The cold, rainy weather and holiday season may have you thinking about roasting chestnuts on an open fire.

While some folks may be using natural gas-fueled fireplaces, some still use wood-burning fireplaces. The U.S. Fire Administration says heating fires account for 36 percent of residential home fires in rural areas every year.

Emergency Management officials have some reminders to make your fireplace and fire safe:

Have your fireplace cleaned by a professional. A chimney sweep will clean out the entire chimney. Many use a high-powered vacuum so that there is no soot or dust entering the home. Some sweeps also offer a series of inspections of the chimney, interior flue and checks of attic spaces for any damaged areas that will need repair.
Choose firewood carefully. Seasoned firewood — wood that has been allowed to dry out for at least six months — is the best and safest option. Buying one or two cords of wood may take the average fireplace user through the season. Wood can also be purchased at supermarkets or picked up free in different areas.
Avoid wood from trees that have just been cut down. It likely contains high levels of moisture that will result in more smoke than burn power, and could lead to creosote deposits forming on the inside of the chimney.
Synthetic logs are also available, but use caution because they may burn unevenly and put out highter levels of carbon monoxide. Follow directions on the packages of these products carefully.
Inspect your fireplace screen or guard to ensure it can safely protect against embers escaping the fireplace. In homes where there are young children, an added barrier may be needed in front of the fireplace to prevent little hands from touching the hot screen.
Remember to open the chimney flue before starting any fire. This allows fresh air to feed the fire and will enable smoke to exit the home. Failure to open the flue can result in smothering, dirty smoke filling the home quite quickly. The flue should be closed after the fire is completely extinguished so that animals and outside debris don’t enter the home via the opening.
Have a metal container for removing and storing hot ashes handy. Embers and ashes can stay hot for quite some time, so they should be placed outdoors, ideally far from the home so they don’t set anything ablaze.
Educate household members about the rules of fireplace use. Do not burn anything but wood in the fire to avoid the emission of toxic fumes or dangerous embers. All it takes is one stray ember to start a huge fire. Also, improper fuel materials may lead to the buildup of flammable creosote on the chimney.

Changing hearth brick is not simple however price it

Q: I’d like to remove my fireplace brick, but it goes all the way up from the hearth to the ceiling. Is it possible to remove the brick and replace it with another material? After removal, what type of material should I use to cover things up? Is there something that I can use that will still allow me to use the fireplace?

A: Yes, you can remove the brick facade and replace it with another material. And you will still be able to use the fireplace. The only restriction is that the material around the firebox must be noncombustible. Common choices are marble, some other type of stone or tile.

Check your local building code to determine how far the hearth must extend in front of the firebox and the area on the sides and top of the opening that require noncombustible material. Expect 8 to 12 inches on the top and sides and a minimum of 18 inches for the hearth. When it comes to the hearth, the deeper, the better. There’s nothing worse than a hot ember that burns a hole in the carpet. The remainder of the wall can be any material you want, from drywall to plaster to the rustic appearance of wood.

The removal process is fairly labor intensive, but if you do the demolition yourself you’ll save a bunch of money. Furthermore, if you do the whole job yourself, all you’ll be out is the cost of materials. Go slowly, be careful and you’ll be fine. When you’re done you’ll have a spiffy new look for pennies on the dollar.

You will need a hammer and a cold chisel. If you want to make quicker work of it, rent a small electric demolition hammer.

Make sure to remove any breakable objects from the area and cover the floor. Dropping a brick from 8 or 9 feet in the air is not a good idea. Have a helper handy to receive and stack the bricks when you remove them.

To remove the old brick, start at the top and work down. Begin by chiseling the mortar on the top line of brick. It might be a little tough to remove the first brick, but once you pry it out, the others should follow more easily. Remove one brick at a time. Work down the wall until all of the face bricks, including any mantel you might have, are removed. Then remove the bricks from the hearth.

With the wall and the firebox opening stripped, you’re ready to reface.

It’s vital to have a flat, solid surface on which to affix the new stone, tile or marble. For larger, flat pieces of tile or marble, you can either plaster a mortar bed over the existing brick to create a substrate or you can affix cement board such as Durock with thinset mortar. Use concrete nails to hold the cement board in place. When the mortar dries, you’ll have a solid, flat surface.

If you use smaller, irregular material, such as individual stones, you can forgo the cement board. Just apply a thick layer of mortar and embed the new material. In both cases you will have to pretreat the old brick with a concrete adhesive to allow the new mortar to stick to the old brick.

A word of caution: If you decide to use material that is very heavy, make sure the floor framing will support the weight. You might have to go into the crawlspace to install a couple of concrete piers with a beam across the floor joists to support the added load. Also, if you decide on stone or another type of brick, you’ll need a steel bar across the top span of the firebox to support that weight.

Two final suggestions: This is a good time to have your fireplace inspected by a licensed, bonded chimney sweep. Also, it’s likely that your project will require a building permit. Make sure you get one.

Q:My husband and I have been frustrated by a problem since we moved into our circa-1965 house two years ago. The double-sided fireplace spews so much smoke that it’s unusable.

Two chimney sweeps have told me it doesn’t need to be cleaned and that these types of fireplaces just never work properly. Their only suggestion was to install a wood-burning stove inside the fireplace. There’s no way we will do this.

The fireplace has two flues, which we’ve opened every time we’ve built a fire. Is there anything you can suggest to get this fireplace to draw?

A: A wood-burning stove inside a fireplace? That’s nuts. There are a number of things you can try that may fix your problem.

To begin with, it’s important that you understand a couple of basic laws of thermodynamics. First, hot air rises and cold air sinks. Second, fire requires combustion air. Simply put, to work properly, a fireplace needs cooler air entering the firebox to replace the hot air, smoke and gases that leave via the chimney. The proper balance of cold and hot allows the fireplace to draw.

We can think of a number of reasons your fireplace smokes you out. You’ve dealt with the first couple by having a chimney sweep out and making sure the damper is open. Here are some other causes and possible cures:

— Wood should be dry and aged for at least one year. Hardwoods are best. They are denser and give off less smoke. Split the wood so that it burns efficiently. Avoid construction debris, as there’s no telling what chemicals it might contain. Even if it’s chemical free, Douglas fir and pine burn hot and fast and create creosote buildup in the chimney. If you burn pine or fir regularly, have a chimney sweep clean yearly.

— The rack where you place the wood should be placed directly under the damper. Raising the grate on bricks helps create more combustion air under the fire and gets the fire closer to the chimney opening.

— Two-sided fireplaces have inherent problems with draw. They’re hit with drafts from both sides. Installing glass doors can solve this problem by cutting off air from one side of the fireplace to start and containing the hot air once the fire gets going.

— Have an experienced mason check the height of the chimney. Extending the height of the chimney should improve the draw.

— If it is either cold and/or raining, the air inside the flue will probably be cold and heavy, blocking the smoke from venting. Every time you build a fire, prime the chimney by rolling up a newspaper and lighting it, then holding the lit end close to the open damper inside the firebox to warm up the air in the flue. This has the effect of coaxing the warm air to go in the right direction – outside, not into the house.

— Turn the heater off when you start a fire. Gas furnaces also need combustion air – the same air the fireplace needs. If the heater is on, there is competition for the same air. If the furnace wins, you get smoked out.

— Houses are built or retrofitted much tighter than they used to be. Air pressure inside the house can be different from outside. This can slow air drawn through the flue and limit combustion air, resulting in a smoky fire. When you light a fire, crack open a window or door until it gets going.

— Finally, consider hiring a mason to install an air pipe from the outside into the firebox.

Our advice is to do the cost-free stuff first, try the glass doors second and if you don’t get the desired result, consult with a good masonry contractor about general design and chimney height. We wish you many a cozy evening and, if you get a chance, let us know how things turn out.

Runaway hearth blaze damages Olema Home lodge close to Level Reyes

A fire that broke out in the fireplace in the lobby of the popular Olema House Hotel near Point Reyes late Friday damaged the lobby, attic and four guest rooms but did not cause any injuries, Marin County Fire Department reported.

Water damage was also reported.

When the fire department arrived shortly after 11 p.m., thick smoke came from the roof of the three-story hotel on Highway 1. About two hours later, 40 firefighters had the fire under control.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Marin County Fire Department battalion chief Bret McTigue, who said additional firefighters happened to be on standby at Point Reyes Station due to the increased risk of forest fires. They were also supported by firefighters from Inverness, Bolinas and Stinson Beach.

McTigue said the fire in the fireplace got out of control when additional fuel was added to a compressed log of sawdust that was already burning. That started a fire in the chimney that spread to the attic, he said.

The firefighters were assisted by “built-in alarm and detection systems” installed by the hotel that automatically alerted the firefighters, McTigue said.

The upscale hotel and restaurant, where rooms are $ 275 a night and a hamburger is $ 18, will remain closed for the rest of the week, hotel officials said. The guests were moved to other hotels.
