Earlier this week, the Sundance Film Festival announced it is exploring its options to move to a new venue in 2027, after the prestigious festival was hosted in Park City, Utah for the last 43 of its 46 years. And SF will be throwing its hat in the ring.

“We are at a unique moment for our festival and our global film community, and with the contract up for renewal, this exploration allows us to think responsibly about how we can best continue to serve our community sustainably while preserving the essence of the festival experience,” festival director and head of public programs Eugene Hernandez said in a statement.

Hernandez doesn't say it, but it seems the festival's relationship with the small ski town of Park City has been strained in recent years, especially as the festival has grown in size and prestige. As the Chronicle notes, locals there complain about the noise of helicopters every January when Hollywood's elite helicopters arrive from Salt Lake City. And due to space constraints, the festival has in recent years held more programs in Salt Lake City itself.

Along with the festivals in Toronto, Berlin, Venice and Cannes, Sundance remains one of the “Big Five” of the annual film festival circuit.

And as the Chronicle's G. Allen Johnson writes, “Sundance belongs out West.” As for territory, if it were held in New York, it would get in the way of the Toronto and Tribeca film festivals. Austin already has South by Southwest. And San Francisco has already partnered with Sundance to host drive-ins at Fort Mason during the pandemic, along with the Roxie in the Mission. (The SF Film Festival may be less pleased about being overshadowed, though.)

Manijeh Fata, executive director of the San Francisco Film Commission, confirmed to the Chronicle that the city is applying to the Sundance Film Festival to host the film in future years. Letters of interest must be submitted by May 1, and the application process runs from May 7 to June 1.

We know that Minneapolis also wants to make a bid (brrr!), and we'll have to wait and see what happens with the other competitors.

Don't get too excited by the title of the new Norwegian film, “Sex.” The act itself is actually only briefly discussed in this fascinating film, the first in a new trilogy from writer-director Dag Johan Haugerud, relying mostly on the words and descriptions of the main characters rather than much visual information. Haugerud, winner of the Europa Cinemas label for best European film in the Panorama section of the current Berlin Film Festival, where it had its world premiere this week, has announced this as the first of three films – “Sex, Dreams” and then “Love” – with the same cast and which, overall, will explore themes of desire, identity and freedom, not to mention sexuality and the place of gender in our lives and society. This first standalone film also leans heavily on masculinity in ways not usually discussed by men, but here they do in a profound way in this thought-provoking film that also puts Norway's most famous city, Oslo, in the spotlight.

Haugerud's dialogue-driven script is full of monologues delivered in conversational dialogues with either two male colleagues (never named) from a chimney sweeping company and/or their wives. It begins with the boss (Thorbjørn Harr) telling an unseen person about a dream in which he encounters David Bowie, who thinks he is a woman. The dream is described in detail and clearly disturbs him, as he has never experienced such a vivid depiction of gender, his sex and his image from the perspective of others, in such a graphic situation, whether in a dream or not. The camera soon reveals that he is not speaking to a therapist (my first thought) but to a colleague (Jan Gunnar Røise), who then decides, albeit hesitantly at first, to tell of a recent real-life encounter he had with a man in the kitchen of a house where he was working on the chimney, a stranger who, he says, saw him as an object of desire and asked him point blank if he wanted to have sex with him. He tells his colleague that he immediately refused – they are both married – but that he quickly returned after leaving and, he says, ended up having sex with the man. What's more, he even tells his wife (Siri Forberg) all about it in a matter-of-fact way afterwards.

More from Deadline

One can imagine that the story didn't go down well, and for the rest of the 2 hours and 5 minutes, her character is all about becoming more and more deeply disturbed about what this all means, not just for their marriage, but for her, her family, and whether her husband is actually gay. In these intimate and lengthy conversations, he assures everyone that just because he did it once with a man doesn't mean he's an alcoholic. Harr's character also confesses to his wife (a more understanding Birgitte Larsen) his own strange dreams in which David Bowie sees him as a woman, and has to digest the fact that this has more of an impact on his marriage than on his lifelong understanding of his identity and the way he is seen.

Once we're past these heavy, if sometimes tedious, discussions, Haugerud manages to lighten things up a bit, as Harr's character takes his son Hans Petter (Adrian Jenure Skaaland) to a doctor (a wonderfully incisive and natural Anne Marie Ottersen) to examine the boy's injured hand, but at the same time asks her about his own ailments. In a somewhat whimsical way, she begins a story about two young gay men, one of whom is seriously ill. Haugerud suddenly thrusts us into flashbacks to tell this story within a story. I, for one, was glad to get out of the claustrophobic conversations sparked by the chimney sweeps' revelations and into something else, anything else. The slow and deliberate pacing, with minimal camera movement in so many scenes between them and their wives, makes everything seem longer than it is.

Aside from that, Sex is full of wry observations about human behavior and life's unanswered questions about who we really are. The superbly chosen actors, especially Røise and Harr, tell the story in a subdued, almost deadpan style. The camerawork, which also puts Oslo himself in the spotlight, is masterfully executed by Cecile Semec. And as befits such a profound film, it all ends with a musical dance sequence – of course – in which Harr's character performs on stage with his choir while Røise's character and his entire family, now seemingly content to carry on with their lives as before, watch from the audience. No explanations are needed, but perhaps we'll get one as the trilogy moves into the next chapter.

Producers are Yngve Saether and Hege Hauff Hvattum.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Sundance Institute is considering a relocation after its current partnership with Park City, Utah, expires in 2026. The city of San Francisco will apply to be the new host.

Moviegoer and publicist Karen Larsen says she's not sure it's a good idea.

“I think San Francisco already has too many festivals,” Larsen said. “There is a festival for everything here, including dogs.”

The Sundance Institute opened a “request for information” this month, inviting cities to submit proposals explaining why they should host the festival starting in 2027.

San Francisco is expected to be one of many cities bidding for the role, but Larsen believes Park City is part of the festival's appeal.

“I thought it was strange because Sundance was founded in Utah. That was the whole point. It was a destination festival like Telluride, so it was kind of surprising news,” Larsen said.

She understands why they might consider other options. She used to attend Sundance, but hasn't been there in recent years.

“It’s really cold, really difficult to get around,” Larsen said. “It’s hard to work there.”

She admitted that San Francisco would have nicer weather and more hotels available for the festival.

Suzanne Pfeifer waited in line to see one of the films at the San Francisco International Film Festival. She says she has conflicting opinions.

“I think it would be wonderful. I just don’t want it to have a negative impact on the San Francisco Film Festival,” Pfeifer said. “But if it’s a different time of year, I think it would work well here. This festival sells out every year.”

In a statement, Gloria Chan of the SF Office of Economic and Workforce Development said, “The city can confirm that we will comply with the RFI (Request For Information) proposal. San Francisco is a center for artistic expression that offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty, providing filmmakers and visitors with an unparalleled setting with the infrastructure and amenities to immerse themselves in the magic of cinema. From our bustling neighborhoods to the tranquil shores of the bay, every corner of the city pulses with energy and inspiration, capturing the imaginations of storytellers and audiences alike.

“San Francisco is one of the most cinematic cities in the world – one that showcases independent and innovative storytelling, cultural vibrancy and creativity from filmmakers like Joe Talbot (The Last Black Man of San Francisco), Marielle Heller (The Diary of a “Teenager Girl”) and Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy),” Chan said. “San Francisco is the perfect backdrop for the Sundance Film Festival and has a rich history of celebrating the groundbreaking works of independent filmmakers from around the world.”

Many films had their world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, which usually takes place in January. They then attend other festivals later in the year.

Larsen says if Sundance actually came to SF, she thinks it would impact the festivals already happening here.

“Like this festival, the Asian Film Festival, which is happening in two weeks, all the films will be picked up at Sundance,” Larsen noted.

The Sundance Institute continues to collect proposals through May 1.

The final location is expected to be announced in late 2024 or early 2025.

On Monday, the Indigenous Peoples Day Festival was held for the fifth consecutive year at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. This event was organized in collaboration with the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) to celebrate and honor the traditions and heritage of Native Americans.

Art exhibits, music performances and vendor stalls were set up at the garden’s public park and cultural space on Monday afternoon with many people stopping by to purchase items or watch the cultural events.

Among the performers was a Mexican native group called Grupo de los Wawas del Centro Ceremonial de Tajín hailing from Veracruz, Mexico. The group belongs to the Totonaco Nation, which is primarily based in east-central Mexico.

Group leader Vidal Perez has been performing a traditional dance called “Danza de Voladores” and one called “Danza de Wawa” for over 30 years. This dance has been passed down through several generations of men in his family.

“We do this dance to celebrate Mother Earth, so that she brings rain, a plentiful harvest and good energy,” Perez said.

He said that they tour all over California, performing for a few weeks before heading back to Mexico to continue expressing their culture through dance. He pointed out that they come to events like this because it allows both Native American and Mexican groups to recognize and celebrate the resilience of communities that strive to preserve their cultural heritage despite enduring a long history of colonization.

TrendingFree Hazardous Waste, Mattress Drop-Off Event Coming to Richmond

“We want people to remember that there are still old customs and cultures to learn about. No matter where we live, the point is to acknowledge where we came from,” Perez said.

Cristina Ibarra, a Yerba Buena Gardens employee who is co-organizer for the event, said that this festival is her favorite one to put on each year. She said working with all the vendors and performers has been the best experience, likening it to being in the company of family.

“It’s so beautiful to see all the families, especially the elders and the kids, celebrating their culture,” Ibarra said. “We do probably 150 events every year and this is still one of my favorites.”

Ibarra stated that this year’s festival has seen the biggest turnout since its inception. She affirmed that they’ll continue to host this event in the future as a platform to “uplift Indigenous Peoples voices.”

In 2018, San Francisco made the decision to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day as a means of acknowledging and addressing the historical violence and discrimination faced by Native Americans in the U.S.

Andrea Carmen, the executive director of the IITC since the ’90s, said every city and county on this side of the hemisphere should consider revising this date on their local calendars. Instead of honoring Christopher Columbus, Carmen suggested to celebrate the people impacted by the explorer’s arrival.

“We’re celebrating our survival, the resiliency and strength of our cultures that still exist. We’re honoring our ancestors that sacrificed unbelievable amounts of suffering so that we could have these ways, the dances, the language,” Carmen said.

Carmen observed that it’s been over 500 years since colonization began in the Americas. She stressed that the IITC is committed to preserving their history and teaching it to those who are willing to learn.

She said it’s important for non-Natives to know that there is an ongoing struggle to revitalize languages, reclaim stolen land and preserve tareas that once belonged to Natives. She added that despite the horrors that Natives have endured, they’re still standing.

“We’re still here, our culture is still strong, and the amazing thing to me is that we’re still willing to share it with those very descendants of the ones that carried these things [colonization] out,” Carmen said.

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Ballet is the oldest ballet company and school in the country. This year it is celebrating its 90th anniversary and next week its students will take the stage for a very special presentation called the Spring Festival.

18-year-old trainee Jacey Gailliard has been preparing for the big presentation since the start of the school year in August.

She spends six days a week, nearly eight hours a day, perfecting her moves at the San Francisco Ballet School.

The Pennsylvania native said she dreamed of attending school since she was 12 after completing a summer program here.

When she turned 15, her mother finally agreed to let her make the move on her own.

“It’s really been a part of my life since I was three years old. I always knew I loved to dance and just wanted to be on stage,” Gailliard said. “I think a lot of people don’t realize how many sacrifices that requires.”

One of her biggest challenges is taking classes in the evening after a full day of ballet school and moving away from her parents.

This year, Gailliard applied to join the company as an apprentice, and she made it. Only half of the twelve trials were accepted.

“Ultimately, my dream is to inspire young girls — especially African-American ballet dancers, who aren’t as represented in the ballet world as other ethnic groups,” she said. “And just being able to dance as many works and styles as I can as long as my body allows me to.”

Gailliard is among dozens of SF Ballet School students whose year’s work culminates in this year’s 30th Spring Festival.

It will be the final performance for SF Ballet School and incoming program director Patrick Armand, who joined the company in 2010. In 2012 he became deputy director of the school.

“As an artist, I’ve always wanted people to be moved and then let themselves be carried away like we do on stage,” said Armand. “The Spring Festival is even more emotional because it’s younger people. They’re not adults yet, but they’re absolutely amazing dancers already.”

Armand aims to make the art form more inclusive and accessible.

One of his achievements was the development of a special dance program for people with Parkinson’s disease. Armand said his mother had Parkinson’s disease and that he wanted to create a space in the community in her honor.

“Ballet is for everyone. Ballet can be therapeutic, it can just be life-changing,” he said.

During his tenure, more than 70 percent of the school’s students became professional dancers with SF Ballet.

“I love the work of getting on stage and you can really feel the preparation and the blood, sweat and tears that these dancers went through to show you something really beautiful,” Gailliard said.

The Spring Festival will feature performances over three nights May 24-26 at the Blue Shield Theater at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Spectacular New Additions to the Illuminate SF Festival of Light
The Wind-Baffles: The iconic wind baffle structures that anchor The Parks at 5 Ma new, vibrant community connected to the surrounding fabric of San Francisco’s SOMA District by a cohesive network of public spaces, are the brainchild of Jerry van Eyck, founder of !melk, an award-winning urban design and landscape architecture firm. Built to mitigate wind, the baffles or “wind breakers” are artfully illuminated from the outside and complemented with a soft glow that radiates through the perforations in the upper zones. Though made from steel, a material associated with heaviness and industry, the baffles are often referred to as “flowers” for their stem and leaf-like design elements. Come nightfall they transform into breathtaking sculptures and suddenly seem to float.

Helical Trace: A permanent installation inside the new LUMA Hotel in Mission Bay, Helical Trace is local artist Jim Campbell’s latest contribution to San Francisco’s Light Art Trail. The dynamic light installation can be seen from the street through the lobby’s floor-to-ceiling three-story windows. The prolific artist who installed Day for Night atop the Salesforce Tower created this striking installation that looks different from every angle and uses the reflection of the windows to amplify its movement. At a distance, the helix form gives the illusion of water across light. The figures within climb an infinite stretch of waterfall, allowing Campbell to create delight out of physical struggle.

Franchise Freedom: Immersive Arts Alliance will bring the acclaimed aerial light performance Franchise Freedom to san francisco for five nights beginning Jan 12.
Lucy in the Sky: One of two new light art installations joining the City’s extensive Civic Arts Collection, Erwin Redls Lucy in the Sky is a landmark artwork in the city’s new Central Subway (first opening for weekend service on Nov 19). Located in the Union Square/Market Street Station, the immersive installation is comprised of over 500 translucent 10 x 10-inch light panels, each containing an array of color LEDs. The panels are suspended along the entire length of the concourse level’s ceiling, spanning nearly 670 feet. Installed in a diamond-shaped pattern, the light panels are computer programmed to slowly change color and display simple patterns, creating a kaleidoscopic experience.

Untitled: Along the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit (VN-BRT) Geary Street Station’s north and southbound boarding platforms, Jorge Pardos lighting sculpture brings a pop of whimsical light and color. Similarly, Agha’s Teardrop (after Robert Irvin) interweaves delicate, traditional Islamic decorative geometric patterns and architecture with modern materials.
San Francisco music festivals don’t get much more beloved than Stern Grove.

Now in its 85th year, the free summer concert series has been a staple in the Bay Area, but its status was put in jeopardy last year after a flood severely damaged the park grounds. Thankfully, renovations are nearing completion, and the reopening party is going to be one to remember.

The June 12 kickoff features two historic Bay Area acts — rap legend Too $hort and prolific horn section Tower of Power — both of whom were originally scheduled to perform for the 2021 season finale. The rest of the lineup was announced in unconventional (and accidental) fashion with an advertisement on Muni.

Traditionally, the Stern Grove concerts were first come, first served. As a result, attendees would arrive in the early morning hours to secure a parcel of grass for picnic blankets and coolers. That changed with the pandemic, which led the organizers to launch an online reservation system. Tickets are still free, and go on sale 12 days before each show, with additional tickets released throughout the week prior to the event.

Ticket reservations will open for the June 12 event at 2 pm at Stern Grove’s website.
