impact on the planet.

Inhabitat: What does the name Prime Roots mean to you?

Le: Our star ingredient, koji, can best be described as the “roots” of mushrooms. The word “prime” is indicative of high quality. We wanted a name that represents what we do with our koji, which is to create the highest quality meat alternative meat products.

Inhabitat: How did you figure out how to turn koji into meat?

Le: I grew up making recipes with koji. My mom is a chef, so it’s something that has always been in my culinary toolkit. Koji has been around for thousands of years and is used to make miso and soy sauce. At UC Berkeley, I did a lot of research in microbiology to find ways to solve the problems our food industry faces. When I learned that about 20% of greenhouse gas emissions come from animal agriculture, I knew that there had to be a better way to create a delicious product that didn’t harm the environment. That’s when I realized that koji was something that could be used to recreate the texture and umami-rich flavor of meat, and this process also uses a lot less resources than conventional meat production.

Inhabitat: How did you develop the different flavor profiles of each meat?

Le: We really look at what goes into traditional meat and try to recreate the same delicious flavor with our products. For example, conventional Black Forest ham comes from Germany and uses juniper berries to give it that distinct taste. Of course, when we decided to make a koji Black Forest ham, we knew we had to use juniper berries. Our goal is to make sure that our products taste and feel similar to their animal-based counterparts so consumers can enjoy all the benefits with none of the guilt associated with meat. We try to honor the traditions of how meat is made. The koji used in our products is umami tasting with a neutral flavor profile, so we can easily recreate any type of meat.

Inhabitat: Where can people buy Prime Roots now, and what is your expansion plan?

Le: Bay Area consumers can currently buy our products at Berkeley Bowl East and West, Rhea’s Deli and both Bi-Rite Markets San Francisco. Our current plan is to continue to work with chefs to incorporate our product into their menus and expand our distribution throughout California and eventually nationwide.

To work hard in this industry and be recognized by one of the most prestigious food publications is a tremendous honor. Inhabitat: What else should readers know about Prime Roots?

Le: Be on the lookout for our products hitting more stores in the Bay Area. We also plan on expanding to more restaurants in the future. We make a huge impact with every bite. The process of creating our meats is 90% to 99% more efficient and less wasteful than conventional meat in terms of land use, water use, CO2 emissions, as discovered in a life-cycle assessment of our processes.

Payment processing giant Visa’s profits rose 21% in the first three months of the year fueled by a large jump in spending on the company’s namesake credit and debit card network.

The San Francisco-based company reported Tuesday that it earned $3.65 billion, or $1.70 a share, in its fiscal second quarter that ended March 31. That was up from $3.03 billion, or $1.38 a share, in the same period a year earlier.

Its earnings adjusted to exclude one-time items amounted to $1.79 a share. The results topped the expectations of analysts who were looking for Visa to earn $1.65 a share on an adjusted basis, according to FactSet.

INDIANAPOLIS — To try and acquire a veteran quarterback, the Washington Commanders have started to lay what Ron Rivera calls “the minimal groundwork.” They’ve called teams to check in on possible targets — expressing their interest and reminding them they have “potential” to get a deal done with draft picks, he says.

The problem: Rivera and Co. are still unsure which of these guys are actually available.

“We’re just waiting to hear what’s going to happen,” he says.

With two weeks until free agency begins, Rivera said Tuesday there’s “no clarity” to whether big-named quarterbacks could actually be had in the coming weeks. For months, speculation has stirred over the futures of Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Seattle’s Russell Wilson, but neither quarterback has yet to demand out of their situation. Other high-profile veterans like Las Vegas’ Derek Carr and Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins ​​are looking more likely to stay with their current teams.

So far, the market has hardly moved. San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo, perhaps the most obvious trade candidate, has yet to be dealt—and reports indicated Tuesday that the quarterback is set to undergo shoulder surgery that could keep him out until July. Colts general manager Chris Ballard, meanwhile, told reporters that the team is still undecided on starter Carson Wentz.

Now factor in the less than exciting incoming rookie quarterback draft class, the teams in need of a quarterback could end up disappointed.

“This year, there’s not much available,” Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians told ESPN.

The Buccaneers, like the Commanders, are in need of a new starter thanks to Tom Brady’s retirement. Looking at the landscape, Arians told multiple outlets he was skeptical that any of the oft-rumored quarterbacks would actually be moved. His reasoning: Why would a team be willing to move on without a clear upgrade available?

“I don’t see it,” Arians said. “As a coach, I’d be really pissed if you traded my guy.”

That type of thinking is why most expect the Seahawks to be unwilling to part with Wilson. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is 70, so what’s the incentive for him to part with a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in Wilson? And despite a down year with Wilson in 2021, Seattle would have no clear path to contend without Wilson unless it also got another top quarterback in the deal. (Wilson, too, has poured cold water on playing for the Commanders).

Situations differ by team, of course. San Francisco has Trey Lance waiting in the wings, so Garoppolo will likely be moved. And on Tuesday, Ballard sounded more than ready to move on from Wentz — offering no commitment the starter would be back next season. “Ultimately, we will make the decision that we think is best, both in the short and the long-term,” Ballard said.

But if the Colts do decide to part with Wentz, Indianapolis will still have to find a replacement — making them another team in the hunt for a new quarterback.

Rivera said if the Commanders have to settle for an option that isn’t as splashy — he said he remained comfortable with the idea of ​​playing a rookie quarterback if need be — he said he thinks Washington would still be in a position to succeed with a mid-tier level quarterback.

“Oh I believe you can,” Rivera said. “I believe you can win. A quarterback of that caliber, it helps you. … Whichever route we take, just know that we are going to fortify the other parts (of the roster).”

As for the potential cost of what it would take to land a quarterback, Rivera’s tone was markedly different from a year ago. Whereas last year Rivera stressed the need to protect future draft capital and hang on to core players, this year he said: “Whatever you pay, that’s what you think the value is.”

A year ago, Washington offered only a first-round and a third-round pick for Detroit’s Matthew Stafford. The Rams swooped in instead, landing Stafford for two first-rounders, a third and quarterback Jared Goff. The move paved the way for the Rams to win last month’s Super Bowl.

The Stafford package doesn’t have much of an impact on negotiations this time around, Rivera said.

“Does anybody really care what was traded for Matthew Stafford last year?” Rivera said. “No.”
