PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out 11 in seven innings, Bryce Harper hit a three-run home run and Kyle Schwarber added a solo shot to help the Philadelphia Phillies earn a four-game win over the San Francisco Giants by 6 :1 to complete victory on Monday.

Harper singled deep against Giants rookie Mason Black, spoiling the major league debut of the Giants right-hander, who pitched in the fifth inning against the team he rooted for as a kid.

“I hope he enjoyed it with his family, his teammates and everything else because there is only one debut,” Harper said.

This season's Phillies are winning as many as the ones Black cheered for as a child.

The major league-leading Phillies (25-11) won their sixth straight and have won 10 of 11 and 17 of 20 to open a three-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East.

The Phillies have also won 10 straight games at Citizens Bank Park, just two wins shy of matching the team record set in 2012. Philadelphia also set a franchise record with 11 consecutive wins against NL West opponents.

“I feel like we win in different ways every night. And it's a completely different player who makes it big, be it a hitter or a pitcher. It’s never the same guy, which is nice,” catcher JT Realmuto said. “There is not too much pressure on a player. We all feel like we play really well together and have a lot of fun, and the guys contribute every night.”

Harper hit a home run for the second straight game and his eighth hit of the season made it 4-0 against Black (0-1). Black made his major league debut in front of his parents, younger brother, girlfriend and numerous friends and family who came to watch him play against his favorite childhood team.

The 24-year-old Black – rated the seventh-best prospect in baseball according to MLB.com – was the Giants' third-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Lehigh University. Black recorded a 1-2-3 first inning that included strikeouts by JT Realmuto and Harper, the latter of which was caught in the 88 mph changeup.

Black allowed eight hits, five runs and three walks. He struck out four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Wheeler (4-3) showed the rookie how it's done. He rebounded from an 0-3 start – he allowed a total of six runs in his first three starts – to win his fourth straight start. Wheeler allowed one run, walked one and lowered his ERA to 1.64.

“Today Wheels did what Zack does every time he goes out there. It was fun to watch and keep us in the game,” Harper said.

Matt Strahm pitched a scoreless eighth and Orion Kerkering pitched the ninth to complete the five.

With shortstop Trea Turner out for at least six weeks with a left hamstring strain, his replacements are starting to fill the void. Bryson Stott moved from second base to shortstop and snagged a great grounder from Wilmer Flores in the first to set up an inning-ending double play. Whit Merrifield started second and gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the fourth.

Harper had a three-run toss in the fifth and Nick Castellanos, who hit 37 doubles last season, got his first hit of the year later in the inning for a 5-0 lead.

Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm went 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at 18 games.

HUGE BREAK

The Giants lost for the sixth time in seven games, falling 6-14 on the road. They lost two of three games in Boston and ended their 10-game trip with three games at Colorado, the only team behind San Francisco in the NL West. Maybe there will be a Mile High fortune change for the Giants — they are 18-8 at Coors Field with a plus-51 run differential since 2021.

“We need to clean up,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We have to play better. We left home one game under .500 and not playing very well. I thought (the road) could be a pretty good spot for us since we hadn't been playing well. And now we’re playing terribly.”

NEXT

The Giants send LHP Kyle Harrison (2-1, 3.79 ERA) to the mound against Rockies RHP Dakota Hudson (0-5, 5.93) on Tuesday.

The Phillies stay at home and open a two-game set against Toronto on Tuesday. They will send LHP Cristopher Sánchez (1-3, 3.68) to the mound against Blue Jays RHP José Berríos (4-2, 1.44).

SAN FRANCISCO — Ryne Nelson struck out six in seven innings in his strongest start of the season, Ketel Marte added two hits and homered for the second consecutive game, and the Arizona Diamondbacks held off the surging Giants 5-2 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep.

Christian Walker extended his career-high hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI double for Arizona. Alek Thomas had three hits for the Diamondbacks, whose lead in the NL West had been trimmed to 1 ½ games over the Giants after San Francisco won the first two games of the series.

Arizona set a franchise record with its 79th consecutive game without being shut out, the ninth-longest streak in the majors since 1998.

“We felt like we needed to respond to a couple of tough games where we let some things get away from us that we were able to control,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “The group walked in here today very focused.”

J.D. Davis and Luis Matos each had two hits for San Francisco. It was the Giants’ second loss in 14 games and prevented them from completing their fourth series sweep in the last six tries.

San Francisco scored once in the eighth and appeared to load the bases on Patrick Bailey’s infield single. But Blake Sabol, who walked earlier in the inning, rounded second and headed for third before realizing Davis was still there. Sabol was tagged out going back to second.

The Giants threatened again in the ninth but Scott McGough got Thairo Estrada to ground out with two runners on to end it for his sixth save.

“We definitely knew we needed to take one from them,” Nelson said. “The team just came out and played really well today.”

Nelson (4-4), making his second start against the Giants this season, was much crisper than in May, when San Francisco got to him for four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Diamondbacks right-hander was stellar the second time, allowing three hits and one run. Nelson retired 14 straight after giving up a double and walk to back-to-back batters in the first.

The seven innings was Nelson’s longest outing this season and matched his career high set last Sept. 5 against San Diego.

“That’s what I’m trying to do, trying to prove that I can get deep in games,” Nelson said. “I’ve been trying to keep the pitch count down to have that opportunity.”

Marte singled off the brick wall in right in the first inning, then came around on Walker’s double into the gap in right-center. His home run off Tristan Beck in the eighth was Marte’s 14th in 73 games this season, two more than he had in 137 games last season.

“He’s an elite player that’s just growing and learning every day,” Lovullo said of Marte, who has homered in four of the past six games. “We’re seeing the on-base percentage climb because he’s swinging at good pitches. When you’re doing that, you’re going to drive baseballs.”

Thomas doubled against Anthony DeSclafani (4-7) and scored on McCarthy’s single in the second to make it 2-0.

Nelson struck out Sabol swinging with runners at the corners to end the first, then got Sabol to line out to end the sixth with two on. That came one batter after Davis singled in Estrada to cut the gap to 2-1. Estrada reached on an error by Arizona catcher Gabriel Moreno after Estrada struck out swinging.

Geraldo Perdomo had an RBI single in the ninth for the Diamondbacks.

Andrew Chafin allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning after replacing Nelson to begin the eighth.

DeSclafani allowed two runs and five hits in six innings. He had three strikeouts but remained winless since May 29.

Overturned pickoff

DeSclafani made a quick pick-off throw to first base to get McCarthy for the final out of the second. McCarthy was initially ruled safe by first base umpire and crew chief Alan Porter but the Giants challenged and the call was overturned by replay.

The Giants challenged another call in the seventh inning but were denied by a video review.

Ttrainer’s room

Giants: RHP Luke Jackson was placed on the 15-day Injured List with a low back strain. Jackson left Saturday’s game because of the injury. … RHP Ross Stripling returned from a rehab assignment and was reinstated from the 15-day IL. … 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr., who was also pulled from Saturday’s game because of lower back tightness, was held out of the lineup as precaution.

Up next

Diamondbacks: Lovullo has not named a starter for Tuesday’s series opener against the Rays in a matchup of division leaders in Arizona.

Giants: Manager Gabe Kapler has not named a starter for Tuesday’s game in Toronto, although the team has used an opener for this turn in the rotation for the previous five weeks.

NEW YORK (AP) — Justin Verlander pitched seven steady innings for his first victory in nearly six weeks and slumping rookie Francisco Álvarez hit the first of three quick homers that powered the New York Mets past the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on Saturday.

Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor launched back-to-back shots as the Mets went deep three times in a span of four batters against Anthony DeSclafani (4-8) in the third.

Tommy Pham added an RBI double off Sean Manaea in the fourth, and New York (37-46) opened July with a much-needed win after going 6-19 in its previous 25 games.

The 40-year-old Verlander (3-4) gave up five hits, struck out six and didn’t allow an earned run for his 247th victory and first since May 21 against Cleveland.

The only run the Giants scored came on Thairo Estrada’s double-play grounder in the seventh following a throwing error by first baseman Pete Alonso — his second in two days.

San Francisco (46-37) fell to 14-5 in its last 19 games dating to June 11.

Lars Nootbaar homered for St. Louis, which fell to a 34-48, its worst 82-game start since 1990. Nootbar hit a first-inning homer off opener Ian Hamilton as the Yankees went with a bullpen game because of Friday’s rainout.

Michael King (2-4) allowed one hit while pitching scoreless relief over a season-high 3 1/3 innings. Wandy Peralta, Tommy Kahnle and Clay Holmes followed with an inning each.

Amed Rosario lined a two-run single in the third. Andrés Giménez chased Stroman (9-6) with an RBI single in a four-run sixth, and the Guardians bounced back after getting pounded 10-1 the previous night.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Connor Joe hit a home run against his former team and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated San Francisco 2-1 Tuesday night, ending a five-game losing streak against the Giants.

The Pirates moved back to .500 (27-27) after losing for the first time since going 1-2. Pittsburgh won 7-19 after starting the season 20-8.

Joe, playing for San Francisco in 2019, hit a home run against John Brebbia in the first inning. Michael Conforto leveled the game with an RBI single late in the inning.

Pittsburgh got the go in the fifth, helped by a Giants error. With Rodolfo Castro first and an out, Jason Delay hit a single to the left. The ball bounced past left fielder Mitch Haniger, moving Castro to third and Delay to second.

Sean Manaea delivered a wild pitch that allowed Castro to score.

Josh Palacios followed up with a groundball for the first time, but Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. threw Delay to the plate. The call was disputed and confirmed after review.

Manaea (2-3) allowed just one undeserved run to relief in four innings.

Pirates starter Johan Oviedo struggled with his command but kept the Giants on one run in 4 1/3 innings. He walked five and knocked out five.

Dauri Moreta (2-1) relieved Oviedo in the fifth round and got the win after a scoreless inning.

David Bednar ended the team in the ninth round with two strikeouts and his tenth save from eleven chances.

San Francisco went 1-for-8 with runners in the points position after going 9-for-18 in Monday’s win. The Giants left nine runners on base.

ROSTER MOVEMENTS

The Giants reinstated RHP Luke Jackson from the 60-day injured list and selected INF David Villar to the Triple-A Sacramento. INF Matt Beaty was selected for action.

Jackson signed a two-year, $11.5 million deal with San Francisco in January after missing all of last season with the Braves due to surgery by Tommy John.

TRAINING ROOM

Pirates: 1B Carlos Santana missed his second straight game with a lumbar muscle strain but could return as soon as Wednesday.

Giants: C Joey Bart (left groin strain) led bases and could start rehab this weekend. …OF Joc Pederson (bruised right hand) started his shot development from the tee off the tee.

NEXT

Pirates RHP Mitch Keller (6-1, 3.01) is aiming for his fourth consecutive win in Wednesday afternoon’s rubber game. Keller has batted at least eight batters in six straight appearances. The Giants countered with LHP Alex Wood (1-0, 3.51), who limited the Brewers to one run in 5 2/3 innings for their first win of the season on Friday.
