OAKLAND (CBS/AP) — A sewage problem at the Coliseum forced the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners to use the same locker room after Sunday's game.

During Oakland's 10-2 victory, pipes in the stadium's lower levels burst, causing a stench and puddles of water in the clubhouses used by both teams and the referees.

The A's and Mariners moved to a higher floor and cleaned up after the game in the locker room used by the Oakland Raiders during NFL games.

Coliseum officials said the six-day homestand, which drew 171,756 fans, overwhelmed the 47-year-old stadium's plumbing system.

“Make sure everyone knows about this sewage thing,” Oakland starter AJ Griffin said. “We need a new stadium.”

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that leaking pipes and clogged drains are common, even on days when the Coliseum is empty. The playing field is 22 feet below sea level and the elevation of the clubhouse is 3 feet below sea level.

A's team president Michael Crowley told the Chronicle: “It's clear, right? This is not the first time something like this has happened.”

Several Mariners left without showering. Towels were used to prevent wastewater from entering the general players' changing area.

There was about a foot of liquid in Seattle manager Eric Wedge's office, forcing him to hold his postgame press conference in the hallway.

The A's, who begin a road trip to Texas on Monday night, will likely have new carpet when they return. The extent of the damage is not yet known.

There were visible wet spots around every drain on the ground floor, but the main damage was to the changing rooms and storage areas.

KCBS, SF Chronicle and KPIX Insider Phil Matier said there were more than 37,000 fans in the stadium for Sunday's Father's Day game.

“The A's are enjoying a major sellout stadium revival, tickets are sold out, the team is hot and owner Lew Wolff would like a new stadium, the problem is he would like it in San Jose and the Giants aren't above that happy.” “So for the last three years there's been a bit of a stalemate about where to build a new stadium,” Matier said.

Matier noted how much “sports construction” is currently taking place in the Bay Area, noting that the 49ers are building a billion-dollar stadium in Santa Clara, right next door to the A's' destination. The Warriors plan to build a $1 billion arena on the San Francisco waterfront.

“This takes advantage of a lot of the loose money that people have for sporting events, corporate sponsorships, skyboxes and all of these things that help fund stadiums,” he said.

“The big question is whether you can afford to build a completely new house instead of calling a plumber. I think in the short term they will have to call a plumber.”

DALY CITY, CALIF. – In some of America’s most expensive cities, residents are having to pack up and leave as rent prices rise. Inflation is keeping teachers from moving into these major cities like San Francisco in California, fueling the need for more staff when school districts are already struggling to hire.

Rent prices in San Francisco have gone up more 16% in the past year, the real estate company Redfin reported in June. The most recent teacher salary data shows that the average salary for teachers has gone down in the past decade by 3.2%, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. In California, the average salary is up 3.7%. Still, teachers say it doesn’t help with the rising costs of nearly everything.

“The prices here are astronomical,” Jefferson Union High School District Superintendent Toni Presta said. “We have teachers we want to hire, and they might be from across the country, and they can’t afford to live here,” she explained.

Even some people who live in the area struggle to afford the high cost of living. “It’s difficult to make ends meet with rent, food and other bills you have to pay and still have a life,” Davonte Byrd said.

The Jefferson Union High School District built a complex to accommodate teachers who can’t afford to live in the San Francisco suburb area.AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez

Byrd now works with the Jefferson Union High School District in San Mateo County, just outside of San Francisco. He was couch-surfing for several months until he was able to find a well-paying job and an affordable rent. In San Francisco, the median rent price is more than $3,750, according to Redfin. He’s paying half.

To help provide a solution for affordable housing while retaining and recruiting staff, the Jefferson Union High School District built an apartment complex for district employees on an empty parking lot that they already owned. The apartments are offered at almost half the market rate to employees. A $30 million bond was passed in 2018 by voters in the area to help build the complex. District leaders said the housing is helping.

“We started our year fully staffed, and most of neighboring school districts did not start the year fully staffed,” Presta said.

Rebecca Jasmin lives in the complex and works as a health teacher. She said she was couch-surfing as well until she could find an affordable place to live in the area.

“The rent that I was looking at, was like $2,200 per month, like a matchbox, a tiny little space,” she said. Jasmin left teaching previously because of low pay. She said having the housing makes it more affordable.

“People are able to live here, work here and afford it, and that’s really remarkable in the Bay Area,” Presta said.

Teachers have praised the Jefferson Union High School District for helping teachers to afford live near the schools.AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez

The complex features a courtyard with a playground for teachers with children.AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez

There are about 230,000 thousand less staff working in education across the country now compared to this time in 2019, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Low pay, the areas I wanted to be, the housing, it just wasn’t workable,” Jasmin said.

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug 24, 2023–

Thumbtack, the technology company helping millions of people confidently care for their homes, released new findings today from its Future of Skilled Trades Report. Thumbtack’s marketplace helps millions of people find and hire the right professional from its community of 300,000 local service businesses. Amid a worrying trend of the rapidly declining skilled trade labor force, the report provides an optimistic view of the future, with 47 percent of young adult respondents expressing interest in a trade profession and the vast majority (83 percent) believing that learning a skilled trade is sometimes a better pathway to economic security than going to college.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230824491929/en/

Why young adults are excited about the skilled trades over traditional office jobs. (Graphic: Business Wire)

The survey, which separately captured data from 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18-30 and 800+ US adults employed in the skilled trades, indicates that the skilled trades do not have a perception problem, with interest remaining strong. Instead, findings highlight a pathway problem as societal pressure, parental pressure and a lack of access to trade education continues to push young adults to higher education.

59 percent of respondents report having felt pressure to attend a 4-year college/university (56 percent feeling this pressure from family),

82 percent believe kids and teens are often incorrectly told that college is the only way to become successful in life,

48 percent didn’t have the opportunity to attend a trade high school, and

32 percent didn’t have the option to take a shop class in school.

“There’s never been a better time to enter the trades, and as a generation shaped by the pandemic and gig economy, Gen Z are uniquely suited to a profession that offers flexibility and independence,” said Marco Zappacosta, CEO and co-founder of Thumbtack. “With a lower barrier to entry than in the past and incredible demand for people to fill these roles, expertise in the trades is a future-proof career.”

To help drive greater access to the necessary education and resources, Thumbtack will pilot its Tools of the Trade Mentorship Sessions to connect the next generation of workers with local service business owners. Thumbtack’s top pros in a variety of trades from HVAC to plumbing will offer free virtual mentoring sessions focused on starting and running your own local service business to help young adults learn about careers in the trades. The program will be led by members of Thumbtack’s new, inaugural Pro AdvisoryBoard.

“Starting your own business can be intimidating, particularly for women in the trades who are entering a traditionally male-dominated field,” said Brittney Workman, founder of female-owned plumbing company Trade Pros and Thumbtack Pro Advisor. “My hope as a small business owner is to provide more readily-available support for the next generation, encouraging them to leave their comfort zone and explore different career paths. There will inevitably be roadblocks when starting your own business or learning a new trade and having a mentor can be a crucial part of successfully making that leap.”

Additional key takeaways from the report include:

Traits of skilled trade careers strongly resonate with young adults: Young adults have incredible respect for the skilled trades (73 percent), with medicine (77 percent) being the only career that commands respect from a higher proportion of young adults.

Young adults identified the biggest benefits of a skilled trade over a traditional office job as having a flexible schedule (82 percent), faster educational program (82 percent), less expensive education and/or less debt (82 percent), quicker entry into the workforce (82 percent) and an ability to be your own boss (81 percent).

What’s more, 74 percent believe skilled trades jobs won’t be replaced by AI.

Skilled trade professionals highly recommend a career in the trades: 94 percent of skilled trade pros would encourage their own kids or family to pursue a skilled trade and a majority (87 percent) would choose their career again if given the opportunity.

87 percent of skilled trade workers are happy with their jobs—compared with the 51 percent of young adults who say they’re extremely or very satisfied.

95 percent are optimistic about their job security and believe they won’t be replaced by AI

Future of Skilled Trades Report Methodology:

Sample A of 1000 U.S. young adults (aged 18-30) was surveyed on July 18 and 19, 2023. Sampling was calibrated to reflect even gender and geographical distribution. DKC Analytics conducted and analyzed this survey with a sample procured using the Pollfish survey delivery platform, which delivers online surveys globally through mobile apps and the mobile web along with the desktop web. No post-stratification has been applied to the results.

Sample B of 837 U.S. adults, consisting of 659 completes and 178 partial completes, was surveyed between June 21 and July 17, 2023. All respondents in Sample B are primarily employed in the skilled trades in home construction, home maintenance or home systems via self-confirmation. Thumbtack conducted this survey via link sharing through their internal email list. No post-stratification has been applied to the results.

“There wasn’t much going on other than a classroom filled with smoke,” Rio Vista fire chief Jeff Armstrong said in a phone interview.

There were no injuries.

The students had already been cleared from the room when Locomotive 55 and Battalion 55 arrived at the scene, about 3 minutes after the alarm went off at 1:04 p.m.

“En route, Dispatch provided an update that a 9-1-1 caller said classroom #9 was filling with smoke from an unknown source. Upon receiving this information, Battalion 55 immediately stepped up its “first alert” response. This level response deploys four engines and/or a ladder truck, a chief officer and an ambulance,” Armstrong said in a statement.

The next step was confirmation that the room was available.

The investigation then revealed that a small fire had broken out in the heating and air conditioning system on the roof.

“The fire was confirmed and firefighters were assisting maintenance personnel in making the building safe and clearing the smoke from the classroom,” the chief said in a statement.

The department and school also confirmed that all students were accounted for, the chief said.

Mutual aid was provided by the Isleton and Suisun City Fire Brigades and Medic Ambulance. Rio Vista police also responded and helped with traffic control.

CARMEL (CBS SF) — Winds topping 65 mph roared through Northern California early Saturday fueling a wildfire racing through the hills in the Palo Colorado Canyon near Big Sur, forcing evacuations and a blaze near Geysers Peak in Sonoma County.

Cal Fire said as of Saturday evening, the fire had burned 1,050 acres, down from the original estimate due to better mapping. They said containment had grown to 20%.

UPDATE: Air Attack, Calming Winds Aid Firefighters Battling Wildfire Near Big Sur; Containment Grows To 25 Percent

“The fire lined up with the wind and the terrain and that gave the fire a lot of energy to make a big run,” said Cecile Juliette, a spokesperson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The National Weather Service issued high wind warnings and advisories throughout Northern California. A warning for the North Bay mountains was extended to 4 pm Saturday. Winds topping 70 mph howled over Mount Diablo and a gust in the Healdsburg Hills was clocked at 96 mph and 94 mph at the nearby Pine Flat Road weather station.

It was unclear what caused the fire.

Fire officials said it’s uncommon to have a fire of this size burning in the winter. They said this is another reminder California’s fire season is year-round.

“The winds absolutely played a huge part in what happened last night. We had wind gusts of up to 50 miles an hour,” said Juliette. “Everything is just so dry that it just really allowed this fire to spread very rapidly in the middle of winter.”

The National Weather Service said while Monterey County had a good amount of rain from late October to December, there was no measurable rain in January. They added the area burning had little or no fire history.

“The timing is quite unique because in January, we generally don’t have a lot of fires,” said Dr. Craig Clements, Director of the Wildfire Research Center at San Jose State.

“Given the fact that we haven’t had rain at all in January and we had a big off-shore wind event, these are the conditions that lead to wildfires typically in the Fall, not in January. So it’s just something that’s quite surprising,” said Dr. Clements.

Even thought there was a lot of rain late last year, Dr. Clements said several years of extreme drought mean there’s still a lot of dry fuel out there.

“If we pick up our precipitation, our snowpack in the Sierra in February and March, then we might get back to normal,” said Dr. Clements.

“It no longer makes sense to refer to fire season as something that just happens three months out of the year. It’s a year-round thing in California now and we anticipate that it could get worse,” said Juliette.

Cal Fire said because of the constant threat, people who live in fire-prone areas should stay vigilant and be ready to evacuate at all times.

The blustery conditions quickly spread the two wildfires. Cal Fire officials reported that crews were responding to a wildfire in the Palo Colorado Canyon north of Big Sur at around 7:30 pm Friday.

The flames spread on the hillsides still tinder-dry from months of drought conditions. Rains in late December had eased through conditions but January has been extremely dry again.

“Fire has remained stubbornly active overnight,” National Weather Service forecasters said. “Pictures on social media suggest some pretty surreal fire behavior given the wet Oct and Dec that was observed across the region with multiple atmospheric river events. Looking at historical fire data it appears the fire is burning south of Palo Colorado and towards Bixby Creek along Long Ridge in an area with little or no fire history.”

“Anecdotally, it seems as though the long-term drought is acting like a chronic illness where even recent rains and cold winter weather isn’t helping to keep fires from developing.”

Wildfires this time of year have been a rarity.

“It’s unusual to have fire this size here on the coast at the end of January,” Juliette said. “The fact that we had a fire this size is of great concern.”

By 11 pm mandatory evacuation orders had been issued with an American Red Cross shelter being set up at Carmel Middle School. Residents quickly fled on roadways covered by clouds of blowing embers. The flames jumped Highway 1, burned below the famed Bixby Bridge and were visible from as far away as the famed Pebble Beach golf links.

The concrete bridge spans the deep and wild canyon along the highway and has been the backdrop of many car commercials, movies and TV shows, most recently the HBO drama “Big Little Lies.”

Authorities made contact with about 500 residents, urging them to evacuate the sparsely populated area between Carmel and Big Sur. More than 250 firefighters from multiple agencies and volunteer groups, aided by water-dropping aircraft, contained about 20% of the blaze by Saturday evening.

“The winds have died down and that has worked in our favor,” Juliette said Saturday evening.

The California Highway Patrol closed Highway 1 at Rio Road just outside of Carmel-by-the-Sea due to the fire. From south of the fire, Highway 1 was closed at Andrew Molera State Park, just north of Big Sur.

The area affected by the evacuations was for residents living along Palo Colorado Road from Highway 1 east to the Rocky Creek Bridge and Bixby Creek Road. It was not immediately known how many homes were being threatened in the rural area.

Lake Evacuation Zone Map

“Looking back at last evening the fire appeared to start during the peak offshore winds and very low humidity,” the weather service said. “The strongest offshore winds have now ended in the vicinity of the Colorado Fire. As of 3 am, the current weather is showing relative humidity values 42-52% with southerly winds around 5 mph. These light south winds will represent a potential change that residents and firefighters should monitor today.”

Video showed a wall of flames roaring across the picturesque hillsides while Cal Fire deployed assets from as far away as the Bay Area. Cal Fire’s CZU unit in San Mateo County sent 4 fire engines to help battle the blaze.

Meanwhile, a second wind-swept fire erupted in the hills near Geysers Peak Road after midnight. It grew to about 5 acres before responding crews were able to get a handle on the blaze.

Winds were whipping through the region at the time of the fire. A gust in the Healdsburg Hills was clocked at 96 mph and 94 mph at the nearby Pine Flat Road weather station.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Police released a video on Wednesday of officers shooting a knife-wielding man who attacked them in a residential hotel.

Ajmal Amani, 41, was shot dead in the narrow hallway of the building on the South of Market Friday morning after threatening several people with a large kitchen knife. He was shot in the stomach and leg and died in the hospital.

Amani was a former Afghan US special forces interpreter who had been shot multiple times in more than five years of service and struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder, his former attorney, case manager and real estate administrator told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Amani was charged with fatal assault in 2019 for allegedly slashing a city park ranger with a cutter who said he appeared to be in an “altered state of mind”.

Amani was ordered to undergo a mental distraction, which he completed this year while living in a city-rented room in the residential hotel.

Police were called to the hotel on Friday morning after a man yelled and screamed and had a knife. Amani’s case manager also called 911 to report a colleague said Amani was having “a really bad episode.”

On Wednesday, police released video and footage from hotel surveillance from officers’ body cameras. They show Amani holding the knife and gesturing with it, confronting two people, including someone who fends off him with a broom, and then walking past other people into a room.

When two police officers arrive, the man with the broom tells them that Amani threatened to kill him.

An officer tells the radio operator that they can hear Amani screaming.

According to the body camera video, the officers stay in the hallway and try to speak to Amani, who is in a room. Amani swears and tells them to leave him alone and an officer says, “Nobody wants to hurt you.”

Less than a minute later, Amani storms down the hall and is shot after an officer yells, “Stay there! Stay here!”

According to police, Amani was holding a knife with a 6-inch blade. He was shot four times with a handgun and three times with beanbag bullets.

When Amani was on the ground and still moving, more officers came. They waited several minutes to carefully approach him, then handcuffed him and used CPR and a tourniquet on him before the paramedics arrived.

At a town hall virtual meeting where the video was released, Police Chief Bill Scott said his department and prosecutors were investigating the shooting. Scott said he personally offered condolences to Amani’s family.

Scott Grant, an assistant public defender who represented Amani, said he was “utterly devastated” by his death.

Grant said Amani suffered “incredible trauma and violence” while serving in the US Forces.

“His tragic death is a failure of our systems of government here to support someone who risked their life to support this country,” Grant told KTVU-TV.

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) – A broken HVAC heater on the roof filled a school in Santa Rosa with carbon monoxide fumes Thursday morning, making students sick and forcing the building to be evacuated, authorities said.

According to the Santa Rosa Fire Department, the crews were dispatched to Bridge Church at 301 Fulton Road at 10:26 a.m.

Arriving firefighters found an orderly evacuation in the two-story building that houses both the church and the Grace Christian Academy.

Students and teachers at the school informed the fire department that there was an odor in the building. Numerous students and several staff complained of symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon monoxide.

Firefighters used a 4-gas monitor to determine the presence of carbon monoxide in several classrooms and hallways in the building.

A total of 12 students and two staff members complained of symptoms related to carbon monoxide exposure, were treated, and were released at the scene.

Upon further investigation by firefighters and PG&E crews, it was found that the source of the carbon monoxide was an HVAC unit on the school roof that provides heat to several classrooms.

The HVAC unit was covered with tarpaulin due to a water leak during the recent rain. When the HVAC unit was turned on to provide heat, the tarpaulin was preventing the clean air from circulating properly.

After the tarpaulin was removed, the HVAC unit was working properly. The rest of the HVAC units on the roof have been tested and found to be correct.

The city received multiple reports of flooding, fallen trees and power lines early Sunday afternoon, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department.

“We have several dozen homes in the process of being evacuated, with rapid water rescue teams as well as our high-profile wildland fire engines pulling door to door to get people out of harm’s way as the water continues to rise in the neighborhood,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal .

Officials asked residents in the area to remove their belongings from the ground floor and garage due to the rising water. All residents in low areas were encouraged to do the same.

During the evacuation, residents of two houses needed help and the city called services to help them. City buses were also dispatched to help the evacuees.

The city is working to lower the flood. Debris will be removed from the drainage areas and drains will be cleared so the water can flow properly, Mertens said.

HomeLight’s latest report confirms that the value of accessory homes (ADUs) has increased nearly 40% since pre-COVID, with 61% of agents agreeing that the most common use is to house homeowners’ parents; Meanwhile, golf community real estate has grown in value by 48%, driven by the increased interest shown by 30- and 40-year-olds in the game during the pandemic

SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) October 18, 2021

HomeLight, the real estate technology platform that is transforming the home buying and selling process for the top real estate agents and their clients, today released its Top Agent Insights 2021 Year-End Report, surveying over 1,000 top real estate agents on key drivers that will shape tomorrow’s living real estate market.

As the market settles into a quieter fall season – 62% of brokers report bidding wars have decreased compared to just 3% last quarter – new trends in multigenerational housing, the growing popularity of accessory housing (ADUs), and more and more young people, those who move to golf communities once known for retirees have emerged. The report paints a curious picture of how the pandemic has changed the meaning of “home” for retirees, their families and millennials after the housing craze.

More than a third of real estate agents saw an increase in ADUs in the past year, according to HomeLight. The value of ADUs has increased nationwide by 38% since pre-COVID times, from $ 47,597 to $ 65,908.

This trend is more pronounced in the Pacific and mountain regions, where ADUs have historically been used as an affordable housing solution and 64% and 47% of agents, respectively, have seen an increase in these units since March 2020. The value of an ADU is highest in the Pacific region, adding an average of $ 116,931 to properties.

Surprisingly, ADUs are also gaining in importance in regions where they have not always been so popular, such as the Midwest. The ADU value rose the most in the Midwest of any region nationwide, showing an average increase of 54% compared to 38% nationwide.

The two most common uses of an ADU in Germany are to accommodate the owner’s parents living there (a trend cited by 61% of agents) or to support adult children who need temporary accommodation for financial reasons (35%). In third place are short-term tenants (tourists or vacationers). 32% of brokers state that these guests are likely to have ADUs in their market.

Parent living is by far the most common use. This applies to all regions, although it’s a particularly prominent trend in the southern part of the US, where 67% of agents report that local homeowners often have parents who live in their ADU.

“We’re not seeing an influx of ADUs being used for short-term rentals, but we do have many buyers wanting an ADU for their aging parents,” said poll participant Aaron Kinn, a top real estate agent on the HomeLight network that serves the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas. “This has been a common concern of many of our buyers since the outbreak of the pandemic in early 2020. They assume the room will be perfect for in-laws, and if not – it would be perfect for a second office location away from the others “of the house.”

As the report shows, an increasing number of near-retirees are withdrawing with their children in an effort to increase the popularity of multi-generational homes exclusively for older adults.

The value of a property in a golf community has increased nationwide by 48% since March 2020, from $ 16,174 to $ 24,002.

The Northeast and Midwest saw the highest increases in value that a Gulf community location adds to a property at 57% and 55%, respectively.

Nearly a third of agents in the Pacific and mountain regions also say that in the past year, people in their thirties and forties were more likely to adopt the country club lifestyle than they did before COVID. Around a fifth of brokers in the Midwest have also noticed this unexpected trend – and how buyer preferences in their market have changed.

“There is a growing interest among younger people to settle near a golf course or golfing community,” said survey participant Kim Batterman, a top real estate agent on the HomeLight network in Appleton, Wisconsin. “In the past few years it was mainly people in partial retirement or retirement who wanted this type of property.”
