The Big Dickens Christmas Market and Victorian Holiday Party is very special and a festive treat that I want everyone to experience. The Dickens Fair is truly amazing! Illuminated to look like London in the sparkling setting sun, with over three acres of exhibition space, endless amusements, crafts and games, and fine dining and drinking to your heart's content. There are 800 performers, all dressed in period correct clothing, who take classes to learn how to act and speak in Victorian London. The Great Dickens Christmas market is crowded Holiday magic for the littlest guests, The Tinsel Green Children's Area features hands-on craft activities, old-fashioned games of skill and chance, and lively interactive shows. Young viewers will cheer for the hero and mock the villain in the children's melodrama, while Alice is there in the children's melodrama Mad Hatters Tea Party, or learn the tricks of the chimney sweep trade from the London School Miracle Sweeps. It's funny that I'm not allowed in with my camera… and neither is anyone else!

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair was originally produced in 1970 by Ron and Phyllis Patterson, inspired by their success Renaissance amusement market, which over time brought them to the San Francisco Bay Area Summer of love in 1967. The next generation, Kevin and Leslie Patterson, now along with their adult sons Andrew and Michael, have been producing the fair since 2000, continuing a 50-year family tradition and three generations of deeply immersive, historically authentic environmental theater. Anyone who loves and misses the authenticity of the old Renaissance fair will be thrilled and thrilled The Dickens Fairbecause thanks to the Patterson family's tireless attention to detail, all that old magic is still there and has never left.

“Every year we are inspired to be better than ever and are rewarded with the delight and surprise of our guests,” says Executive Director Kevin Patterson. “The holiday spirit of Charles Dickens and his London flourishes for several weeks – and we revel in the happiness and good humor of all in attendance.”

There are beautifully decorated shops and shopping carts offering fine crafts, imaginative clothing and accessories, jewelry, toys, and decorations for the holidays. Small accessories that you would never have thought would be discovered with great pleasure by buyers of all ages and desires.

One of my favorite sellers is the Sculptor cart, Rebecca love, who creates unique handcrafted ceramic life masks and body casts. Years ago I commissioned one of each for my wife Sandy, and they are actually some of our most treasured pieces of art at home. It is a pleasure to meet and work with Rebecca. There are also tiles and pottery, in styles and designs that only Rebecca can make. Take a look at their latest African masks.

Even though I don't play, I love it too Stephen Joynes' Fiddle Shop. Based in Palo Alto, California, Stephen performs restorations and repairs and runs his stand out of his love for the instruments. He told me, “I work from home.” My workshop is in my garage and my back yard…this is a retirement job for me…I travel to the West Coast and set up my instrument shop at music festivals. “Spreading the joy of music, especially among children, is a very rewarding pastime.” Anyone can appreciate the workmanship of these beautiful instruments. I dye most of the fabrics I use myself, mixing a range of colors not available any other way. Silk velvet is one of my favorite fabrics because of its incredible softness, drape and feel against the skin. “My designs, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite art movement of the Victorian era, are romantic, sexy and artistic.”

2023 Nice Dickens Christmas Honest Returns To Daly Metropolis

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party will soon return to Daly City’s Cow Palace. This beloved annual event drops you into Victorian London, brought to life by hundreds of costumed players and a plethora of shops, stages, pubs, parties, and memorable performances. You can now buy tickets for the fair happening every weekend between Nov. 18-Dec. 17, 2023.

This annual event started in the 1970s and celebrates the world of writer Charles Dickens, author of A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and other literary classics. The Fair features experiences and characters inspired by and plucked directly from Dickens’ novels, including Father Christmas; Mad Sal; Mr. Dickens himself; and his Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.

This year brings some new drinking experiences including the Jekyll and Hyde Pub Crawl mystery, in which guests can try five different custom “elixirs” at various drinking establishments; and Port and Chocolate Tasting 4 times a day at the Green Man Inn.

Guests can enjoy a spectrum of performances across 7 stages including Irish singers, English pantomime, Bedouin belly dancers, and juggling. This is also a great time to do some holiday shopping because there will be over 100 shops and vendors selling fine crafts. Finally, the Sherlock Holmes Experience is back by popular demand for those that want to try a delightful new puzzle.

Costumes play a huge role in the overall experience, but don’t feel bad if you don’t want to hunt down a waistcoat or bonnet. Victorian costumes aren’t required but are warmly welcomed. Their costume guide and policies is a must-read before you attend, with plenty of dos and don’ts regarding your attire.

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair invites you to lose yourself in the fantasy of the experience, enjoy a fencing lesson, drink a little absinthe or Turkish coffee and enjoy the ride.

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party will be held on weekends from Nov. 18-Dec. 17 from 10am-6pm. The Fair will take place at the Cow Palace Exhibition Halls, 2600 Geneva Avenue, Daly City, CA.

General admission all-day adult tickets are $45 and youth tickets (under 13) are $25. You can also count on discounted Twilight tickets after 3pm.

Salesforce’s Marc Benioff claims San Francisco ‘seems nice’

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff took credit for San Francisco’s effort to clean up the streets ahead of his company’s biggest annual conference this week — days after he publicly threatened to pull the event due to rampant crime and homelessness in the city.

Benioff had demanded action from city and state officials ahead of his firm’s annual “Dreamforce” conference, warning that the 2023 edition could be the last to take place in San Francisco unless local leaders addressed his concerns.

“We put a lot of pressure on the city this year,” Benioff told reporters on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. “It looks great. It’s very safe right now. We’re moving in the right direction.”

Losing the Dreamforce conference would be yet another major blow for San Francisco, which has seen an exodus of companies and constant criticism from executives as it struggles with lawlessness, drug use and other glaring public safety issues.

This year, the conference was expected to attract approximately 43,000 visitors and generate nearly $90 million in revenue for San Francisco, according to data from the San Francisco Travel Association cited by Salesforce.

Benioff reportedly dodged a follow-up question on whether San Francisco’s apparent progress meant that Salesforce’s conference would return next year.

“Homelessness remains a major issue in our city,” Benioff said.

He also called on San Francisco to hire more police officers, step up enforcement of existing laws and build more affordable housing.

A Gallup poll last month found that nearly half of Americans believe the once-shimmering City by the Bay is a dangerous place, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

One notable critic of San Francisco’s management is X owner Elon Musk, who said in May that the city felt “post-apocalyptic.”

Bloomberg noted that Oracle and Google had recently moved events out of San Francisco.

Dreamforce runs through Thursday and features a mixture of speeches and panel discussions, entertainment and appearances from well-known celebrities and blue-chip executives.

Speaking at a later event on Wednesday, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom quipped that officials were “sucking up” to Benioff because “we want to keep you here.”

“Ramping up police visibility and community ambassadors in key tourist areas has been an ongoing effort,” a spokesperson for San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement. “San Francisco is committed to making Dreamforce a world-class event, as we do year after year.”

Last month, Benioff openly stated that Dreamforce would need a new home if local officials did not address major issues plaguing San Francisco.

“If this Dreamforce is impacted by the current situation with homelessness and drug use it may be the last Dreamforce” in the city, Benioff told the San Francisco Chronicle on Aug. 29.

Tour a Dream San Francisco House That’s All About Nice Marble

When a young San Francisco couple—a venture capitalist wife and tech executive husband, who met at a startup more than a decade ago—purchased their first home together in 2015, the small Laurel Heights condo was perfect for just the two of them. Looking to create a special first place together, the couple hired interior designer Lauren Nelson of Lauren Nelson Design to help them remodel the space with contemporary interiors anchored by a palette of blue, gray, and white. In the years following the renovation came an engagement, a marriage, and the couple’s first child—a baby girl.

“Fast-forward to 2020,” the wife says, “[and we are] now married, trapped indoors with a one-year-old in said condo during COVID. We longed for more space and a backyard and began the search during lockdown.”

The couple had always dreamed of owning a home in Presidio Heights—a family-friendly neighborhood that borders the Presidio: a 1,500-acre national park at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. So, when a property with a classic 1930s Colonial Revival–style house became available just two blocks from the park, they jumped on the chance to view it. “When we saw this house come on the market, on the same block our family friends live on, and a few short blocks from my sister and her family, we just had a feeling this was our house,” the wife recalls.

The home’s stately exterior would remain, but the interiors needed a reconfiguration. “It hadn’t been touched in decades,” the client says, “and needed quite a bit of work not only due to general upkeep but also some bizarre design choices—like a tiny primary bathroom with one sink and then a random ‘bonus’ sink in the primary closet.”

“The language of the house was good, but the scale of the rooms wasn’t great,” explains architect Stephen Sutro, who, with Melissa Kim of Sutro Architects, helped Nelson and the clients rethink the layout. “Our goal was to design a home that would serve the functional interests of a growing family—when the children are little, you need more visual control of them, but as they grow up, they can have a separate space in the house to retreat to with their friends,” Sutro explains.

Nelson tapped into the client’s love of French design to create a sophisticated but non-fussy aesthetic. “We appreciated the home’s classic architecture,” Nelson says, “and we didn’t want every room to feel like a white box—we wanted something a bit more traditional balanced by modern details. Each room has its own identity.”

What started as a nip here and a tuck there turned into a full-gut remodel, with the design team opening up the back of the house and adding glass-and-steel bifold doors in the kitchen to establish a connection with the backyard and allowing in more natural light. Plaster, marble (nine different varieties), and patterned wallpaper bring color and texture to every room, creating a rich background for a mix of custom, vintage, and ready-made furniture.

Philly seeks revenge after being defeated twice by the mighty Cubs last year

The last time we saw Taijuan Walker, he was giving up four runs over forty pitches in the first inning — an inning he couldn’t even finish before the hook knocked him off the stage. The rest of the gang fared no better that day, or at any game in San Francisco. They fell into an annoying pattern: they dropped runners, made costly mistakes, and gave up shot after shot, resulting in run after run. Walker came into tonight’s game with just three days off since that brief but infamous performance. Today he started the game with a clean first inning and continued to shine in 5.1 innings without a score, conceding just two hits, making three walks and hitting three strikeouts.

I gotta love a good redemption story. Let’s hope this is the walker that appears on every launch from now on.

Yesterday, Trea Turner was granted a break from the lineup after a disappointing start to his tenure as a pinstripe player. He hit more home runs and had more RBIs in the seven games of the World Baseball Classic than in the first quarter of the regular season. As he enters the batter’s box, he looks just as tense and frustrated as the fan base watching him, which became very real for him when Friday night’s sell-out crowd expressed their disappointment at his performance in the manner in which he was in the Philly holds every player accountable – a rousing cacophony of boos. He was reported to have been working with Kevin Long yesterday afternoon and returned to the lineup today to take the batting lead. He huffed in the first and third innings. But at the end of the seventh set he hit a line drive into the gap for a double and this time the crowd cheered the new shortstop.

Against left-hander Justin Steele, who has performed well for the Cubs this season except for his last game against Houston, Rob Thomson once again chose to sit on Marsh and Stott. Although Topper knows baseball and this team better than any other writer or commentator, one has to wonder if their contributions would have resulted in more runs today had they both started the game independently left-handed on the mound. Still, a win is a win.

In the second inning, the Phillies reached base when Steele defeated Kyle Schwarber with a 94 MPH sinker. With two punches to him, Bohm hit a slider into flat right field. Edmundo Sosa grounded Schwarber and Bohm to shortstop for second and third, but consistent with the Phillies’ recent schtick, the inning ended without a hit when Josh Harrison grounded.

Daulton Guthrie got a piece of a first-pitch sinker for a two-out double at the end of the fifth set – his first hit of the season. Trea Turner busted to – by now you know how the song goes, so sing along – take the bishop to No. 1.

After defeating Nico Hoerner in the fifth set, Walker was replaced by Seranthony Dominguez. A pick-off attempt went past Bohm, allowing Hoerner to move into second place. Seranthony then went to Dansby Swanson. He prompted a pop-up from Ian Happ and hit Seiya Suzuki to end the inning. Seranthony hasn’t given up on his deserved run since April 14th.

At the end of the sixth period, while Steele was still on the mound for the Cubs, Nick Castellanos nailed a slider into the left corner of field, earning him second place in standing. He was knocked out in third place by a laser shot from Suzuki in right field after a high pop-up from Harper.

In the seventh round, Sosa hit an Adbert Alzolay sweeper into the left corner of the field and pulled to second base while standing. Daycare graduate Bryson Stott, who was used as Harrison’s backup, got to the plate, looked at a shot, swung and missed a fastball, then hammered a four-seater into the right field grandstand to break the deadlock and raised the Phillies at two. Kyle Schwarber spoke for all of us with his reaction from the dugout.

It was the first close home run of Stott’s career.

Craig Kimbrel took the ball in the ninth, finished the game and hit two before giving a home run to Christopher Morel, who may think he’s a cat, but maybe not. Trey Mancini came to the plate with two outs and worked an eight-pitch walk. Then Patrick Wisdom entered the box that represented the potential winning run. But the baseball gods smiled at Philly today, ending the suspense with a pop-up behind the plate that mask-shed JT Realmuto was able to pursue and catch to end the game. It’s Kimbrel’s 399th career parade.

After being defeated twice by the Cubs last year it’s nice to see a streak from them, especially in front of a sold out crowd on a warm and sunny South Philly afternoon. The pitching team put on a solid performance, with Walker, Dominguez, Strahm, Brogdon, Soto and Kimbrel combined in a three-hit game and conceded just a single earned run. However, the offensive was 7-1 today, with the runners on goal and a total of seven players left behind. While they could get away with it today against the Cubs, teams like the Braves – who the Phils meet next weekend – are unlikely to fail to take advantage of the Phillies’ inability to move runners across the plate.

Dansby Swanson continues to have the dumbest name in baseball history, even surpassing Steve Sharts, Rusty Kuntz and Cannonball Titcomb.
On a cool, foggy night in Minnesota, Joey Gallo was hiking through the woods under a full moon when he heard a branch snap behind him. He turned and saw a shadow moving through the mist in the trees behind him. Frightened, he quickened his pace. Footsteps followed, coming closer, and he felt the hot breath of something inhuman crawling down his neck. Knowing he shouldn’t but couldn’t help it, he peered behind him. And then bearded Kyle Schwarber, wild-eyed, grabbed Gallo and pinned him to the ground. Schwarber looked at the full moon and howled before turning his attention to the terrified twin and sinking his teeth into Gallo’s flesh. The darkness swallowed him. When he finally regained consciousness the next morning, Joey Gallo staggered out of the woods and now has 11 homers and 23 RBIs despite hitting just .215 over 107 at bats.

Hal Greer is a bit forgotten today, but he was an outstanding and fierce NBA guard.

The development of the NBA has been muddled at times. The guys come over today and sign huge contracts. Even the shoe stores are far bigger than the contracts handled by the likes of Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell.

TV coverage is in another galaxy now, and even high school gamers are getting plenty of camera time.

As such, some of the earlier stars who lacked the (excessive) presence of today’s game are naturally, albeit unfairly, overlooked. Many people would never guess that the first non-white player in the NBA was actually Japanese – Wat Misaka in 1947.

People even forget people like Hal Greer.

A native of Huntington, West Virginia, Greer chose to play Marshall for his home team. He was drafted by the Syracuse Nationals in 1958 and picked in the second round.

He was great right away, winning Rookie of the Year and launching a career in the Hall of Fame. And when Syracuse moved to Philadelphia in 1963, he was soon paired with Chamberlain, who had moved west when the Warriors left Philly for San Francisco, and in 1966-67 the Sixers were the only team to disrupt Boston’s incredible championship run (not counting) . the St. Louis Hawks in 1958 when Bill Russell was injured).

Often when you watch older videos you can’t imagine that some of these guys are playing today. And you see things that Greer would never get away with today, starting with ball handling, which is antiquated by today’s standards.

Still, he was clearly no plumber or firefighter, and his fierceness, athleticism and flair for the game are unmistakable. Greer was brilliant.

Yankees nice Reggie Jackson predicts his outdated MLB crew is shifting

Reggie Jackson spent 10 years in Oakland and won three World Series titles with the Athletics. But the Hall of Famer isn’t sure his old team will stay in town for long.

There’s been a lot of talk about the A’s moving out of California, and according to Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle, Jackson doesn’t think they’ll be in Oakland a few years from now.

“No, no, they won’t have a team here,” Jackson said. “You can’t play with 3, 4, 5, 6,000 people in the stands. You didn’t sell any suites, you don’t have any revenue here. What does the signage look like? You must have the income. You need to have players on your team making $20-30 million a year if you want to compete and fight. That doesn’t work, that doesn’t work here.”

The team’s lease on its stadium, the Oakland Coliseum, expires after the 2024 season. The A’s are currently negotiating with the City of Oakland over a proposed new park.

The A’s have considered a possible move to Las Vegas. Their Triple-A affiliate, the Aviators, is already based there and their president, Don Logan, is in favor of moving the big club.

“Las Vegas has always been a unique sports market, a really good sports market. It makes sense. My perspective, get the best deal you can in Vegas and start activating this community. And everyone else [fan base] on… Las Vegas offers a dynamic that no other team has. We have 45 million visitors to this market every year and that’s what we want – heads in bed. That’s what Las Vegas is all about… There’s a better opportunity here [for the A’s] long-term.”
