Plans for a new indoor soccer facility in South San Francisco at 152 Utah Ave. received positive Planning Commission feedback to help add a community amenity for young people.

“Anything that helps our young people get more physically active and even our adults get more physically active in the community is only going to be a benefit,” Planning Commissioner Sarah Funes-Ozturk said at a May 18 Planning Commission meeting.

The existing 15,000-square-foot building will have a 38-by-92-foot soccer field with a synthetic turf surface for soccer players of all ages and levels for games and practices. The indoor facility will be in a one-story warehouse building on the south side of Utah Avenue, east of Corey Way. The 41,665-square-foot project site is bordered by Utah Avenue to the north, industrial, warehouse and commercial uses to the south and west and Colma Creek to the east. The site used to be an Old Master Products hardwood flooring business. Nearby businesses include Farmers Insurance, a sewage treatment plant and The Adam Hill Company.

Business hours would be 4-11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the weekends. The number of players allowed at a time in the building would be 24, with a maximum occupancy of 28. There are 37 parking spaces provided based on traffic studies on peak parking demand in other similar soccer facilities in the Bay Area.

The commission approved the use permit for the site because it will help fill a community gap and add another amenity for young people. Planning Commissioner John Baker said indoor sports facilities east of Highway 101 were essential for the community, citing his time as a former coach in the South San Francisco youth baseball leagues.

“I will be voting in favor of this because it is needed and complies with the zoning,” Baker said.

Security guards and portable toilets spotted at PG&E substations around San Francisco could be linked to a recent break-in at a facility, raising safety concerns among consumer advocates amid attacks on power grids across the country.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the break-in occurred at 8:39 p.m. on June 9 at the PG&E substation on Leidesdorff Street near Commercial Street.

“We witnessed an unauthorized break-in at a San Francisco substation and are working with law enforcement to investigate,” PG&E spokesman Jason King confirmed, adding that there were no power outages related to the incident.

According to initial police investigations, an unknown person gained access to the facility and manipulated a control panel in the electrical system. PG&E security personnel notified the FBI after the incident.

Dispatch audio recordings from the time of the incident described it as “sabotage” and classified it as malicious mischief or vandalism.

District Manager Aaron Peskin, who represents the area, didn’t know if guards were stationed at other PG&E substations in San Francisco, but said the incident may have been a reason to add them.

“If there are guards, I’m assuming it’s not because of broken transformers, but because they hacked into one of their substations,” Peskin said.

When asked if the incident resulted in an increased security presence around the utility’s San Francisco substations, King said he couldn’t name specific security measures to “avoid giving anyone a roadmap.”

Security guards and mobile toilets were spotted at three substations in different parts of the city.

Attacks on the power grid in the United States

Recent attacks on nine substations in North Carolina, Washington and Oregon have increased concerns about power grid security.

The New York Times reported in February that the FBI had offered two $25,000 rewards for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for two shootings at a North Carolina substation in December and January. The January incident left 45,000 people without power for five days.

Recent attacks have made network security a key priority for North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).

“The increase in physical attacks on the nation’s power infrastructure underscores the need to continue to assess potential grid vulnerabilities and determine whether additional security controls are needed to more fully protect this critical infrastructure going forward,” said Rachel Sherrard, spokeswoman for NERC. in an opinion.

According to one report, PG&E spent $300 million protecting substations after a San Jose substation was hit by gunfire in 2013, causing $15 million in damage.

The San Jose incident prompted a brief statewide safety assessment, according to Thomas Long, director of regulatory strategy at the Utility Reform Network, a California consumer advocacy group for utilities.

“There was some effort [California] “The Public Utilities Commission needs to look into whether PG&E and other utilities are taking care of the adequate security of these substations, but that was many years ago and I don’t recall there being a public inquiry,” Long said.

It has long been questioned whether regulators will hold PG&E accountable for making proper use of its revenue, which is funded by the high utility fees paid by consumers.

“I don’t know if PG&E is doing enough security efforts given the money taxpayers are paying,” he said. “Our tariffs fund PG&E to provide these security guards at the substations.”

The California Public Utilities Commission did not respond to comment at the time of publication.

In late April, thousands of customers in Downtown and Chinatown were without power for five days after a fire at a PG&E underground vault at 640 Clay St. The San Francisco Fire Department responded in less than four minutes, but it took PG&E 20 minutes to arrive at the scene.

The delay in emergency response time and restoration of power prompted Peskin to convene a May 18 hearing where residents of affected areas criticized the utility.

“There have been numerous failures of vaults and other PG&E equipment over many years,” Peskin said at the hearing. “This particular incident is characterized by the fact that […] power was restored to the last buildings and individuals 123 hours later.”

When you’re the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States — serving 1,298 facilities statewide, including 171 medical centers and 1,113 outpatient facilities — the challenges of keeping facilities’ HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems reliable and efficient are immense . This also applies to the invoice for the maintenance and modernization of facilities.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has proposed a budget of $325 billion for fiscal 2024, including $4.1 billion for construction — the largest request ever for that category, according to the department of the military is struggling to sustain aging hospitals, some more than 100 years old .com.

The funds would be used to modernize 10 healthcare facilities that “lack resilience and sustainability,” according to VA budget documents. The request, however, comes as the department continues an ongoing evaluation of all of its properties, many of which are in equally urgent need of repairs or upgrades. The FY2024 budget request is the largest ever for the department, representing a 5% increase from this year’s approved budget request.

The $4.1 billion planning application includes $3.01 billion for 10 medical facilities and two cemeteries projects, and $1.08 billion for 76 new smaller development projects. The 10 VA plants, which would receive large building grants, are located in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Portland, Oregon; American Lake, Washington; Perry Point, Maryland; El Paso, Texas; West Haven, Connecticut; Dallas; San Francisco; San Diego; and St Louis.

At least one of the facilities, West Haven, has known dangers for years: In the months leading up to a 2020 steam line explosion that killed two workers, employees had complained of unsafe or unsanitary conditions, such as burst pipes and insect infestations.

Biotech giant Genentech said it plans to close its South San Francisco manufacturing facility, laying off 265 workers there, the company confirmed.

The drugmaker said the move was part of a long-term plan and was unrelated to the current economic downturn.

The announcement comes after the South San Francisco City Council approved the company’s 2020 plans to expand its headquarters there by up to 4.3 million square feet over the next 15 years, a long-term plan that is one of the largest in the Bay Area Area was real estate projects.

The company has previously cut 474 Bay Area-related jobs, including at its South San Francisco location in 2020.

The company said in an emailed statement it had planned for more than a decade to end production at the facility, where it has been making drugs and cancer therapies since the early 1980s.

“More than 15 years ago, we made the strategic decision to withdraw from commercial manufacturing in South San Francisco,” the statement said. “This decision was part of a thoughtful, long-term plan to focus clinical supplies manufacturing in South San Francisco, where it is co-located with our R&D organization, while commercial manufacturing moves to other locations in our global manufacturing network.”

Genentech plans to close its South San Francisco manufacturing facility and lay off about 265 employees.

The company said employees leaving the company would receive severance and other financial benefits, extended health insurance and career transition services, adding: “Those wishing to remain with Genentech are eligible and encouraged to apply for other positions at our US locations, including our new commercial manufacturing facility in Oceanside, California.”

Genentech also has manufacturing facilities in Vacaville and in Hillsboro, Ore.

In 2019, the company employed about 900 people at the facility when it finalized its initial exit schedule, “most of whom have moved to other roles within the company, such as our new clinical care center in South San Francisco,” which opened last fall was opened, the company announced.

Genentech employs a total of more than 13,000 people as of 2021, with its South San Francisco headquarters including 40 buildings for research, manufacturing and other operations.

2023 was something of a transition for Plenty, the indoor grow company.

On the one hand, they recently received a $25 million grant to build a new R&D facility in Laramie, Wyoming, where they already have a facility. On the other hand, Plenty announced that it has closed its R&D facility in San Francisco, previously its main research center.

Below, Plenty Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer Nate Storey discusses the new R&D facility, why Wyoming is a great choice, and more.

Producer: Why is the right moment for this new R&D facility?

Nate Storey: Plenty is working to solve two critical problems for vertical farming: scale and diversity. In order to somewhat ease the burden on outdoor growers and increase the stability of our food supply chain, indoor growers need to contribute a much larger volume of produce. Expanding our crop science research work with this new center will double our research area and expand our ability to grow the widest variety of crops.

According to Storey, the new farm in Wyoming is scheduled to open in 2025.

PG: Is there an estimated time of arrival as to when this will be open? And aside from the scholarship, why Wyoming? What makes Wyoming a good choice for this facility?

NS: We plan to start construction later this year and open the facility in early 2025. Plenty’s team and research will be transferred to the new facility from their current location in Laramie upon completion.

Plenty has longstanding roots in Wyoming and we have anchored our plant science work there at our research center since 2016. We are proud to support the state to play a leading role in the advancement of the new field of indoor farming and the growth of a state-of-the-art R&D cluster.
