ONE tiny home community is allowing residents to find permanent housing by living in an unusual piece of equipment.

As Americans look to lower their monthly spending, tiny homes have surged in popularity.

The tiny home village serves the homeless population in Santa BarbaraCredit: DignityMoves

Many tiny home fans have formed groups and created their own communities as well, where rent is cheap and the sky’s the limit on their custom built tiny home designs.

However, one community, DignityMoves, opened as a zero-rent prefab tiny home village in Santa Barbara, California last year.

It was designed to house homeless residents in the city, and just a year out, more than half of its residents have been able to find a permanent home.

The community originally housed 66 people, but 36 are in their own living spaces today.

Read more about tiny homes

However, the space’s building blocks are a bit unorthodox – all units were completely built from shipping containers.

The village rests in a former parking lot surrounded by palm trees and a mountain view.

The entire group of homes cost $1.7million to build last year after Santa Barbara County provided $700,000 to finance it.

SIMPLE LIFE

The project’s tiny homes were constructed by Boss Tiny House for simple but aesthetic living.

Each home includes a bed, window and desk alongside an air conditioner and heater.

Across the tiny home community, residents have access to case workers, a dining hall, computer lab and gardens.

This is in addition to Dignity Moves’ laundry, bathroom and shower units.

Each private space has a lock too, ensuring that residents will get privacy in the comfort of their own home.

“We take for granted what it feels like to be able to be alone,” Elizabeth Funk, the founder and CEO of Dignity Moves, told Insider.

All in all, there are roughly 3,500 homeless people living in Santa Barbara county, but last year, 66 got to live in the new village.

Funk said over the past year, she’s seen “shocking transformations” in the residents.

There are other Dignity Moves communities set up in Sonoma County and San Francisco, but there could soon be plenty more to come.

Regarding the Santa Barbara location, Funk hopes to add in an additional 400 beds, but it’s unclear when this could be possible.

MORE TINY HOME COMMUNITIES

Other tiny home communities are increasingly popping up across the United States.

In Kennewick, Washington, a village called Lilac Homes is open to people in need.

The 16 houses shelter those who are most at risk in the community.

“We are going to be able to house individuals who we have targeted,” Lona Hammer, a representative of the housing authority, said.

“That includes homeless veterans, homeless people with disabilities, and homeless families with children.”

Meanwhile, in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, Raven Village has 22 units on the market.

Residents have access to a community kitchen, bathrooms, showers, and a laundry facility on set, as well as staff offices and a garden.

TINY HOME ADVICE

If you would like to live in a tiny home on your own, you’ll need to be in charge of finding and building your unit.

The most common type of unit tends to be either a shed or an RV, and both have pros and cons.

While RVs give you the flexibility of traveling wherever you’d like, some town ordinances require you to only be parked in certain spaces for a short period of time.

Sheds also require you to know your state and county’s zoning laws, as you typically can’t just live in a shed on someone else’s home property.

Keep in mind, you’ll also be responsible for adding all the required plumbing and electrical services.

You also need to ensure you have a space to put your tiny home.

This means you’ll likely need to search for land to rent.

Spaces are routinely put up for auction on sites like Facebook Marketplace, or you can apply for land in an established tiny home community.

One tiny home guru purchased a mini house for $20,000, and their space saving techniques allow them to have an extra room.

Meanwhile, a family of four is able to live in a neighborhood full of $800,000 homes due to their tiny house priced at just $100,000.

A home in Visalia, California with a striking red brick exterior is on the market for $639,000, and its interiors will transport you to the “era of Gatsby,” according to the listing.

The exterior of the house.Lynn studied photography

The 3,400-square-foot home — also known as Laurelwood — was built in 1931, according to the listing.

In the ’60s, a prominent local businessman named Don Douglas bought the home and expanded the property’s footprint with architectural salvage from around the world, listing agent Ruben Olguin told Insider. Olguin holds the listing with his Melson Realty colleague Chris Jolly.

“It was originally just a Tudor style house – built on the same half acre it now stands on – but when Don Douglas bought it he decided he wanted a Victorian mansion,” Olguin said. “He’s been building it for 30 years, and it’s grown from 1,400 square feet to 3,400 square feet.”

Douglas lived in the home for over four decades, from 1960 until his death in 2003, Olguin added.

Each space Douglas added was designed around a single object — like the spiral staircase and fireman’s pole he bought at auction in London, Olguin said.

The spiral staircase and a fireman’s pole.Lynn studied photography

The property has changed hands several times since Douglas’ death.

When Douglas died, another family bought it with the intention of turning it into a wedding venue, Olguin said.

“They could never get the deviation from the city to turn it into a wedding venue because it’s in the middle of an apartment block.

Another family then bought it when it was a foreclosure property and used it to house all their antiques, Olguin said.

One of the living areas in the house.Lynn studied photography

“They never really lived in it. They just held parties and gatherings there,” Olguin said.

The story goes on

That family then sold the house to Olguin and another investor a few years ago, Olguin said. The two bought it in January 2021 for $525,000 per listing.

Olguin resold the property months later in August 2021 but eventually got the home back when the buyer defaulted on payment according to the listing documents.

“We sold it on our own, so we took over the financing. But then the buyer basically defaulted on it, and we got it back through foreclosure,” he added.

Although updates have been made to modernize the house, many of the furnishings are original to Douglas’ time.

The kitchen has an intricately carved stove.Lynn studied photography

“We restored it and brought it up to where it is today,” Olguin said. We changed a lot of the electrical, a lot of the plumbing and the floors and we brought it all back to life.

Olguin listed the property in August 2022 for $749,900, listing documents show. It has traded at $639,000 since January.

Homes in Visalia have an average listing price of $375,000, according to data from real estate platform Realtor.com. There are currently 389 single family homes for sale in the area ranging in price from $107,000 to $2 million.

Laurelwood is in the mid-range at $639,000.

Olguin describes the interior of the house as “eclectic Victorian”, although he says it contains a mixture of other architectural styles.

The sunken conversation pit in the living room.Lynn learned photography

“Don Douglas built it for himself based on his wishes. So there’s Victorian, French Normandy, early American, and there’s also Gothic,” Olguin said.

Douglas was also a big fan of Disney and Playboy, and there are touches inspired by both in the house, Olguin said.

“Out on the front is a large dome designed after buildings on Main Street Disney. The exterior of the house was also made out of brick, and it’s very similar to the Haunted Mansion ride,” he said.

The conversation pit in one of the common areas of the home is also inspired by the Playboy mansion, he added.

Douglas loved to entertain and frequently had guests at his home, Olguin said.

The second floor used to be the master bedroom, but the space has since been converted into a playroom.Lynn learned photography

“He loved people and would allow any school or anyone who had married to come and take pictures in his garden,” Olguin said.

Douglas used to have photo albums with pictures of people coming up to him for photoshoots, Olguin said.

“He would never blame anyone, but he would ask for a copy of one of the pictures they took,” Olguin added. “So he had stacks of photo albums with these high school pics, prom pics, wedding pics and graduation pics, all taken in the yard of the house.”

Almost all of the items in the house are antiques that Douglas collected and renovated for use in his home.

A breakfast nook made from old church pews.Lynn studied photography.

The seats in the breakfast nook are refurbished pews, while the kitchen range was originally an 1880s saloon range modified with a gas hob, Olguin said.

The property has three bedrooms and four bathrooms.

One of the bedrooms in the house.Lynn learned photography

Olguin met Douglas and his son after moving to Visalia around 30 years ago.

“I bought a house about a block from this property and I’ve always been intrigued by it because it’s such a beautiful place,” Olguin said.

A few years later, Olguin started working at the same real estate company as Douglas’ son.

“I got to know his son really well and we’re still friends. And so he used to tell me all the crazy stories about this house,” he said. “When the opportunity to buy it came up, I spoke to my investors and just felt like we couldn’t pass it up.”

An ideal buyer would be someone with an interest in antiques or someone planning to convert it into an Airbnb, Olguin said.

One of the bathrooms in the house.Lynn learned photography

The house is almost equidistant from Los Angeles and San Francisco; According to Google Maps, it takes about three hours to get to Los Angeles and a little under four hours to San Francisco.

The property is also about 36 miles from Sequoia National Park, known for its giant sequoias – the tallest trees in the world.

No additional permits are required to convert the space into a short-term rental, Olguin said.

“It is probably the most famous house in Visalia. People come by and just ask for it – I feel like I’ve been a tour guide for this house for the past three years,” he added.

When Taco Bell removed the “Grilled Stuft Nacho” from its nationwide menu in 2015, Chris Sandberg was crushed.

The specialty item – a triangle-shaped tortilla filled with beef, crunchy red strips, sour cream and cheesy jalapeño sauce – was “the best thing I ever had at Taco Bell,” Sandberg said.

The day he discovered the dish, he liked it so much, “I had it every day for a week,” Sandberg said. “The following week, it was discontinued.”

After it was taken from the menu, he moved on and tried other items, but none measured up for him. It stayed fresh in his mind. And on Jan. 4, 2021, he decided to start a daily exercise challenge on TikTok, in the hope of getting Taco Bell’s attention.

Sandberg shared a video of himself, breathless in his bathroom mirror, saying, “Day one of exercising every day until Taco Bell brings back the Grilled Stuft Nacho.”

The seven-second clip went viral with hundreds of thousands of views. Sandberg doubled down on his unusual – and somewhat illogical – effort to apply pressure to the restaurant chain through physical activity. He posted another mid-workout video the following day, and every single day thereafter. In the roughly 470 days since he started chronicling his daily exercise routine on TikTok, Sandberg has shed more than 85 pounds.

“I’ve put in an unbelievable amount of physical work,” said Sandberg, who lives in San Francisco, is self-employed, and produces social media videos and short films. He emphasized that he does not work for Taco Bell and never has.

The goal of his workout antic is twofold: While his primary objective is to bring back his beloved Grilled Stuft Nacho, when he began his Taco Bell challenge more than one year ago, Sandberg – who weighed close to 300 pounds before the pandemic – what also seeking to lose weight. He decided to merge the two missions.

“I do understand the irony in exercising every day for a fast-food item,” he said. “It started as a joke that has clearly gone way too far, but I can’t stop now.”

Although Sandberg initially executed the idea in jest, he quickly realized “it resonates for people,” as losing weight can be a stressful struggle for many. He wanted to find a way to make his experience lighthearted.

Sandberg grew eager to get in shape after “I read that people who were overweight were more vulnerable to COVID, so that had been at the back of my head for a while,” he said, adding that he was 275 pounds when he started the exercise challenge, after losing 15 pounds over the preceding few months.

Sandberg thought that publicly sharing his weight-loss journey on social media might help hold him accountable while also potentially motivating others. He wanted something to set himself apart, a cause that might be comical enough to compel Internet strangers to cheer him on.

“I didn’t want the journey to be about a number on a scale,” Sandberg said. “I wanted it to be fun. I wanted the goal to be something that had nothing to do with my weight.”

Enter the Grilled Tier Nacho.

“Everyone loves Taco Bell,” Sandberg said in a bold culinary statement. “That’s just what came to me.”

Plus, he believed his efforts might actually work.

“Doja Cat wanted them to bring back the Mexican Pizza, and look what happened,” Sandberg said. “The Grilled Stuft Nacho is better than the Mexican Pizza, and the world needs to know that.”

According to the Taco Bell Fandom Wiki, the Grilled Stuft Nacho first appeared on the menu in 2013 but was discontinued in March 2014. It made a brief reappearance in 2015 before it was pulled for good. Some people were peeved, though probably no one as much as Sandberg.

“There is a common belief that everything at Taco Bell tastes the same, but the Grilled Stuft Nacho is the exception,” Sandberg said, explaining his appreciation for a specific sauce.

“I want to make this clear,” he said. “The cheesy jalapeño sauce is different than their creamy jalapeño sauce. Without the cheesy jalapeño sauce, it is just not the same.”

Sandberg found an online community that shared his taste in fast food. Someone started an online petition four years ago pleading with the chain to bring back the specialty item. The petition collected 792 signatures – including Sandberg’s. The appeal was not enough to revive the dish, so Sandberg decided to take matters into his own hands.

First, he began with at-home workouts, then incorporated weightlifting, high-intensity interval training and long-distance running into his regular fitness routine.

“There are days that you want to give up,” Sandberg said. “On the days that you do want to work out, that’s when you push yourself physically, but on the days that you don’t want to work out, that’s when you have to push yourself mentally.”
