SSFAC opened the season this past Sunday @ El Camino High School on a beautiful sunny afternoon. It was a hard fought intense battle that saw SSFAC & JASA RWC Reserves finish with a 2-2 tie.

SSFAC fell behind early, but got on the scoreboard when Adam Snowdon sent a ball to Omeed Miraftab-Salo, who found Ryan Waterston with a perfect pass which he converted to make it a 1-1 game. SSFAC took the lead early in the 2nd half when Snowdon again getting an assist when he sent a cross into the area for Michael Wheaton to head home for a 2-1 lead

JASA countered with a goal of their own shortly after, and even though South City applied great pressure till the end, the match ended at full time all level at 2-2

Next up for the team is a match on the road as they travel to Santa Clara next Saturday Sept. 30th to face long time rival Santa Clara Sporting. Kick off is 4:30pm @ Reed & Grant Sports Complex

This is a truly unique property with deep ties to Flagstaff’s history. The 10ac equine training facility is a family owned and operated compound on two separate parcels. Parcel B is 2.53 acres with a NEW 8 stall barn with tack & feed rooms, multiple paddocks to stall up to 22 horses on flat and usable land that includes a regulation jumping/roping arena. Included on this parcel is a newly remodeled 2 beds, 2 bath manufactured home. Parcel C is 7.38 acres with 400-year-old Pines surrounding the 2,353sqft 1929 4 beds, 3 bath Malapai Stone main house with a completely remodeled primary suite with private bath, walk-in closet and separate entrance from the house or front patio in it’s final stages of completion. Also included is a two bed, one bath 1,293 sq ft 1976 authentic Log Cabin guest house built by previously used property owner famous Arizona Cowboy Artist, Bill Owen, as an art studio. The C/A (logo for Cowboy Artist Association) in flagstone at the foot of the fireplace makes this log home truly special. A must see 1890’s post & beam barn has been carefully restored and repurposed into a Party Barn complete with stage, sound booth and dry bar. Also included is a remodeled rustic Bunk House, separate Guest Bath/ Shower House, additional storage buildings and a 4 horse stud barn. This Beautiful Farm located under the picturesque San Francisco Peaks was originally homesteaded by Ernest Burris in the late 1800’s & used as a cattle ranch & potato farm. Due to farming, the property is virtually rock free for any horse or livestock operation. The farm sits on the aptly named Burris Lane, a paved and maintained county road close to downtown Flagstaff. Connected to the Doney Park Water system and fully fenced and cross fenced, this property has it all. See Docs for more details.

Average cost: “The global average cost of a roof replacement, likewise anchored to my experience, is roughly $7,500, with many consumers spending between $4,000 and $10,000,” Hone says. But he admits that your roof type—as well as the type of asphalt shingles you pick—can make a difference. A slate roof, for instance, costs around $20 per square foot, which can be $40,000 on average. To determine what your home might need, check a roofing calculator.

“A typical chimney maintenance fee ranges from $800 to $2,500, with higher chimneys of 10 feet or over costing more than $4,500—which is worth every coin, since we are talking about house security, which no individual would want to compromise,” Hone says. You’ll also want to call in a chimney sweep to clean out the fireplace before you start using it again, which can range between $100 to $200.

5. Waterproofing the basement

You may be accustomed to housing problems starting at the top, but they can also originate from the bottom. Water in your basement can result in mold and also damage the home’s foundation. During the home inspection, Green recommends paying special attention to any water damage or cracks, noting that these issues need to be fixed ASAP to avoid additional damage. “You can also check landscaping for water pockets and sloped land, both of which can indicate excess water,” he adds.

The basement’s sump pump is the first line of defense since it prevents excess water from building up in the home, and Green says it should be inspected for any type of damage such as broken float switches and faulty check valves. “Be sure to also install a backup in case of a power outage and monitor your sump pump’s system to make sure everything is working properly,” he says. “Schedule annual maintenance or checkups of your sump pump to catch problems before they cause major damage and floods.”

Another thing to consider: Former owners may not know (or have kept up with) the last time sump pumps or septic systems were serviced. “It’s best to always err on the side of caution and proactively check things out after getting the keys to the home,” Green says. “If that older home doesn’t have window-well covers, consider having one installed to protect basement windows and stop leaks before they start.”

Average cost: It’s almost impossible to project how much waterproofing will cost, as it varies greatly per project. According to research data on Angi, basement waterproofing can range between $2,300 and $7,576, costing $4,920 on average. Something more extensive, like installing a new drainage system, can cost upward of $14,000.

6. Updating or restoring windows

Windows are an essential way to keep your home protected from the outside, and when you have an old home with single-pane windows, it can quickly lead to heat and cold transference. This transfer allows heat to escape during the winter and cool air to leak during the summer, ultimately making your HVAC system, if you have one, work harder to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. By repairing windows right away, you can help to decrease your utility bills and the strain on your HVAC system.

— Jon Witkop

EUREKA, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, April 26, 2023 /EINPresswire.com/ — Jon Witkop and Michelle Rowland of the Eureka office of Corcoran Icon Properties have just completed the completion of the historic Southport Landing mansion at 444 Phelan Road in beautiful Loleta, California. listed . Just five miles north of Eureka, the property is near the southern waterway of Humboldt Bay.

Charles Heney was the original owner of the land and it was part of his farming operations. Heney had come to San Francisco from New Brunswick with the gold rush of 1849 and then ended up in Eureka in 1855. He opened a general store and became a postmaster before buying Southport Ranch. His dream included developing Southport as a town and as a shipping point for the farming community. He built a railroad in 1885 to facilitate the transportation of goods to market. However, weather and circumstances were against the plan, and he was out of business by 1885. His son William, proprietor of the Humboldt Times in Eureka, moved to the area and completed the Colonial Revival house down a country lane, moving to Southport in 1901 with his large family.

The home sits on 2.84 acres with majestic views of the bay, pastureland and cypress forests. The three-story, 5,400-square-foot home includes eight bedrooms, four bathrooms, a study, recreation room, dining room, kitchen, laundry room, and living room — a total of 20 rooms, all with stunning views of the dramatic surroundings. Like a step back in time, the graceful staircase, the shiny patina of the wooden floors, the lighting fixtures, the detailed fittings and the spacious veranda reflect all the luxury and history of the building.

As the family grew and moved on, the house fell into disrepair for some time. Then, in 1987, a new owner restored the mansion, bringing it back to its former glory with modern wiring, plumbing, and sheetrock. Subsequent owners renovated it and opened it as a bed and breakfast in 1997.

Southport Landing is a registered historic home on the shores of Humboldt Bay, built around the turn of the century. Once a haven for weary ship captains, this early colonial residence was the center of the community of Southport, a railroad and shipping port that connected the Eel River basin to San Francisco. Now hiking, kayaking, biking, bird watching and beach combing are all easily accessible.

“Southport Landing is almost magical in both its setting and its design,” commented Witkop, Listing Agent. “It is a timeless classic property that can transport you to another time and beautiful dimension.” The home is listed at $1,275,000. Witkop can be reached at 707.515.6683 or jon.witkop@corcoranicon.com. And Rowland can be reached at 707.599.9446 or michelle.rowland@corcoranicon.com.

If you’re thinking about purchasing an old house, there is some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you can probably purchase it for a lot less than a turnkey home. The bad news is that it may not be quite as easy to create a dream bathroom or remodel the kitchen in a historical home. Even common plumbing problems can be more complex, not to mention pricey.

Historical homes often have character that can be amped up with a fresh coat of paint or a stylish laundry room update to bring the home into the 21st century. But charm is not the only thing that goes hand in hand with a piece of history. Beware that there are hidden costs of buying an old house, and often these not-so-fun repairs are critical. Here, eight home-improvement projects that can sneak up on you, as well as what to expect when it comes to repair costs.

1. Electrical work

If the house was built before WWII, your home could have knob and tube wiring, an outdated two-wire system that does not contain a grounding wire. Not only is it incompatible with three-prong appliances, but the wires themselves could have worn insulation and be in direct contact with wood beams and walls.

This is not a DIY project. Look for a licensed and insured electrician to update your wiring and breaker boxes. “Those who are not experienced may end up causing further issues as well as injury,” says Dan Mock, vice president of operations of Mister Sparky. When you have someone come in to give you an estimate, make sure to ask about updating outlets and switches, as loose wires are a fire hazard.

Average cost: The cost of electrical services varies, and Mock says it will depend on what you’re doing. “For example, the cost for lighting upgrades typically ranges from $200 to $5,000,” he says. If your electrician has to work on electrical boxes and grounding, be prepared to spend at least $5,000 more. Installing smart home technology is another pricey upgrade, and Mock says this alone could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to up to $5,000: “There is no way of telling exactly how much certain services will cost, since this is dependent on severity of the service and what needs to be done [in your home].”

2. Plumbing

Galvanized pipes are made of steel and have a protective inner coating made of zinc. But over time, water wears out the zinc and causes the pipes to corrode and rust on the inside, says Michael Green, chief operating officer for Benjamin Franklin Plumbing.

“To see if you have galvanized pipes, you can scratch the outside of the pipe with a flathead screwdriver; if it’s galvanized steel, the scratch will appear gray in color—and magnets will also stick to galvanized pipes,” Green says. If you do have galvanized pipes, he says replacing them is the best solution. “While it’s a costly process, it’s a long-term solution that you can count on.” One reason it’s so costly: The experts will have to cut walls and ceilings open to gain access to the pipes. “Leave enough budget to address any plaster walls that need to be replaced, as plaster is more common in older homes than in new ones,” Green says. Since this project will likely take several days, you might want to find a place to stay. After all, water will be shut off.

Average cost: You can expect to pay between $7,000 and $15,000, says Green, who notes that this broad price range is based on a variety of factors. “Everything from your region of the country to what’s involved in opening up your walls to sewer considerations will determine the amount you’ll pay,” he says. “Based on current market volatility and trends, pricing is on a case-by-case basis and is determined by time and materials.”

3. Gutters

Gutters that leak or haven’t been cleaned in a while can cause roof rotting, saturate the home, and put extra pressure on the foundation and the basement walls. This can lead to cracks, leaks, and floods, Green explains.

Examine the gutters (or have them professionally examined) to ensure that they drain properly so water doesn’t pool at the base of the house. “Most gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year, and older homes with lots of trees around may need to be cleaned more frequently,” Green notes.

If you feel comfortable getting on top of the ladder, Green advises wearing sturdy and comfortable shoes, along with gloves. Then, he says, you should place a ladder on level ground and lock the ladder in place. “Hang an empty bucket from the top of the ladder to collect the debris you’re going to remove, and use a trowel or hand rake to clean the gutters; once everything has been removed, hose the gutters down.” As you’re hosing the gutters, make sure the water drains and doesn’t pool.

Average cost: Cleaning gutters yourself is not expensive at all, but you may pay around $300 for a service. If you end up having water damage, Green says you will need to call a licensed professional to assess the situation and guide you through the work that needs to be done to remove any moisture. “Older homes are also more prone to having plaster walls, which are expensive to replace should professionals find water behind them,” he says, adding that pricing may vary. If you have to replace all the gutters, especially in a historical home which may have specialty gutters, like half-round gutters versus the more modern K-style, an estimate can run as much as $20,000.

4. Roof and chimney

Roofs deteriorate over time and eventually need to be replaced. The older the home is, the more likely the roof will need to be replaced—or at least repaired. Some historical homes have ultra-durable slate roofs, which can last 80 years, but if your house is 100 years old…well, you may need to upgrade right about now. “You could be able to install additional layers of shingles based on how many strata have already been laid, or you could have to rip up all of the roof covering and start afresh,” says Brian Hone, owner and CEO of Big Easy Roofing, a roofing and general contractor based in New Orleans.

In addition, as old buildings settle, Hone says chimneys can tilt or fracture. “Issues might vary from the possibility of the chimney collapsing to an elevated risk of a wildfire.” What’s more, as stonework weathers over the decades (especially in regions with harsh winters and other inclement weather), the surface of an old chimney deteriorates.

If you have-single pane windows, Michael DiMartino, senior vice president of installations at Power Home Remodeling, headquartered in Chester, Pennsylvania, recommends replacing them with double-paned windows. “Look for windows with argon gas between the panes and a low-E coating, which can help to reflect the sun,” he says. “You also want to look for a rating, or U-factor, of .30 or lower—the lower the number, the more energy-efficient the window.” DiMartino notes that all of the energy-efficient windows they install have a rating of .27.

Some historical homes have gorgeous hardwood windows that look dilapidated but can be restored to their full glory.

Average cost: For an economy, or basic, replacement, DiMartino says you can expect to pay between $400 to $5,000 per unit. “However, for an energy-efficient, premium product with professional installation, pricing can be upward of $2,500 per unit.” That might sound high, but he says an upfront investment can help you save substantially in the long term. “For example, energy-efficient window replacements might cost you hundreds of dollars (for a single unit), but they’ll last for 35 to 40 years, or for a lifetime, with the right warranty,” DiMartino says. “And they can save you significantly in heating and air-conditioning bills.”

7. Pests

When purchasing an old home, know that it may come with residents who won’t be moving out when you move in: pests. “Wood-destroying insects are most concerning,” says Atlanta-based Frank Meek, technical services manager at Rollins, which owns Orkin and several other pest-control companies. He notes that these are especially unwelcome because they can jeopardize construction components, which can be further weakened by the the constriction and expansion of materials due to weather changes.

Meek advises that you look out for the following:

Termites, which can damage wood and wood products.

Overwintering insects, like cluster flies, boxelder bugs, carpet beetles, stink bugs, and lady beetles that come in to avoid the winter weather.

Carpenter ants that build nests in soft, damp, or dead wood.

Vertebrate pests, like rodents, birds, and other urban wildlife. They can damage the structure, chew electrical lines, and introduce other pests, like fleas, ticks, and mites.

Have your home thoroughly inspected by a trained pest management professional. In addition, seal cracks and holes around the home’s perimeter, and ensure you have proper drainage to avoid standing water.

Average cost: Because each pest situation is unique—ranging from an unwelcome guest to the severity of an infestation—it can be hard to determine a general average. Exterminating ants, for instance, can range from $100 for fire ants to $500 for carpenter ants. A rat fumigation, on the other hand, can cost you upward of $6,000.

8. HVAC system

An older home might face several heating and cooling challenges. “It might not have enough space to have a central air-conditioning system and vents,” says Mark Dawson, executive vice president of Trade Brands at Authority Brands. Also, he says, the home may not be designed to handle that much energy.

There are several ways to tackle heating and cooling problems. “You can have the electrical system of the home updated to be able to power a whole-house HVAC system,” Dawson says. Another option is to hire a team of professional contractors and technicians to lower the ceiling of the home so you can install ducts. However, he warns that both of these options are expensive, will require city permits, and could take anywhere from weeks to months to complete. “Additionally, when you make these types of upgrades, you run the risk of damaging historical features, including original floors, wood trims, and plaster,” he explains, adding that lowering the ceilings will also reduce the amount of storage space you have throughout the home.

However, Dawson says there’s a third option: Have an HVAC professional install a ductless split system. So what’s that? “A ductless split system is a heater and air conditioner not attached to ducts that transfers air to a room or portion of your home,” he says. “Ductless split systems are a great option for those with older homes and are predominantly inexpensive to install.” In addition, Dawson says they’re compact, energy-efficient, and provide more security than a window unit.

Average cost: A ductless split system can range anywhere from $950 to $4,100, Dawson says, and the cost will depend on how many units are being installed and the labor involved. “It also depends on the region you’re located in. The price can go up to $5,600 to $10,000 depending on how much of the home will be heated and cooled with the ductless system.” For high-efficiency models, the price can go up to $12,000. Installing a new furnace is $2,806 to $6,785, plus $150 to $500 per hour for installation, according to Angi.

In seiner Rezension vom 19.

Prifti starb 2011.

Ten Years After“ zu machen.

Trotzdem: „Ich liebe Worcester.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that she will step away from Democratic leadership next Congress marked a transformational moment on Capitol Hill Thursday, with liberals and even some Republicans offering praise and kudos to the California congresswoman.

In a highly anticipated address from the House floor, Pelosi, who has led the Democratic caucus for 20 years, said she will continue serving her San Francisco district in the lower chamber but will pass the leadership torch to a “new generation” of Democrats, many of whom have been waiting in the wings for a shakeup among the caucus’s top brass.

The House chamber erupted in a standing ovation when Pelosi, dressed in a white suit, wrapped up her speech.

A swarm of Democrats lined up to hug the outgoing Speaker following her remarks. Some even recorded the moment on their cellphones from the floor. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) brought his young daughter to witness the occasion.

“She’s a historical figure. She’ll be one of the top people in American history,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), a close ally of Pelosi. “This is a tough, strong, smart, courageous woman that knows how to listen to everybody, make a decision, [and] implement.”

“She’s just such a venerated leader,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) said. “It was so dignified, you know, the way that she carried and carries herself in such a dignified fashion. She went on her own terms, and I think there’s just nothing but respect there for her.”

Few Republicans ventured to the House floor to witness the speech from Pelosi, who has long been villainized in GOP messaging. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) attended — and participated in the standing ovation after her speech.

But House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who this week was nominated by Republicans to replace Pelosi as Speaker next year when the party controls the House, did not attend and said shortly after that he did not watch her speech.

“I had meetings. But normally the others would do it during votes. I wish — she could have done that. I could have been there,” said McCarthy, who once joked that it would be hard to not hit Pelosi with the speaker’s gavel when he took it over.

The GOP leader and the Speaker have a hostile relationship, particularly during and since the Trump era. Pelosi called McCarthy a “moron” after he criticized the mask mandate she instituted on the house floor during the coronavirus pandemic.

“They’ve both [had] quite a career of how many decades they’ve been working here through,” McCarthy said of Pelosi and Hoyer on Thursday. “It’s a whole new generation for the Democrats.”

Pelosi’s historic reign in Democratic leadership began in 2002 when she assumed the role of House minority whip. She later served as chair of the House Democratic Caucus and minority leader, but will be most remembered for her ascension to the Speakership in 2007, when she became the first woman to secure the gavel.

Throughout her eight years as Speaker, Pelosi helped usher in a number of massive legislative accomplishments: she oversaw the passage of the Affordable Care Act, helped authorize trillions of dollars of emergency relief during the pandemic and pushed through this year’s multi-billion dollar tax and climate bill.

The California Democrat also twice kicked off impeachment proceedings against former President Trump during his White House tenure.

“I just admire her focus, her workmanship, her dedication and her able to get things done and work with folks,” Rep. Gregory Meeks (DN.Y.), chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters. “When I think of the accomplishments that we’ve made under her leadership, I’m glad that I had the opportunity to be here during those times.”

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), a close Pelosi ally who was first to hug the speaker on the floor, called her California colleague “the most effective speaker in the history of the United States.”

The Democratic praise for Pelosi was bicameral. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.), who has served as Pelosi’s counterpart in the upper chamber for years, was present on the House floor during her remarks.

“I just left the floor of the house for one of the most emotional moments I’ve had in my career: the valedictory of Nancy Pelosi, one of the greatest legislators — and greatest people — I’ve ever met,” Schumer later said on the Senate floor.

“Few in American history have been as effective, as driven, as successful as Speaker Pelosi. She’s practically transformed every corner of American politics, and unquestionably made America a better, stronger nation,” he added.

But as Pelosi heads to the leadership exits, some Democrats are emphasizing that the California lawmaker will remain a consequential figure in the party — regardless of the title she holds.

“She’s not gonna leave Dem leadership, she’s still gonna be a leader in this caucus, you know, without all the nightmares of us … without the pains in the asses she had to deal with all the time,” Dingell said. “She’s got a great deal of influence, we all know how smart she is, she’s gonna be able to pull people together. She’s going to be a voice people are gonna listen to.”

“I think that her being still involved will be helpful and it’ll help us to get — get further faster,” Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) said.

Pelosi did get some praise from Republicans.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), who said he often speaks to Pelosi on the house floor about her granddaughter and his daughter who share a name, gave her a hug after her speech.

“We don’t agree on a dadgum thing. And I prayed for her husband to get well. But I’m a Christian first, not a Republican,” Burchett said. “We still talk, and I think this country needs a little more than that.”

“We disagreed probably 99 percent of the time. But she’s been a very effective speaker for her own cause,” said Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) “She had a gracious presentation of well-prepared remarks. I think it was very appropriate.”

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) was also present for Pelosi’s speech and hugged her afterwards.

“Part of it was I was first up to present on legislation immediately after. But also, I believe it was a historic moment there, and I usually tend to sit in on those no matter who it is. And thirdly, it’s an Italian thing,” LaMalfa said.

Others, however, did not contain their glee at Pelosi leaving the Speakership.

A national park became a world leader in marine music before it was trending

By Jonathan Horwitz

As Covid-19 spread around the world, something else went viral online – sea canteens. And a national park became a world leader in marine music before it was trending.

The folk tunes sung on board of 19th century sailing ships to coordinate tasks such as pulling nets and mooring anchors experienced a rebirth in 2021 thanks to the social media platforms TikTok and Youtube. one Techno rendition by Wellerman, a 150-year-old New Zealand whaling ballad, peaked at number 1 on the UK Billboard Top 100 chart in the first week of March.

What does this have to do with the American national parks?

The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is way ahead of the trend, having hosted monthly Chantey chants on Hyde St. Pier since the 1980s.

Before the pandemic, a handful of rangers and dozens of visitors gathered aboard the Eureka, a 19th-century ferry, to play maritime music to their hearts’ content until late at night.

Ranger Casino in front of Covid sang Chanteys on the pillars of the historic park / NPS

Ranger Peter Kasin has it Chantey sings since 1996. Kasin, a friendly man with a baritone voice and a big smile, is better known for his sociability than for driving a narrow ship. It has been reported that the only rules in his singing are: no drinking, no smoking, and no jumping off the pier.

That is not to say that the casino is not organized. In 30 years he has rarely missed a chant. And when the monthly amount got too big for the sailing ship Balclutha, he quickly found a new home for her on the larger ferry.

While Kasin makes sure that the monthly meetups run like clockwork, he keeps the atmosphere organic and improvisational. Apart from the fact that every singalong starts and ends with the same two chanties, everyone can join in with their maritime melodies of their choice.

“There’s no set list or anything,” says Kasin. “It’s very spontaneous.”

Kasin is unique among park rangers for having made another spontaneous decision in 1989 – to join the National Park Service to indulge his love of marine music. When friends took him to his first chant at the San Francisco Maritime Park, Kasin said he had a “revelation” on the protective deck of the Balclutha.

“I saw a park ranger with a guitar that had about 70 people singing and he said, ‘Oh my god, I love this,'” recalls Kasin. “I immediately decided that I wanted to do that.”

Other artists would join Casino for music festivals on the park’s Pier / NPS file

He walked up to the ranger, introduced himself, and the rest is history. After volunteering in the park for two years, Kasin became an interpretive ranger.

When the pandemic canceled face-to-face gatherings, Kasin made another impromptu decision about how to continue the Singalong tradition shortly before retirement.

He has moved the monthly Chantey Sings online to Zoom and continues to lead the virtual meetups, despite retiring from his other ranger duties last spring.

The decision was a great success. According to the casino, virtual attendance often exceeds 1,000 guests, including people from all over the world.

Pauline Grousset is one such international participant. The 24-year-old French woman says she is often the youngest Chantey singer in virtual meetups and sometimes the furthest from San Francisco.

However, Grousset tunes in from nine time zones – sings to the rising sun while Kasin and his company sing to the moon – because she says there is nothing quite like the San Francisco Chantey sings. And she would know. Grousset is writing her master’s thesis on marine music festivals as a musicologist at the Sorbonne in Paris.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, especially in France because we don’t have institutions like national parks,” Grousset said in a Zoom interview.

Such is the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, which is also home to the largest museum and research collection in the National Park Servicehas become a bastion of the maritime history of the American Pacific as well as nautical traditions from around the world.

“The San Francisco program is important because marine music has to be sung together,” said Grousset. As most of the music festivals have been canceled due to the coronavirus, she adds, “It’s really good that they managed to keep the singing going even during the pandemic.”

Maritime Cantons are celebrated monthly at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park as they played an important role in coordinating ship work. In order to raise the sails, turn the winch and man the pumps of the ship, the sailors had to work together in rhythm. The Chanteys also helped to lift the mood during the often monotonous and backbreaking work. Bring home official parking product by the Western National Parks Association.

Though sailors once considered it taboo to sing chantey on land, Kasin began recording songs from his homeland last spring to expand the park’s virtual ranger services.

For more information on sea canteens, see Shelter-in-Chantey Series on the website of the marine park.

Addendum of the traveler: To quench your thirst for chantey for a moment, check out the 2019 film Fisherman’s Friends, which is based on real Cornish fishermen who became famous after signing a recording deal for their chantey.

General information on singing can be found at https://maritime.org

At https://maritime.org/sea-chantey-sign-up/ you can sign up to conduct a song at the virtual Chantey Sing on April 17th.
