SFO — Officials at San Francisco International Airport confirmed on Monday that a JetBlue flight was delayed after the aircraft collided with a moving vehicle on the tarmac, but there were no injuries reported.

The SFO duty manager told KPIX the accident happened Monday afternoon just after 4 p.m., saying that the JetBlue aircraft bound for Boston taxied back to the gate and the passengers were unloaded.

A traveler posted video on social media purporting to be the aftermath of the incident.

The duty manager said there was no word on what kind of damage was sustained by the jet. SFO said all the JetBlue passengers on the plane have gotten their luggage and were being rebooked on other flights.

JetBlue released a statement about the incident Monday evening.

“On Monday, November 6, JetBlue flight 534 was involved in an incident with a pushback tractor just after pushing back from the gate. All customers have deplaned and are being offered alternate flight options,” the statement read. “No injuries were reported. Safety is JetBlue’s first priority; we are reviewing this incident, and the aircraft has been taken out of service for inspection.”

Both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels have been struggling with injuries lately, but otherwise the teams are trending in different directions ahead of the two-game Freeway Series that begins Tuesday.

For the first time since 2014, the Angels (41-33) have a better record than the Dodgers (39-33) at the start of their annual match.

From August 4 through August 7, 2014, the Freeway Series included four games played equally at Dodger Stadium and Anaheim. The Angels went into the game with a record of 66-44 while the Dodgers had a record of 63-49. LA was shut out in the Freeway Series opener but responded with three straight wins over the Angels.

This season it’s 11-3 Angels in June. Their hot streak dates back to avoiding a four-game series win over the Houston Astros with a win in the Finals at Minute Maid Park, despite the Angels recently putting Zach Neto, Gio Urshela and Anthony Rendon on the injury list.

Conversely, the Dodgers lost just 5-10 in June and are in a win over the San Francisco Giants that included a historic loss at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers’ troubles date back to the start of a series against the Minnesota Twins on May 15. Since then they are 13-18 and have lost six out of ten series.

The primary reason for the Dodgers’ unexpected slip was increasing injuries in the starting rotation and the inconsistent performance of the bullpen overall. The Dodgers’ pitching team has a 4.66 ERA, which ranks 25th in baseball and is the franchise’s lowest grade since 1944.

“I think looking back over that two-week period, there’s a lot of things that we just don’t do well and we don’t play clean baseball, we don’t play fundamental baseball,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I think it’s about not just winning, but focusing on the little things.

“Catching the baseball, minimizing walks, throwing to the right base, not getting thrown on the bases, making a pickoff play, these are things that haunt us over and over again. And we’re usually a lot better at that, and we haven’t been good for the past few weeks. Those are things we need to clean up.”

Dodgers fall behind in NL West standings

By defeating the Giants, the Dodgers slipped to third place in the National League West standings. The Giants extended their best winning streak of the season to seven games.

With Alex Wood and Ross Stripling both currently on the injured list, the Giants have three traditional starters in their rotation.

Sean Manaea, who was moved to the bullpen earlier in the year due to poor performance, has made numerous appearances for relief. The Giants have resorted to multiple bullpen games and have two games next weekend with a starter listed as a TBA.

Speaking regularly at Tolbert & Copes, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said “we have the resources” to help the team when needed.

“Obviously Webb and Cobb did a great job for us at the head of the rotation,” Zaidi said. “DeSclafani was solid. He’s had a few crooked numbers for us lately, but we love the fact that he’s coming in and throwing strikes. The way we play defensively with his skills, we assume he will continue throwing the ball well. But yeah, with Wood and Stripling in the IL, fourth and fifth were more up in the air. Manaea really acts as a starter. He gave us four or five innings every time he got up there. We started opening for him to take the pressure off a bit. Sometimes guys actually get into the swing of things better and are better able to work their way into a game after an opening game. And that’s one of those things that you can’t fix unless it’s broken.”

Since moving to the bullpen, Manaea has a 2.93 ERA in 15.1 innings in five games. He made three consecutive goalless appearances before conceding four earned runs at Coors Field on Wednesday night.

“Maybe we’ll keep him in that role, maybe we’ll bring him back into the starting XI,” said Zaidi. “Then to your point: Kyle Harrison, Tristan Beck – who’s just on the pitching team and did a good job for us – Sean Hjelle and Keaton Winn also in Sacramento. So we have other options if Alex Wood and Ross Stripling need a little more time to come back.”

The biggest name Zaidi mentions in this series is Harrison. The top left-handed pitcher in baseball currently has a 3.55 ERA in 12 starts at triple-A. Of all the River Cats’ pitchers, he’s the longest pitcher measured by pitch count, but he still hasn’t pitched in the fifth inning.

Zaidi has said in the past that Harrison needs to demonstrate better attacking zone proficiency before being considered. This season, Harrison has rushed 34 batters in 38 innings while struggling with a tighter zone imposed by the automated ball and strike system.

Still a strikeout machine at 15.6K/9, Harrison is working on a new slider that he can place in the zone more often.

“We’d definitely like someone like Kyle Harrison to come up and grab one of those spots and throw more front of the rotation than middle or back,” Zaidi said. “But we just have to see how he starts. There are many reasons to be optimistic, but we still think he needs to work on a few things.”

Aside from the pitching team, the Giants are as healthy as they have been all season. With a full batting order, San Francisco secured a three-game win over the Rockies at Coors Field.

But with clean health, the Giants have the good problem of a full roster. Catcher Joey Bart, who is serving rehab at Sacramento, may not have a clear path to returning to the Giants roster if everyone stays healthy. Neither does Luis Matos, the midfielder destroyed the triple-A pitch.

Matos bats .375 and has 11 multi-hit games in 19 games with the River Cats. When asked about the Giants’ intentions for the Aug. 1 close, Zaidi mentioned Matos — not as a trade chip, but as a piece the Giants may need to clear to make room.

“We’re at a point now where we really want the engine of this team to come from our own house,” concluded Zaidi. “Luis Matos is playing really well in Triple-A. We really don’t have room for him at the moment. If he keeps producing, maybe we’ll try to create one. We have a pretty strong team and a strong squad.”

An Astros rotation already lacking significant depth and entering the year 2023 has received two major blows in the past few days.

Starting pitcher Jose Urquidy was placed on Monday’s 15-day injured list with a shoulder complaint, and Monday night brought more troubling news. Starting mate Luis Garcia left his start against San Francisco in the first inning with an elbow injury, and Astros manager Dusty Baker noted that Garcia will be out indefinitely after the game with an MRI scheduled for Tuesday.

It’s unclear how long each pitcher will be out of Houston’s rotation. But in the short term, Baker now faces a serious problem.

The two injuries further complicate a difficult dance for Baker. Starting the season with Justin Verlander, now in Queens, and Lance McCullers Jr. on the injured list, he took what is perhaps the team’s greatest strength and placed a legitimate question mark outside of Staff aces Framber Valdez and Cristian Javier. Now where exactly will Baker turn to with a pair of keys out of his arms? Let’s go through some options:

Internal Candidates

This remains the most likely path for Astros right now, with exploration for access via trading likely closer to the July 31st deadline. There are some relatively attractive opportunities within the organization at the moment.

Brandon Bielak is almost guaranteed a rotation spot after a strong showing on Monday, which included six strikeouts in four innings to relieve Garcia. Bielak isn’t the strongest arm, although his experience – with eight career starts under his belt – and performance should give him the upper hand.

– PitchingNinja Twitter

Who could take last place behind Bielak? The most likely candidate is right-hander JP France, who was protected by the Astros in the Rule 5 draft this offseason. Although there may be other possibilities at play. Right-hander Ronel Blanco dominated Spring Training competition with just one earned run in 17 innings, and Forrest Whitley has some upside potential following the hype. Given his past struggles at Triple-A Sugar Land, I’d be cautious about calling up Whitley. Although Baker could try to give Whitley a one-start trial in a pinch.

External options?

Astros CEO Dana Brown isn’t afraid to be aggressive considering he’s proposing a slew of potential contract extensions this summer, and perhaps the same logic will apply in the trading market. Where might the Astros look for guns? Let’s take a look at the bottom of the league table. Perhaps the NL East bottom-feeder in Washington — a phrase that was frankly unthinkable in October 2019 — will part ways with a low-cost veteran arm in Trevor Williams or Chad Kuhl, and a similar path could be taken in Oakland, though the A as (theoretical) divisional rival. The most appealing option could be in Kansas City, where Zack Grienke’s less-than-stellar homecoming could see him returning to a contender.

None of the above options are particularly attractive, but as May approaches, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than the league’s worst-performing teams wanting to sell. Instead, Brown will likely need to keep his proverbial prospect powder dry, hoping to get enough production through internal replacements before we really hit the dog days of summer.

A Brisbane man in custody for allegedly assaulting someone last month in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood may also face manslaughter charges now that the victim has died from his injuries.

The assault was reported about 2:11 am Oct. 6 on the 500 block of Broadway, where officers found the victim on the ground. He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, San Francisco police said.

At the time, a witness told police they had seen someone spit on the victim and pointed out a suspect, later identified as Alexis Octavio Meneses, 37.

Meneses was taken into custody on suspicion of misdemeanor battery at that time, and was cited and released.

Investigators later reviewed camera surveillance and developed evidence that Meneses allegedly punched the victim, causing the man to fall and hit his head on the ground. While the man was lying unconscious, Meneses allegedly kicked him multiple times and spit on the victim.

Meneses was arrested Oct. 31 on the 800 block of Bryant Street and booked on suspicion of multiple crimes that include assault likely to cause great bodily injury.

The victim died from his injuries on Nov. 4 at a hospital, police said. His name was not released.

On Monday, a complaint against Meneses was amended to include manslaughter.

While an arrest has been made, the investigation is still active. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. Tips may remain anonymous.

SAN FRANCISCO — When Paul Pelosi returned to the family’s San Francisco home, he paused at the doorway where he was violently attacked and injured in a hammer attack by a politically motivated intruder.

In a lengthy interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi talked about the extent of her husband’s injuries and long journey to recovering both physically and emotionally.

With her voice filled with emotion during the interview, Pelosi said she has not talked about the Oct. 28 assault with her husband.

“We haven’t quite had that conversation, because any revisiting of it is really traumatizing,” she said. “It was hard, and one of the hardest things all week was to go back into the house for him – in the entrance, which is of course where he was hit.”

“The doctors had said, you know, we don’t want him to watch the news,” she continued. “We don’t want him to be revisiting a lot of this, at least not now, because it will add to the trauma. And the operation was a success, but it’s only one part of the recovery. The dramatic, drastic head injury . It takes some time.”

David DePape is charged with six counts relating to the attack, including attempted murder, burglary, assault, false imprisonment and threatening the family member of a public official. He has pleaded not guilty to all state charges.

Federal prosecutors have charged him with attempted kidnapping and assault.

Revisiting the attack also brings a great deal of emotional pain for Nancy Pelosi, herself.

“For me, this is really the hard part because Paul wasn’t the target,” she told Cooper. “And he’s the one who’s paying the price, I mean we all are, but he’s the one who’s really paying the price. But it really – it’s really sad, because it is a flame that was fueled by misinformation and all the rest of that , which is most unfortunate.”

DePape confronted Paul Pelosi in a bedroom, asking repeated, ‘Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?’ Still groggy from being suddenly awoken, Pelosi responded, ‘She’s not here.’

When Pelosi asked DePape why he wanted to see his wife, the suspect answered according to court documents:

“‘Well, she’s number two in line for the presidency, right?'” When Mr. Pelosi agreed, Defendant responded that they are all corrupt and ‘we’ve got to take them all out.'”

San Francisco police said officers responded to the 2600 block of Broadway for a 911 call of a home break-in at approximately 2:27 am

When San Francisco police officers arrived, Pelosi and DePape were wrestling over a hammer.

“When officers arrived on scene, they encountered an adult male and Mrs. Pelosi’s husband, Paul,” SFPD Chief Bill Scott told reporters. “Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer. The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it.”

“Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid,” he added.

The assault left Paul Pelosi with severe head and arm injuries.

“(The head injury was) on the top in two places,” Nancy Pelosi said of the skull fracture. “And that’s pretty awful. That’s pretty awful. But the good news was when he came – when he had the operation, and we were blessed by the health care professionals at San Francisco General. They told us it had not pierced his brain, which is what could be deadly or worse.”

“What they had to do was they had to take off the skull, reshape it, put it back so it didn’t scratch or pierce the brain. It’s pretty – it’s a pretty serious operation… Always concern, the hematomas, all the rest of that.”

Then came a short-lived light moment in the early hours.

“My son Paul told me that when he – see, I got on the plane right away to go, to come to California, but he was now out of the operation,” Nancy Pelosi said. “And Paul [Jr.] said, ‘Mommy’s on her way here,’ and Paul said – the first thing he said, ‘Oh your mother is going to be very happy, because the Ravens won last night.'”

Nancy Pelosi was born and raised in Baltimore.

When asked how her husband was doing, Nancy Pelosi answered:

“He’s doing okay. He is – it’s a long haul. But he knows he has to pace himself. He’s, he’s such a gentleman that he’s not complaining. But he’s also knowing that it’s a long haul. He’s so concerned about the traumatic effect on our children and our grandchildren. And we’re concerned about the traumatic effect on him.”

Upgrading the quarterback was an immediate goal for the 49ers.

When their season was over, they knew they had to make a difference in that position. When your starting quarterback is struggling to stay on the field immensely, you have a tremendous problem. It’s okay to get along with other starters who have the time. It’s practically impossible to do this with the starting quarterback out.

This was the repeated reason the 49ers had been asking about quarterbacks all off-season and how they led to Trey Lance. Jimmy Garoppolo simply cannot find happiness with his health. The guy is essentially glassy considering how easily he can get injured and miss the time. Even Sean McVay mentioned on the Flying Coach podcast with McVay and Peter Schrager, while Kyle Shanahan was a guest, that the only problem the 49ers had with Garoppolo was lack of availability.

But are injuries the only reason the 49ers are pulling away from Garoppolo?

I call that bullshit.

There is absolutely NO CHANCE that the 49ers will move away from Garoppolo just because of its availability issues. If that were true, the 49ers wouldn’t have hit the press from the moment their off-season began inquiring about upgrades. Nor would they have traded a hefty draft capital to advance and take Lance into the draft. They would have been ranked 12th and would have taken Mac Jones to look after him and be the heir to the throne (h / t Ben Meyerson from All49ersSI).

Injuries obviously play a role in why the 49ers are pulling away from Garoppolo. And it’s also possible that this is the basis of why they looked for upgrades. However, I totally deny that this is the ONLY reason, as McVay said on the podcast, and as Shanahan has said several times. Not only did Shanahan want a quarterback he didn’t have to worry about, he wanted one who could “work out of his pocket,” as he constantly notes. Garoppolo is struggling with this. He can’t stand in there and work through his progress or manipulate the bag so he doesn’t run into sacks.

Instead, he transforms into a tap dancer as soon as his first reading is taken away. He literally starts freaking out and panics like a deer in headlights. This must frustrate Shanahan, especially when the recipients are wide open most of the time. That’s why they ended up with Lance. Shanahan sees him as a guy who can cover the offensive. He sees him as a player who can work in his pocket and when the game isn’t there he can do something of his own with his athleticism.

Even with a healthy Garoppolo, the offense of the 49ers is limited. With Lance, Shanahan suddenly has a new dynamic that he can add to his offensive and fully optimize. The 49ers can go on saying it, but injuries aren’t the only cause of Garoppolo.
