NO LATER THAN March 29, 3:15 p.m Isolated storm cells swept across the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday, showering the region with hail and rain. They delivered fresh snow to the highest peaks, including Mount Diablo in the East Bay and Mount Hamilton in the South Bay.

The storms emerged over the region on Wednesday as an area of low pressure continued its journey south along the California coast and passed the Bay Area.

In downtown San Francisco, hail storms hit city streets just after 3 p.m., with many Twitter users commenting on the bizarre weather.

“I’ve never seen hail like this in San Francisco,” wrote one Twitter user. “It does not stop!” said another.

“Cow Hollow Hail!” wrote one Twitter user. “That was amazing and went on for a good 10 minutes, even with shouting from the side. I phoned someone downtown and was told it hardly ever rained there – never a dull moment.”

The chance of heavy downpours, small hail, gusty winds and thunderstorms will last through 10 p.m. Wednesday in the North Bay and midnight in the rest of the Bay Area, the National Weather Service said.

March 29, 7:30 a.m Scattered storm cells dropped hail in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area Wednesday morning, and more unsettled weather is forecast later in the day.

An area of low pressure moving south along the California coast is expected to skirt the San Francisco Bay Area this afternoon, dropping more hail and rain and kicking up winds. There is also a very small chance of thunderstorms.

“You’re going to have some breezy moments and a lot of wind changes,” Brayden Murdock, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told SFGATE. “This low drives clockwise winds around it. You will see many south winds and then south east winds. As it passes us, the winds shift north.”

The center of the low pressure is not expected to sweep directly over the region like last Tuesday’s storm did, and winds are not expected to be nearly as strong as in the previous storm.

“We don’t expect a repeat of last week,” Murdock said. “Last week there were a lot of ingredients that went perfectly with what we saw. This low is coming at us from a different direction.”

It’s hailing and thundering again in the Berkeley Hills @BerkeleyScanner @berkeleyside @DrewTumaABC7 @NWSBayArea pic.twitter.com/9a5DMv2BRf

The passing of the low will also bring some showers to the region. These isolated cells could dump moderate to heavy rain but are likely to move quickly.

“Around 1 p.m. we could see showers coming through,” Murdock said. “Between then and now we could see a few pop-up showers.”

Tuesday’s weather models pointed to a thunderstorm chance of up to 30% in the Bay Area on Wednesday, but the chance has since dropped to less than 10%.

“There’s a chance we’ll see some thunderstorms today, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a really big chance in terms of strong impact,” Murdock said. “It doesn’t promote the best environment for thunderstorms. We just don’t get all the ingredients. There’s energy there, but it looks like it’s really pulling away.”

Conditions are expected to be dry on Thursday and Friday, with a weak system on Saturday potentially bringing light rain to the North Bay.

This breaking news has been updated.

Small hailstones fell in parts of San Francisco Wednesday morning, products of an as yet unsettled weather system that could bring more lashing winds and thunderstorms to parts of the Bay Area.

The National Weather Service issued a warning that pea-sized hail could also be expected in parts of Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties by early morning.

The morning’s stormy weather should give way to calmer conditions Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco as the extratropical cyclone, which brought violent winds, rainstorms and the attendant threat of landslides to an already sodden Bay Area, moves south, according to Chronicle weather forecaster Gerry Diaz .

Thunderstorms were most likely forming Wednesday along the coasts of Sonoma and Santa Cruz, as well as in the highlands of Napa County, the coast of San Francisco Bay, and the low-lying regions of Solano and Contra Costa counties.

Winds were expected to reach between 30 and 35 miles per hour in the Bay Area.

In San Francisco, too, the weather conditions caused temperatures to drop – low enough to set a daily record.

On Tuesday, temperatures in the city dropped to 51 degrees, one degree below the 52-degree record set in 2006.

A cold front passing over the San Francisco Bay Area brought chilly weather and widespread hail on Tuesday, and the National Weather Service said “much colder temperatures” are coming with a freeze warning in effect for many locations through Friday morning.

There were reports of hail across the region, from the North Bay to the South Bay, on Tuesday evening, and photos and videos posted in social media showed landscapes blanketed in the pea-size ice.

The South San Francisco Fire Department reported hail on roadways and warned people to drive with caution, and images from Danville showed a thick layer of icy slush on the ground.

Snow fell on the highest mountain peaks, including Mount Hamilton in the South Bay and Mount Diablo in the East Bay. Video from the Maycamas Mountains that extend into Sonoma and Napa counties showed a period late Tuesday afternoon when relatively heavy snow fell at an elevation of 1,700 feet.

The cold front ushered a mass of frigid air into the region, and after skies cleared overnight, already chilly temperatures dropped even further. Early Wednesday morning, lows dipped into the low 30s in inland valleys, with some spots even dipping into the bone-chilling 20s. Low 30s were reported in the East Bay hills, North Bay hills and Diablo range. Coastal spots are expected to stay in the low 40s, and San Francisco hit 42 at 3 am Wednesday.

The weather service has a freeze warning in effect from 2 am Wednesday through 9 am Friday with widespread sub-freezing temperatures expected across inland areas.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service warned.

Freeze Warning updated to include inland portions of the South Bay such as San Jose. Take action now to prepare and check on those without adequate access to shelter, including your pets. #cawx pic.twitter.com/4GgnY8NUcS

San Francisco and most of the Peninsula aren’t included in the warning, but on Tuesday the weather service added the Santa Clara Valley.

Through Thursday, afternoon highs across the region will be in the 50s. Friday afternoon will be slightly warmer with highs getting into the low 60s. By Saturday afternoon, Santa Rosa is expected to hit a high of 62 degrees with Oakland and San Francisco hitting a high of 63.

Long-term weather models show the next chance for rain in early March with the current forecast showing only light precipitation with only a few hundredths to a tenth of an inch of rain.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPPIX) — The KPIX 5 Weather Team has declared Tuesday a “First Alert Weather Day,” with several different threats potentially impacting the Bay Area.

A storm system in the Pacific Northwest will bring off-and-on rain showers into the Bay Area Monday night, continuing throughout the day on Tuesday. While the rain is welcome after over six weeks of dry weather, some of the showers could produce cloud-to-ground lightning and small hail.

READ MORE: Gas Pump Sticker Shock Sends Chill Into California Weekend Travel; ‘Weeks Ahead Could Be Rather Ugly’

“There’s going to be a lot of cold air in the upper levels of the atmosphere. That increases how unstable the atmosphere is, which increases the threat of cloud-to-ground lightning,” explained First Alert Chief Meteorologist Paul Heggen. “The unstable environment, coupled with the cold air, will also allow some small hail to fall out of any showers that manage to become thunderstorms.”

READ MORE: US to Impose Sanctions After Putin Recognizes Breakaway Ukraine Regions

Rainfall amounts will be light overall, with only a few hundredths of an inch of rain for most areas and just a 50% chance of measurable rain for any one spot in the Bay Area.

Once the rain showers wind down Tuesday evening, cold temperatures will take over for the rest of the week. Most of the North Bay is under a Freeze Watch for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. That’s likely to be upgraded to Freeze Warning, as temperatures will drop to the mid to upper 20s in the early mornings.

MORE NEWS: Suspect Sought After Stabbing at Petaluma Park Hospitalizes Victim

Other inland parts of the Bay Area will drop to near freezing, which will prompt a Frost Advisory. Bay Area residents are advised to take care to protect sensitive vegetation and outdoor plumbing, and make sure outdoor pets have a warm place to shelter.

There were confirmed reports of heavy rains mixed with hail in Marin County.

The National Weather Service’s office in the Bay Area also reported gusty winds, particularly at higher elevations in the East and North Bay. Weather officials warned that the combination of wind and saturated soil could topple some trees.

Problems arose in the morning hours.

San Mateo officials reported that trees down the street on Crystal Springs Rd between Donner Ave. and Cunningham Way blocked.

The California Highway Patrol reported flooding on San Clemente Dr. in Corte Madera, Highway 80 near Red Top Road. in Solano County and on the Bodega Highway in Sonoma County.

The weather service has issued a flood warning for the districts of Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara at least until 10:45 a.m.

“The Doppler radar showed heavy rain moving across the East Bay, with additional showers likely to affect the area,” the weather service said. “This will lead to flooding in cities and small streams.”

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Lake Tahoe area that extends through Tuesday.

“Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet, except 3 to 5 feet over 7,000 feet,” warned the Reno Meteorological Service. “Gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour. Gusts of more than 100 miles per hour can occur on the ridges of the Sierra. “

Another dose of blinding blizzards and strong winds created a scenario ripe for avalanches.

“A high avalanche danger is expected in the mountains by Monday morning,” said NWS forecasters. “Heavy snowfall and extremely strong winds have led to unstable avalanche conditions in the mountains. Large natural avalanches and man-made avalanches are expected. “

This is a developing story. Details will be added as information becomes available.

ST. HELENA (CBS SF) – Parts of the North and East Bays were taken by surprise on Thursday in May when a storm cell caused brief rainfall with heavy rain and even hail in some areas.

The unusual weather comes on the same day that some of these areas have been designated as regions of exceptional drought.

Isolated showers were observed in North Bay today, most of which evaporate before hitting the ground. Some spots reported moderate, if brief, showers near the surface. Here is a quick view of the end of these showers as they move parallel to SF. #CaWx pic.twitter.com/QAHPOCt5Ju

– NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) May 20, 2021

Dark clouds swept down from North Bay starting Thursday afternoon, bringing showers to parts of Napa County before moving south to Danville, Walnut Creek, Concord and Martinez.

And as one would expect with unusual showers, a rainbow could be seen in the East Bay.

While one of these areas of the showers dissolved as it moved over San Ramon in the early evening, a second cell around 6 p.m. provided more showers in Wine County

At one point, the cell over St. Helena caused a lightning strike in addition to previous hailstones even early Thursday evening.

While the storm cells were expected to largely fall apart at sunset over the next few hours, the chances are some more showers will appear in North Bay on Friday.

In the meantime, the unusual weather wasn’t just happening in the immediate Bay Area.

Tonya Daugherty was visiting Truckee from North Carolina on Thursday. She hadn’t expected snow on her trip to the Sierra.

“Nobody at home will believe that,” she said.

A Sierra storm in late spring surprised even the locals. Truckee residents heard of the winter storm recommendation but didn’t expect there would be snow flurries or a winter wonderland in late May.

“I’m used to the snow, but I’m not used to the snow when it is almost summer,” said Mike Lake.

“Usually the weather is really nice this time of year, but I think it just chose to fall on us by accident,” said Talia Moore.

MORE NEWS: Man arrested in plans to steal 10,000 gallons of diesel from gas stations in the Bay Area

But not everyone was surprised. Scott Lee says he saw snow fall in the Sierra well into summer.
