Dodie loved her family, her friends and everyone she hadn’t met.

Our beloved Dorothy Henion passed away in Portland at the age of 92 after a serious fall. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1930 to Mary Reagan Miller and Robert Theophilus Miller. In 1952 she joined her older sister Margaret in San Francisco. This led to her meeting her adoring husband, Wakeman “Burr” Henion, at UC Berkeley. They married in 1954 and spent 66 years together.

She baked the best chocolate chip cookies that attracted all the neighborhood kids; But aside from the cookies, they came for the warm and friendly home they had made in the Oakland hills.

In 1977, Dodie and Burr took the whole family in and moved from the crowded, parched Bay Area to the idyllic island of San Juan. Within weeks, Dodie found her perfect job as Friday Harbor Elementary School’s indispensable secretary, while Burr became a carpenter and janitor to her 5 acres.

Their two children had sparked new passions that led to rewarding careers: Greg as a music teacher and Todd as a pilot.

As if a full-time job wasn’t enough, after a few years they opened *The Meadows*, a lovely bed and breakfast – one of the first on the island. People far and wide enjoyed Dodie’s cheerful demeanor along with Burr’s eye-twisting (and charming) puns.

Dodie and Burr moved to Portland, Oregon in 2002 to be closer to their children who survive: Todd, his wife Gwen Leland and their son Milo; and Greg, his wife Whitney (née Sutton) and their daughters Madeline and Daphne. Burr preceded her in death in April 2020 at the age of 94, laughing and joking to the end.

People were drawn to Dodie’s positive and sunny attitude. She opened her home and her arms to many who needed a warm, quiet place to be free from judgement. Dodie loved travelling, reading, all things British, loving her grandchildren, meeting new people and a good home cooked meal – especially when she wasn’t the cook.

She once estimated that she had cooked more than 80 turkeys for her family and stated that that was more than enough. She knew where the food inspector came from in Texas, she knew what her hairdresser’s daughter was learning in school, and what her plumber did before he became a plumber.

In short, Dodie loved people, and everyone loved her back.

We all miss her terribly. By following her examples of optimism, kindness and love, we keep a little bit of Dodie in the world.

Coming back as a church was a moving moment for many.

Organ music echoed in the cathedral banner, but this time there was a person in the bank.

“It feels a bit like a reunion, doesn’t it? It’s back to normal, ”said Regina Walton, a Grace parishioner.

Walton greeted the members.

Fourteen months after Grace was forced to close the door due to a pandemic, indoor personal worship was revived.

In 2020, Valerie Crane Dorfman spoke to her while watching a live stream of Grace’s Easter service from her home. For them, the return to the cathedral on Sunday was more than spiritual.

“I’m excited, emotional, and tearful. I feel the energy. It’s beautiful, ”said Dorfman.

Bishop Mark Andras got emotional and thanked the members who had stayed home during the pandemic.

“You have protected each other and your neighbors, you have literally saved lives,” said Bishop Andras.

The service was still streamed live for those who are not used to coming back yet. However, those who came needed a face mask and social distance.

Only 200 people can enter the cathedral, which normally seats 2,000 people. Prior reservation was therefore required.

Grace had to close the door twice now. The first was during the 1918 Spanish flu, which resumed twice.

“I think this is a great celebration of the end of COVID,” said Stephen Bensch of Berkeley.

For many it was a return to Nob Hill.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – On Pentecost Sunday, the Christian Church’s birthday, the massive Grace Episcopal Cathedral on Nob Hill in San Francisco celebrated something of a rebirth and opened its doors to worshipers for the first time since the pandemic began.

There is a tradition at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco that the ornate Ghiberti front doors remain closed except on special occasions or when the bishop is visiting. On Sunday both conditions were met and the doors were wide open.

Bishop Marc Andrus presided over Sunday Mass when the cathedral welcomed its congregation for the first time in more than 14 months.

“We saw it on Zoom every Sunday, but this is a great day to see everyone together,” said longtime parishioner Toye Moses. “God must be praised that we are alive today.”

During his sermon, the bishop thanked the people for their patience.

The bishop’s voice broke with emotion as he thanked the people for their patience.

“I am so thankful to you. You protected yourself and your neighbors. You literally saved lives, ”said Bishop Andurs.

The masks were kept on and the only singing came from the cathedral’s male choir, but just being in the building with its stained glass windows and high ceiling inspired a feeling you can’t get from Zoom.

“It’s great! And for me the spirit and the height of the building is a nice, strong feeling,” said Linda Rae Hardwick, who was visiting on Sunday.

That is the intention. The cavernous interior, the huge historical murals, the larger-than-life statues, says the bishop, they are all meant to make people feel small – to remind them that there is something bigger out there.

“Everything comes together in this building. It gives us a vision of harmony, beauty and space, which is important, the idea that there is a reality of love that is greater than us, greater than the problems we face, ”he explained.

After the service, the congregation reported outside to receive communion on the front steps. It may have been a safety precaution for COVID-19, but it was also a reminder that while you can get inspiration inside the church walls, you usually have to go outside to help others.

“A lot of people have been under great stress and stress this year,” said parishioner Alma Robinson. “We hope that we will be able to be a better community, then be a better country.”

On Sunday at 8:45 am, as part of its reopening ceremony, the church will present a special arts program in which images in honor of Pentecost and the month of heritage of the Asian and Pacific islanders will be projected onto the exterior facade of the cathedral.
