There are many reasons why people choose to move to Singapore.

It could be new opportunities, the year-round summer weather, and sometimes family. For one US woman, safety was the primary motivation behind her move from San Francisco to Singapore.

In a 160-second TikTok video, content creator Heather Chan shared why she left the City by the Bay.

Originally from Cupertino, a city in California, she relocated to San Francisco in 2013 to pursue her studies in architecture.

@unicornheatt Why I left San Francisco…and moved to Singapore Still love san francisco and left my heart there but i think san francisco in 2023 is just too dangerous and not worth the risk. #leavingsanfrancisco #sgexpat #movedabroad #sanfranciscocrime #leavingcalifornia ♬ original sound – unicornheatt

“The dream was always to go to San Francisco cause it’s the best city in the world,” she said before caveating with “Or so I thought”.

The 28-year-old highlighted that San Francisco has been on the decline ever since Proposition 47 was passed in 2014.

The new law states that all property crimes, including robbery, will be reclassified as a misdemeanour if the value of stolen property is less than US$950 (S$1305.95).

This has encouraged theft, since people won’t be facing felony charges.

“There’s this general feeling of lawlessness”, recounted Heather on living in San Francisco.

To illustrate her point, she mentioned how she experienced three smash-and-grab car burglaries in her first year of owning a car in 2021.

For comparison, Heather, who has been living here for the past six months, tells AsiaOne that safety is a given in Singapore.

“You don’t have to think about your belongings. Everything is always safe and secure,” she adds.

Even in broad daylight, she was assaulted on her way back from a dental appointment in San Francisco. “There were people around me [but] no one said anything,” she added.

Whereas in Singapore, Heather tells us, you don’t really have to worry about getting robbed.

“You can wear AirPods and go for runs anytime in the day, even in the middle of the night, and nothing is really gonna happen to you,” Heather explains.

And a week before leaving for Singapore, she saw someone running three metres away from her with a gun when she was walking her dog. This happened in Rincon Hill, which is known to be one of the safest neighbourhoods in the US city.

“In that moment, I saw my life flash before my eyes,” she mentioned.

To illustrate her point, Heather shares that in Singapore, she and her husband go on walks while playing Pokemon Go and only have to watch out for cars and motorised scooters.

Whereas in San Francisco, it’s a complete 180 difference since her husband had to walk behind her to keep a look out for suspicious characters when she is walking her dog.

She also highlighted that women in San Francisco are encouraged to carry tasers or pepper spray for protection. But for Heather, that seems pointless as she tends to freeze up in stressful situations.

As she highlighted all these personal anecdotes, she mentioned that she is grateful to be in Singapore.

Netizens concur

In the comments section, netizens shared similar sentiments about San Francisco with Heather as well.

On the flip side, some people have mentioned the downside to living in Singapore.

One comment mentioned how the Lion City can be “stifling” at times, pushing people to leave after a few years.

While another user mentioned that the cost of living here is too high, putting a strain on things like home ownership and retirement.

I vividly remember that late Friday afternoon when my eye pressure spiked and I staggered on foot to my ophthalmologist’s office as the rapidly thickening fog in my field of vision shrouded passing cars and traffic lights.

The office was already closed, but the whole eye care team was there waiting for me. One of them pricked my eyeballs with a sharp instrument, allowing the ocular fluid that had built up to drain. That relieved the pressure and restored my vision.

But it was the fourth vision-impairing pressure spike in nine days, and they feared it would happen again — heading into a weekend. So off I went to the emergency room, where I spent the night hooked up to an intravenous tube that delivered a powerful anti-swelling agent.

Later, when I told this story to friends and colleagues, some of them didn’t understand the importance of eye pressure, or even what it was. “I didn’t know they could measure blood pressure in your eyes,” one of them told me.

Most people consider their vision to be vitally important, yet many lack an understanding of some of the most serious eye diseases. A 2016 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology, based on an online national poll, showed that nearly half of respondents feared losing their eyesight more than their memory, speech, hearing, or limbs. Yet many “were unaware of important eye diseases,” it found.

A study released this month, conducted by Wakefield Research for the nonprofit Prevent Blindness and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, showed that one-quarter of adults deemed at risk for diseases of the retina, such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, had delayed seeking care for vision problems.

“There is significantly less of an emphasis placed on eye health than there is on general health,” says Rohit Varma, founding director of the Southern California Eye Institute at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center.

Because eye diseases can be painless and progress slowly, Varma says, “people get used to it, and as they age, they begin to feel, ‘Oh, this is a normal part of aging and it’s OK.’” If people felt severe pain, he says, they would go get care.

For many people, though, it’s not easy to get an eye exam or eye treatment. Millions are uninsured, others can’t afford their share of the cost, and many live in communities where eye doctors are scarce.

“Just because people know they need the care doesn’t necessarily mean they can afford it or that they have the access to it,” says Jeff Todd, CEO and president of Prevent Blindness.

Another challenge, reflecting the divide between eye care and general health care, is that medical insurance, except for children, often covers only eye care aimed at diagnosing or treating diseases. More health plans are covering routine eye exams these days, but that generally does not include the type of test used to determine eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions — or the cost of the lenses. You may need separate vision insurance for that. Ask your health plan what’s covered.

Since being diagnosed with glaucoma 15 years ago, I’ve had more pressure checks, eye exams, eyedrops, and laser surgeries than I can remember. I should know not to take my eyesight for granted. And yet, when my peepers were filling with that vision-threatening fog last March, I felt oddly sanguine.

It turned out that those serial pressure spikes were triggered by an adverse reaction to steroid-based eyedrops prescribed to me following cataract surgery. My ophthalmologist told me later that I had come “within hours” of losing my eyesight.

I hope my brush with blindness can help inspire people to be more conscious of their eyes.

Eyeglasses or contact lenses can make a huge difference in one’s quality of life by correcting refractive errors, which affect 150 million Americans. But don’t ignore the risk of far more serious eye conditions that can sneak up on you. They are often manageable if caught early enough.

Glaucoma, which affects about 3 million people in the U.S., attacks peripheral vision first and can cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve. It runs in families and is five times as prevalent among African Americans as in the general population.

Nearly 10 million in this country have diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes in which blood vessels in the retina are damaged. And some 20 million people age 40 and up have macular degeneration, a disease of the retina associated with aging that diminishes central vision over time.

The formation of cataracts, which cause cloudiness in the eye’s natural lens, is very common as people age: Half of people 75 and older have them. Cataracts can cause blindness, but they are eminently treatable with surgery.

If you are over 40 and haven’t had a comprehensive eye exam in a while, or ever, put that on your to-do list. And get an exam at a younger age if you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or if you are African American or part of another racial or ethnic group at high risk for certain eye diseases.

And don’t forget children. Multiple eye conditions can affect kids. Refractive errors, treatable with corrective lenses, can cause impairment later in life if they are not addressed early enough.

Healthful lifestyle choices also benefit your eyes. “Anything that helps your general health helps your vision,” says Andrew Iwach, a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and executive director of the Glaucoma Center of San Francisco.

Minimize stress, get regular exercise, and eat a healthy diet. Also, quit smoking. It increases the risk of major eye diseases.

And consider adopting habits that protect your eyes from injury: Wear sunglasses when you go outside, take regular breaks from your computer screen and cellphone, and wear goggles when working around the house or playing sports.

The Prevent Blindness website offers information on virtually everything related to eye health, including insurance.

Other good sources include the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s “EyeSmart” site and the National Eye Institute.

So read up and share what you’ve learned.

“When you get together for the holidays,” says Iwach, “if you aren’t sure what to talk about, talk about your eyes.”

Outside the tallest tower in San Francisco. Photo: Paul Chinn/The San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images

To lure businesses to ailing downtown San Francisco, officials are calling for a change in corporate taxation.

The big picture: The city has long had high corporate taxes, but companies still flock here for access to talent, venture capital and the “seal of approval of being in San Francisco,” Jeff Bellisario, executive director of the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, told Axios.

But with the rise of remote work amid the pandemic, more companies are “reconsidering their physical footprint” and evaluating their “cost of doing business,” which includes local taxes, Bellisario said.

Why it matters: Some companies, like Meta, are downsizing their San Francisco footprint, while others, like Coinbase, have gone entirely.

Today, over 25% of San Francisco’s office space is vacant.

The city faces a potential deficit of $728 million over the next two fiscal years, due in part to lower-than-expected property tax receipts.

Details: Mayor London Breed’s recently unveiled plan to revitalize downtown San Francisco provides tax incentives of up to $1 million over three years for companies opening new offices here.

For more permanent changes, the mayor also called on the city’s controller and treasurer to develop a possible tax reform measure, for residents to vote on in 2024, that would “allow San Francisco to better compete with its peer cities when it comes to it.” to attract new businesses,” the mayor said in a press release.

Using the numbers: A San Francisco tech company with 250 employees and total revenues of $750 million would pay about $10.4 million in local taxes, according to analysis released this month by the Bay Area Council Economic Institute.

The same hypothetical company would pay just over $4 million in Oakland and $2.7 million in Berkeley.

It would pay around $50,000 annually in South San Francisco and $17,118 in San Jose.

What you say: “Cities that consider themselves business-friendly want these taxes to be as low as possible because they can use that as a selling point when trying to attract businesses from across the country or companies moving out of San Francisco,” said Bellisario.

In the meantime, Supervisor Dean Preston said he was disappointed with Breed’s plan, which he says “prioritizes tax payments to big corporations.”

Instead, Preston wants the city to focus on “neighborly small businesses, much-needed affordable housing, and a functioning public transportation system.”

What’s next: The board of directors must approve any short-term tax breaks proposed by the mayor.

Supervisor Aaron Peskin told the SF Business Times what the 2024 tax measure might look like: “Let’s see where our economy goes.”

Chotto Matte, a high-voltage destination for Nikkei cuisine, is growing. Not just with one new locale or a souped-up renovation — new locations in Doha, Riyadh, San Francisco, and London (the brand’s second location in the city) are in the works, with properties in Washington and Manchester to follow. “We’ve also secured Rome, Beverly Hills and Milan,” describes founder Kurt Zdesar, “and we’re in the final stages of signing Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Nashville.”

Doha will open at the end of next month, with Marylebone, London, to follow in April. Riyadh and San Francisco are set to open by the end of 2022.

It’s an ambitious expansion, particularly in the wake of a global pandemic that shuttered over 100,000 restaurants in the US alone.

“Warren Buffet said it best,” explains Zdesar via Facetime. “When everyone else is buying, selling. When everyone else is selling, buy.” The pandemic left restaurant real estate ripe for the picking, and he in a position to negotiate on pricing.”Not only was I getting AAA sites but I’m getting huge support from landlords. While I likely would have opened five restaurants over these next few years, I’m taking on upwards of 10.”

Global expansion isn’t a green concept to the Australian-born, British-based food magnate. Zdesar started his career at KFC franchise Southern Fast Foods (as a manager by 18, no less), moving upwards to open Nobu’s first London restaurant before launching Ping Pong, his brand of dim sum restaurants. Add in a consulting gig or two (at London’s Hakkasan and Paris’ Les Bains) and he’s well versed in bottling lightning.

He sold his shares in Ping Pong and opened Chotto Matte on London’s Frith Street in 2013, offering Nikkei cuisine as a buzzing, bicultural dining experience with blown-out theatrics and art-covered spaces. Miami followed in 2018 — an impressive space with a retractable roof and a 33,000-pound volcanic boulder — and a two-level space in downtown Toronto in 2019.

Doha will open at the end of next month, with Marylebone, London, to follow in April. Riyadh and San … [+] Francisco are set to open by the end of 2022.

 Chotto mat

What is Nikkei cuisine? A hyper-specific facet of Peruvian cuisine born from the Japanese migrants who arrived in Peru in the late 1800s to work on coastal sugar plantations. Japan’s government wanted to relocate young farmers by moving them to countries experiencing agricultural booms. Tens of thousands made the journey.

Like many marginalized immigrant communities, they adapted their culinary traditions to fit their location, making familiar recipes with foreign Peruvian ingredients. Nikkei – the Japanese word for emigrants – now signals the cuisine of this diaspora. (For guests who are confused about these bi-cultural offerings on the menu, servers are quick to explain Nikkei’s roots.)

At Chotto Matte, that means black cod carefully marinated in yuzu, aji and miso and caramelized on a binchotan grill, or broccoli and huacatay (a Peruvian black mint sauce) similarly charred. Vibrant yellowtail ceviches are plush with leche de tigre, toasted Peruvian corn, sweet potatoes and bright slivers of onions. Anticuchos, or small pieces of octopus, chicken, or salmon, are sliced small, skewered and grilled until they’re juicy and packed with flavor. Drinks pairing run the gamut of local wines, sake and fluffy pisco sours.

Rich, smokey binchotan-grilled pulpo served with fluffy purple Peruvian potatoes and yuzu is a … [+] Hallmark of the bi-cultural cuisine of Peru and Japan.

 www.studiolau.com

On any given weeknight a DJ will set up camp by the entrance. Weekends are filled with everything from drag brunches to contemporary dance shows. “We aren’t in the business of entertainment, but we do entertain,” explains Zdesar. Dinner at Chotto Matte is a highly sensory experience — sushi is torched tableside, floor-to-ceiling graffiti glows in low light and performers weave between tables.

Zdesar’s rollout strategy is to “enter markets where something like this doesn’t exist.” Are Nikkei ingredients available in that market? Are there other Nikkei restaurants?

He looks into the locations of top-performing restaurants in the world. What cities are they in? What neighborhoods? “In DC, all the top-performing restaurants surround the White House. So, we can’t be too far from there.”

Zdesar handles much of this research himself. “Not only is this a financial commitment and an investment risk, but the space needs to speak to me and have the right space for our concept.”

San Francisco’s rooftop perch is slick, spacious, and centralized in the city’s core.

 Chotto mat

In Manchester, that means “an 18,000 square foot rooftop space in a growing city. Folks who have opened there in the last few years have done exceptionally well,” says Zdesar. Designs for the San Francisco outpost are particularly swell — Chotto Matte will sit amidst the skyline atop a former Macy’s department store currently undergoing a massive renovation that will transform the building into a retail center and expansive event hub. In Los Angeles, Chotto Matte wants to inhabit a spacious rooftop overlooking Beverly Hills.

Doha (located in the St. Regis Marsa Arabia) and Riyadh (in the King Abdullah Financial District) will fall under a new franchise system put in place by Chotto Matte to facilitate global expansions. Management will be handled locally, with the brand’s UK headquarters overseeing strategy and marketing. Zdesar assures them do limit openings to ensure they launch each new space efficiently and properly. “We can only grow to the capabilities of management.”

Down the road, they plan to open a training school in Miami, where new staff can decamp and train before joining an opening team. “We would get better use of our Miami location and it’s a purpose-driven expansion – our current biggest limitation is building our teams.”

To secure success at each new Chotto Matte, key members of new locations — head chefs, executive chef, sushi restaurant managers — are sent to busy locations for a quality-check retreat of sorts. “If they can run that location, we know they’ll be fine wherever they go,” Zdesar says. “It’s an investment, but we see it as an insurance policy.”

The Toronto Space is neon-hued and nestled between soaring buildings in the city’s finance … [+] district and Union Station, Toronto’s transit hub.

 Chotto mat

No matter the location, each Chotto Matte will have the brand’s signature performative element. “We’re thinking of full theatrical nights, proper installations and allocating areas where performers can work freely.” An Italian company is on board to help boost experiences, curate uniforms and find local artists.

“Anytime we do anything like that the reaction, uptake and uplift in the business is phenomenal,” he continues. “These experiences are garnering us millions of interactions on social media.”

“I think the whole global dining experience is going to shift towards entertaining,” says Zdesar. After years shut inside, does a restaurant exist simply as a place for nourishment, or does it need more reasons to draw in diners? “We’re looking at a new model of what a restaurant is today – it touches all senses.”

WALNUT – Reigning California Community College Athletic Association football champion Riverside City College (10-2) will defend its title against seven-time champion and undefeated City College of San Francisco (12-0).

The showdown begins Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. San Antonio College’s new stadium in Walnut

• Riverside defeated two unbeaten teams en route to the title game: Ventura, 41-21, and then Golden West, 27-23, in the Southern California championship game on Saturday, December 4th. That avenged an earlier 37-20 non-league setback for the Rustlers that had ended the Tigers’ state-leading 16-game winning streak (and included a 13-0 title campaign in 2019). This was the last CCCAA championship season before COVID.

• CCSF finished 2019 state runners-up College of San Mateo’s 4-season Bay 6 Championship, 31-27 (then ranked 1st state and nation) in the regular season finals. The Rams repulsed the Bulldogs 20-17 again at the Northern California Championships after defeating American River 35-17 in the semifinals.

San Francisco finished the regular season 10-0 and ranked #1 in the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll of California Community College football coaches. Riverside was No. 4 at 8-2.

This is effectively the national 2-year college title game as well, with CCSF having the nation’s best record at 12-0. The vast majority of America’s 117 teams play in the CCCAA, 63 in 2021 (plus Cabrillo and College of the Redwoods, who are on hiatus here). The National JC Athletic Association has just 54 football teams, with Iowa Western being the only undefeated – at 9-0.

Both teams are coached by former All-Star CCC quarterbacks who have played for legendary coaches: Riverside’s Tom Craft of the Monterey Peninsula (for the late Chris Pappas) and CCSF’s Jimmy Collins (for George Rush).

Note: Last Saturday’s first Chris Pappas (Memorial) Bowl was won by Contra Costa, 28-19, over Foothill – the end of the American Division season.

Offensive: CCSF is the state’s highest-scoring National Division team with 45.0 points per game; also compiles top yards per game, 458.8. The breakdown is 316.8 passing (#1 overall) and 142.0 rushing.

Riverside is 33.4 ppg, 440.1 yards per game (No. 2). Breakdown: 262.8 passing, 178.3 rushing.

Defense: The Rams defense is No. 2 in the state overall at 11.7 ppg (behind San Mateo, 11.0 — but against whom they scored 51 points in their two meetings of the season). CCSF held CSM to 42 net rushing yards in the NorCal title game.

Def. meters: 220.7 (53.9 rush, 166.8 pass).

Riverside has allowed 22.5 ppg. Def. meters: 338.6 (118.8 rush, 218.8 pass)

• QB Jack Newman (6-1, 190, Sun.), Bay 6 offensive POY; has the best collegiate efficiency rating in the National Division, 184.5, and leads all in passing yards, 3,359: 227 of 335, 36 TD, 5 int.

• WR Jeffrey Weimer (6-2, 205, Sun.), Unanimous All Bay 6: 75 pc (No. 1 State), 1,253 yards. (#1 state, person over 1,000 yards only), 16.7 average, 17 TD (#1 state).

• RB Shawn Allen (5-8, 170, Fr.), All-Bay 6: 100 tcb, 774 yds., 4.7 avg., 60.3 y/g, 10 TD.

• RB Devan Walker (5-9, 180, Sun.): 100 tcb, 454 yds., 4.5 avg., 6 TD.

• OL Munko “Buffalo” Kruize (6-6, 275, Sun.) All-Bay 6.

• DB D’Andre Greeley (6-0, 180, Sun), All-Bay 6, leads the state with nine interceptions, including those that ended the season from San Mateo with 5:35 left in the NorCal showdown -Title finished. After that, the Bulldogs never saw the ball again.

L DL Jahvius “JJ” Leui (5-11, 455, Fr.), Unan. All-Bay 6: 54 Tkls., 8 sacks, 18.5 TFL.

A city-owned building and aging mall in South San Francisco could one day be the site of a first city designed, operated, and sub-market developed by the city.

The idea was presented this week by Councilor James Coleman and the council agreed to move the idea forward and directed staff to conduct further research on this option. The planned development would include retail space combined with up to 1,000 units of affordable housing for residents of different income groups.

“This gives us an opportunity to try something new,” said Coleman. “Because right now we are living in the most separated time in American history.”

The existing building at 33 Arroyo Drive, currently the city’s municipal service building, will no longer be needed after the completion of a new community center across the street. The council hopes that the owners of the shopping center will work with the city on the proposed housing project.

Unlike other affordable housing developments, the proposal is unique in that the city is both owner and operator. While other cities, including San Francisco, have done this, it would be a first for South San Francisco.

The endeavor could prove difficult for the city, said Nell Selander, deputy director of the department for economic and community development.

“We are really not set up to operate apartments,” said Selander. “At least not on a large scale, and that would be a major boost for this city.”

The city traditionally works with property developers, often non-profit organizations that build and manage the property on projects below market price. The city would have to hire more staff – possibly even create a new department for this task.

However, Mayor Mark Addiego said he would like to see the city go ahead with the project anyway.

“When we go to bed with nonprofit developers, we give up property tax,” said Addiego. “At some point that has an impact on the entire operation that she may not be able to support. You need your healthy tax money so that everything works. “

Coleman said a private developer would not be able to maximize the potential for affordable units on the site because they would be interested in profit.

Logistical challenges aside, the final feasibility of the project will likely depend on the voters by June next year. According to Article 34 of the California Constitution, voters must first approve any publicly funded home. Last month the council instructed staff to work out a voting measure to this end.

If an agreement cannot be reached with the owner of the shopping center, the city could build a smaller residential complex with a maximum of 400 units on its share of the property. The urban part of the property is 2.2 hectares, while the mall is on 4 hectares.

A non-city-run development could also be built, using traditional developers to either a market-driven, partially affordable or fully affordable housing project.

Councilor Buenaflor Nicolas was in favor of the urban idea, but also recommended that the city find an affordable housing company in case things didn’t work out.

“It’s a great plan, it’s in the transit corridor, it’s a really first class property,” she said.

Vice Mayor Mark Nagales expressed his approval of the city-led idea.

“Here is an opportunity to really make a difference by trying to do what we’ve always talked about and make sure we have affordable housing,” he said. “We could possibly have a project that does this.”

City officials will present their results on the proposal at a future city assembly.

The San Francisco 49ers will try to confuse the eyes of Arizona defenders on Sunday.

With pre-snap motions, checks and various personnel packages, the 49ers will try to find or open a gap in the front of the Cardinals.

With the potential hole, the 49ers have quick running backs to break through before they close, or they can pull the ball back and take game actions.

Arizona has dealt with this type of scheme before.

Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach and play-caller for San Francisco in 2017, so much of the Cardinals staff has faced him several times.

These two teams faced each other in Week 5, although the San Francisco offense looked different with replacement quarterback Trey Lance for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo.

“It’s a really difficult undertaking to overcome,” said Vance Joseph, Cardinals defensive coordinator. “Kyle did a few different turns with the jets and the moves and the slashes and the hardest part on defense is the pre-snap. The move and the pre-snap moves usually break up the defense and that’s the hardest part.

“So it is our job to obviously have great details and focus on our tasks before hitting the ball. And it is my job to avoid the gaps with the right decisions.”

On both of the above moves, moving forward confused a defender’s eyes and affected the first step / reaction.

This created just enough time for speedster running back Elijah Mitchell, who averages 5.3 yards per carry this season.

Security Budda Baker said he anticipated a lot of 12 and 21 personnel groupings.

Many of the moves the 49ers use include their tight ends and full-back Kyle Juszczyk.

The tricky thing is that they also use these players in the passing game, which makes it difficult to decipher what is coming. Juszczyk is third on the team at receptions this year, just behind tight end George Kittle, who missed three games but will return on Sunday.

“You will be moving a lot of people,” said edge rusher Markus Golden. “If your eyes are lost and you’re looking at a narrow end while it moves all the way across the field when you look at it, they’ll snap the ball and you’re too late to do your job. You just have to be able to concentrate on your job. “

Edge rusher Chandler Jones added, “When you have a lot of moves and pulls and guys are walking sideways, you need to keep an eye on your man on your assignment as he can change in a split second.

“Shanahan does a great job moving up the gaps, giving you different looks, or giving you the same looks and giving you different things with the same exact look. So our job as defense is that everyone has to do their job to stay in their loopholes. “

Joseph said it was difficult to face a team that doesn’t change offense much, even with bigger players in the game. Bigger players also need to maintain their discipline against sets they are not used to.

With Garoppolo, the 49ers have returned to their usual running game. When Lance was below the middle, the rookie had a lot more run-pass options and led the team in a rush in Week 5.

That won’t be the case on Sunday, although Garoppolo may pull it from time to time.

With the moving parts and big bodies up front, the 49ers are what Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury called one of the most physical teams on the schedule.

The Golden State Warriors and longtime assistant coach Jarron Collins have mutually agreed to part ways in an effort to pursue head coaching and associate head coaching opportunities, he told ESPN The Undefeated on Monday.

Collins, 42, joined the Warriors as a player development coach ahead of the 2014-15 NBA championship campaign. The former NBA center was promoted to assistant coach at the Golden State Bank in the 2015-16 season. Collins has served as the Warriors’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons and led the franchise to a fifth overall standings last season. The Warriors won three NBA titles during Collins’s tenure.

“This is about myself and my personal growth,” Collins told ESPN The Undefeated. “I had a conversation with [head coach] Steve [Kerr] and the warriors. I’ve been there for seven years and trained Hall of Fame players. We won championships. I learned so much. For me, it’s about taking the next path and the next step in my career.

“Of course Steve Kerr is the head coach and Mike Brown is the senior assistant. It’s time for me to step out and see what opportunities arise for me.”

1 relatives

Collins interviewed the Chicago Bulls for 2020, the Memphis Grizzlies in 2019, and the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 as a head coaching job in the NBA. In 2019, he also turned down a job as senior assistant coaching under current Grizzlies trainer Taylor Jenkins.

Kerr said Collins has “all the skills” necessary to be an NBA head coach.

Collins was well respected and loved by the Warriors’ players. Warriors striker Draymond Green once described Collins’s defensive game plan as “[expletive] phenomenal “for the San Francisco Chronicle, while striker Marquese Chriss said it was” very beneficial “to have him in player development. Collins also built a reputation for developing easy-to-understand defensive fixtures and his meticulous approach to movie viewing .

“I will miss Jarron both personally and professionally,” Kerr said in a statement to The Undefeated. “He’s an excellent coach and a wonderful person. It will be different without him, but he deserves the chance to continue growing with the goal of eventually becoming the head coach of the NBA. Jarron has all the skills necessary. He’s a great one Teacher and communicator, he’s smart and funny and he knows the game. “

Collins has moved to his hometown of Los Angeles with his wife Elsa and three children. He said he has received some coaching interest from NBA teams. The Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics, and Orlando Magic have vacancies for a head coach. The former Stanford star would also be open to being head coach at the college level.

“There have been talks,” said Collins. “But I’ll be conscious and strategic with my next step. I want to be the head coach. We’ll look at all levels. We’ll look at the opportunities out there. I want to be a first.” – Assistant coach or head coach. I want to take the next steps. “

Drafted in the second round of the 2001 draft, Collins played 10 seasons in the NBA for Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, LA Clippers and Blazers.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – San Francisco is expected to move to the yellow tier reopening status next week based on its current case rates.

This means an increased capacity of up to 50% for places like gyms, cinemas and entertainment centers. The main changes affect bars and live performances.

This potential tier shift comes after San Francisco missed the mark a few weeks ago, but now with updated metrics for the state’s reopening tiers.

SFO closes the runway before the summer travel season

San Francisco is now qualified to move forward as long as the case rates stay the same.

San Francisco is expected to move to yellow tier status next week, meaning that bars that serve no food will be allowed to open 25% indoor capacity for the first time since the pandemic began, according to state guidelines.

“With the food component gone, I breathe that many, many bar owners breathe a sigh of relief because they no longer have to eat,” said Ben Bleiman.

Ben Bleiman, who owns several bars in San Francisco, including Tonic, Soda Popinski’s, and Teeth, says the yellow step change will help many bars in town get back on their feet.

Bay Area man hospitalized with blood clot after J&J vaccination

“Bar owner, we don’t have servers. We had to struggle to get all of the logistics and equipment for serving food and some places did it but others were just a real problem and cost a lot of money to work, a lot of money to equipment and then was the customer experience difficult So it’s a big deal that we’re doing what we do again, which is selling drinks, ”said Bleiman.

The yellow tier status would also allow live venues to increase their capacity.

However, most of the venues in the city say it’s still not enough to make a profit.

“Neither of them are really open and the limited capacity means you are spending more money on staff than you could possibly make on the door and bar,” said Devon Dossett.

Devon Dossett, manager of the DNA Lounge, says like many other live music venues in town.

San Francisco is no longer the most expensive US market for tech offices

They don’t plan on opening until after June 15th, the target date when California will aim to fully reopen.

The tier change comes after the state updates its yellow tier reopening metrics to an adjusted rate of two COVID cases per 100,000 residents, compared to the previous “yellow” tier threshold of 1 case per 100,000 residents.

“It makes sense. We are the community with the highest first-dose vaccination rate. We are 70% first-dose vaccination in the city of San Francisco. No other place has managed to get this high. The current national dose in the United States is 42.7% of the first dose which is so high that not only will it reduce transmission, but it will also make your cases very low. That makes your hospital stays very low, ”said Dr. Monica Gandhi.

The tier change would also come with good timing, as San Francisco announced plans for an outdoor graduation ceremony on Tuesday.

While these activities would be allowed under state guidelines, it is ultimately up to San Francisco to decide whether some or all are allowed.

KRON4 reached out to the health officer’s office on Tuesday, and while they haven’t been able to confirm what’s allowed or not, they said they are currently working on yellow plans.

Building on concerns raised during the social justice movement that summer, South San Francisco expressed an interest in establishing a monitoring committee to review the local law enforcement agency.

Members of the Mayors’ Commission on Social and Racial Justice examined possible roles and responsibilities of the proposed advisory committee during a meeting on Wednesday March 17.

Understanding that the committee’s powers are limited by collective agreements with the police union, hopes were shared that it could be an independent body that would ensure police accountability.

No decision was made at the meeting, but officials said the feedback provided would help formulate a program proposal that would ultimately require approval from the South San Francisco City Council.

Discussions about the idea follow a summer social justice movement in South City in which Black and Latin American residents, as well as others, regularly claimed to be victims of unequal treatment and enforcement by the police.

To address these concerns and a host of other people raised nationally after the Minneapolis police murder of George Floyd, South San Francisco officials hoped the proposed committee would be a place to go affected residents would feel safe to file complaints against law enforcement.

Although the specific responsibilities are still being examined, some suggested that it might be appropriate for the Advisory Board to be able to examine specific complaints against the police department. The committee would not have access to confidential information held in officers’ personal files, nor would it have the power to discipline the police.

However, the committee would have the opportunity to make policy recommendations to council members and to keep a close eye on enforcement trends and other specific data about the department.

The committee would be composed of appointed members and would focus solely on matters related to the police. The Mayors’ Commission, also formed following the Summer Social Justice Movement, is set to address a wide variety of justice issues, including housing, economic opportunities and other issues facing disenfranchised communities.

As guests from Portland, Oregon, and National City pondered how the South San Francisco committee should work, they shared their experiences on similar programs.

According to the guests, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that those who ultimately serve on the committee accurately reflect the diversity of the community. In addition, they suggested making the committee meetings open to the public, as with any other advisory council, to ensure transparency and build community trust.

Members of similar committees in other cities added that the programs can be effective tools for building and improving relationships between residents and police departments as ongoing discussions provide a better understanding of priorities and values.

For his part, Commissioner Norm Faria said he appreciated the insights of committee members from other cities, adding that it would be useful for him to get a feel for how the South San Francisco version should work.

“It was very useful to get an overview of how other cities are doing this,” he said.

Bobby Vaughn

Meanwhile, Commissioner Bobby Vaughn proposed the work of the committee along with the Chief Diversity Officer, whom South San Francisco officials also discussed recruitment at an earlier Equity Committee meeting.

“I think the chief diversity officer would play a role in setting up the advisory board,” he said.

City Manager Mike Futrell praised the proposal and called it an excellent idea. He said it will be taken into account alongside the various recommendations made by the commissioners, which will ultimately determine the format and responsibilities of the committee.
