The three-part documentary series explores the US water crisis and will feature a number of prominent thought leaders and scientists including Michael S. Regan, head of the US Environmental Protection Agency; US Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey; Erik D. Olson, senior strategist at the Natural Resources Defense Council; and more

First episode available from April 21st

As issues of access to safe drinking water make headlines in the United States, ABC Owned Television Stations is partnering with ABC News and National Geographic to produce a three-part documentary series entitled “Our America: Trouble on Tap.” The first episode will air April 21 — in time for Earth Day on April 22 — on ouramericaabc.com and April 22 on Hulu. The trailer is available Here Now.

“Our America: Trouble on Tap” is a three-part documentary series — produced by Tracy J. Wholf, coordinating producer of the climate division at ABC News, and Justin Allen, executive producer at ABC Owned Television Stations — that explores pollution, climate change and aging infrastructure, which is gradually becoming an opportunity for more and more communities in undermine the United States’ access to free and potable drinking water. Over the past few decades, the safe and available drinking water that many Americans have taken for granted is now under threat. ABC Owned Television Stations and its data journalism division, whose data was used to show the severity of the contamination across the United States and the communities it affected, will work with ABC News and National Geographic to take viewers across America to witness this development to investigate crisis and offer solutions along the way.

“Our America: Trouble on Tap” is a powerful and thoughtful examination of the growing problems surrounding Americans’ access to safe drinking water. The series brings together the talent and expertise of the amazing teams at ABC Owned Television Stations, National Geographic and ABC News with national and local experts and leaders to ask what we can do to solve these problems and protect people’s health to protect across the country. I’m incredibly proud of the work these teams have done to bring this informative and timely topic to light,” said Debra OConnell, President, Disney Entertainment, Networks.

“Problems surrounding access to clean water vary across the country,” added Chad Matthews, president of ABC Owned Television Stations. “Our data journalism team examines information specific to local markets and works to tell stories that provide viewers with better context and understanding of how water – or lack of water – can affect them. We focus on specific problems, possible solutions, and tell the stories of those who experience it firsthand.”

The documentary series will consist of three hour-long episodes:

The first episode, “Life with Forever Chemicals” premiere April 21, takes a look at per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance contamination in North Carolina. This episode takes viewers to Cape Fear, North Carolina, often referred to as ground zero for PFAS water pollution, or water contaminated by toxic “forever” chemicals. For decades, more than 250,000 people’s drinking water supply was contaminated after a chemical company dumped toxic PFAS into the Cape Fear River. Years after the contamination first became public knowledge, the region continues to grapple with ongoing health problems, multiple lawsuits and the construction of costly water treatment plants as it grapples with decades of chronic exposure.

The second episode, “Chicago’s $8 Billion Water Problem”Premiered in July and examine lead pipes and water infrastructure in Chicago. More than 30 years after the federal government banned lead in plumbing, lead-based plumbing still carries water to millions of homes across America, including Chicago, which has one of the highest concentrations of lead plumbing in the country. With an estimated 400,000 lead pipes serving Chicago-area residents with water, “this is an $8 billion problem,” according to Chicago Water Commissioner Andrea Cheng. This episode examines the key water infrastructure issues to see if bills like Senator Cory Booker’s Water Infrastructure Funding Act and others will help ease some of the financial burden on communities and really help solve the many problems faced by… affecting residents, often in communities that are predominantly Black, Latino and Indigenous.

The third episode, “Drilling in California’s Water Crisis”Premiered in August and focus on the impact of the drought in California. As of late November 2022, the US Drought Monitor showed that nearly 85% of California was experiencing severe drought conditions or more. While current drought conditions have changed due to recent winter 2023 rainfall, California continues to experience statewide water emergencies as resources continue to vary based on current conditions. This episode takes viewers to Orosi, California to check in with a family whose water supply is due to expire by the state in four months. What happens to the water they use for drinking, cooking and bathing? California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Water Resilience and Storage Plan Under Review; and the process of subsidence, the gradual subsidence or subsidence of an area of land, is also studied, including the process in relation to water and the effects it can have on land.

The series will premiere April 22 linearly across eight ABC networks: ABC7/WABC-TV New York, ABC7/KABC-TV Los Angeles, ABC7/WLS-TV Chicago, 6abc/WPVI-TV Philadelphia, ABC7/KGO-TV San Francisco, ABC13/KTRK-TV Houston, ABC11/WTVD-TV Raleigh-Durham and ABC30/KFSN-TV Fresno. It will be available on 24/7 streaming platforms, 32 connected TV apps on streaming platforms Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku and April 22nd on Hulu.

ABC Owned Television Stations, which collectively reach 23% of all US television homes, are committed to producing high-impact content that represents diverse issues and voices in communities and newsrooms across the country. “Our America: Trouble on tap” will aim to educate audiences about the complex challenges facing citizens and legislators alike when it comes to accessing safe drinking water in the United States. The series will feature scientists, government officials and activists, and amplify the voices of a range of individuals and families directly affected by these water issues.

Honor was launched in April 2015 with an innovative take on the homecare model. What is different about them? On the one hand, Honor is big when it comes to technology, “there’s an app for that,” so to speak. But when you sit down to talk to co-founder Seth Sternberg about what makes his company so disruptive, you find that things are not that different at Honor. After all, home care is always about the people – and Honor is committed to people, from the customers they look after to the care professionals who make up their core care.

Let’s start with the big numbers: in the first year and a half of its business, Honor raised $ 62 million through two private funding campaigns. This is not an easy task for any homecare company as most companies often struggle to wrestle for investors and capital. Sternberg and his huge team of co-founders have done a great job convincing leading companies and companies to realize their vision for home care. Big names like Marc Andreessen ($ 15 million), Jeremy Stoppleman of Yelp, PayPal alumnus and Slide founder Max Levchin (combined $ 5 million), and Thrive Capital (lead investor in a Series B round of $ 42 million Winning dollars) is an exciting move for the company that also gives a great deal of legitimacy to Honor’s efforts. Sternberg said of Thrive Capital’s stake, which also funded health insurance startup Oscar, “We’re bringing people more health-focused, which is our goal as we grow.”

Honor’s bright corporate office in the Mission District of San Francisco is a hub of activity.

Honor stands behind this and invests in their caregivers known as Care Pros. Relying on the national average nurse wage of $ 9.70 an hour, Honor aims to pay nurses at least 10 percent more than the regional average – currently $ 16 an hour in the San Francisco area. When Honor started, Care Pros were contract workers, well paid but not involved in the company. In January, Honor made every Care Pro a W2 employee, offering training, paid sick leave, and employee compensation. CarePros are also eligible for stock options. Regarding the decision, Sternberg says: “As an entrepreneur you try to get started very quickly, but you don’t always know the right answer. We wanted to train our nurses, but we learned that we cannot train contractors in honors processes. So we made them W2 employees and can now train them and advance their careers. “

As part of the nurse education process, Honor has partnered with the National Parkinson Foundation and the American Cancer Society to provide additional training and certification to interested nurses in caring for patients with cancer or Parkinson’s disease. These certifications ensure that Care Pros are uniquely qualified to meet the challenges the job poses. Additionally, condition-based nursing skills enable Honor to better match qualified nurses with clients who need specific assistance.

Honor strives to match care professionals with families who share the same personalities and interests, and also offers specialized training for difficult-to-manage conditions. To this end, Honor created a software platform that sorts nurses by subject area, daily preference, and even pet allergies, in order to match nurses and patients as perfectly as possible. “You need to make sure that you are doing your job of tailoring caregivers to a client’s needs. When you’re dealing with hundreds of nurses, a human can’t do it efficiently, but a computer can. This platform saves us money, so it saves our customers money and enables us to pay our care pros better, ”says Sternberg.

Seth Sternberg – Pictures: Eric Millette

The Care Pro app, an outgrowth of this platform, enables Care Pros to manage their schedules by seeing which clients they match up with, clocking appointments in and out, keeping track of notes for the day (including the client’s family input via the Honor family app). Caregivers who may be continuing care can access the information, and their client’s family can view updates and share with relatives through an email facility monitored by Honor’s care managers. Honor is testing a feature of the app that enables simple wellness checks by Care Pros, including questions about sleeping, eating and bathroom patterns, so family members can see how their loved one is doing.

The Honor Family App is available to everyone who uses Honor’s services. Using the app, family members can schedule a visit, see who their caregiver is, pay their bill, rate a Care Pro, or connect directly with a living person.

To tell the story of honor is to tell the story of failure. Honor set out to shape home care differently – to shake up an industry – and for the most part, they succeeded. However, at the center of the story are still real people caring for patients in need of a human connection. Amidst all the discussions about Honor’s high-tech approach and concerns that their highly paid (and esteemed) care pros are unsustainable in the current marketplace, it is noticeable that Honor values their customers and tries to connect. And that is what home care is always about.

The story of a family

Carol lives in Orange County and takes care of her mother-in-law, Marguerite, who is 98 years old and has dementia and short-term memory loss. You have been an Honor customer since December 2015.

Carol realized that Marguerite needed more help than she could give after Marguerite started calling the police night after night, believing there were intruders in her home. The police told Carol that Marguerite needed a nurse.

Carol chose Honor after searching the internet for home care in the Glendale, California zip code. She entered her information into a search program and several companies reached out to her.

“I chose Honor after talking to Joy Maldonado. People have been so helpful and reassuring in finding the right caregiver, ”says Carol of the experience. “I really wanted something quick, but I wanted to make the right decision – because that was someone who took care of my mother.”

Carol said she chose Honor because she connected with the people there and never felt pressured to buy a product. “I just felt like Joy really cared when I spoke to her,” she says.

It was not easy to get a caregiver into Marguerite’s house. Dementia made her confused and combative at first; However, Carol says, “Grace is as cute as she can be. Mom went from ‘I don’t want her here, let it stop’ to ‘I love the people who come.’ “The turn in attitude can be attributed to Grace’s patience and understanding of Marguerite’s condition, she explains.

In addition to the health and wellness notes on the Family app, Grace leaves notes for Carol that include the songs Marguerite sings, a special touch that Carol cherishes. Carol doesn’t use the family app much other than reviewing the notes and rating the care professionals who look after Marguerite every day. Carol prefers to communicate with Honor’s home office, which is always an option for families.

For Carol, the best thing about Honor is that she can trust them with the safety and health of their mother-in-law. She knows that Marguerite is getting the best possible care. She says, “Before Honor, Mom was a mess. Now her fear has gone from sky high to calm. She sleeps through the night instead of walking up and down at home. “

It’s been over 13 months since the Kentucky police killed Breonna Taylor, and just under a year since Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd.

These high profile African American deaths, along with many others, sparked global protests and resulted in politicians and activists on the political left calling out their cities and towns. Counties to defuse their police stations.

More specifically, many of them are urging their elected officials to reallocate money in the police budget for more social service-oriented interventions in order to reduce the number of violent police encounters.

However, some cities in California – Sacramento, San Diego, and Los Angeles – are planning exactly the opposite.

From 2019 to 2020, Sacramento’s approved police budget increased by over $ 7 million. This year, the California capital will spend a record $ 165.8 million on police, an increase of $ 9.4 million.

However, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg says that by mid-2022 at least $ 10 million will be transferred from the police department to the community response department.

“I’m not in favor of defunding,” Steinberg told the Sacramento Bee. “There are some things that are part of running a city like collective bargaining and binding arbitration, and real needs for the police department.”

“I’m not going to limit myself to arguing that the measure of whether or not we invest aggressively in the community is whether or not we take the money directly from the police,” he continued.

In San Diego, the city plans to increase the police budget for the eleventh year in a row.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria proposed a 3% increase in police spending next year, meaning the police budget has increased a total of 52% since 2008.

The city is introducing this increase with a decrease in library hours to offset these costs.

San Diego City Council president Georgette Gómez said she planned to cut the police budget, but former Mayor Kevin Faulconer vetoed the move.

Gloria has expressed an interest in reducing police spending over time, but activists insist more needs to be done.

In Los Angeles, after two reports from the Los Angeles City Council and the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners warning the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for mistreating several protests over the past year, the LAPD has announced that it will raise the number Budgets around $ 67 million just to cope with the cost of reforming the protest response alone.

During various protests in the summer of 2020, the police arrested over 3,000 people without housing those arrested.

Police Chief Michel Moore admitted the protest reaction could have been handled better, but claimed that because of their training, most of his officers reacted the way they did.

“While there have been missteps and deficits in communication, leadership and control, particularly among senior executives, the vast majority of employees have performed admirably in their ongoing efforts to serve the city relentlessly, even in the face of antagonistic and violent crowds . ” Moore wrote a letter to the Board of Commissioners.

According to deputy chief Dominic Choi, this proposed budget increase for salaries and overtime will be used for advanced training.

The Police Commission has not moved on to the proposed budget and the LAPD needs city council approval before it can go into effect. On the flip side, in addition to the $ 67 million LAPD requested, Mayor Eric Garcetti has proposed a $ 50 million increase in the police budget, much to the horror of the members of the Los Angeles Black Lives Matter organization.

While some of these budget proposals are still under scrutiny and would not come into full effect until next year, they are far from disappointing police.

Despite a growing number of votes against it, more Golden State taxes are likely to be used to increase funding for “California’s Best.”

Honor, a home care and related technology company, has laid off 35 employees at its San Francisco headquarters, The Chronicle has learned.

Jessica Gilmartin, Honor’s chief marketing officer, said the layoffs were cross-departmental, including general administrative and personnel roles. Honor plans to continue expanding the nursing workforce, she added.

“We have recently shed a small number of jobs – less than 10% of our total workforce excluding nurses,” Gilmartin wrote in an email. “These targeted reductions were made in the normal course of business and we have no further comment on why we made these small adjustments to our workforce.”

Honor was founded in 2014 and has been providing services in Contra Costa County since 2015. Today the company provides non-medical carers in the Bay Area and in more than 800 cities in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Ohio, and Michigan. The company initially hired its own home care workers and in 2016 moved them from independent contractors to regular employees with benefits and stock options. This change prevented the controversy some companies are now facing over whether their workers are being misappropriated as contractors.

Honor has been providing software and services to independent home care agencies – the former competitors – since 2017. Honor provides these agencies with technology for nurse planning, training, and performance tracking, as well as a telephone support team. Gilmartin said Honor is directly employing thousands of these caregivers and is transferring them to Honor’s payroll as employees of outside agencies. Direct caregivers will continue to be hired as well.

According to CrunchBase, the company has raised a total of $ 115 million since its inception.

News website Axios previously reported that Japanese conglomerate SoftBank waived its commitment to invest $ 150 million in Honor in November after agreeing to provide funding last year.

Gilmartin declined to comment on the report, but said the company was “fully funded”. The company is supported by Naspers Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz and Thrive Capital. CEO Seth Sternberg previously started Meebo, a messaging app, and worked at Google.

A Russian hacker stole the identities of 22 of the 75 living recipients of the U.S. Congress ‘s Medal of Honor and used their stolen personal information to buy tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of Apple products and luxury watches on American military exchanges obtained from The Daily Beast.

The hot merchandise was then shipped to at least 20 different addresses in the US using ignorant scammers hired through seemingly innocuous online advertisements. The parcels were then forwarded to a Moscow suburb, where a training academy for a Russian spy agency is located. In total, the fraudster netted nearly $ 55,000 worth of stolen goods in around 50 separate transactions, according to investigators. The individual award winners whose personal data was used will not be named in the registration that was unsealed in December 2020.

The Congressional Medal of Honor is the country’s highest military award for valiant deeds and was first awarded in 1863. The existence of the identity theft investigation was previously unknown.

Poisoners, hackers, meddlers, spies: How Russian agents ran wild in 2020

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), U.S. military veterans are 76 percent more likely to be victims of identity theft than civilians. Last year, the FTC received 56,451 identity theft reports from members of the military with an average fraud loss of $ 600, roughly double the $ 311 civilians lost to fraudsters. The investigation into Congressional Medal of Honor identity theft began just months before the April 2014 hack by the U.S. Office of Human Resources Management (OPM) revealed the personal information, including Social Security numbers, of millions of troops and veterinarians nearly 15 years old were years. The authorities were unaware of the breach (OPM) until March 2015, giving the hackers about a year to operate undetected.

The Secret Service, which investigates financial crime in addition to its more well-known protective obligations, first learned of the Congressional Medal of Honor fraud in February 2014. The stolen personal information was used to establish fraudulent lines of credit through the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), a network of military-based retail stores operated by the Department of Defense. These accounts were then used to purchase expensive AAFES merchandise on behalf of the award winners, which were shipped to approximately 20 different addresses across the United States. From there the packages were forwarded to Balashikha, a town about 15 miles east of Moscow. The training academy of the Russian Federal Security Service, the successor to the KGB, is located there.

The story goes on

Most of these middlemen were recruited through websites aimed at Russian-speaking nationals.

“Have a nice day! My name is Maksim Znaeshev and I need energetic workers as packers,” said a job advertisement that appeared in January 2014. “This job is easy and at home. Your salary depends on the work done, usually it is it $ 20-50 per day depends on the number of orders in your state and the speed of your work. Only people are responsible with 2-3 hours a day for free and no bad habits! Email me: Maksim .Zna @ gmail.com… ”

Another requested résumé from applicants, pointing out that “the job is not difficult, nothing bulky and difficult to pack is not necessary. All states except Alaska. “

Kiril Motorin, a Maryland chimney sweep, was one of those who responded. He told The Daily Beast that he never spoke to anyone on the phone and never knew the name of the person he worked for.

Motorin, a Russian-speaking Israeli citizen, told intelligence agents who eventually turned up at his home that it was his job to “receive packages, most of which had different recipient names and were from different companies, and then forward the packages to other addresses.” both in the USA and in Russia. He said he received $ 20 a package and that all correspondence with his “employer” was via email.

The two created a paper path for the fraudulently received products, which Motorin shared with the investigators. This included copies of receipts from the U.S. Postal Service, which Motorin used to prove to his boss that he had actually shipped the goods as promised. Motorin also provided the Secret Service with email correspondence sent from his overseas contact stating that Motorin would be paid for his work through a PayPal account. In a message, the contact and Motorin discussed a shipment of Apple devices purchased through AAFES with the stolen identity of the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. The equipment was sent to Motorin’s Maryland home and had to be shipped back to Balashikha, the alleged fraudster said.

Sometimes Motorin was instructed to send the packages he received to UNEOL Post, a now defunct mail order company in Salem, New Hampshire. UNEOL owners Anastasia and Sergey Bulavchenko pleaded guilty of tax evasion in an unrelated credit card fraud case in 2017 and have reportedly returned to Russia, where they would await two years parole under the contract. The Daily Beast was unable to reach the couple for comment.

The investigators were able to connect the e-mail address used by the alleged fraudster to the registrar of three Russian carding forums where identity thieves buy and sell stolen personal data. According to online records, the email is linked to Evgenij Veremejchik from Sim, Russia.

Veremejchik is not listed as a defendant on federal court files, and the disposition of the Congressional Medal of Honor case is unknown.

For his part, Motorin says he has no idea what happened after being questioned by the secret service.

“He spoke to me once,” he said, referring to the interviewer, “and that’s it.”
