MOUNTAIN VIEW (KPIX) – The town of Mountain View plans to keep Castro Street, the main thoroughfare in the city center, permanently closed and eventually convert it into a pedestrian mall.

The decision will keep the main resistor from 100 to 300 block closed. Mountain View, like other cities across the country, has expanded outdoor dining on public roads to keep businesses afloat during the pandemic.

“The pandemic has a silver lining and this is one of them,” said Margaret Abe-Koga, a member of Mountain View’s council.

The council’s decision came after a 90-minute study session on Tuesday during which council members heard a variety of options, which included the closure of parts of Evelyn Avenue.

Mayor Ellen Kamei said staff conducted surveys of business owners and downtown residents across the city and found widespread support for maintaining the closure.

“Over 82 percent of the blocks that closed were companies for closure, so this is something that will stay here. We heard from our congregation loud and clear that there was no need to reopen, ”said Kamei. “I think it was something of a glimmer of hope for everyone.”

Peter Katz, CEO of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce, said the city has resisted efforts to close Castro Street in the past, citing disturbances and opponents who argue that such a move would be “atypical” for the city. may be.

“We have had this experiment for almost a year and a half now and it worked very well. I don’t want to say that all companies thrive, but they survive, ”says Katz.

Katz said the Castro Street closure would complement Caltrain’s future electrification, which will affect access to the railroad line.

“This access from the Central Expressway to Castro will be closed anyway. So it is one of those things that we have to think intelligently about how to deal with it and how to build an infrastructure so that traffic and people can come in, ”said Katz.

Rose Lue, a frequent visitor to Castro Street, compared the atmosphere and ambience to street cafes in Paris.

“I like to eat outside and I feel like I’m in Europe. But we’re in America, ”said Lue. “There are tables and a unique look for every restaurant. It’s just an atmosphere of community. It’s just alive. “

The city will keep the temporary structures in place until at least January 2023. Employees will begin working with partners and stakeholders to make it permanent.

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) – Air District officials extended a Spare the Air Alert through Monday, urging Bay Area residents not to drive on the holiday weekend to reduce smog buildup.

The air alarm for smog is paired with an air quality warning for smoke, which will also be extended until Monday, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said.

CONTINUE READING: Captured a series of San Jose Saturday sideshows on camera

A combination of high temperatures, vehicle exhaust and forest fire smoke is expected to increase smog or ozone build-up.

“Restricting driving this holiday weekend can help reduce the build-up of harmful smog pollution,” said Veronica Eady, Air District senior deputy executive officer.

When a spare-the-air alarm goes off, outdoor exercise should only be done in the early hours of the morning, when ozone levels are lower, air district officials advise.

If temperatures allow, residents should stay indoors with the windows and doors closed until the smoke subsides. If it’s too hot inside, people should go to an air cooling center or other building that provides filtered air.

The Air District also recommends that people affected by flue gas air conditioners and car ventilation systems recirculate to prevent outside air from getting inside.

Air quality measurements are available at baaqmd.gov/highs.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued another air quality recommendation for the region due to forest fire smoke for Saturday.

It is the fourth day in a row that the BAAQMD has placed the Bay Area under an air quality recommendation. The region has also been under a Spare the Air Alert since Thursday – which prohibits burning wood or other solid fuels both indoors and outdoors. The Spare the Air Alert expires after Friday.

Today, 08/20, Save the Air Alert! The air quality in the Bay Area is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups in all regions. Tomorrow, 08/21, air quality advice! The air quality is expected to be good in Coast and Central Bay and South Central Bay, and moderate in all other regions. pic.twitter.com/2kdtMPWnvJ

– Bay Area Air Quality (@AirDistrict) August 20, 2021

According to a press release issued by BAAQMD, smoke from wildfires in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, which moved offshore since the middle of the week, will continue to affect the Bay Area on Saturday.

“We look at the unhealthy air quality down on the ground. We assume that in the orange category it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups, ”BAAQMD spokesman Aaron Richardson told KPIX 5.

The smoky air was inevitable for anyone outside in the Bay Area on Friday.

“You have this heavy feeling in your chest and it’s not an allergy,” said Kim Vostermans, who went on a bike ride with her friend Kelly Hodge in Campbell.

“It’s hard to exercise, it’s hard to walk, walk the dog, ride a bike. It’s hard to eat outside in this heat with the doors and windows open. It’s a shame, but again, we’re not the ones trying to fight the fires, ”Hodge told KPIX 5.

Rod Pomales rode his bike hard up Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose, the bad air in his eyes. “I can smell it a little. I don’t feel it, ”said Pomales.

The organizers of Campbell’s Boogie Music Festival – which has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic – are now hoping the air quality won’t keep people away this weekend.

CONTINUE READING: Afghan community in Fremont’s Little Kabul rallies in support of refugees

“I hope the wind picks up a little tonight and turns a little,” said Ken Johnson of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce.

Masks are optional at the festival but are now preferred for several reasons, including smoke.

“It will possibly give people a bigger reason to put their masks on when they didn’t want to. So the hope is to have fun and be safe, ”said Johnson.

The fires in Northern California burned more than 1 million acres, or 2,000 square miles, during this devastating fire season. The Dixie Fire – which is spread across five counties – burned over 700,000 acres alone.

The McFarlane fire in Counties Shasta, Trinity and Tehama burned nearly 116,000 acres, while the Caldor Fire in Sierra Nevada grew again overnight and has now consumed over 73,000 acres, firefighters said Friday.

The persistent smoke hovering over the area will cause foggy, smoky skies with a noticeable odor in the air in some areas, despite officials saying pollution levels were not expected to exceed federal health standards. The air quality in the air quality index is expected to be in the good to low medium range, so there is no Spare the Air Alert for Saturday.

The Air District will continue to monitor air quality across the region for smoke effects from ongoing forest fires.

If the smell of smoke is noticeable, Bay Area residents are advised to protect their health by avoiding exposure. All residents – especially those with breathing problems – are advised to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed until the smoke subsides, if temperatures allow. The BAAQMD also recommends that those affected by smoke turn their air conditioning and car ventilation systems on to recirculation to prevent outside air from getting inside.

Residents can track changes in air quality at baaqmd.gov/highs or on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map at fire.airnow.gov.

To find out when a spare-the-air alert is in effect, residents can register for text alerts by sending the word “START” to 817-57, register for email AirAlerts at sparetheat.org, 1 Call (800) HELP-AIR, download the Spare the Air app or connect with Spare the Air on Facebook or Twitter.

UNION CITY (KPIX) – California health officials said the number of ICU beds available in the San Francisco Bay Area continued to decline to 6.3 percent on Friday. As a result, many Bay Area health professionals are saying the stay at home order, which originally expires next week, is likely to be extended. San Francisco has already done this.

The possibility of a prolonged ban on outdoor dining worries many restaurant operators. The owner of Mexico Tipico in Union City invested thousands of dollars in its outdoor facilities and heat lamps. He was hoping to be able to use it again next week.

CONTINUE READING: Oakland Police are looking for clues in the 2011 murder of Bianca August

“All of the restaurants in this area are affected because there is now no store,” said Ricardo Soto, who manages Mexico Tipico. “The families who come down want to enjoy the food at the table, not to take away.”

Soto said an extension of the outdoor dining ban could result in further layoffs at his restaurant, but several restaurateurs said they weren’t surprised at the prospect of an extension.

“We panned so many times that I’m tired of spinning. I feel like I’m falling, ”said Eric Nielsen, a business associate at two restaurants in downtown San Jose. “We are concerned. This also feels vague. How does it look, even if we are open at the end of February? Are we actually open again for outdoor dining? And if so, I hope the public comes out again.”

David Canepa, head of San Mateo county, said he feels for the small businesses, but said ICU capacity is poor and that is exactly what the state sees in introducing the health regime.

“Right now we’re in lifesaving mode, make no mistake. So the actions we are taking today will really ensure that we are protected in the future, ”Canepa said.

The overseer said that about 5 percent of the county’s ICU beds are currently available. He urges the county health department to expand the health regime and follow San Francisco’s leadership.

“We don’t even calculate the numbers for December 25th, the Christmas numbers, and beyond that the New Years numbers,” said Supervisor Canepa.

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong is an infectious disease specialist at UCSF. He said hospitals are likely to see more COVID patients in the coming days due to holiday gatherings.

“It is inevitable that we will have an increase (caused by the Thanksgiving holiday) in addition to an increase (due to Christmas) in addition to an increase (due to illegal New Years Eve parties). For example, if you look at the trip around Christmas, it actually passed Thanksgiving, which was already the highest travel time of the year, ”said Dr. Chin-Hong.

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) – Hopes that the Bay Area could get out of the current COVID-at-home regulation was reality-checked Monday after Governor Gavin Newsom announced the region’s ICU capacity had fallen to a new low of 0.7%.

During its press conference on Monday to get an update on the COVID-19 pandemic in California, Newsom said that state director of health and human services, Dr. Mark Ghaly, likely on Tuesday, will announce the continuation of the stay-at-home order in the Bay Area.

CONTINUE READING: Asian-American attacks: victim’s grandson speaks out; Suspect arrested after stabbing 2 women in San Francisco

“Given the current ICU capacity, we can assume that the stay at home will continue unless these prognoses differ materially,” Newsom said.

The health order is triggered when the intensive capacity of a region falls below 15%. Currently, ICU capacities across the state were as follows:

Southern California: 0%
San Joaquin Valley: 0%
Bay Area: 0.7%
Greater Sacramento: 9.7%
Northern California: 35%

According to the state’s COVID dashboard, California has 2,710,801 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, resulting in 29,965 deaths. Other data from Johns Hopkins University showed the state topped 30,000 deaths.

Newsom re-listed the staggering number of casualties the pandemic has caused for residents of the state. Another 264 people died of COVID on Sunday, and an average of 476 people died per day over the past seven days. Another 5,681 people have died in the past 14 days, Newsom said.

The governor said there was evidence that the contagion rate had increased over the past week. While COVID hospital stays increased 6% in the past two weeks, they increased 0.3% in the past week. Similarly, there was a 13% increase in intensive care admissions in the last 14 days compared to a 5% increase in the last seven days.

Newsom said as part of California’s “all hands on deck” approach to adopting the COVID vaccine, the state has added the pool of those who can deliver COVID vaccines to dentists, pharmacy technicians, National Guard strike teams, paramedics, and rescue workers Doctors expanded assistants, midwives, psychiatric technicians, and others.

The governor also said the state was opening three major vaccination sites at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Padres Stadium in San Diego, and the CalEXPO racetrack in Sacramento to expedite vaccination for priority groups while maintaining social distancing with other facilities allow to be announced.

Later on Monday, Oakland Athletics and Alameda County’s health officials announced that the Oakland Coliseum would also host a drive-through vaccination clinic.

Newsom recalled that the current focus for vaccination continued to be on the first group of subjects, particularly in the healthcare sector and among residents of long-term care facilities.

“These frontline workers – that’s why we want to vaccinate the vaccines – so many of them themselves are among those categories of vaccines and the residents who are most vulnerable in these congregation facilities,” Newsom said. “We’ve teamed up with CVS and Walgreens, who make up the lion’s share – not in every county. LA County is a big exception – but especially and in terms of content in all of these other community care facilities. “

Newsom said the state has built-in flexibility to administer the more than two million doses being delivered into the next stages and stages of vaccine priority groups in the event that doses are queued where no one is on hand to handle the dose to obtain.

“And we’ll fill in details when we start getting more doses … We’re obviously going to need more doses to get into this next phase, and we hope to learn more with the new one.” [Biden-Harris] Administration soon what their intention is to release more of the stock of cans, ”Newsom said. “And we’re going to start seeing more clarity and then meet your expectations and set some schedules, or at least some expected schedules, so we can deal with the fear that I know will be felt out there when we have this availability to have.”

Newsom said the state is investing $ 40 million in a media campaign in 18 languages to get people to vaccinate.

During the Q&A session with reporters, Newsom was asked about concerns about the possibility of armed protests at the State Capitol in Sacramento following the deadly siege of the US Capitol last week

“The answer is pretty much taken for granted by anyone who has been near the Capitol, that everyone, I believe, is on high alert to make sure everyone is safe and secure,” Newsom said. People’s freedom of speech can be improved, but there is no violence. “

Newsom also said the National Guard would be activated “as needed”.

When asked about the possibility of President Donald Trump facing a second trial after instigating the US Capitol riot, Newsom said “I’m all for it” before returning his attention to the pandemic response.

“I’m focusing on this vaccine distribution, I’m focusing on the climb, I’m trying to drive to get us through this extraordinarily challenging period,” he said. “I support it … but that’s not my focus right now. My focus is openly on you, your family and your safety when it comes to issues related to getting us through this very challenging wave of this pandemic. “
