San Francisco has plenty of open-air markets, from regular farmer’s markets to massive craft fairs, and there’s never a shortage of amazing local vendors. One must-see market takes place on the first Sunday of every month, focusing on local creatives. The Castro Art Mart isn’t your average market; it also includes lively entertainment, true to the vibrancy of the Castro.

The market is held on the first Sunday every month, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The outdoor market aims to give a space for local artists to showcase their work and build community. You can find the art mart at the small intersection of Noe St and Market St, right next to the iconic Lookout Bar in the Castro.

The market embodies the lively Castro spirit, complete with performances from local musicians. The Art Mart has over 30 local artists participating in the monthly event. Plus, the event will have a drag party from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Various types of artists participate in the art fair, from painters to mixed media creatives; the market is guaranteed to be full of creative energy. Past markets have included tarot card readers, live bands, and fabulous drag performances.

The organization behind Castro Art Mart

The Castro Art Mart is run by Arty Hood, an organization that aims to help break down barriers that artists often encounter in the art industry. The organization helps facilitate connections between local artists and businesses. Arty Hood also organizes the Valencia St Art Corridor every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. The event takes place on Valencia St between 18th St and 21st, running through November.

If you want to get involved in the organization, you can become a volunteer to help organize the art fairs and support local artists.

The next Castro Art Mart takes place on Sunday, August 6, 2023, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The market takes place at the intersection of Noe and Market Street.

San Francisco homeowner Erika Gemzer is nearly a week past her due date.

Instead of resting with her feet up, the expectant mother is in the middle of a six-month ordeal that has forced her to move out of her home, send hundreds of emails and swim in a sea of multicolored spreadsheets as she attempts to repair her home—which was destroyed after her upstairs Airbnb guests clogged her toilet and completely flooded the property.

READ MORE: San Francisco Airbnb Bookings Plunge as City Battles Bad Press

On Friday afternoon, she walked through the halls of her gutted home with floorboards torn up, dismantled drywall, and personal belongings stacked up in disarray. It’s become a familiar routine for her and her husband as they’ve dealt with a virtual army of contractors, plumbers and claims adjusters.

“When does it end? That’s the unknown I live with every day,” Gemzer said. “How long am I going to think about this and replay this moment in my life?”

Erika Gemzer inspects the walls of her AirBnb unit while offering a tour of her damaged home on Friday. | Source: Juliana Yamada for The Standard

Gemzer, who detailed her story in a viral Twitter thread, said that instead of offering aid, Airbnb has given her a monthslong runaround with an eventual offer of only around 10% of the financial losses she estimates the issue caused.

She added that the company’s AirCover policy, meant to provide “top to bottom protection” for hosts during catastrophic events, fails to live up to that promise.

READ MORE: Airbnb Profit Jumps as Bookings Increase, Rental Rates Hold Steady

“We offered to pay the loss of bookings, her insurance deductible and additional reimbursement as a gesture of goodwill – we have been in continuous contact with the Host, including speaking today, to continue to support her,” an Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement.

The two-unit Edwardian in the heart of the Mission District was a stretch for Gemzer and her husband to purchase in 2018, but it allowed them to set roots in the city. The decision to purchase was due in part to their ability to help offset the cost of the mortgage with rental income.

Erika Gemzer looks at photos of her friends and family in her sewage-damaged home. | Source: Juliana Yamada for The Standard

After the property’s long-term tenants moved out of the top-floor flat in fall 2021, the couple decided to rent out the unit on Airbnb to earn revenue while keeping the place open for visiting family members.

Other than the occasional broken appliance or repair, hosting on the platform went relatively smoothly until this past April when two visitors from Turkey booked to stay in the flat for a month.

Gemzer and her husband had just started telling close family they were pregnant with their first child in April when soon after they woke up to a dripping sound and discovered water flowing in through the ceiling and fixtures.

They alerted their upstairs Airbnb guests and when her husband went inside they found the unit vacant and water covering the floor. The source of the water became evident quite quickly as he saw a streaming toilet with fecal matter still in the bowl before he rapidly shut off the water on the building.

When they opened the door to their underground storage space and saw five inches of water flooding they started to understand their home was virtually uninhabitable.

“That’s when we realized just how much water had traversed the three floors,” Gemzer said. “Doing a quick water calculation, you’re like volumetrically, this is really, really bad.”

Since her social media post went viral, there have been some people who have taken aim at the guests, but Gemzer said she does not believe the guests intended for this level of damage.

“I don’t want them to be harassed,” Gemzer said. “It’s a crappy thing to do to abandon the clogged toilet, but there’s no way in their mind they thought they were going to ruin the house.”

The toilet in Erika Gemzer’s AirBnb, which she calls “The Murderer,” caused extensive water damage to her property. | Source: Juliana Yamada for The Standard

Gemzer estimated that around 50% of the square footage of the property received water damage from the flooding. The family called in a water remediation specialist who set up deafening dehumidifiers around the house.

Without any certainty about insurance coverage, Gemzer and her husband stayed among the ruined wallpaper and warped floorboards for a week, before ironically—decamping for an Airbnb with their chihuahua mix. Their orange tabby cat, however, wasn’t allowed, and the couple went back and forth daily to check on their pet.

Drying out the house took a total of seven weeks and cost a total of $130,000. When they were able to finally get a construction estimate, that total came in at just shy of a quarter of a million dollars.

While the bulk of these costs are being shouldered by her homeowners insurance, Gemzer said she hopes Airbnb will help her pay for a number of costs, including revenue from lost bookings, insurance premiums, mortgage payments for her inhabitable home, additional water damage demolition not covered by insurance, and the gap between the approved amount for repairs and the actual cost charged by her contractors.

Light beams in through an exposed ceiling in Erika Gemzer’s home. | Source: Juliana Yamada for The Standard

Left without a permanent home, the couple moved from short-term rental to short-term rental before signing a seven-month lease at a house a few blocks away. Repairs, which are expected to take another half year, have yet to be started.

The process with Airbnb first required Genzer to ask the guests to foot the bill, which was unsuccessful. The company then assigned someone to her case and eventually connected her with a third-party adjuster who asked for additional documentation over the course of weeks in an effort to determine liability.

“We take Aircover requests incredibly seriously, including in this case, where we tried to send a third-party investigator to review the damage, but the Host declined, stating that her homeowners insurance company was supporting her with the damage as well as temporary accommodation,” an Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement.

The Standard viewed dozens of emails between Genzer and the third-party investigator Crawford & Company who eventually would send a plumber to diagnose the issue.

“I was continuing to spend hours and hours and hours a week justifying what had happened,” Gemzer said. “Literally our house was empty at this point, we had to beg them to leave the toilet, which was uninstalled and sitting on the ground upside down.”

The damage left torn-up floors and baseboards in the rental flat. | Source: Juliana Yamada for The Standard

The plumber snaked the line and found baby wipes and paper towels lodged in the pipes, but was unable to comprehensively determine the cause of the flooding.

“The cause of the problem was from abuse of drain and toilet internal parts not functioning properly,” the plumbing report stated.

The issue was caused by a combination of the toilet bowl clogging, the wipes and paper in the pipe and the float valve in the tank allowing the toilet to continue to run and flood the home.

Unable to gain traction through the normal process, Gemzer was able to connect with a former Airbnb employee who told her about how to find someone inside the company that could elevate the case internally.

But Gemzer said Airbnb required her to get individual quotes for items prior to being told if it would be covered by the company’s policy, meaning a continual hamster wheel of finding a vendor, getting a quote and sending it to Airbnb before being told if it’s covered.

Over the course of her entire communication with Airbnb, Gemzer said she never was able to speak to someone over the phone. After her post went viral, Gemzer said an executive called her husband, but she has yet to hear directly from the company.

Instead of having hosts just rely on their limited policy, Gemzer said she hopes that Airbnb could partner with other short-term rental insurance providers to offer negotiated rates for additional protection, and educate hosts on the limits of their baseline coverage.

“I just want to stop the bleeding and know that the mountains of financial losses are not going to continue to mount,” Gemzer said. “You advertise that we got your back when things go really wrong, but you don’t and you know that you don’t.”

ABOUT SARASOTA YOUTH OPERA

Since 1984, Sarasota Youth Opera has given thousands of young people ages 8 to 18 an opportunity to experience the joy of opera firsthand through participation in fully staged Youth Opera productions, Sarasota Opera main stage productions, summer camps, and concerts throughout the community.

Sarasota Youth Opera is the only program in the United States committed to both presenting an annual full-scale opera production for young voices, as well as accepting all who wish to participate regardless of skill level or ability to pay.

Youth Opera Choruses: Beginning at age 8, singers are placed in one of two chorus levels. Each chorus provides a setting for everyone to participate and progress at their own level as they gain greater skills and experience. Selections performed are made up of classical music, which includes opera and choral pieces in different languages. The choruses perform throughout the community in formal concerts and outreach events.

Opera Mainstage Season: Members of the Youth Opera are selected to join Sarasota Opera’s Winter Festival season, appearing in the mainstage children’s chorus, as supernumeraries (extras who perform non-singing roles) and for special roles written by the composer for children’s voices. In recent seasons these have included roles in La bohème, Tosca, and Carmen. Singers are involved in the complete production process – from early music and dramatic rehearsals to performing alongside opera professionals.

Youth Opera Productions: Part of Sarasota Opera’s commitment to young people includes the commissioning of new operatic works written for children and young adults. Six new works have been presented as part of this mission: Deadline (1989), Polly Pen’s Her Lightness (1993), Tom Suta’s Eye of Ra (1998), John Kennedy’s The Language of Birds (2004), Daron Hagen’s Little Nemo in Slumberland (2012) and Rachel J. Peters’ Rootabaga Country (2017). Members take part in the making of each opera, complete with professional staging, costumes, lighting, sound, and orchestral accompaniment.

PHILADELPHIA & SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today, Comcast hosted a Digital Equity Summit in San Francisco. The gathering brought together more than 100 executives, program directors, community leaders, public officials, and other key stakeholders from around the Golden State working to close the digital divide and create digital equity. The goals of the summit were to highlight best practices; learn more about current and future needs of vulnerable communities; and identify challenges, solutions, and available funding resources. The summit also served as a moment to celebrate the work of Comcast’s valued digital equity partners across California, who worked throughout the pandemic to help drive Internet adoption and provide digital literacy training for those in need.

In addition, the company announced it has exceeded its expanded goal to launch 1,250 Lift Zones before the end of this year. Comcast’s award-winning Lift Zones program provides free WiFi access in neighborhood community centers nationwide. Since September 2020, Lift Zones have enabled nearly six million free WiFi user sessions for students, veterans, seniors, and adults.

According to a consumer survey of users who visited a Lift Zone:

4 in 10 report they would not have had Internet access without the Lift Zone.

50% of low-income households in major Comcast markets are within walking distance of a lift zone.

58% of Lift Zone users strongly believe that the site helps them achieve more.

58% report the Lift Zone reduces stress with studying, working remotely, and/or managing tasks online.

56% say the Lift Zone is critical for success at school, work, and/or managing tasks online.

92 percent of sites report that being a Lift Zone helps them increase digital equity in their communities.

The Lift Zones program is part of Comcast’s Project UP – a comprehensive initiative to advance digital equity and build a future of unlimited possibilities. Backed by a $1 billion commitment, Project UP will help reach tens of millions of people with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed in a digital world.

“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity right now to help connect the unconnected,” said Broderick Johnson, EVP Digital Equity and EVP Public Policy, Comcast Corporation. “Working together between Comcast, our nonprofit partners, and the state and federal government, we will connect more households to the Internet and help even more people take advantage of critical resources such as the federal Affordable Connectivity Program and digital skills training.”

“Comcast’s continued partnership and dedication to our communities have resulted in allowing more students, children, seniors, and families to get connected to the Internet,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed. “Public private partnerships like these allow us to ensure that all of our communities have access to services they need to thrive.”

Comcast’s Lift Zones were initially created in partnership with city leaders and nonprofit partners to help keep students connected to schools during the early stages of the pandemic. These digital navigators helped countless communities at a time when they needed it the most. Even as students return to their classrooms, Comcast continues to see strong demand for Lift Zones that serve underrepresented populations and offer an array of digital literacy programs, access to online healthcare services, workforce development training, and digital navigator support.

“Thanks to Comcast, we’ve been able to connect many of our families to the Internet with high-speed WiFi to support a dynamic learning environment for their children,” said Gloria Corral, President and CEO of Parent Institute for Quality Education. “Today’s Digital Equity Summit confirms Comcast’s commitment to the communities we serve. I am eager to see how today’s conversation will improve and help support the lives of the children and families.”

In addition to the Lift Zone program, which earlier this year won SXSW’s “People’s Choice Award,” Comcast is proud to participate in the Federal Government’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). ACP provides eligible households with a $30/month subsidy that can be applied toward their Internet service. When used to pay for Comcast’s Internet Essentials service, home broadband Internet is effectively free.

Powered by a Comcast Business solution, the company has installed more than 150 Lift Zones across the state of California. To find a Lift Zone near you, please visit: https://internetessentials.com/learningsearchpage and for additional information on Project UP, please visit corporate.comcast.com/impact/project-up.

Disney legend Dick Van Dyke, who portrays Bert, the carefree cockney chimney sweep, in MARY POPPINS, will host interstitials throughout the ABC show of “‘The Wonderful World of Disney” presented by Target Brings You MARY POPPINS TODAY, DECEMBER 12 (8: 00-11: 00 pm, EST) Check out the photos of the show below!

Van Dyke is accompanied by Target’s mascot “Bullseye”, the lovable bull terrier. This holiday event marks the first television broadcast of “Mary Poppins” on the network in 13 years. It is also the first time Target’s Holiday Odyssey story – told through a series of commercials – has been shown in full on television.

In brand new footage, with a little help from Bullseye, Mr. Van Dyke takes viewers on a magical journey into the Disney archives, where they can discover treasures, including iconic props from “Mary Poppins” and other Disney favorites, and he gives Insights into a film that continues to thrill generations of families to this day.

The film is set in Edwardian London and shows the straightforward nanny Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews), who flies out of the windy London sky into the house of two mischievous children of the affluent and strict Banks family, Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber ). With the help of Bert (Mr. Van Dyke), the spirited nanny goes on a series of fantastic adventures with the children, teaching her parents some lessons about love along the way.

Disney’s popular classic received a total of 13 Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture, and won five: Best Actress (Julie Andrews), Best Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”), Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Music Score.

The film contains many classic songs including “A Spoonful of Sugar”, “Jolly Holiday”, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, “Feed the Birds”, “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”.

Released in 1964, Mary Poppins combines live action and animation and was listed by the Library of Congress in the United States’ National Film Registry in 2013 as “Culturally, Historically, or Aesthetically Significant”.

For those who want to whisper secrets to the real Santa Claus, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is for you.

Let’s call it miracles on Geneva Avenue, because children know one when they see one. There are large crowds who meet the legend with a real beard and a deep laugh.

Santa Claus, played by veteran 80-year-old actor Will Wood, isn’t a dull-eyed department store that’s overfed and stuffed into a polyester suit.

Wood is a highlight of the fair, which takes place at Cow Palace every year until Christmas in the 20th year.

It’s a Bay Area tradition for many families who love to stroll through Victorian London at dusk with a stretch of snow on the ground and 1,000+ lights created for a magical, unforgettable landscape.

Wood calls it a Christmas card that comes to life.

“You see the whole family in costume,” he said. “People come with the spirit of true faith.”

Thousands of children have sat on Wood’s lap over the years, and their affectionate inquiries range from world peace to helping a sick grandmother. Every now and then there is a surprise, like the 5-year-old who asked about a Lamborghini.

Santa Claus is one of more than 800 characters walking around. Queen Victoria, accompanied by Prince Albert, also mingles with the visitors.

She loves it very much. After all, this is London without bad weather or Brexit.

“I have no idea what you are talking about,” said the Queen when asked about the controversy of the 21st century. “I leave all politics to my ministers.”

It’s a full British experience on the 3.5 acre site. Visitors can see a show, try delicious treats like banger and mash, learn to fence, or play boot the cat. At Mr. Fezziwig’s dance party, you can practice waltzes, jigs and polkas with patient actors who know the steps.

When the afternoon turns into evening, there’s the popular adult-only show, the Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue.

Costumes, says fair manager Kevin Patterson, are “admired but not needed”.

“It’s both an experience and a visual feast,” says Patterson. “We want people to feel like they are in the story. We work very hard to ensure that people get carried away with the feeling and the aesthetic. “

Patterson, whose parents Ron and Phyllis started Mass, remembers the awe he felt as a child when he got lost wherever it is Christmas Eve.

There is so much to see – from sailors with eye patches to chimney sweeps with rotting teeth – trade show attendees forget their phones.

Scrooge never used one. Why should they do this?
