AURORA, Colo. — Six people were injured — two critically — in Colorado on Saturday when a heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit collapsed and fell into a pool, authorities said.

>> Read more trending news

Two of the victims were critically hurt when the metal ductwork and mechanical parts fell inside the pool area at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center near Denver International Airport, The Associated Press reported.

According to a news release from Aurora city officials, the HVAC unit collapsed at about 9:50 a.m. MDT. There were about 50 to 100 people in the pool area, according to the television station. Four people who suffered injuries not considered to be life-threatening were taken to area hospitals, the release stated.

Alec Oughton, Aurora Fire Rescue’s chief, told KUSA-TV that eight firefighters were at the resort for physical training on stairwells and responded immediately to the scene.

“We don’t have any information on what led up to the collapse. There will be an investigation,” Oughton told the television station. “That’ll be all the Gaylord’s responsibility. It’s not a fire department investigation. But I know they have an interest in looking into what happened and getting to the bottom of it.”

Jenn Spykerman was at the resort and tweeted photos of the incident.

“The HVAC system came crashing down on guest(s) in the pool area this morning,” Spykerman tweeted. “My son narrowly missed being hit by the disaster.

“Not a good day at the Gaylord in Denver.”

Jamie Olson, who took a video of the collapse, told KDVR-TV that her son had just gotten out of the hot tub when the system collapsed directly on top of it and the rest of the pool.

“We were right on the outside of the hot tub, and just kind of heard a big groan, and we looked up and it was just like a domino effect,” Olson said. “One side collapsed, and then it caused the other side to collapse.”

Gaylord Rockies, which is owned by Marriott International, released a statement and said the company was “devastated by this traumatic incident,” KDVR reported.

World got you down? A hit of “dopamine decor” might lift the spirits. The biggest trend in home decorating this…

World got you down? A hit of “dopamine decor” might lift the spirits.

The biggest trend in home decorating this fall is an emphasis on happiness, self-expression, color and creativity. Does orange make you smile? Dress your kitchen in the happy hue. Love a variety of styles? Do a mashup.

The look goes by many names. Fashion writer Dawnn Karen referenced the feel-good brain chemical in her book “Dress Your Best Life,” holding that “dopamine dressing” — wearing clothes in your own, individual style — gives you positive feelings.

Decorators and influencers say the same thing happens when we throw out old decor rules and step into a space adorned with personal touches. We’re more relaxed. More creative.

People are asking themselves what colors and patterns they really love, “and then bringing those features into their spaces — even if it goes against conventional decorating advice or what they might have seen online 10 years ago,” says Lauren Phillips, associate director of special projects at Better Homes & Gardens.

‘BARKITECTURE’ AND OTHER WAYS TO USE A ROOM

The trend toward making rooms more comfortable, functional and personal gained steam during the pandemic, when many people were homebound. And it continues to grow, Phillips says.

“Unused guest rooms are home offices. Formal dining rooms become craft spaces. And ‘barkitecture’ is having a moment — installing dog baths and other pet-specific features,” she says.

Decor is awash in aesthetic “cores” — Barbiecore, cottagecore, coastal grandma, mermaidcore.

“But I don’t take it to mean we’re bouncing from trend to trend super quickly. To me, it means people are defining their own style, and really getting to the root of the designs they love, even if that’s a little more colorful, kitschy or funky,” says Phillips.

SOCIAL MEDIA HAS LOOSENED THE CREATIVE REINS

There’s lots of inspiration on the internet. “If, 15 years ago, we all wanted the picture-perfect kitchen we saw online, today it’s all about taking a trend or beautiful interior that you see on TikTok or Instagram and pulling out the details you love,” says Phillips.

“Gen Z is on the cusp of becoming our new homeowner,” says Amanda Kruse of Upspring PR, a New York-based marketing firm for real estate, design and interiors.

And they’re more likely to mix styles for a personal spin, she says.

ARTSY ELEMENTS

Emilie Munroe began designing a San Francisco family’s Victorian home by leafing through a sheaf of torn-out magazine images from the client.

“We knew immediately our design should exude happiness and inspire curiosity,” says Munroe.

A tiny powder room got an exuberant pink-and-black, animal-print wallpaper. In a tight hallway next to a window, there’s a kaleidoscopic wallpaper, an abstract rug and a Basquiat-patterned chair.

London-based design editor Cara Gibbs, meanwhile, has noticed the free-wheeling use of paint.

“I feel like it used to be wacky to paint a room pink from top to bottom, but now the application of these bright, poppy palettes is chic, interesting and most importantly very livable. I’m here for it!” she says.

So is Massachusetts designer Nicole Hirsch. She’s put a zingy green — she calls it “alligator” — on a bathroom ceiling. Tangerine on a playroom ceiling. Cobalt blue, lipstick pink and chrome yellow add lively punches on furnishings.

HIDEAWAYS

In her own California home, designer Alison Pickart has the kind of roomy closet that storage-challenged homeowners would envy. But she saw value in a different use.

“It was a hall closet, but with its generous size and great natural light from a back window, I just felt like the space could be ‘more,’” she says.

So she turned it into a little “phone room” for herself. “It seemed like the perfect size and place to escape, with some privacy to make a call.”

Clara Jung of Banner Day Interiors worked with clients on a San Francisco ranch house that’s full of big, airy spaces. But nudge the secret panel in the living room bookcase and you’ll find a cozy, color-saturated, album-lined music den. There’s a vintage wood bar and a sprawl-worthy crimson rug.

“The homeowners are avid LP collectors,” she says, “and the husband’s a musician.”

Jung was ready to install a door when the clients suggested creating the secret entrance instead. “We loved the idea!” she says. “It’s the perfect escape for an audiophile.”

Maybe that’s the new decorating rule: Create your own “perfect escape.”

San Francisco and the entire Bay Area lost populations in the second year of the pandemic, and California’s population continued to decline for the third straight year, according to state estimates released Thursday.

San Francisco saw a decline of about 4,400 people, or 0.5% of its population, between July 2021 and July 2022, a smaller decline than the 3.7% loss in population the previous year.

The city’s population was an estimated 834,046 people as of July 2022, compared with a pre-pandemic peak of 889,783 people in January 2020. This was the lowest level since July 2012, when emigration accelerated seven years of sustained growth fueled by a technology nullified Boom.

The lack of people has been particularly evident in downtown San Francisco over the past three years, with empty offices and BART and Muni trains, and closed restaurants and shops. The fiscal impact is devastating, with the city projecting a $728 million deficit over the next two years. In some ways, downtown San Francisco has had the weakest recovery from the pandemic in all of North America.

California’s population fell 0.54% to 39 million people, a loss of over 210,000 people. A sharp drop in migration to California and around 100,000 combined deaths from the coronavirus pandemic led to a statewide population decline for the first time in a century as of 2020.

The nine-county Bay Area saw some of the sharpest population declines in the state — from Napa’s loss of about 1,800 people to Santa Clara’s loss of over 16,500 people, second only to Los Angeles County’s 113,000 population slump.

San Francisco and the Bay Area’s losses were caused by net internal migration as many residents left the region and state to seek cheaper housing.

San Francisco lost about 8,700 people to internal migration; San Mateo lost 12,700 people; Contra Costa County lost 16,400 people; and Alameda lost 27,300. Santa Clara County, the Bay Area’s most populous county, lost 30,900 people to net internal migration, again the second-highest in the state behind only Los Angeles County. Santa Clara County’s losses were slightly larger compared to Orange County, a region with 1.2 million more residents.

That trend reflected many companies allowing employees to stay away, as well as affordability concerns, said Walter Schwarm, chief demographer at the California Department of Treasury, who published the report.

Schwarm expects California’s population growth to turn positive over the next few years as immigration picks up and the wave of emigration slows from the peaks of the pandemic, but he doubts it will return to the more than 1% growth rates that were seen have been recorded in the last century.

“The big growth era for California is probably over,” Schwarm said.

Widespread tech layoffs, affecting hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, could dampen population growth, although the number of layoffs in California remains unclear.

“A key engine of California’s economy is not hiring as aggressively anymore,” Schwarm said. That could lead to weaker immigration as fewer people come to the state for new jobs.

Birth rates in both California and the US have also declined as many young adults delay marriage and children to pursue higher education, he said. The cost of housing, education, and childcare, which are acutely expensive in the Bay Area, is also a major hurdle.

A decade ago, over half a million children were born in California each year. For the July 2021-2022 period, the number of births was only 423,768.

In addition to COVID deaths, the state’s baby-boomer-heavy population is also aging, resulting in a higher death rate, Schwarm said.

On a percentage basis, San Francisco had the smallest population decline among Bay Area counties, while Marin had the largest at 1.5%.

Yolo County saw the highest percentage and absolute population growth in the state at 3.2%, or nearly 6,900 people, which Schwarm attributed to UC Davis students returning to live on campus. Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo counties also saw population increases attributed to student return, he said.

Lassen County saw the largest percentage drop in the state at 4.8%, or nearly 1,500 people, due to the closure of the Susanville state penitentiary. Plumas County saw a 2.4% population decline and Tuolumne County a 1.9% decline due to wildfires, Schwarm said.

Federal census data, which uses different methodology compared to the state, said San Francisco’s population declined even more sharply at 6.3% between July 2020 and 2021, the sharpest of any US city. The data for the following year will be published in a few months.

Schwarm said the disparity is due to state data collection, which includes students and other returnees, while federal data has a lag.

He said it was highly unlikely that California or the Bay Area would see sustained massive emigration now that the pandemic is under control and many people have settled into new homes following remote work changes.

“These trends were largely a one-off bullet of the pandemic,” Schwarm said. “Barring a massive tech meltdown, we should be getting back into positive territory.”

A weak cold front moving across Northern California delivered mostly drizzle across the drought-stricken region Monday night into Tuesday morning but some isolated locations, especially to the far north, saw significant rain.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, one location along the Sonoma Coast had recorded a half-inch by 5 pm Monday with other locations around the North Bay reporting a hundredth to a couple tenths of an inch, the National Weather Service reported. The amounts were small, but amid a drought, any rain was welcomed.

“Rain right now in #SanFrancisco,” wrote a Twitter user. “I’ve never been so happy in my life to walk in the #rain”

Sidewalks and roadways across San Francisco were wet during the Monday evening commute.

“Aggressive drizzle in San Francisco,” wrote ABC 7 meteorologist Drew Tuma on Twitter.

Here’s a look at some rainfall totals for the SF Bay Area:

Bodega Bay 0.21 inch
Mill Valley 0.18 inch
Inverness 0.13 inches
Mount Diablo 0.13 inch
Calistoga 0.10 inch
Guerneville 0.10 inch
Glen Ellen 0.07 inch
Pacifica 0.07 inches
San Francisco 0.04 inches

Quick Response Firearms is one of the newest gun shops in Twin Falls. It is locally owned and operated. You have some really amazing things in there. The store is moving, but they won’t move far.

Right now they are behind Albertsons next to the liquor store on Blue Lakes Blvd. The shop is pretty small but full of really great stuff. If you’ve been around this complex recently, you may have noticed a sign with the Quick Response Firearms logo on the front of the complex. You will be moving to the front of the building. In fact, they are in the process of moving some things as we speak.

I’m not sure when the new store front will open for trading. I think their new location, while not far from the previous one, will work wonders for their business. If you didn’t realize Quick Response Firearms was back there, you could easily drive by or never know it existed. Now their new storefront will face Addison Avenue with a large sign that is welcoming and eye-catching.

The business actually only started online and has only grown since then. If you’ve ever walked in there you know that the people there are some of the nicest, knowledgeable, and interesting people on the planet. They’re great salespeople too. Almost every time I walk in there, I go out with a new toy.

The new store front isn’t open yet, so keep walking to its original location.

A fan of the jam band Phish fell to his death, and two other concertgoers were injured in a separate fall at the Chase Center in San Francisco over the weekend.

Ryan Prosser, 47, of Athens, NY, died Sunday after falling from an upper deck and landing on empty seats below, and authorities say evidence suggests he may have jumped.

Concert goers alerted authorities around 8:55 p.m. during the band’s first set that a person needed medical attention after falling, San Francisco police officers said.

“We felt that blow. It was a remarkable blow, “one concert-goer said to KPIX 5.” One of my friends said, ‘Is it an earthquake?’ And the other said, ‘I think someone fell.’ I saw the body of a man who was shirtless draped over a seat. “

Officials who arrived at the scene worked to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead, said Robert Reuca, the San Francisco Police Department’s public intelligence officer.

Police have found no evidence of foul play in Prosser’s death, and the San Francisco Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office is investigating, authorities said.

“The investigation has evidence that the victim jumped from an elevated area of the arena, causing them to fall a considerable distance, causing their injuries,” Reuca said. “Immediately before the victim jumped, it appeared to have no physical contact with a person.”

Kimberly Veale, a Chase Arena spokeswoman, said in a statement that arena officials are working with local authorities to find out what happened.

“We extend our condolences to the relatives of the guest,” she said.

About an hour after the first fall, at 9.45 p.m., officials were alerted of another incident in which a man fell from another area above and landed on a concert-goer below. Both were taken to hospital and treated for their injuries, the authorities said.

Evan Reeves, 44, of Oakland, was hit when an unidentified man fell on him, KPIX reported.

“It was a loud thump, then a sharp pain in my left leg and a guy’s head in my lap,” Reeves told the point of sale. “I immediately dragged myself a few meters away to get some distance so that he could be treated.”

Reeves said the venue allowed him to stay for the rest of the concert before being rushed to the hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.

He told reporters that he was originally seated in the second row of the upper deck but had moved down “because I didn’t feel safe dancing there”. He said he was concerned about the low plastic barriers in the upper sections.

Concert goers who witnessed the falls used social media to describe what they saw. Twitter user Bobby Moen said in a post that he was sitting in one of the top rows behind Possner when he saw him fall. After moving to another section, Moen later saw the second man fall.

“We’re shaken and going home early,” he tweeted.

Rebecca Studer, an occupational therapist from Oakland, was at the concert but didn’t see the falls. However, she posted an offer of 30-minute phone calls or zoom sessions on social media to help anyone who witnessed the events.

Studer said Tuesday she spoke to about a dozen people.

“Most of what people say revolves around the repetitive experiences of the landing noise, the blood scene of the picture of him over the seat he landed on, paramedics taking care of him, and the impulse to help but with no real skills, ”she said.

Studer, who has been an occupational therapist for five years, said that people who experience shock trauma or horror often have intrusive thoughts or repetitions of the event. “In the short term, it’s really important to find resources and social connections,” she said.

Until Wednesday, the band Phish had not officially commented on any of the falls.

CURRENT August 4th, 12:45 p.m. The partner of the woman, who was hit by a marble slab outside a restaurant in San Francisco, speaks out for her.

Gwen Grohs, the victim’s girlfriend, told SFGATE that the fire department’s claims of a “minor” injury were incorrect.

“Despite what the fire department claims, her injury was quite serious; she almost died and she has traumatic brain injury,” Grohs said in an email.

“She had to have an operation to stop the bleeding from her head,” she added, explaining that a drain was installed to allow the blood to drain from the head wound. Astrid, the victim, is currently in intensive care after suffering a concussion from the impact. (Your full name will not be published for privacy reasons.)

Grohs has also set up a GoFundMe for Astrid to “cover costs such as food for yourself and your dog, utilities and rent”. She says she will take legal action against the builder.

August 3, 2:30 p.m. A woman was reportedly knocked unconscious on Tuesday in San Francisco after a piece of marble siding fell from a building and hit her.

Patrick Burns, a San Francisco resident, told SFGATE that he would be “just around the corner from Hyde to Geary at around 7:30 pm Monday night.”

“The marble cladding,” he said, “fell from a floor above the woman and hit her.”

It knocked her unconscious, he said, but wasn’t sure if the siding hit her in the head or shoulder.

Passers-by at the scene, including a bartender from nearby With a Twist, helped the woman, whose identity is unknown, before first responders arrived at the scene and took her to the hospital.

Patrick Burns

The San Francisco Fire was on site, Burns said, and a spokesman said she had “minor injuries”.

The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, the spokesman added, was later called in to assess the building.

The building with the overturned marble slab is the Anh Hong – Bo 7 Mon Vietnamese restaurant on Lower Nob Hill, but it is unclear whether the owners of the restaurant own the building.

A call from SFGATE to Anh Hong on Wednesday morning was not answered.

Burns posted about the incident on Reddit, where he provided more information about the woman. She has blonde hair and wore a brown sweater and rainbow hat.

The San Francisco police were unaware of the incident when they were contacted by SFGATE.

INDIAN FALLS (CBS SF) – Propelled by tinder-dry, drought-stricken trees and scrub, a wall of flames from the angry Dixie Fire roared through the town of Indian Falls, Plumas County, on Saturday night, leaving a devastating trail of charred vehicles that burned houses and destroyed homes Dreams.

The devastation occurred on the eastern edge of the 190,625 acre conflagration that devastated Plumas County for a week. Thousands have been evicted from their homes in rural wilderness communities across the county.

While the images of Indian Falls were terrifying, there were victories too when the fire department was able to save some buildings from the fire. Buildings also burned in the rural town of Paxton.

The Dixie fire, which began on July 14, burned in a remote area with restricted access and hampered firefighters’ efforts as it moved east, firefighters said.

It has triggered evacuation orders in several small communities and along the west bank of Lake Almanor, a popular retreat. But on Saturday it marched east with such intensity and speed that the firefighters had to retreat to safe havens.

“The threats and risks associated with this fire are very real,” said Mike Minton, Commander of Cal Incident Team 2. “We are observing fire behavior, conditions and fuel conditions that are not common in this area. The rapid increase in fires we are seeing is very real – we saw that today at Greenville ‘Y’. It is very extreme fire behavior, which essentially meant that the fire fighters had to retreat to safe areas and allow this fire front to pass through. “

“It was raining ashes, it was just a dark sky, everyone had this troubled, ominous feeling, you know it was, you could tell there was panic,” he said of his exodus from the fire zone. “I was just hoping there would be a house to go back to.”

During an update of the fire Saturday night, Plumas County Sheriff Todd Johns asked residents to heed the call to evacuate.

“The fire is up on the ridge now (near Taylorsville),” he said, pointing to the rapid eastern growth on the map on Saturday. “You know how steep the mountains are behind you. If you haven’t, I highly recommend evacuating if you live on Arlington Road in Taylorsville. The fire activity at this point was insane. It’s extreme, most of the time it was unpredictable. “

“I ask the people who live and want to stay in Taylorsville to reconsider this and leave the area.”

On Sunday morning the fire was 21% contained, but those numbers seemed to be adjusting hourly as the fire spread aggressively.

5,022 firefighters were involved in the battle and 10,721 buildings were threatened.

The weather forecast for Sunday included the possibility of lightning and heavy brief rains. These gusty conditions will also create extreme wind behavior along the fire front.

“I wish I had better news,” Cal Fire meteorologist Julia Ruthford said Saturday night. “I know this is a pretty bad weather forecast. But that’s what we got. “
