The New York Yankees have long been recognized for their formidable bullpen, a force to be reckoned with in the MLB. One name that emerged strongly from their 2022 roster was the adept lefty, Wandy Peralta. Under the guidance of pitching coach Matt Blake, Peralta showcased impressive value. But as the 2023 season progresses, it appears that the 32-year-old’s role within the Yankees has been slightly redefined.

In the preceding season, Peralta delivered a commendable 56.1 innings. Fast forward to this year, and he’s clocked in 54 innings, predominantly in less critical situations. His statistics still impress, with a 2.83 ERA, 8.50 strikeouts per nine, and a solid 85.2% left-on-base rate. Notably, he’s recorded a 57.4% ground ball rate, but there’s also been a spike in his walk rate – a high of 5.00 per nine innings, the most since 2018.

Rising Stars: Ian Hamilton’s Dominance

While Peralta has been a reliable force, the Yankees have discovered some new gems. Take, for instance, Ian Hamilton. At 28, this pitcher has caught attention and is under the Yankees’ purview until he becomes eligible for free agency in 2029. With an impressive 2.65 ERA across 37 appearances this year, leaning more toward Hamilton seems to be the evolving game plan for the Yankees.

Peralta’s Future with the Yankees

Financial considerations also come into play. Peralta, who bagged $3.35 million this year, is on the brink of free agency as the off-season approaches. Recent comments from manager Aaron Boone hint at some “triceps stuff,” sparking speculations that Peralta might see less action in the upcoming week.

As the season finale beckons, signs indicate that Peralta might not be a prominent figure in the Yankees’ blueprint for the future. The shift is palpable – the Yankees appear to be angling towards younger, more budget-friendly bullpen investments as they forge ahead.

However, it’s essential to underscore Peralta’s significant contributions since he joined from the San Francisco Giants in 2021. His consistency in keeping his ERA below 2.95 while adorned in the iconic pinstripes speaks volumes about his caliber and the value he brought to the team.

By now you know the story. After he faced more than 20 allegations of sexual misconduct, the Cleveland Browns sold their franchise’s soul to go all-in on the disgraced Deshaun Watson last spring. For a fleeting moment, you thought it might even work out for Watson in Cleveland, as his situation made a mockery of the NFL’s disciplinary system.

Eight games into his Browns career, Watson looks like a shell of the player Cleveland was willing to set aside all of its principles for. After a catastrophic knee injury for Nick Chubb Monday night, it’s about to get a lot worse before it (ever) gets better.

Given the severe nature of Chubb’s injury, he will officially miss the rest of the regular season. His absence will leave a Grand Canyon-sized chasm of offense in Cleveland’s backfield. You don’t just replace players like Chubb, who has rushed for at least 100 yards in 30 of 77 career games. Losing a player like Chubb means reorganizing your entire offense on the fly. He is a vintage backfield bell-cow of the highest order — a player that teams like the Browns build their entire schemes around.

To state the obvious: This is a problem for both the Browns and for Watson’s attempt at the NFL’s least-coveted “redemption” arc.

Without Chubb to lean on, the Browns will now ask Watson to carry the brunt of their offensive load. This is the same Watson who has amassed one of the worst cumulative expected points added (EPA) and completion percentages over expected (CPOE) since taking his first snap with the Browns. There’s an argument to be made that he’s the NFL’s worst starting quarterback right now, and it isn’t even close. What good is having Amari Cooper and David Njoku as pass targets if they can’t get the ball?

This is also the same Watson who gifted the hated Pittsburgh Steelers not one but two “gimme” defensive touchdowns in arguably the biggest professional football game for Cleveland in the 21st century. Instead of helping put the Browns back on the AFC’s map, Watson did his best 2018 Carson Wentz impression (packaged with the inexplicable yips and all). And he wasted no time doing it:

.@STEELERS PICK-6 ON THE FIRST PLAY

: #CLEvsPIT on ABC
: Stream on #NFLPlus https://t.co/zWM8hlwLFw pic.twitter.com/qrdHkRoZHK

— NFL (@NFL) September 19, 2023

Then, in an embarrassing attempt to salt away a crucial road victory over a divisional opponent, Watson spontaneously combusted in the waning moments of a 26-22 defeat that had his fingerprints all over it:

ANOTHER HIGHSMITH AND WATT COMBO. TOUCHDOWN STEELERS.

: #CLEvsPIT on ABC
: Stream on #NFLPlus https://t.co/zWM8hlwLFw pic.twitter.com/3T15PdcCSI

— NFL (@NFL) September 19, 2023

After their brazen display of prioritizing winning football games above all else, the Browns now face a worst-case scenario.

Without Chubb, they no longer have easy offense to lean on. Running backs who average more than five yards per carry over half a decade don’t grow on trees. Watson will be their default life preserver — a reality the Browns once had to feel confident about before his game lost every aspect of its electricity. There’s no snap, no charge to his atrocious Browns’ passing offense, which is 26th in total yards through two games and somehow only has a higher yards-per-pass-attempt than rookie Bryce Young’s Panthers and the Bengals’ Joe Burrow on precisely one healthy calf. There’s bleak and grim and hopeless in this silly sport. Then there’s Watson plumbing the depths of atrocious quarterback play after receiving nearly a quarter-billion dollars in guaranteed money.

In the next two months, Watson’s fledgling Browns will square off with Mike Vrabel’s scrappy Tennessee Titans, two bona fide Super Bowl contenders in the Baltimore Ravens (twice!) and San Francisco 49ers, an upstart Indianapolis Colts squad led by the promising Anthony Richardson, and Pete Carroll’s rising Seahawks in Seattle all before the Steelers visit Cleveland in mid-November to flatten Watson like a pancake (again). There is a very feasible reality where Cleveland has just two or three wins by December. That is decidedly not how the Browns thought their Watson era would unfold.

Nothing Watson has “achieved” with the Browns suggests he’s prepared to elevate them in this impossible moment. He is somehow less of a (positive) difference-maker than noted franchise talents like Zach Wilson and Justin Fields. But the New York Jets and Chicago Bears aren’t nearly as invested in their current quarterbacks’ respective futures as the Browns are with Watson. Everything says Watson is about to recklessly drive them off a cliff like best friends Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis taking an impromptu road trip. Except this tale will not contain any of the wacky hijinks of a beloved cinematic classic.

The worst part for the Browns is that they have no eject button. They traded three first-round picks for a quarterback with a $63.9 million salary cap hit in each of the next three seasons. That is not a typo. Watson’s contract will indeed carry more weight on the Browns’ books than Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Justin Herbert for each of their teams well into the 2020s. Barring some gold-medal-winning financial gymnastics, Cleveland is effectively locked into an extended future of expensive and horrendous quarterback play at the same time. While the Browns are probably accustomed to the latter outcome, years of incompetence under center couldn’t have possibly prepared them for Watson wasting their time and money.

It took all of eight starts for the Watson trade to blow up in the Browns’ face. Their humiliation is likely only just beginning.

The San Francisco 49ers might have a problem on their hands. Kickers are a rather underrated part of a team’s success. When an offense stalls out near the end-zone, having a reliable kicker from over 40 yards is a godsend. It allows teams to still score even if the offense stalls out. With that in mind, the 49ers might be without their kicker, Zane Gonzales, for some time.

During their final preseason game, 49ers kicker Zane Gonzales exited the game with an injury, per Around the NFL. Gonzales never returned to the game, giving a problem for San Francisco. Kicker Jake Moody was also out of the game due to a right quad strain.

For the inside story on the 7 players banned from the NFL, listen below:

“49ers kicker Zane Gonzalez injured his calf Friday night against the Chargers and is out for the remainder of the game. San Francisco has no other kickers suited up as Jake Moody is dealing with a quad injury and not playing.”

This might be a problem for the 49ers moving forward. Gonzales and Moody (the presumed starter) are the only two kickers listed on the roster. If both players’ injuries prove to be lengthy, San Francisco will need to scramble to find a new kicker. That will be tough, considering they already had to replace their ol’ reliable kicker (Robbie Gould) for Gonzales and Moody.

The 49ers are in the midst of a new era. After trading away Trey Lance to the Cowboys, the team is moving forward with Brock Purdy under center. If the team wants to support Purdy properly in his first full season as a starter, they’ll need to figure out a way to fix their kicker conundrum.

Sunday’s MLB action started with a bang when Pete Alonso made a surprise return to the Mets lineup about two weeks early after suffering a wrist injury. That was the injury headliner of the day, but there’s still a lot more to come after 15 games.

MLB Injury Report: Monday, June 19

Pete Alonso (wrist), New York Mets — Well, that was quick. When Alonso was brought to the IL last week with a bruised bone and a sprained wrist, he was expected to be out for at least three weeks. But just 11 days later, the first baseman was back in the Mets’ lineup as of Sunday afternoon. He went 0-4 with three strikeouts, so there’s clearly some rust, but Alonso seems good enough to swing the racquet normally:

Julio Urias (thigh)/Daniel Hudson (knee), Los Angeles Dodgers – Finally, some good news for the Dodgers’ pitching team, who have been struggling lately, particularly during this weekend’s win over the San Francisco Giants. Urias, who has been out since last month with a thigh strain, and Hudson, who has not played at all this year while in rehab after knee surgery, are expected to rejoin the team before the end of the month:

Evan Phillips probably holds the most leverage spots, but given how much manager Dave Roberts loves to shuffle and combine based on matchups, Hudson should still have a lot of work to do in the ninth inning.

Sean Murphy (hamstring), Atlanta Braves – As expected, Murphy was absent from Sunday’s squad after leaving Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury, but there was good news nonetheless: an MRI showed only an irritation and no actual strain. The backstop may need a few more days off, but the team is hoping, at least for now, that it won’t need to be deployed to the IL.

Casey Schmitt (forearm)/Alex Cobb (oblique), San Francisco Giants – It was a bad day for batters, who were plunked when Schmitt took a pitch off his arm at Dodger Stadium. The rookie was forced to leave the game but it appears that was just a precaution – his x-rays were negative and he should be back in the line-up soon.

Cobb, meanwhile, was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. While we’ve watched this type of injury ambush pitchers for several weeks, the Giants don’t seem overly concerned. Manager Gabe Kapler told reporters the righty felt some tightness throwing a bullpen over the weekend, which the team wanted to do to ensure he had more time to get things right. It’s possible that Cobb just missed a start or two.

Ian Hamilton (groin)/Nestor Cortes (rotator cuff), New York Yankees – Not much was going well for the Yankees this weekend in Boston, but at least there was some movement on the injury front. Hamilton, who had emerged as a key midfielder, scored twice in a clean inning in his first rehab appearance at Double-A Somerset. The right-winger later told reporters he expects to need at least two more sorties but could be ready by next weekend.

As for Cortes, he’s throwing for the first time since he was sidelined with a rotator cuff tear earlier this month:

There’s still a long way to go for the left-hander — he probably won’t return to the New York rotation before the All-Star break — but it’s a start.

Tanner Houck (face), Boston Red Sox – The Red Sox issued an update on Houck a day after the right-hander was hit in the face by a line drive.

Houck did suffer some sort of facial fracture — and not just the contusion he was originally diagnosed with — and was placed on the injured list, but all things considered, the outcome could have been a lot worse. Thankfully, it looks like the right will be fine, although there’s no timeline for his return to the mound just yet. The team hasn’t revealed who might fill Houck’s place in the rotation; Nick Pivetta and Corey Kluber would be obvious candidates.

jonathan india, Cincinnati Reds – India equalized early in the eighth inning with a home run on backfield, but were forced out of the game two innings later after being knocked out by a double play. Good news for Cincy: The Reds clinched the win in their 10th game for the eighth consecutive year and their second baseman appears to be doing well.

Lars Nootbaar (back), St Louis Cardinals — We’d say Nootbaar seems ready to return to St. Louis:

Reports surfaced early Sunday afternoon that the outfielder — who started a rehab stint at Triple-A Memphis this week — could leave the IL as early as Monday, and he responded by hitting a home run a few hours later. The team won’t make a decision until they see how his sore back is reacting, but it certainly sounds like he’ll be back in the next few days.

Alejandro Kirk (Hand), Toronto Blue Jays — Kirk was another pitch hit victim on Sunday. Toronto’s loss to the Texas Rangers left hand lacerated and bruised. X-rays were thankfully negative, but it remains to be seen how long it will be before the backing can swing a racquet comfortably again. Danny Jansen has had the most starts behind the plate lately anyway.

Miguel Amaya (Wrist), Chicago Cubs – We told you that there were a lot of batters plunked on Sunday. Amayas was one of the scariest, a 96mph fastball right off his wrist that left him prone in pain for quite a while, but manager David Ross said his catcher seemed to avoid anything too serious:

The rookie has been swinging a hot racquet since his debut last month, earning more and more playing time off the record.

Jeimer Candelario (thumb), Washington Nationals — Candelario was left out of the Nats’ lineup late on Sunday, and manager Davey Martinez told reporters after the game that his third baseman suffered a bruised thumb bone during Saturday’s game. He’s under consideration on a day-to-day basis for now, but the team will likely wait until Monday or Tuesday to see how they react before making a decision on a return.

Michael A Taylor (Head), Minnesota Twins — If Amaya didn’t have the scariest HBP of the day, then Taylor certainly did. The midfielder was hit in the back of the head by a mistaken curveball by Tigers substitute Alex Lange in the eighth inning, catching him just under his batting helmet as he tried to duck out of the way. Taylor left the game with a so-called head bruise and eventually went to the coaching bench under his own steam. Manager Rocco Baldelli said initial tests showed no concussion-like symptoms. He’s already been ruled out of Monday’s game but it’s too early to tell if he’ll need a call-up for IL.

Matt Vierling (rear), Detroit Tigers — Vierling was also late and missed Sunday’s game with back spasms just days after returning from an IL stay with back pain. That doesn’t bode well, of course, although the team hasn’t offered an update yet. The outfielder has .529 hits so far this month – and even got endorsed by the Oakland Athletics Twitter account at the All-Star Game – so it would be a huge loss to be forced to miss any more time.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) – NFL owners on Monday approved a rule change that allows teams to play an emergency quarterback from the inactive list if the first two are injured during a game, a decision stemming from San Francisco’s depth US chart challenge results in NFC championship game.

The bylaws were originally proposed by the Detroit Lions. The third quarterback designation does not count against the active player limit (either 47 or 48) set 90 minutes before kickoff.

Emergency Activation can only occur following an injury or disqualification, not as a result of a performance decision or other conduct. If one of the first two quarterbacks is cleared to return to the game by the team’s medical staff, the third must be removed from the game and may return as a quarterback only if an injury scenario recurs.

If a team puts three quarterbacks on the active list for a game, they cannot use the contingency option. An increase in the training squad on the day of the match is also not permitted.

49ers running back Christian McCaffery had his arm warmed up at the NFC Championship game in Philadelphia after Brock Purdy injured his elbow and Josh Johnson suffered a concussion. Purdy was pushed back into the game but couldn’t throw the ball more than 10 yards because the 49ers abandoned their game plan for a run-heavy attack in the 31-7 loss to the Eagles on Jan. 29.

The 49ers had already lost their two best quarterbacks — Trey Lance in Week 2 and Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13 — to season-ending injuries.

The league’s owners held their spring meetings Monday in Minnesota, with the upcoming sale of Dan Snyder’s family’s Washington Commanders to Josh Harris’ group remaining a major, if not urgent, issue. There will be no vote on the record $6.05 billion transaction this week.

“There are certain criteria that have to be met, and that’s the way it is. It’s not there yet, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get there. It’s complicated. Say it like this. I could explain it to you, but it wouldn’t tell you anything,” said Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, a member of the league’s finance committee.

Neither Snyder nor his wife, Tanya, came to Minnesota for the meeting. The league wants to approve the deal before the start of the regular season, Irsay said. Irsay said the amount of money at stake and the number of investors involved in Harris’ group – which includes National Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson – have lengthened the approval process.

“We work hard. Everyone wants to make it and needs to make sure it’s within league guidelines. It’s a complicated deal so we’re trying to just work through it and we’re confident we can pull it off. It will likely be several more weeks of discussion before we see if we can reach the finish line,” Irsay said.

Zach LaVine gives thumbs up for overcoming injuries that originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

When Zach LaVine made his decision to tape his left thumb and play with a torn ligament in his non-shooting hand, the Chicago Bulls were 4-0 and the All-Star security guard averaged 25.5 points on 50 percent shooting.

For the next few games, as his sales increased and his shooting rate decreased slightly, the thumb injury served as the central act for his and the Bulls’ season. Would he be able to keep playing it? Would it heal Would it affect him?

LaVine finally threw away the tape on Nov. 24 and didn’t look back and delve into the injury after Thursday’s practice session at the Advocate Center. And finally, admitting that it affected his game.

“You can check out my shooting columns,” said LaVine.

In 14 games with tape on his thumb, LaVine averaged 26.1 points, 3.4 assists and 2.8 ball losses, while he was 48.1 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from the 3-point range and 85.7 Percent shot out of line.

In 15 games since he left his protection, LaVine averaged 26.8 points, 4.9 assists and 2.8 ball losses, while he was 51.2 percent from the field, 45.4 percent from 3-point range and shot 82.9 percent off the line.

“I tore a ligament in my thumb. So it was pretty difficult to play with. I just thought I’d have to deal with it a lot longer, ”LaVine said. “Luckily I did the treatment and the training staff did a really good job of keeping track of things. And my body is just healed.

“Fortunately, I wasn’t hit in the thumb again. I think that was the main thing. Everything is healthy. Knock on wood. It should stay that way. “

LaVine said the thumb felt a lot better in early December, about a week after removing its protective tape. A stay in the league’s health and safety protocols allowed for more healing time – and less susceptibility to being hit on the pitch.

The story goes on

It’s a no-story now.

“Zach has always been the kind of act-out guy, at least since I’ve been with him. It’s very difficult to keep him off the ground, ”said coach Billy Donovan. “He’s smart too. I don’t want to make it seem like he’s not making wise decisions. For example, if it is going to be something that doesn’t necessarily cause more problems and he feels like he can play, he will play. He’s always been like that. And that’s what I really appreciate about him. “

Donovan said LaVine struggled to grip the ball with his left hand while playing through the injury. And he appreciated the dedication LaVine showed in setting out on his path.

“I give him a lot of credit,” said Donovan. “He’s a tough guy.”

SANTA CLARA, Calif .– It is still unclear whether Jimmy Garoppolo, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, will survive his right thumb injury against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

But if he has his way, Garoppolo will be in his usual starting spot in a game the 8-7 Niners must have to reach an NFC playoff spot. He said on Wednesday that he “definitely” had a chance to play against the Texans.

“I’ve basically played the entire game with it so it’s really just about grabbing the ball and doing the things I normally do and we’re going to test these out today, see how it feels and then move on.” said Garoppolo said. “But I am convinced of it.”

The 49ers can secure a postseason spot with a win against the Texans and a loss for the New Orleans Saints to the Carolina Panthers.

Before training on Wednesday, Garoppolo threw under the supervision of the team’s training staff. But Garoppolo was seen leaving the field before training began and was officially listed as a non-entrant on the attendance report.

Garoppolo also did not attend the team’s Monday “bonus” training session as he waited for the swelling of his thumb to subside. On Wednesday he threw for the first time since the Niners’ 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans last week.

“We’ll see how it looks today,” said Garoppolo on Wednesday. “If it looks good, it looks good. If it looks bad, it looks bad. It’s just one of those things to test and go through. Until we do, it’ll be hard to tell. But we will all be on the same page and do the right thing for the team. “

While there was some confusion about the severity of Garoppolo’s injury, coach Kyle Shanahan provided more clarity on Wednesday. According to Shanahan, Garoppolo has a grade 3 ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his right thumb, adding that reports of a fracture have been due to the sprain “peeling off” a small patch of his bone.

But Shanahan said Garoppolo didn’t need surgery and insisted it was the sprain that challenged Garoppolo’s status for Sunday.

“Anytime there’s a bone that has something on it, you can call it a fracture, you can call it a chip, you can call it something, but that really doesn’t stop it,” Shanahan said. “It’s the third degree sprain he has. But because it doesn’t move and stuff, he doesn’t need surgery and he has a chance to play this week.”

Rookie Trey Lance took over all repetitions with the starting offensive on Monday and did this again on Wednesday with Garoppolo.

If Lance gets the nod, it would only be his second NFL start after standing up for Garoppolo against the Arizona Cardinals on Oct.10. As of 2017, the Niners are 30-14 in his starts and 7-28 in games started by all the other quarterbacks.

For his part, Garoppolo said whether he plays depends on how he can grab and throw the ball. Suffering the injury late in the second quarter of the Titans loss, he ended the game despite throwing a poor interception to open the third quarter.

Garoppolo added that he had tweaked his throwing movement as the game progressed to compensate for the injury, although he downplayed its severity on the sideline and did not bring it to the media after the loss.

“It’s a torn ligament, so it is what it is,” said Garoppolo. “The pain, it’s not going anywhere so I know how that feels but it’s just about being confident and going out and being able to do what I normally do with football. We will see where it takes us, but I feel good. ” now with it. “

With Garoppolo battling the thumb injury and players across the league being on the reserve / COVID-19 list, the Niners are also taking additional steps to protect all of their players, including the quarterbacks.

San Francisco signed quarterback Tyler Bray to the training team on Wednesday, where he joins veteran Nate Sudfeld behind Garoppolo and Lance.

Shanahan said the team also switched all meetings to virtual on Wednesday, two days after the player added Mitch Wishnowsky as the team’s first player on the COVID list since August.

“We’ve been pretty lucky so far to only have one man on the ground,” said Shanahan. “But just watching the world and watching everyone, knowing that it’s a matter of time, looks like this, so let’s just try to be careful and keep everyone separate until we go outside.”
