India is likely one of the fastest-growing abroad customer markets for San Francisco, says official : The Tribune India

After JFK airport in New York, San Francisco has emerged as the number two gateway for Indians in the US which is mainly driven by the expansion and new non-stop flights of Air India, according to officials who were in Mumbai this week to explore avenues to tap the huge Indian market.

“Our market measurement shows there are about 1,100 passengers per day each way between San Francisco, the Bay Area and India,” Kevin Bumen, Chief Financial & Commercial Officer at San Francisco International Airport told PTI in an interview after concluding his two-day visit to Mumbai.

Air India, he said, has been a real bright spot during the pandemic with a carrier that grew and really made the most of a difficult market and made some big moves with their expansion in San Francisco.

“Today San Francisco is the number two gateway in the US behind John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). We’re 17 flights a week. JFK has 21 flights a week. And if United Airlines were operating their full schedule, we (San Francisco) would be the number one airport in the US for India service. That would add an additional 14 flights a week if United was operating at full capacity,” he said.

Air India now has nonstop flights from San Francisco to New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

“It’s an exciting story,” said Bumen, who led a delegation of officials from San Francisco this week. The Indian travellers to San Francisco are now approaching the pre-pandemic level, said Hubertus Funke, executive vice president and chief tourism officer of the San Francisco Travel Association.

From a visitor volume perspective, San Francisco Airport had about 210,000 visitors in 2019.

“Now we are just getting to about 211,000 visitors this year,” he told PTI.

“That’s a really good increase from last year and we’re expecting double-digit growth out of India for the next couple of years as well. So, we’re seeing a lot of potential out of the Indian market. We know that it was a very strong market before and we kind of want to continue the trend and see what we can do to really leverage these opportunities moving forward,” he said.

A primary focus of this visit was to underscore India’s significance as one of the fastest-growing overseas visitor markets for San Francisco. The delegates are dedicated to creating immersive travel experiences and strengthening cultural ties for Indian tourists visiting San Francisco.

India, one of the fastest-growing overseas visitor markets for San Francisco, has emerged as a key focus area for SFO and SFTA. In 2022,

India ranked among San Francisco’s top five visitor markets, with 150,000 visitors welcomed. Visitor volume from India is set to grow by 34 per cent in 2023, a testament to the strong ties between the two regions, a media release said.

During their stay in Mumbai from October 9th to 10th, the delegates held meetings with key stakeholders. These interactions involved exploring avenues for fostering mutual understanding, cooperation and potential collaborations in the future.

“The cultural richness and economic vibrancy of India resonate deeply with San Francisco’s spirit. We are committed to fostering stronger ties and enhancing mutual understanding between our two regions. India’s exponential growth as a visitor market fuels our enthusiasm to create compelling travel experiences for Indian tourists in San Francisco,” Funke said.

Bumen said India holds immense potential for San Francisco.

“San Francisco International Airport is proud to be the premier international gateway to the West Coast, ensuring seamless travel experiences for Indian travellers. Our aim is to further strengthen this connection, making SFO the preferred choice for travellers from India,” he said.

Funke said in addition to the number of Indians travelling to the US through San Francisco, there has been a significant growth in the number of visitors spending out of India.

“For 2023, we’re expecting that number to be almost USD 440 million and then for 2024, we’re expecting another 63 per cent in spend from Indian visitors,” he said in response to a question.

“The potential that we’re seeing is very important and that is obviously manifested by the demand in airlift as well and especially the expansion that Air India has given to SFO. We are seeing really good potential for the next few years also from a visitor standpoint,” he said.

India firm builds million-dollar houses with grass-covered rooftops in Frisco

FRISCO — The first time Ravi Vanjani and his wife Harshika visited the model home of their new community, they were sold on one thing — that they were taken by surprise.

Ravi, 37, is a vice president of product management for JPMorgan Chase in Plano, and Harshika is a developer for Uber Freight in Frisco. The couple currently live in Carrollton and will soon move into a development like no other in North Texas.

The Vanjanis are building a 4,000-square-foot home for roughly $1.5 million in the 56-acre Tapestry community by Indian company Total Environment Homes along Little Bluestem Lane in east Frisco.

The community will include 121 homes with unconventional roofs topped with grass designed to take the place of the greenery that existed before the homes were built.

The builder poured environmentally conscious features into its floor plans. Ravi pointed out that almost every room — on both levels — enters an outdoor space.

“You know what you’re walking into when you look at a house; a room here, a room there,” Vanjani said. “You don’t get things that catch you actually by surprise in houses anymore, so this house was very different in that regard.”

From India to Frisco

The community is the work of Kamal Sagar, an architect who lives in Bangalore, India, but frequently travels to the states.

In 1996, when he was running an architectural practice, Sagar tried to buy a home for himself but found builders were focused more on marketing and fads than designing with homebuyers in mind.

Wanting something more thoughtfully done and meaningfully designed, he started Total Environment, which has since built both single-family homes and apartment towers in India.

In Frisco, Sagar is bringing his work to the U.S. for the first time.

“We just felt that the product that we have can work in other parts of the world as well, and we wanted to check that out and prove that for ourselves,” he said.

“The reason it works all the way on the other side of the planet, for a completely different lifestyle in different climates and everything, is because it is authentically designed around a family’s needs.”

In 2016, Sagar was looking to build in the U.S. and found a piece of land in San Francisco, but realized it would be a complicated process to get the homes approved and that costs would be high.

Sagar said he ran into a customer in Bangalore who recommended he not build in California and instead build in Frisco, citing its rapid growth and corporate relocations.

A real estate agent found the property along Rowlett Creek with 900 trees — perfect for the environmentally savvy builder.

“I came here and saw it and really fell in love with it,” Sagar said.

Sagar said he bought it for a reason nobody else would — water and trees made parts of the property undevelopable. For Sagar, who aimed to connect people with nature, those elements were perfect.

“This property is really beautiful,” Sagar said. “These water bodies, they attract a lot of wildlife. There’s actually a set of birds that migrate I think from Canada, they stop here at this place, and then they continue from here.”

The city of Frisco approved the project in 2018. The project started sales in January 2021, but pandemic-related supply chain issues paused construction for about six months.

The company has sold three homes to customers and is building five additional homes that will be available for sale. The company hasn’t yet started a big marketing push.

“Back in India, we are a very, very strong brand,” with “rocking” sales, Sagar said. “We will hit that here as well pretty soon.”

Natural focus

When driving past homes in Tapestry, the first thing that stands out is the grass-covered rooftops.

Sagar says they have many environmental perks. The thermal mass of the roof keeps the home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and it reduces rainwater runoff.

In addition to the greenery on the roof, homes have grass-covered courtyards on both floors that connect to most rooms that people can walk out on.

“It just gives you a very positive feeling and hopefully inspires you,” Sagar said.

The homes also have six geothermal wells below them that go about 300 feet into the ground, and the water is at a constant temperature that heats and cools, according to Sagar.

“When there was this massive freeze a couple of years back in January and everything was in bad shape, this place was nice and crisp and warm inside,” he said.

An automaker’s approach

Sagar aims to mimic the process and the reliability of automobile manufacturing rather than the typical techniques of large-scale homebuilders.

“You can get into a car and drive for miles, and maybe thunderstorm and lightning and hail stones and whatever, you’re never going to worry about water coming into the car,” he said. “But homes all over the world, they have leakages, they have sinks getting clogged, you have plumbing problems or electrical problems.”

To aim for better quality, Sagar decided to handle many elements of the homes in-house. The company produces some materials such as doors and windows itself and offers its own furniture as an option for buyers.

Like an automaker, Total Environment adopted a fixed-product approach in 2008, with labeled products that it iterates on.

The Frisco community will offer three models: the 3,233-square-foot V30, the 4,394-square-foot V40 and the 5,472-square-foot V50.

The starting prices for models range from $1.3 million to $1.9 million before customization. Three- and four-bedroom floor plans come standard, but a fifth bedroom can be added.

“It’s a home product that evolves with time, so you do version one, version two, version three, version four,” Sagar said. “That’s what happened in the automobile industry. Every model keeps improving, you keep learning from the previous model and making it better and better and better.”

San Francisco-Sure Air India Flight Makes Emergency Touchdown In Russia

The United States said Tuesday it was closely monitoring the situation after an Air India flight bound for San Francisco in Russia made an emergency landing.

Flight AI173 from Delhi was diverted to Magadan in Russia on Tuesday due to engine failure, the Tata Group private airline said in a statement last night. The flight with 216 passengers and 16 crew members landed safely.

“We are aware of a flight to the US that made an emergency landing in Russia and are continuing to monitor the situation closely. I cannot confirm how many U.S. citizens were on board the flight at the time,” State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters at his daily news briefing.

“It was a flight going to the United States. Therefore, it is of course likely that American citizens are on board. There are public reports from Air India that, as far as I know, they are sending a replacement aircraft there. “The goal is to let passengers continue on their route, but I would leave it up to the airline to talk about it further,” replied Patel on a question.

“Given the infrastructural limitations surrounding the remote airport, we can confirm that after making serious attempts to accommodate passengers in on-site hotels with the help of local government authorities, all passengers were eventually transferred to temporary accommodation,” the media statement said .

“Since we have no Air India staff stationed in the remote city of Magadan or in Russia, ground assistance to passengers in this unusual situation is best possible through our 24/7 connection with the Consulate General of India in Vladivostok, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Government of India), local ground handlers and the Russian authorities,” the statement said.

Pending necessary regulatory approvals, a ferry flight is scheduled to operate from Mumbai, India (BOM) to GDX on June 7, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. IST, which would take passengers and crew of AI173 onward to San Francisco, the statement said .

Air India Boosts Mumbai-San Francisco Companies By 33%

Air India has increased Mumbai-San Francisco flights for next summer even before the first flight has taken off.

Air India’s brand-new Mumbai to San Francisco nonstop service begins on December 15 – in two weeks. Even before the route’s first flight, it has expanded its summer schedule from 3 weekly to 4 weekly, suggesting forward bookings are strong. It’ll be one of 12 Air India routes to North America, joined by Mumbai-JFK, which starts soon and will be Air India’s third attempt at it

Mumbai-SFO flights are up already

In late September, Air India announced Mumbai-San Francisco, its third route to the California city and Star Alliance hub, joining Delhi and Bengaluru.

At 8,406 miles (13,529km), Mumbai-San Francisco runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays this winter using three-class, 238-seat B777-200LRs. These have eight first seats, 35 in business, and 195 in economy.

From the end of March, the start of the Northern Hemisphere summer season, it’ll operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, still using 777-200LRs. It is scheduled as follows, with all times local:

Mumbai-San Francisco: AI179, 14:30-18:00 same-day arrival (16h block time)
San Francisco-Mumbai: AI180, 22:00-03:40+2 (17h 10m)

In 2019, Mumbai-San Francisco had 148,000 roundtrip passengers, according to booking data. It means that San Francisco had 203 passengers daily each way to/from Mumbai when split equally across the year. The California city was Mumbai’s largest werved market in the USA/Canada.

Booking data reveals that most passengers transited with Emirates (over Dubai), Cathay Pacific (Hong Kong), Air India itself (Delhi), Air China (Beijing), and Lufthansa (Frankfurt).

Mumbai-San Francisco passengers paid an average one-way fare (excluding taxes and any fuel surcharge) of $510. Compared to Air India’s existing Delhi-San Francisco, Mumbai is 9% farther in distance terms but had a 16% higher fare. However, for the coming Mumbai-JFK, San Francisco is 8% farther yet had a 6% lower fare.

Will Air India be able to capture enough demand from those willing to pay more to save a few hours by flying nonstop?

The longest flight between India and the US is set to resume next month. According to a recent report, Air India plans to restart direct flights between Bengaluru in South India and San Francisco in about a month. The service was suspended, citing poor demand due to COVID, but the airline is reportedly bringing it back. The route will, of course, be flown by the 777-200LR.

Air India’s longest nonstop flight is set to resume soon. According to a report by ET Now, the carrier will start a twice-weekly nonstop service between Bengaluru (BLR) and San Francisco (SFO) from October end for its winter schedule.

The service was inaugurated during the COVID pandemic on January 10th, 2021. Flight AI 176 took off from San Francisco with four women pilots, 12 cabin crew members, and 238 passengers. It covered a distance of almost 14,000 km on the Atlantic route that had it fly over the North Pole.

Being an IT hub, Bengaluru is also on the list of US carriers, as many US West Coast-bound passengers originate from the city. However, nothing has materialized so far.

Suspended in March

Air India’s BLR-SFO service last flew in March, and people in the know cited poor demand for suspending the flight. The Times of India quoted an airline official at Bengaluru airport as saying,

“AI 175 took off from Bengaluru on Saturdays and Tuesdays while AI 176 from SF landed here on Mondays and Thursdays. But the COVID crisis and landing permit issues for the airline in the US saw the disruption of the longest direct flight from South India to the US. Though operations resumed as the COVID situation eased, the flight didn’t have enough passengers.”

However, the ToI reports to an Air India officer saying that the flight was not suspended due to poor patronage but because of the carrier’s Boeing 777s undergoing an overhaul. The source added,

“The flights are getting ready for restart of the longest operation to the US in a big manner, which will be announced soon.”

Air India’s monopoly on the route

With the COVID situation improving, demand for more India-US flights is on the rise. Many people have taken to social media demanding better connectivity between Bengaluru and the US.

Air India also finds itself in an advantageous position to monopolize the route due to the current geopolitical developments. Both United Airlines and American Airlines are keen on establishing direct flights from Bengaluru to the US West Coast, but COVID and then the Russia-Ukraine conflict spoiled those plans.

Earlier this year, American Airlines once again halted plans for its long-delayed flight from Bangalore (BLR) to Seattle (SEA), which was initially set to debut in 2020. Many western airlines, including the ones in the US, are not overflying the Russian airspace, which is vital for an ultra-long-haul flight originating from Bengaluru.

Air India continues to fly over Russia and is, therefore, the only carrier as of now to be able to connect BLR with the US. The airline, in fact, is planning a significant expansion into the North American market by leasing five more Boeing 777-200LRs for these long flights.
