SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will be among those delivering remarks at Thursday’s memorial for the late U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein on the steps of San Francisco City Hall, where she served as the city’s first female mayor.

The service will mark the end of two days of events in the city that launched Feinstein’s political career. On Wednesday, mourners streamed into City Hall to pay their respects, honoring Feinstein as fearless, smart and the glue who kept the city together after two shocking political assassinations.

“She wasn’t afraid to do a man’s job. She wasn’t afraid to be a senator. She wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted,” said Lawanda Carter, 48, of San Francisco. “And that’s encouragement for us women now to have courage.”

Carter was among the scores of everyday San Franciscans and political leaders alike who brought flowers, bowed their heads or clasped their hands in prayer as they stood before Feinstein’s casket, which was draped in an American flag and on display behind velvet ropes. Many said they had never met Feinstein, but wanted to honor an indefatigable public servant who fought to level the playing field for women, members of the LGBTQ community and racial minorities.

Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also of San Francisco, and Mayor London Breed were among the officials who paid their respects.

Feinstein died early Friday in her Washington, D.C., home of natural causes, said Adam Russell, a spokesperson for her office. She was 90.

A recorded message from President Joe Biden will be played at Thursday’s memorial, where Pelosi and Feinstein’s granddaughter, Eileen Mariano, are also scheduled to speak. Gov. Gavin Newsom, himself a former San Francisco mayor, and former California Gov. Jerry Brown are also expected to be in attendance. A livestream is planned of the service, which will be closed to the public.

Feinstein was one of California’s first two women U.S. senators, a job she first won alongside Barbara Boxer in 1992, dubbed the “ Year of the Woman.”

Feinstein spent much of her career in the U.S. Senate but will be known as the forever mayor of San Francisco, a role she inherited in tragedy. She was president of the Board of Supervisors in November 1978 when a former supervisor assassinated Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the city’s first openly gay supervisor, at City Hall.

Feinstein, who found Milk’s body, became acting mayor and won election twice to serve as mayor until 1988.

Georgia Otterson, 76, a health care administrator, said Feinstein wasn’t as politically liberal as she would have liked, but the late mayor earned her respect with how she kept the heartbroken city together.

“We were all mourning together, holding candles. If memory serves me, Joan Baez sang,” Otterson said of an impromptu march that night from the historically gay Castro District to City Hall. “And she held us up.”

As a centrist Democrat, Feinstein was criticized by people on the left, including for her support for the death penalty, and in her later years, for working with Republicans. But the straight, white woman largely earned the gratitude of a city that celebrates its racial and sexual diversity.

She steered San Francisco through the HIV and AIDS crisis, bringing attention to an epidemic ignored by President Ronald Reagan. She also secured federal and private funding to save the city’s iconic cable cars from death by deterioration.

Feinstein led the city as it played host to the Democratic National Convention in 1984. Another San Francisco tradition — “Fleet Week” — was started by Feinstein in 1981, and this year’s annual celebration of air shows, naval ships and military bands is dedicated to her.

While Feinstein’s career sent her to Washington, she remained deeply involved in the affairs of San Francisco, the city where she was born and raised. She often called her successors — including Newsom — to complain about potholes or trash and to offer advice and encouragement.

Breed recalled looking up to Feinstein when she was a Black kid growing up in public housing and playing the French horn in a middle school band that performed regularly at mayoral events.

“She was so proud of us and she said so, and she took the time to talk to us, express how amazing we were and to remind us that we were her band,” Breed said at a news conference the day after Feinstein’s death.

Mourners Wednesday expressed their pride in Feinstein.

“She kept moving on up. I was proud of her, very proud of her,” said Dorothy Hudson, 81, a retired federal government employee. “She was very kind, very smart. She opened doors up to let people know, ‘You can do it.’”

San Francisco native Cari Donovan placed a bouquet of red and pink lilies and daisies on the floor before the casket. She lingered, crying quietly over a woman she never knew but who was so important to her life.

“She championed and fought for the rights of so many people,” Donovan said. “I’m so grateful. And I really just wanted her family to know how much she meant to me.”

The social worker said she talked to her 28-year-old daughter about the battles Feinstein fought so that younger generations of women could dream bigger. “She was a lioness.”

CLEVELAND (AP) — Michael Harris hit two homers and Bryce Elder, one of Atlanta’s eight All-Stars, threw 6 2/3 solid innings and led the Braves to their ninth straight win of the season Monday, 4-2 over the Cleveland Guardians night .

Harris scored solo shots in the third and fifth innings against Guardians rookie Gavin Williams (0-1). Atlanta’s No. 9 hitter is hitting .416 (37 of 89) with seven homers and 16 RBIs in his last 24 games.

Marcell Ozuna also scored for the Braves, who have won 17-of-18 and 24-of-27. Atlanta, which had three winning streaks in at least eight games, improved its MLB best record to 57-27.

Elder (7-1) didn’t give up a run until Amed Rosario hit a two-run single in the seventh. AJ Minter came on as a substitute and came out of a two-for-one save, and Nick Anderson eliminated Myles Straw with two opponents in the eighth. Raisel Iglesias hit a 1-2-3 ninth on his 15th save.

REDS 3, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) — Joey Votto hit a home run in two runs to end a 21-0 loss, Ian Gibaut pitched in the sixth inning from a stalemate and Cincinnati beat Washington for a fifth win in six games.

Votto hit a fourth-round home run on Jake Irvin, placing the ball squarely in the left-midfielder’s bullpen and powering Elly De La Cruz. It’s his fourth home run in 12 games this season since his return in June.

Luke Weaver (2-2) clinched the win by allowing two earned runs on six hits in more than five innings. He was spared a tenth straight non-decision – or worse – when Gibaut made the sixth run, conceding just one goal, knocking out Corey Dickerson and causing a Derek Hill flyout.

Catcher Tyler Stephenson drove in the Reds’ other heat with an RBI single in the second. Fresh from being named an All-Star, closer Alexis Díaz made his 24th save.

Jeimer Candelario hit his twelfth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning for Washington. Irvin (1-4) batted three and allowed six hits.

MARLINS 5, CARDINALS 4

MIAMI (AP) — Nick Fortes hit an RBI starting shot in the seventh inning and Miami battled St. Louis.

Marlin’s pinch hitter Yuli Gurriel equalized in game seven with a two-run double against reliever Andre Pallante (2-1) after two straight walks. The Marlins then used the fast Jon Berti to secure the run for Gurriel, and Berti scored with Fortes’ groundball single.

Tanner Scott, the Marlins’ reserve, hit a scoreless eighth to retain the lead and AJ Puk secured the last three outs for his 14th save of the season.

Paul DeJong had broken a 2-2 tie for the Cardinals with an RBI double in game six. Willson Contreras was 3 of 4, completing the cycle in trebles.

Huascar Brazoban (3-1) secured the last two outs of the seventh round and secured the win.

YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 3

NEW YORK (AP) — Harrison Bader hit a crucial three-run home run in the eighth inning and New York rallied to beat Baltimore.

Anthony Volpe scored the winning run in the seventh game on a wild pitch from All-Star Relief player Yennier Cano (1-1) before the Yankees made the comeback before post-game fireworks.

Giancarlo Stanton opened the eighth with a hard single against Cano before Anthony Rizzo followed with a single against Danny Coulombe. After putting in a strong performance in the first pitch, Bader hit a 1-1 winner for his seventh home run in left field.

Tommy Kahnle (1-0) sat out former Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks in the eighth round to tie the game. Clay Holmes scored two strikeouts for his tenth save in a 1-2-3 ninth set.

The second-placed Orioles lost for the fifth time in six games and are three games ahead of third-placed New York in the division standings.

BREWERS 8, CUBS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Newly signed Jahmai Jones hit a narrow three-run double in his first major league appearance since 2021, helping Milwaukee move past Chicago.

After bases loaded and there were two outs in the seventh inning, Jones hit a line drive on the first pitch from reliever Anthony Kay, who one-hoped off the midfield wall and hit Raimel Tapia, Christian Yelich and Owen Miller, causing the Game ended in 6-0 draw .

The Brewers finished their comeback six runs down in the eighth inning with an RBI single from Willy Adames and a sacrifice fly from Miller – both ahead of Mark Leiter Jr. (1-2) – to take an 8-6 lead.

Brewers All-Star Devin Williams conceded a double from Nico Hoerner and a walk to Ian Happ in the ninth round, then knocked out All-Star Dansby Swanson to earn his 18th save.

Joel Payamps (3-1) threw a perfect eighth inning for Milwaukee.

The Brewers won their third straight game to stay tied with Cincinnati for first place in the NL Central. The Cubs have lost three straight games and seven of their last eight games.

ASTROS 12, RANGERS 11

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jose Abreu and Chas McCormick had back-to-back RBI doubles in the ninth inning and second-placed Houston Astros rebounded after giving up an eight-run lead.

Abreu and McCormick also scored earlier for Houston, who picked up three out of four games against their state rival to move up the league lead within three games. It’s the closest result the Astros have had in a month after trailing a full 6 1/2 games.

Kyle Tucker, who led Houston’s best eighth Grand Slam 6-0 in the second round, led in the ninth round with a single against Rangers closer Will Smith (1-3), who made only his second save from 16 chances. Abreu and McCormick then followed Alex Bregman’s deep flyout with their doubles.

The Rangers had their only lead from Corey Seager’s sacrificial flight, leading to an 11-10 score in the eighth.

Bryan Abreu (3-2), Houston’s fifth pitcher, allowed that run in the eighth before Ryan Pressly machined the ninth for his 18th save in 21 attempts.

TWINS 8, ROYAL 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Edouard Julien hit a pinch hit and a solo home run to start a five-run eighth inning and Minnesota defeated Kansas City for the seventh time in eight games this season.

Carlos Correa had four hits from the starting position and Byron Buxton scored two runs with sacrifice flies for the Twins.

The Royals had leveled the score early in the inning with a solo home run by Nick Pratto against Brent Headrick (2-0), the first batter he faced.

Kansas City reliever Taylor Clarke (1-3) gave up five runs and five hits, retiring just one of the seven batters he faced.

The Royals have lost 11 of their last 12 games in Minnesota.

MARINERS 6, GIANTS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Julio Rodríguez hit a two-run double against All-Star closeer Camilo Doval in a four-run ninth inning and Seattle was able to beat San Francisco.

JP Crawford broke a 2-all tie with a sacrifice fly against Doval. Rodríguez’s double made it 5-2, and Teoscar Hernández added an RBI single with two outs, giving the Mariners Doval his worst performance in the majors.

Andrés Muñoz (2:1) secured victory in eighth place. Doval (2-3) saved for the third time in 27 chances this season.

Rookie catcher Blake Sabol hit two home runs and drove all five runs for the Giants. He launched a three-run shot with two outs in the ninth to put San Francisco on point. Pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores hit a single before Paul Sewald knocked out Brandon Crawford to end the game.

PADRES 10, ANGELS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Blake Snell helped keep All-Star hitters Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout in the ballpark, and Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run home run that gave the disappointing San Diego a big win.

Trout left the game with an apparent left hand or wrist injury after committing an offfield foul in the eighth inning’s break. He immediately shook his arm. Angels manager Phil Nevin and a trainer came out to check on the superstar and he left the field.

Ohtani wasn’t able to add to his 31 homers, which led in the major leagues. He went twice. Trout, who has 18 home runs, walked, had two singles and hit one run.

In perhaps the biggest batting attempt of the night, rookie reliever Tom Cosgrove beat Ohtani in three straight pitches with two runners in the sixth pitch, a hitter after Trout hit an RBI single, and put the Angels 4-2.

Snell (5-7) held the Angels on seven hits while he had seven hits in five innings and had four walks.

Jaime Barria (2-4) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings, hitting out five and walking none.

DODGERS 5, PIRATES 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Max Muncy hit his 18th home run of the season and Los Angeles gave Dave Roberts his 700th win as a manager of the Dodgers.

Jason Heyward and Miguel Rojas had RBI doubles to help the Dodgers get back on their feet after losing the final two games of a weekend series in Kansas City.

Caleb Ferguson (5-3), the second of six Los Angeles pitchers, clinched the win. Evan Phillips converted the ninth goal into his twelfth save

Mitch Keller (9-4) gave up five runs (four earned) and hit out seven in five innings. The Pirates have lost three straight games by leaving nine on base and were 2 to 9 with runners in point position.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made an unpopular decision in the 2021 NFL Draft, according to some fans and experts. With the 24th overall selection, the team decided on a running back instead of addressing obvious needs along the offensive.

By now, fans know that Najee Harris was Alabama’s standout, but few debate whether Harris was worth the pick, even after just six games. In fact, at the start of the 2021 regular season, Harris was able to produce some impressive stats:

Harris has unique abilities in terms of size, speed, and agility. While he’s not a Brenner who will overtake defensive backs, he’s capable of playing games as both a runner and a receiver, and this makes him move up the list for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award to win.

If you look at the list above, you can see how the Steelers’ primary ball carrier could move up the list. Obviously, the NFL is a quarterback-driven league, so players like Jones and Lawrence will be the easiest to move up this list, but someone who might bet money on these odds might want to consider Harris a serious contender.

With Chase in the lead at this point in the season, you have to wonder if a rookie receiver can hold up those odds, considering he relies on someone else, Joe Burrow, to help with his overall production.

It won’t be easy, but if the Steelers keep on sticking to the run, using Harris as both a runner and a pass catcher, there is no doubt that he should be considered for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

The defense will look a little different this season. Most of the staff that will be deployed will return, but there will be some wrinkles. Brandon Staley has been known to be willing to take risks and make some changes.

One of the most significant changes will be the use of two players, one of whom was featured in Derwin James during his rookie season, while veteran cornerback Chris Harris Jr. has dominated cornerback and slot for years.

During his rookie season, James played linebacker, free safety, and sometimes even pass rusher, so the Chargers defense is trying to take full advantage. Also, Harris is thrown into the mix for being a smart player, whom Staley refers to as the defensive coordinator on the field.

“It’s huge,” said an excited Harris in June. “Me and he (James) are like the positional players. I would say obviously only DBs because he and me play in three different positions.”

The safety in the third year will play similarly to his rookie season, but will also be involved in the slot, especially when the team encounters larger receivers or even tight ends. Harris will play outside corner, slot and strong security.

Basically, Harris is in his position when James is in the slot.

“I really coach him on it because he’s something of a linebacker / nickel,” said Harris. “It just increases the speed. We play both the run and the pass in these packages. You have five defensive linemen that the offensive line will have a problem with blocking.”

For Harris it will be a game safety adjustment as he hasn’t done it since his rookie season, but time will help.

“I just have to get used to it,” said Harris. “I usually get out of here and just play corner or nickel, and I’m very comfortable with that. Now I have to move a lot more, communicate properly, learn how to play my corners and so on. ” It’s new to me, but it was fun. ”

When he signed with the Chargers last off-season, Harris said the main reason was that he wanted to play with James. He felt he could mentor him, but he relied on James to help him with the new fold of defense.

“Definitely in that defense,” declared Harris. “We’re just trying to find ways to fill that void, so this is something new. I can use a deeper part of the field because I’m usually like a linebacker in the pits. I see it the way you play in midfield and read the quarterbacks a lot more. That’s something I ask these guys. ”

James is not only enthusiastic about the various moves, but also about playing again. He has only played five games in two seasons with two different training camp injuries.

He played on the field with one goal. During practice on Friday, he intercepted Justin Herbert during a one-on-one against receiver Keenan Allen. On the first day of padded practice, it only took four games for James to deliver a big hit on Justin Jackson’s running back.

“There is always room to grow; you never quite have it in this game, “said James. “You will always find little things that you didn’t know. We work hard. I have a lot of people and a lot of great coaches to help me. It will be fun.”

When there are such moving parts, there is one thing that will be critical.

“A lot of people move around, have more moving parts, and all I can say has to be able to communicate, to communicate more in this system,” explained James. “Oh man. Oh like I said, we all learn and we all grow together.”

During practice, you can hear the players asking each other to speak to each other. There was one game during the week where receiver Keenan Allen stayed wide open and James came off the field and asked, “Why was Kee so open?”

When he was told, James looked at secondary school and said, “Guys, we need to talk out there. We can’t leave the boys so open.”

He had shown real leadership in his first three seasons but this season it comes to fruition. He is the signal caller and the leader of the defense.

“But you’ll see me everywhere,” said James.

Chargers’ defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill knows Harris from her time in Denver, but he really gets to see what James is about while he coaches him. Hill knows how beneficial this could be this season.

“For us, that’s all,” said the defensive coordinator. “Often times people don’t know where these guys are going to compete. We can swap them depending on the down-and-distance or situation. That gives us a lot of flexibility. These guys are locked up. come and meet all the time. They are the lute in the group. They talk about things that could happen within these defenses. It lets us know that they are taking in everything and that they are really receptive to it. ”

Both are the leaders that the defense will look out for during practice and will be the players that the defense will urge to play big games. They will line up across the field according to the matchups, especially if they face Raiders Tight End Darren Waller or Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce. These are players James will take over.

It’s about matchups and getting players in the best positions to succeed on defense while trying to create confusion for offense.

“They have to find us and be able to plan us and we are going to make it really difficult for them,” Harris said in June.

Vice President Kamala Harris has reached an agreement to sell the 1,069-square-foot loft, which, according to the Wall Street Journal, was listed for $ 799,000, about 63% more than she paid for it in 2004. The one bedroom, 1½ bath property is located in a boutique condominium in San Francisco’s hot South of Market neighborhood. It was on the market a little over a week before it went under contract.

Harris bought the duplex unit almost 17 years ago for $ 489,000. That was when Harris became California’s first black district attorney.

According to the Journal, she allegedly paid $ 1,775,000 for the 1,700-square-foot condominium in DC’s West End neighborhood in 2017. The complex offers a 24-hour concierge at the front desk, a dog washing station and a heated rooftop pool with a sun terrace.

The four-bedroom, five-bathroom home in Los Angeles was purchased by her husband, entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff, for $ 2.7 million in 2012. The couple married in 2014.

The Miami Dolphins have tons of options in the 2021 NFL Draft, with two picks in the first round and even more capital beyond. On April 29th, Miami’s plans for the first round selection are taking shape.

Things started rapidly when Miami traded # 3 overall for the San Francisco 49ers. Minutes later, the Dolphins sent the number 12 to the Philadelphia Eagles via San Francisco for the sixth pick.

With only a few days left before the NFL Draft Clock kicks off, Miami is taking calls for its first round first choice. In the meantime, the team’s position priority could change with their later selection in Round 1.

According to Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, Najee Harris’ Dolphins are moving away in 18th place overall and are focused on creating an edge breaker.

Harris would be a fantastic addition to Miami’s backfield. He would reunite with Tua Tagovailoa, a close friend, and help make this a more balanced offense. With teams becoming increasingly concerned about investing a selection from the first round in a running back, it comes as no great surprise that the front office could head in a different direction.

Miami would surely love it if the Michigan Edge rusher Kwity Paye, the 18th player on our draft board, was available. But he could be on the New York Giants’ radar and targeted by a few other clubs. When he’s gone, Azeez Ojulari and Jaelan Phillips stand out as intriguing options at number 18.

Assuming Miami is waiting to run back by day two, some candidates stand out.

Harris likely won’t make it through Round 1 thanks to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hence, the Dolphins will have to look elsewhere for a featured running back.

If Travis Etienne is in 36th place overall, chances are he’ll be available. He is the best threat for the 2021 NFL Draft class home run and his passport catcher skills are flying under the radar. While it profiles itself as an exciting back on the next level, it may not be Miami’s preferred target.

North Carolina star Javonte Williams is the turnaround to think about. While it’s a year-long wonder risk, it also means fewer tread concerns on the tires. At 5-foot-10, Williams offers incredible evasiveness, runs with a physicality hard to find, and is incredible at maintaining balance after contact.

NFL draft analyst Matt Fitzgerald compares him to an improved version of Josh Jacobs, the star of the Las Vegas Raiders. Such a return would be a huge boost to Miami’s crimes.
