Over the weekend a concerned reader spotted a not-super-conspicuous For Rent sign on the fence below the iconic Bell Plumbing van on a stick at 26th and Vermont streets in Potrero Hill. The space, vacated by Bell, has been empty for some time. Which got us wondering, what are the plans for the site, and, mainly (let’s be honest) for the van on the stick, which has been suspended midair and served as an unofficial marker on Highway 101 for as long as we can remember? Also: What is being rented exactly? And would it be possible to live in the van? Is there Wi-Fi?

We called the number on the sign and reached Oliver Dinglafan, manager at Economy Plumbing, which bought the Bell site sometime around last year. He says that Economy is only renting out the warehouse and the garage on the site, and not the main Bell commercial space. “We still want to keep the advertising and the van,” he adds. That’s because Economy now owns the phone number on the van as well, which gives them a one-of-a-kind advantage on the skyline, if not exactly the right name recognition. Dinglafan is unsure of the company’s plans for the main space, but if you need a warehouse or a garage that you never, ever want to have to give people directions to, well, time to go see a man about a van.

The colossal, 10-panel “Pan American Unity” fresco was painted by Rivera in 1940 and featured in the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island that year. The mural was then moved to CCSF and eventually housed in the school’s Diego Rivera Theatre in 1961.

In 2021, the 30-ton, 22-foot-high, 74-foot-long mural was transferred to a free gallery in SFMOMA, as part of an agreement between the museum and CCSF. The agreement stipulated that SFMOMA would pay a maximum of $3.975 million for the mural’s fees including relocation, and that CCSF would cover additional expenses, according to the lawsuit, which accuses CCSF of not paying its share.

SFMOMA has already paid $4 million while CCSF has put no money toward the project to date, a museum spokesperson confirmed to SFGATE. Safely moving the gigantic mural required the help of “mechanical engineers, architects, art historians, fresco experts, conservators, art handlers” and more.

Article continues below this ad

“This significant investment reflects SFMOMA’s commitment to both honoring Rivera’s legacy in San Francisco and presenting iconic works of art in its free spaces,” the museum said in a statement about the suit.

The museum is seeking damages from the lawsuit in order to cover the costs of returning the mural back to the CCSF campus, which is supposed to happen by early 2024.

“SFMOMA does not take this action lightly,” it said in its statement. “The museum has made repeated efforts to negotiate a resolution before turning to litigation, including mediation. However, because these efforts have not led to mutual resolution and the dispute is now impeding time-sensitive arrangements for the mural’s return to CCSF’s campus in early 2024, SFMOMA sees no other recourse than to now move forward with its complaint.”

CCSF did not respond to SFGATE’s request for comment by publication time.

“SFMOMA is deeply disappointed by CCSF’s refusal to comply with the agreement that helped secure an otherwise collaborative partnership, resulting in more than 598,000 people experiencing and enjoying this magnificent work for free,” the museum’s press release states.

For wine lovers, opening a special bottle can be like a tour of the wine region itself. The nuances of soil, climate and even the personality of the winemaker can be revealed in each glass. The release of this year’s limited Stags Leap District Appellation Collection offers a journey through one of the world’s most renowned Cabernet Sauvignon destinations with 17 different Stags Leap District wines, all from the exceptional 2017 vintage.

This year, Appellation Collection loyalists and buyers also have the opportunity to meet the winemakers and winemakers through a series of interactive virtual tastings so Cabernet Sauvignon enthusiasts can learn more about each of the coveted wines.

“Each of these bottlings stand on their own, but as a collective they tell a complete story of the Stags Leap District and show the distinctive traits of the wines of this region – grace and power, lush texture and lively fruit,” said Nancy Bialek, Executive Director of Hirschen Leap District winemakers. “Our virtual tastings deepen the experience and offer the opportunity to hear directly from our winemakers about this unforgettable vintage.”

The 2017 growing season was beautiful, starting with welcome rains that ended a year-long drought and grapevines drank deep in preparation for summer to come. The summer was mild until August, and then – as if fully aware of the holiday celebrating the hard work that makes America tick – the harvest quickly began after a Labor Day heat surge. A cooling phase shortly before the harvest led to a nice tannin development and wines that are rich, round and very well structured – classic characteristics of the Cabernet Sauvignons in the region. Most of the fruits in the appellation were picked before the forest fires broke out that year, so the wines were safe.

Only 150 sets of the wines are available. Each collection contains 17 bottles of 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, beautifully packaged and ready to ship for the holidays. Featured wineries include Baldacci Family Vineyards, Chimney Rock Winery, Cliff Lede Vineyards, Clos du Val Wineries, Ilsley Vineyards, Lindstrom Wines, Malk Family Wineries, Odette Estate Winery, Pine Ridge Wineries , Quixote Winery, Regusci Winery, Shafer Wineries, and Silverado Leap Wine Cellars, Stags’ Leap Winery, Steltzner Vineyards, and Taylor Family Vineyards.

“This is a treasured gift for any Cabernet lover and an incredible addition to a wine cellar,” continued Bialek. “It’s a way of traveling bottle by bottle through the district and exploring the terroir that makes the region so recognizable.”

The Stags Leap District is a historic Napa Valley appellation with records of viticulture dating back to the 19th century. The district bordered the Vaca Mountains to the east and the Napa River to the west and was the first AVA (American Viticultural Area) in the United States to be approved due to the specific nature of its soils. The wines have an international reputation for quality and are critically praised for their particularity.

The 2017 Appellation Collection is exclusively available from October 15 to December 15, 2020 and costs $ 1,999 for the 17-bottle set, which comes in two boxes with detailed tasting notes for winemakers. Ground shipping is included. To purchase or register for the virtual tasting series, visit www.stagleapdistrict.com/AppellationCollection.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – On the last afternoon of 2020, people gathered on Thursday afternoon to pay their respects to yet another victim of COVID when the landmark Cliff House, San Francisco’s beloved restaurant, was scrapped.

Earlier this month, the announcement of the final closure on December 31st was posted on the restaurant’s website by longtime owners of the Cliff House, Dan and Mary Hountalas. They said 180 employees would lose their jobs.

CONTINUE READING: Man injured while facing thieves breaking into his car in San Francisco’s Sunset District

The Cliff House, which opened 157 years ago, was a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic and delays the National Park Service in securing a long-term operating contract with the restaurant, according to the owners.

Overlooking Ocean Beach and its sweeping views, the Cliff House has a rich history. Once a bar and brothel in the late 19th century, it survived the 1906 earthquake and fire but burned down a year later. In 1973 Dan and Mary Hountalas took over the restaurant on a long-term lease from the National Park Service.

The Cliff House stopped eating in March due to the pandemic. Operators said they tried to work take away only in early June, but after 10 weeks the owners decided to close completely in mid-July. They said the restaurant lost too much money than just take away.

The last long-term contract between Cliff House and the National Park Service expired in June 2018, and the restaurant has since been operating under a series of short-term contracts, the current one ending on Thursday.

Mary Hountalas said last minute negotiations to renew the lease had failed.

“We got a call at 11 o’clock. “No, it’s a six-month extension and a three-year extension,” said one angry Hountalas. “It’s so tangled!”

She said the restaurant had lost employees, lost a lot of money and now lost the lease. They pack up all of their private property inside and outside the restaurant, including the iconic roof sign.

Diner diners have been visiting the restaurant since the announcement to pay their respects, but the removal of the Cliff House sign on the last day of a painful year apparently offered some closure to the dozen who came to say goodbye.

Several dozen people gathered along Point Lobos Avenue in front of the restaurant around noon on Thursday when workers dismantled the distinctive metal sign from the restaurant’s roof.

CONTINUE READING: 79-year-old pedestrian killed in San Francisco Outer Mission Pedestrian accident identified; Pick-up wanted just in case

The crowd gathered below with their phones raised, capturing the historic final moments when drills loosened the corroded bolts.

Several people yelled, “We love you, Cliff House!” or shouted “Thank you!” when the workers removed the screws that held the last letter of the sign in place. The crowd booed in unison as the large metal “E” was removed.

The Cliff House is not alone. Restaurants across San Francisco and the Bay Area are collapsed and will never reopen due to the mandatory COVID shutdown.

Chef Kevin Weber tried to keep his composure and said the staff were family.

“One of my dishwashers, Rafael, came by yesterday because it had been waiting nine months. He didn’t think it would happen, ”said Weber. “So he finally had to clear his locker. He worked for me for 27 years. “

Employees said goodbye all day.

“I worked until I was eight months pregnant,” said one waitress. Her son Lionel, who was now three years old, held on to her when he said goodbye.

Another receptionist held back tears.

“It’s … heartbreaking. Such a loss for all of us, ”she said with a big sigh.

Owners said their debts could force them to auction the restaurant’s historic items, including the iconic sign.

The 1883 Italian San Francisco Victorian, famous for appearing in the opening credits of the ’90s sitcom “Full House” and the reboot of Netflix “Fuller House”, was finally sold after more than a year on the market.

The 1709 Broderick Street home was first listed for $ 5.99 million in May 2019, only to be reduced to $ 5.75 million in September 2019 and then again to $ 5.5 million in February 2020. It sold for $ 5.35 million this month.

The house was bought for $ 4 million in 2016 from Jeff Franklin, the inventor of Full House. Franklin bought the house with the intention of renovating the interior so that it looked more like the sitcom set. However, his permits were revoked after neighbors complained that the renovated home would be even more of a draw for “full house” fans.

There are five bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms spread across the 2,484 square feet of the home. The interior has 11-foot ceilings and original moldings, though it has nothing to do with the house where a widowed father (Bob Saget), three adorable daughters, best friend (Dave Coulier) and brother-in-law (John Stamos) live ) live. The show was shot in a Burbank studio, as was the reboot, and fans are often confused as the show’s opening credits make the house look like it’s one of the Painted Ladies in Alamo Square.

The house has recently undergone a major renovation and now features a Richard Landry design with bespoke kitchen cabinets, marble countertops and brass fittings.

The buyer can still keep a little show nostalgia, as there is a small, secret garden on the spacious terrace and in the English garden, in which the handprints and signatures of the show are cast in cement.
