San Francisco’s Pier 39 celebrated its 45th anniversary Saturday with a nighttime drone light show and other festivities.

Pier 39 is a must-see attraction for many visitors along San Francisco’s waterfront.

There is a drone light show that is expected to start at 9 p.m. Along with music and a DJ set, there were street performers at the pier that’s known for its shops, attractions and restaurants, including a newer offering, taco cantina.

While other parts of city are still dealing with the struggles, foot traffic here is moving and the sea lions are always a popular stop.

Christie Smith has more in the video above.

After Cincinnati scored five runs in the second half to take a 5-1 lead, Cincinnati’s offense largely sat still for the remainder of the game. But the pitching team took control, with the bullpen knocking out the home side in the last four innings to secure a one-run win.

— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) June 14, 2023

It was also the Reds’ ninth win in their last 11 away games. The Reds are aiming for the three-game win on Wednesday.

As this final article goes online, the Reds are now just a game and a half behind second-seeded Milwaukee, who blew a ninth-inning lead tonight in a 7-5 loss to Minnesota. Cincinnati is currently three games behind first-seeded Pittsburgh, who tied the sixth inning with the Cubs in Chicago at 10:45 p.m. ET. Also, Cincinnati is just two games behind San Francisco for third and final spot in the National League wildcard playoffs.

The offensive

Elly De La Cruz took the lead in the second inning with a walk, stole second, and ended up in third with a bad throw. Spencer Steer then hit a left to equalize 1-1. An RBI double from Kevin Newman made it 2-1, Stuart Fairchild followed with a single to make it 3-1. TJ Friedl then hit a single to the right to give Newman a 4-1 lead. Fairchild and Friedl then double stole third and second place respectively. Then Matt McLain went to load the bases with an out. Jonathan India emerged as number two into right field. As De La Cruz led for the second time in the inning, a wild pitch from Jordan scored Lyle’s run number five.

India and De La Cruz, the last two outs of the second inning, were the first of 14 straight Reds Lyles pulled back in five runs in the second inning after the Cincinnati riot.

Royals substitute Jackson Kowar extended that streak to 16 before dishing out a two-out walk to Friedl in the seventh set. India’s eighth-inning walk was Cincinnati’s only other baserunner of the night.

Friedl’s two goals got the Reds batsmen on their toes.

“This team is full of grinders. We will find a way to win.”

TJ Friedl commended the Bullpen and his teammates for tonight’s win.

— Bally Sports Cincinnati (@BallySportsCIN) June 14, 2023

The pitching

Brandon Williamson gave up an unearned run in the first half, largely due to a tapper from Bobby Witt Jr. to Williamson’s right, which he hurried to throw first. The toss bounced in first place, resulting in the runners finishing in first and third place and each having an out. RJ Melendez then hit a deep, sacrificial flight to the right that would have been the third out had it not been for Williamson’s miss.

Second-inning doubles from Edward Olivares and Matt Duffy scored KC’s second run and left the Reds 5-2 after two. A two-run home run by Witt brought KC to 5:4 in the third round.

Williamson went through the first five innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Significantly, he gave no walks.

Right-back Daniel Duarte, who was called back from Louisville earlier in the day, was eliminated from the team in play six after seven pitches in his first major league appearance since April 2022.

Ian Gibaut came on at the end of the seventh, and three of the first four batters he faced entered the game with two walks and a hit batsman. That prompted manager David Bell to call in Lucas Sims, who responded by punching Nick Pratto and swinging Salvador Perez.

— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) June 14, 2023

Sims then only allowed a two-out single in the eighth game against the heart of the KC ranks. Sims was definitely the Reds’ pitching star of the game.

Alexis Diaz came on ninth and was eliminated by the Royals with his 16th save.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Portland men’s tennis team earned a road split over the weekend of the West Coast Conference with Saturday’s 4-2 win over San Francisco at the Goldman Tennis Center. The Pilots move to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in league play while the Dons fall to 2-13 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Portland secured the colon with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Sema Pankin and Eleftherios Neos defeated Nil Giraldez and Johan Garpered 6-3, and then Issa Yoshida and Cade Fernando secured it in a 6-4 win against Stevie Gould and Davide Cortimiglia in 3rd place.

The singles games were extremely close, but Pankin gave the Pilots a boost with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Giraldez at the top of the lineup. USF countered with a win in 2nd place before the last four games were all over three sets.

Nicolas Ocana made a comeback in 3rd with a 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 win over Gould. USF took their second point when Nikola Kuraica overtook Nikolas Tvedt in a three-setter for 4th. Portland’s Maxim Groysman then provided the winning point with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 loss to 5th-ranked Cortimiglia.

The final singles game between Issa Yoshida and Luka Kalenic was abandoned in the third set.

“Today was a little gut check,” said Portland coach Aaron Gross. “We didn’t play well yesterday or fight particularly well. We still didn’t play great today but we were very gritty. Sema is on the right track and had a solid win in 1st place. Our other two wins were lost in the first set and we were fighting back for wins. Ocana played so hard to come back from the 6-0 loss of the first game and Max managed the clincher again. Sometimes the most valuable and meaningful victories are the ones that you have to fight and fight your way to. Today’s victory was very hard fought and well deserved.”

Portland returns home next weekend to host the Loyola Marymount Lions on Thursday and the Pepperdine Waves on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. with live coverage available on PortlandPilots.com.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Wednesday night the young Alameda County Sheriff’s recruit who was killed last month in Oakland was remembered in San Francisco, where he lived and went to college.

A big turnout of family and friends – with special recognition for David Nguyen.

San Francisco Sheriff’s Deputies saluting pictures of David Nguyen, a 28-year-old Alameda County Sheriff’s recruit who was killed on Interstate 580 in Oakland as he drove home to San Francisco after a day of training.

“Just seeing the community get together for a cause, for my brother, that keeps me going,” said David’s sister Barbara. She was there to speak along with a number of others, including the San Francisco Sheriff, to honor Nguyen Wednesday night where he was so close to graduating at City College of San Francisco.

RELATED: Slain Alameda Co. Sheriff recruit honored, casket transported to Colma funeral home

Alan Wong is a trustee at City College of San Francisco who served alongside Nguyen in the National Guard.

“With the support of David’s teachers, I’m moving forward with a proposal to have City College confer him an honorary degree in liberal arts and sciences to help him and his family complete his academic degree at City College,” said Wong.
Nguyen was just one unit away from a degree. His girlfriend Shanice Vaughn read a journal of his where he vowed to do better in school.

RELATED: ‘We were like best friends’: Sister of slain Alameda Co. Sheriff recruit shares memories of his life

“My solution is to enter City College with a completely different mindset. The mindset to learn, progress, and most of all not cheat myself out of an education again,” said Vaughn.

David’s family and friends are still struggling with his loss but were happy to share David’s memories on cold city evening, with his mother, who has been hit particularly hard.

Barbara says she will remember the good times.

VIDEO: Alameda Co. Sheriff’s recruit fatally shot while driving home from work on I-580 in Oakland

“He took care of me at a very young age and he would force me to do everything with him either working out, Boy Scouts, all these things. I didn’t really appreciate it when I was younger but when I look back on it now, man he was a great big brother,” says Nguyen.

Deputies tell us there is still a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of David’s killer. As of right now, no arrests have been made.
