Christmas came early for some children at an elementary school in San Francisco’s Chinatown Sunday, at an event which hosted a toy giveaway and celebrated families successfully moving into affordable housing. 

The event was back in full force this year after some challenges due to the pandemic, according to the Executive Director of the Chinatown Community Development Center, Malcolm Yeung. 

“Today is our special super Sunday for our families living in single room occupancy hotels. We have about 100 families coming and will be distributing about 250 gifts to children of these families,” he said. 

It’s been a couple of challenging years for the community, according to Yeung. 

“I think we’re finally starting to feel like things are beginning to turn around and events like this are just symbolic of that,” he said.

The gifts given out Sunday were all donated. 

NBC Bay Area spoke with one parent there through an interpreter. 

“This is her first Christmas in America,” they said. “And it means a lot to her because everyone is coming together.”

They also thanked Mayor London Breed, who attended the event, and city for their work in helping to move some families from one-room units to affordable housing. 

The Salvation Army San Francisco said it’s seen an increase in need for toys this year. 

“We will be giving toys to about 1,600 children, which is a 30% increase from last year so we definitely need toys,” Divisional Communications Director of the Salvation Army, Jennifer Byrd said.

Distribution is set for Dec. 19. Ways to help can be found on their website. 

“This coming week, we start packing them and make sure every child gets the toy that they want, but definitely the sooner, the better so we can make sure they get all under the Christmas tree,” Byrd said.

Debra from Olympia was boiling water on her stove at the time of the contest last year. She’s a home care provider for her son and desperately needed a new hot water heater. When Debra’s friend nominated her, she said, “A new hot water heater would be a real helping hand to her and her family.”

Jim, in Lacey, was nominated by a friend who describes him as someone who helps others no matter the time or day, always putting his own needs on the back burner. Jim opened his home to give friends a place to stay during hard times. “Even though he is in the middle of so many projects, he will drop everything to help his friends,” his nominator said, “and a new water heater would help a great deal for his aging home.”

Contest details

The contest rules are pretty simple. The person must be a homeowner, at least 18 years of age, residing in their own home located within Thurston County, and it cannot be an RV. It must be a physical address where the hot water heater is accessible with adequate flooring/sub-flooring and running water. Like-for-like units will be installed, no switching from gas to electric units, or vise-versa. The contest runs from October 25, 2021 and ends at 11:59 pm on November 22, 2021.

Winners will be selected the first week of December with installation scheduled for January. OPT will notify winners by telephone and then announce them on their social media, Facebook and Instagram, in addition to announcements on local radio stations 96.9 KAYO Country and Olympia’s KGY 95.3.

Over 3,500 backpacks and 5,000 planners and activity books have been distributed to children and teenagers living in public and affordable accommodations across San Francisco

In the past two weeks, more than 3,500 backpacks of school supplies have been distributed to children and teenagers in the public and affordable neighborhoods of San Francisco to help them prepare for the 2021-2022 school year.

As part of the city’s efforts to ensure a safe return to face-to-face learning, the Department of Public Health (DPH) dispatched mobile vaccination teams to many of the giveaway events to provide COVID-19 vaccines to attendees 12 and older.
