The San Francisco Giants have reportedly fielded calls on left-hander Blake Snell. While that's not a huge surprise, many in baseball wouldn't have expected it just a week ago.

After the transfer of Jorge Soler, the team may indicate that they plan to transfer more players.

Snell returned from injury on July 9 and is one of the best pitchers in baseball, allowing just two earned runs in 24.0 innings pitched. After a 15-strikeout performance in his last game, contending teams seem to think he could help them.

If the Giants want to trade Snell, it makes little sense unless they get a package they can't refuse. Making the postseason won't be easy, but San Francisco is still very much in the race for the National League wild card.

However, Snell has a player option at the end of the year and could opt out if he wants to land the mega deal that his agent was unable to get him last winter.

If the front office believes they're going to lose him in the offseason, it makes a lot more sense to trade him right now. This is a seller's market, and teams have been willing to spend money on impact players in recent days.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand even believes Snell has a 50 percent chance of being traded when asked if he thinks a blockbuster trade will happen before Tuesday's deadline.

“Unless the Blue Jays pivot and decide to trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr., I would be surprised if any big names we haven't talked about yet get traded. However, the fact that Blake Snell has come up in the conversation in the last few days is a bit surprising, and from what I'm hearing there's a better than 50% chance he'll be traded. I wouldn't have predicted that a week ago.”

Snell's first season with the Giants was a year of ups and downs. He struggled more than ever at the start of the season, but with injuries, personal issues and more, his difficulties were well justified.

He has a 5.10 ERA in 47 2/3 innings pitched, which shows how bad he's been during his first few starts. The lack of Spring Training for the former Cy Young Award winner also likely got him off to a slow start, which again made sense.

With the opportunity to sign promising talent, there is a chance Snell will go to a team that gets an offer too good to refuse.

As Feinsand reported, there is a chance it will be traded, and given some of these returns, it might not be a bad idea to strike while the iron is hot.

After the All-Star break, there was hope that the San Francisco Giants would finally reach their potential after being one of the most disappointing teams in the first half of the season.

There was a lot at stake for this group, as a hot streak of play could put them within striking distance of the last NL wildcard spot.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case, as they have a 1-4 record after losing the weekend series to the Colorado Rockies and their first two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Giants could now become sellers and try to get some future building blocks back for their tradeable assets.

But maybe they are not yet ready to completely raise the white flag.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that San Francisco acquired Derek Hill in a late-night trade from the Texas Rangers after he was scheduled to play over the weekend. The former first-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2014 has a career .232/.280/.334 batting average with seven home runs, 23 RBI and an OPS+ of 73 in his 124 major league games.

“The organization obviously likes him. He's an athlete, so we'll see what happens,” manager Bob Melvin said of the new addition.

This comes at an interesting time, as their rookie Tyler Fitzgerald is in absolute winning form, which saw him set a franchise record on Tuesday.

If Hill is going to be part of this roster in the future, it could indicate that the Giants are willing to trade some of their veterans like Michael Conforto or Mike Yastrzemski.

With Hill out of options, they need to add him to their 40-man roster, which Pavlovic said could happen as early as Wednesday.

The San Francisco Giants' problems continue, with a 3-7 record in their last ten games.

With the Giants still just three games out of a wild card spot, they could look to improve before the trade deadline and secure a playoff spot. What they do before the trade deadline remains to be seen, and it's one of the more interesting situations in baseball.

There are clearly areas of need, including a center fielder and a shortstop. Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggested a deal that would help them get a player who can play both positions, but the trade could be a huge overpayment.

His proposal would send Jazz Chisholm Jr. to San Francisco for Carson Whisenhunt, Marco Luciano and Luis Matos.

“Chisholm has a batting average of .267/.332/.445 with 10 home runs, 13 stolen bases and an OPS+ of 115. He can play second base, shortstop and center field.

“The 26-year-old offers a rare combination of speed and power and has the potential to one day hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in a season. His positional flexibility would give the Giants multiple options to use him. As a 2022 All-Star, Chisholm is arbitration-eligible next year and is under the team's control through 2026.”

While Chisholm would be the ideal player to target in a deal on his own, there are some legitimate concerns about him.

In the first four seasons, he only appeared in more than 97 games once and was unable to fulfill all expectations.

That doesn't mean he's a bad player and wouldn't help this team, but this package seems a bit too much.

His best season was 2022, when he was named an All-Star for the first and only time in his career. That season, he posted an OPS+ of 138 and 14 home runs. Although he played well, he only appeared in 60 games.

If Chisholm can perform well for the Giants for a full season, he would have a good chance of being the best outfielder on the team, but that remains to be seen.

There is hope that he is healthy, as he has played in 75 games this season. His slash line of .267/.332/.445 with 10 home runs is also impressive. If he continues at this pace, this would be the best season of his career.

The Miami Marlins are in a position to sell, so trading the 26-year-old makes sense. And they're likely expecting a huge sum in return. San Francisco can offer them that with some of their young players, but it's up to management to decide if it's worth it.

It hasn't been easy for the San Francisco Giants this year after they massively revamped their roster in the offseason to transform themselves back into a competitive team.

Aside from Jordan Hicks and Matt Chapman, most of the high-profile additions to this team have been flops.

That's largely not the fault of the players, as Jung Hoo Lee suffered a freak shoulder injury that will keep him out for the rest of the year. Blake Snell signed late and hasn't had a proper warm-up period to prepare his body for Major League Baseball.

One thing continues to trouble this team during the summer months: injuries.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that the Giants have made another roster change after placing star outfielder Mike Yastrzemski on the injured list with an oblique muscle strain. Starting pitcher Keaton Winn is also being placed on the injured list with elbow inflammation.

In corresponding steps, San Francisco calls up the star young talents Luis Matos and David Villar.

Matos will get another chance at the major league level after making his debut in 2023, playing in 73 games with the Giants en route to a .250/.319/.342 batting average with two home runs, 16 extra-base hits and 14 RBI. He saw much less action this year, appearing in just 21 games before being demoted in the midst of his slump.

There were some opinions that if he appeared to have things under control at the plate, he wouldn't be able to stay in the minors for long.

Yastrzemski's injury gives him another chance to show the organization that he has what it takes to become an impact player in the major leagues.

However, how long he will stay on the show is uncertain.

Yastrzemski described his oblique strain as “minor” and is “glad it was caught so early.” He hopes to be back in action in 10 days.

For Winn, this is a disappointing development.

In his second year in the MLB, he looked like he could be a part of that rotation in the future, as he posted a 3.18 ERA in his first six starts this season. He spiraled out of control in May when he was forced out with right forearm discomfort and subsequently placed on the injured list.

This will be Winn's second stay on the injured list, which is never good for a young pitcher.

Willie Mays, the baseball legend who played center fielder for the New York and San Francisco Giants, has died. He was 93 years old.

The San Francisco Giants shared the news on their official X account (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday: “He leaves us with a lasting memory: to work hard and find joy in this great game and this extraordinary life. Say hey, Willie Mays. The best there ever was.”

“My father died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones,” his son Michael Mays told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the unwavering love you showed him over the years. You were his lifeblood.”

Mays, known as “Say Hey Kid,” played 22 seasons in the major leagues from 1951 until his retirement in 1973. He made his MLB debut with the Giants in New York and moved with the team to San Francisco in 1958. He finished his career with the New York Mets in 1973.

Mays, who posted a career batting average of .301, finished the season with 660 home runs, 3,293 hits, 1,909 runs batted in and 2,068 runs batted in. He was a two-time MVP, 24-time All-Star and 12-time Gold Glove Award winner. (He was the oldest living Hall of Famer in baseball.)

Despite a pay raise ahead of the 2024 season, the San Francisco Giants' revamped roster has failed to deliver on its promises, and a notable MLB insider has revealed which players they could trade at the trade deadline. Unfortunately, they won't be expensive additions: Blake Snell and Matt Chapman.

Heading into today's MLB games, the Giants sit with a disappointing 29-33 record, nine games out of first place in the tough National League West and a game and a half out of a wild card spot. Despite having a top-10 payroll and making some big free agent sales before the season began, the roster has significantly underperformed.

If they decide to make a salary change in the next few weeks, could Snell, Chapman and their expensive contracts be on the cards in the transfer talks?

In a column Tuesday, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan took a first look at which teams could be buyers and sellers before the deadline, and in his opinion the San Francisco Giants could go either way. However, he did have some disappointing news regarding Snell or Chapman moving forward.

However, the MLB insider mentioned that Michael Conforto is a “reasonable bet” to be shipped out of town, and there are several teams that “would love to sign LaMonte Wade Jr.” The next few weeks will determine what the organization does before July 30, but the loss of Jung Hoo Lee for the season and another recent injury to the 2023 C Young winner certainly doesn't help their chances of becoming buyers.

The San Francisco Giants won another game on Thursday to continue their winning streak. After winning seven of their last ten games, the Giants face difficult decisions as the transfer deadline approaches.

After taking steps to improve the roster in the offseason, will management already decide to give up on a team that was not healthy?

It's uncertain what they'll decide to do, but there are a lot of important decisions to be made. In the event that they do sell, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter has listed their most likely trade candidate, and it comes as quite a surprise.

Reuters wrote that Conforto could be traded.

“He'll have to pick up where he left off when he returns, and the Giants may have to budget some money to pay off his $18 million salary if they want a solid return on their young players, but he's a potentially impactful hitter in a market where offensive reinforcements are scarce.”

Although trading the veteran could bring them a decent return, it would be a questionable decision since he suffered a hamstring injury the season before. The 31-year-old Conforto posted a batting average of .280/.331/.490 with seven home runs.

Since many competing teams want to improve by the deadline, a left-handed player who can swing the bat like he does should be of interest to the clubs.

However, San Francisco has been playing better lately and their health will only improve. As things currently stand, they appear to be in great position to make the postseason with the Wild Card.

Once a team like the Giants is in the playoffs, anything can happen. Guys like Conforto, Jorge Soler, Blake Snell and others have been through it all before, which should give the front office confidence as it tries to make a decision on what to do before the July trade deadline.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out 11 in seven innings, Bryce Harper hit a three-run home run and Kyle Schwarber added a solo shot to help the Philadelphia Phillies earn a four-game win over the San Francisco Giants by 6 :1 to complete victory on Monday.

Harper singled deep against Giants rookie Mason Black, spoiling the major league debut of the Giants right-hander, who pitched in the fifth inning against the team he rooted for as a kid.

“I hope he enjoyed it with his family, his teammates and everything else because there is only one debut,” Harper said.

This season's Phillies are winning as many as the ones Black cheered for as a child.

The major league-leading Phillies (25-11) won their sixth straight and have won 10 of 11 and 17 of 20 to open a three-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East.

The Phillies have also won 10 straight games at Citizens Bank Park, just two wins shy of matching the team record set in 2012. Philadelphia also set a franchise record with 11 consecutive wins against NL West opponents.

“I feel like we win in different ways every night. And it's a completely different player who makes it big, be it a hitter or a pitcher. It’s never the same guy, which is nice,” catcher JT Realmuto said. “There is not too much pressure on a player. We all feel like we play really well together and have a lot of fun, and the guys contribute every night.”

Harper hit a home run for the second straight game and his eighth hit of the season made it 4-0 against Black (0-1). Black made his major league debut in front of his parents, younger brother, girlfriend and numerous friends and family who came to watch him play against his favorite childhood team.

The 24-year-old Black – rated the seventh-best prospect in baseball according to MLB.com – was the Giants' third-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Lehigh University. Black recorded a 1-2-3 first inning that included strikeouts by JT Realmuto and Harper, the latter of which was caught in the 88 mph changeup.

Black allowed eight hits, five runs and three walks. He struck out four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Wheeler (4-3) showed the rookie how it's done. He rebounded from an 0-3 start – he allowed a total of six runs in his first three starts – to win his fourth straight start. Wheeler allowed one run, walked one and lowered his ERA to 1.64.

“Today Wheels did what Zack does every time he goes out there. It was fun to watch and keep us in the game,” Harper said.

Matt Strahm pitched a scoreless eighth and Orion Kerkering pitched the ninth to complete the five.

With shortstop Trea Turner out for at least six weeks with a left hamstring strain, his replacements are starting to fill the void. Bryson Stott moved from second base to shortstop and snagged a great grounder from Wilmer Flores in the first to set up an inning-ending double play. Whit Merrifield started second and gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the fourth.

Harper had a three-run toss in the fifth and Nick Castellanos, who hit 37 doubles last season, got his first hit of the year later in the inning for a 5-0 lead.

Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm went 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at 18 games.

The Giants lost for the sixth time in seven games, falling 6-14 on the road. They lost two of three games in Boston and ended their 10-game trip with three games at Colorado, the only team behind San Francisco in the NL West. Maybe there will be a Mile High fortune change for the Giants — they are 18-8 at Coors Field with a plus-51 run differential since 2021.

“We need to clean up,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We have to play better. We left home one game under .500 and not playing very well. I thought (the road) could be a pretty good spot for us since we hadn't been playing well. And now we’re playing terribly.”
