ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Despite the loss of two major offshore wind farm projects when Danish developer Orsted pulled out of New Jersey, the state is moving forward with its plans to support and grow the nascent industry.

The state Board of Public Utilities on Friday voted to seek bids for a transmission facility into which several offshore wind projects can plug, an important part of getting the power from ocean-based wind turbines into the onshore electrical grid.

But on a more elemental level, Friday’s vote represented a vote of confidence in offshore wind from a state that wants to be the East Coast leader in the industry.

“Recent setbacks will not prevent us from moving forward with our commitment to offshore wind,” said Christine Guhl-Sadovy, the board’s president. “Offshore wind is and continues to be the economic development opportunity of a generation, and remains a key tool in climate change mitigation.”

Article continues below this ad

The board authorized a solicitation of proposals for an energy transmission system. That system would be “an open-access transmission facility, located either in the Atlantic Ocean or onshore, used to facilitate the collection of offshore wind energy or its delivery to the electric transmission system in this state,” according to a 2019 law.

It would include concrete structures and empty pipes through which power cables would pass. They would be installed in a single construction effort, capable of servicing multiple offshore wind farms.

James Ferris, the deputy director of the board’s clean energy division, said that installing the project all at once “would minimize environmental and community impacts by resulting in a single shore crossing.”

Those eligible to apply include power transmission developers and owners, and offshore wind developers, Ferris said.

Article continues below this ad

The board vote came nearly three weeks after Orsted, the world’s largest offshore wind developer, scrapped its Ocean Wind I and II projects off the coast of New Jersey. The company cited inflation, supply chain problems and a failure to secure as much government financial subsidies as it wanted as reasons the projects were no longer feasible.

That sent shock waves through the offshore wind industry. It also heartened its opponents, who said Orsted’s decision to walk away from New Jersey and write off $4 billion in losses, mostly due to the cancellations, shows the industry is inherently unprofitable without massive government subsidies.

Shortly after Orsted scraped its projects, numerous community groups celebrated, and promised to oppose other pending wind farms, including one by Atlantic Shores, a project by EDF/Shell.

“The communities of southern New Jersey are surely celebrating the end of the project,” said Joseph Mancini, mayor of Long Beach Township. “New Jersey can harness sustainable energy solutions more effectively without succumbing to the industrialization of the ocean. There are smarter, more considerate avenues to explore that protect our state’s interests and national natural treasures.”

Article continues below this ad

As the vote was happening, the Southern New Jersey Development Council, a business group, reaffirmed its support for offshore wind projects, calling them “a shining example of responsible environmental stewardship and economic revitalization.”

“Yes, Orsted’s cancellation of the Ocean Wind I and Ocean Wind II projects was a setback, but New Jersey’s continued commitment to offshore wind power is a beacon of hope for a future where renewable energy takes center stage in our fight against climate change, said Marlene Asselta, the group’s president.

Proposals are due by April 3.

BRICK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey is pushing an ambitious agenda to move its more than 9 million residents away from natural gas and gasoline to heat their homes and power their cars, in favor of electricity to do the job of both.

But like many other places in the country, the moves, designed to lessen the harmful impact of burning fossil fuels on the planet’s climate, are garnering significant opposition from foes who warn that the government is coming to take away your stove and your car.

New Jersey utility regulators on Wednesday approved a series of “decarbonization” measures designed to incentivize buildings to switch from natural gas heat to electric. Participation in the programs is strictly voluntary, according to the chairman of the state Board of Public Utilities, who lashed out against “misinformation and lies” being circulated by opponents.

Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy has said he wants only “zero-emissions” vehicles to be available in the state by 2035.

Taken together, they represent aggressive steps to move away from fossil fuel use.

“We build upon our nation-leading record of bold climate action while delivering on our promise to utilize every tool at our disposal to combat the intensifying climate crisis,” Murphy said earlier this month in announcing the requirement that manufacturers ramp up their production of electric vehicles, reaching 100% by 2035.

“No one is coming for anyone’s gas stove,” the governor said. “No one is walking into anyone’s kitchen. No one is going to be forced to do anything, in any way.”

But to opponents, the moves represent serious and costly government overreach, which will inevitably need to be enforced by bans.

“New Jerseyans are learning that the ultimate goal of ‘building decarbonization’ and Gov. Murphy’s extreme green energy plan is the elimination of affordable natural gas and the extremely costly replacement of gas stoves, furnaces, and hot water heaters,” said Republican state Sen. Anthony Bucco. “They’re realizing there’s no way to fully electrify the entire state without bans, mandates, expensive conversions, and higher energy bills.”

The programs approved Wednesday by the Board of Public Utilities include goals and targets for buildings to install heat pumps instead of natural gas cooling and heating equipment.

These devices move heat between the air inside a home and the air outside a home, while ground source heat pumps transfer heat between the air inside a home and the ground outside a home. Low-income households would qualify for financial assistance to purchase and install them.

“Without a doubt, this will kick-start to the next generation of energy efficiency in New Jersey,” said the board’s chairman, Joseph Fiordaliso. “We are encouraging folks to move to energy efficiency. Notice I said ‘encouraging.’ We are not requiring. We are not mandating anyone to give up their gas stove. I cannot emphasize more that we are not mandating anything. So, enough of the misinformation out there.”

Decarbonization of buildings is a critical component in New Jersey’s energy master plan and is the focus of an executive order by the governor to install zero-carbon-emission space heating and cooling systems in 400,000 homes and 20,000 commercial properties, and make 10% of all low-to-moderate income properties electrification-ready by 2030.

It’s already happening in places like Berkeley, California, which in 2019 voted to ban natural gas connections in all new construction. San Francisco and New York City soon followed.

But other places, particularly those with Republican-led governments, are resisting. As of June, 24 states have adopted laws prohibiting natural gas bans. They call the laws “pre-emption” measures.

New Jersey’s business community is concerned with the cost of Murphy’s proposals, which some opponents have put at more than $1 trillion.

“While we should all work to reduce carbon emissions, the ban of gas-powered cars in such an expedited time frame does not take costs or feasibility into account, and it is likely to result in a major increase in New Jersey residents who actually won’t be able to afford to drive,” said Ray Cantor, an official with the New Jersey Business And Industry Association.

“The governor’s plan will make new cars virtually unaffordable for working and middle-class consumers and will severely limit vehicle consumer choice,” added Jim Appleton, president of the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers.

But the state’s environmental community strongly supports the switches.

“Building electrification is environmental protection from the inside out,” said Anjuli Ramos-Busot, state director of the Sierra Club. “Modern electric technologies are crucial to making our communities more resilient to extreme weather and are far more efficient than fossil-fuel alternatives. Our clean energy transition not only happens out there on our grids, but also right here in our homes and shared spaces so that we can all breathe easier while taking action to reduce harmful climate pollutants.”

New Jersey utility regulators are to vote Wednesday on a series of “decarbonization” measures designed to incentivize buildings to switch from natural gas heat to electric.

Anthony Bucco. “They’re realizing there’s no way to fully electrify the entire state without bans, mandates, expensive conversions, and higher energy bills.”

While Murphy said the electric vehicle rules do not impose any obligations onto consumers or car dealerships, Brad Schnure, a spokesman for Senate Republicans, said there is no way New Jersey can reach the governor’s stated climate goals without mandates.

A spokesman for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities said the agency will not comment until after it votes on proposed decarbonization measures on Wednesday. Those steps include goals and targets for buildings to install heat pumps instead of natural gas cooling and heating equipment.

These devices move heat between the air inside a home and the air outside a home, while ground source heat pumps transfer heat between the air inside a home and the ground outside a home. Low-income households would qualify for financial assistance to purchase and install them.

Doug O’Malley, director of Environment New Jersey, called the BPU proposals “a necessary step toward reducing emissions from our buildings, the second-highest polluting sector in the state, while delivering clean air and healthier homes.”

Throughout the pandemic, Carbon Health has been at the forefront of patient care, partnering with cities across the country on public testing initiatives, including conducting more than 2.1 million COVID-19 tests and nearly 1.5 million vaccines. During December 2021 and January 2022, Carbon Health conducted nearly 4,000 tests per day and provided vital COVID-19 care at 100 clinics and through virtual appointments nationwide. For patients who test positive, Carbon Health offers its proprietary COVID Positive Care program, which provides access to comprehensive emergency and virtual care assessment, state-of-the-art clinical protocols, symptom trackers, device monitoring, and therapeutic modalities including symptom management and monoclonal antibody therapy.

Carbon Health works closely with public partners such as Montgomery Township and Plainsboro Township, New Jersey, and the City of South San Francisco, California to understand their unique needs to create a rapid and community-focused pandemic response. During the recent COVID-19 omicron surge, New Jersey communities have struggled to obtain rapid home tests by going to overcrowded emergency clinics and emergency rooms or receiving delayed PCR test results.

“Due to the incredible post-holiday demand for COVID-19 testing, we were looking for a reliable partner to host COVID-19 testing clinics, and Carbon Health more than delivered,” said Devangi Patel, health officer for Montgomery Township Health Department. Carbon Health was able to mobilize its resources at short notice and expand its capacity to run clinics in a matter of days. They took the time to understand our agency and our needs, and helped us provide a much-needed resource to our community around town.”

“We are at a critical juncture in the fight against the pandemic where the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly and is highly transmissible,” said Dr. Chirag Patel, Regional Clinical Director at Carbon Health. “At our nine clinics in central New Jersey, 30% of COVID-19 tests are currently positive, up from 8% in early December. Each test helps our community make more informed decisions to get kids back to school, keep businesses running, and end the surge.”

“Carbon Health is uniquely positioned to help with our expertise and experience across a variety of areas, including rapidly mobilizing healthcare teams to set up large-scale testing sites, partnering with local community governments, and our ability to flexibly scale down and scale up at these Efforts to succeed are based on local needs,” said Nita Sommers, Chief Growth Officer at Carbon Health.

Bad boys don’t cry.

Nicolas Dromard learned that. He is the Ontario-born actor who plays vintage heel Tommy DeVito in the Jersey Boys production that kicks off this week in Toronto.

“Of course it’s nice to be the good guy and have the people cheering you on, but that shudder that you get when you know they’re really looking for you is even better,” Dromard said on the phone from Boise , Idaho, where the show takes place on tour,

DeVito is the worm in the apple in the saga of how Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons became world famous and his gambling addiction finally broke the group apart.

“Yes, he’s a real eye-catcher,” laughs Dromard, “but it can be a lot more fun to play.”

Dromard knows because he saw “now both sides” in the words of Joni Mitchell.

The last time he appeared on a stage in Toronto, he played Bert, the lovable chimney sweep in Mary Poppins.

“It’s really great to play a guy like Tommy who is different from Bert in every way,” he says.

Dromard is only 34, but has had a professional music theater career for 15 years that one could envy.

It started when he was 18 years old singing for the Radio City Christmas spectacle in Branson, Missouri.

“I heard they were looking for young dancers for the West Side Story in Stratford and I thought, ‘Man, this gig just needs to get better.’ ”

So he crashed the auditions and impressed director Kelly Robinson and choreographer Sergio Trujillo so much that they cast him as a big deal.

● Alan Cummings lives a cabaret with tragic roots

● The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the best of the Trilogy: Review

Dromard joined the famous Toronto company Mamma Mia! shortly thereafter and toured North America with it. Then he went straight to Broadway and made his New York debut with the Trevor Nunns Oklahoma Choir! He then became part of the ensemble of The Boy From Oz, in which Hugh Jackman slapped his bottom every night during the curtain as part of the choreography.

Dromard returned to Toronto shortly to be part of the Hairspray cast here, but it was time for him to leave the choir and he did so on a grand scale, starring the young romantic lead Fiyero in Wicked, both in the San Francisco Company as well as on tour.

But it was in Mary Poppins that he really caught the lightning bolt in a bottle, bewitched everyone, and actually danced upside down around the proscenium arch.

And now it’s Jersey Boys and another challenging lead on a hit show.

“There is no secret (to success),” says Dromard. “It’s a combination of many things. I was in the right place at the right time, I work hard and I train hard. Yes, and I think luck has a little to do with it. “

He won’t choose a favorite role because, as he says: “To be honest, I ask myself with every new experience in my career: ‘Could it get any better?’ and the answer is always: ‘No way!’

“And then the next big thing comes and proves I was wrong.”

If Dromard’s success has a downside, it’s that he spends so much time on the streets, living from hotel room to hotel room, but with Jersey Boys he’s found a way to break that monotony.

“The four of us try to rent a house together whenever possible. You can cook and do laundry and have buds to be with after every show. “

On the show, DeVito is raked over the coals for being the worst roommate, leaving wet towels on the floor and using up all of the soap. Is Dromard guilty of the same weaknesses?

“Under no circumstance!” he says emphatically. “I am very clean and tidy. I leave my character on stage. “

And he will soon be saying goodbye to this character.

“I’m saying goodbye to the tour on January 25th and moving back to New York. I’ve turned down any other work on the street for a while. I’m satisfied with not being on the road for a long, long time.

“I would like to be available to develop new shows in workshops. This is my next big dream: developing a role on Broadway.
