Yesterday at A/D/O, a MINI-sponsored creative space in Brooklyn, New York, seven start-ups pitched their companies to an audience of investors and public sector agencies as part of URBAN-X’s Demo Day. URBAN-X is an accelerator for urban tech companies that was launched in 2016 by BMW-owned car brand MINI, one of its many forays into rethinking shelter, fashion, and design. The seven start-ups are members of URBAN-X’s fifth cohort, bringing the total number of companies that URBAN-X has fostered to 39. URBAN-X selects up to 10 start-ups twice a year for its program, which includes a $150,000 investment and five months of support in engineering, design, and business development.

Urban mobility and access to electric vehicles featured prominently in this cohort, not a surprising theme for an incubator with roots in the automotive sector. But other strong trends, like construction site productivity and emissions efficiency, pointed to a focus on the built environment and its relationship with ecological concerns.

If this cohort is any indication of the trends in urban mobility, then the two startups dedicated to transit hinted at a very electric future. Borrow offers short-term, flexible leasing of electric vehicles, making them more available to those who can’t purchase the pricey cars, while Circuit, formerly The Free Ride, offers free electric shuttle transportation in five-passenger vehicles for short distances. The latter is already rolled out in 17 cities around the United States, with more than 20 cars on the streets of San Diego. With funding from advertisers, private developers, and transit agencies, the free shuttle is specially designed for first- and last-mile conditions to supplement other forms of transit, and also offers hail and on-demand services. Brooklyn residents and visitors can experience Circuit for themselves, with the company extending its Williamsburg run this summer.

Buildstream and Toggle both address construction site safety and other challenges. Buildstream (formerly GearBuddy) utilizes IoT-based software and machine learning to digitize data collection on heavy construction equipment like bulldozers and trucks to monitor and assess construction sites in real time, allowing someone at an office desk and not just the construction manager on site to monitor what is happening. The technology is currently in use in the U.K. on one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects, according to David Polanski, co-founder and COO of the company. Toggle, on the other hand, combines software and industrial robotics to help automate the construction site and reduce costs in the building process.

Energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions are also a central concern of this year’s cohort. Treau develops technology to improve energy efficiency in cooling and heating systems, essentially bringing HVAC and refrigerants into the modern age with lighter, more inexpensive polymers and other material innovations. The overarching promise of Treau is to reduce energy consumption in the U.S. by 10 percent.

Another vital but less glamorous aspect of city life is waste management infrastructure. Israel-based GreenQ‘s technology attaches to existing truck-based garbage collection systems to collect data and offer analytics to help meet demand and cut costs where needed. For example, in its applications across Israel cities, towns, and villages, GreenQ has identified areas that need one less collection day a week, or data on what homes or users need larger trash receptacles. The data from the garbage also delivers demographic data for those companies it partners with. Consumption and waste were also addressed by Thrilling, the first e-commerce platform for second-hand and vintage stores, with a goal of reducing carbon, waste, and water footprints in garment production.

From transit to garbage, the technology-driven platforms of these start-ups hints an increasingly wired, mobile urban future to come.

San Francisco’s push to use a major international conference to reverse its image as a city in decline is getting off to a rocky start.  

A Czech journalist and his camera crew were robbed at gunpoint Sunday evening by three armed assailants, according to a statement from the San Francisco police. The incident occurred in the North Beach neighborhood, about two miles from the city’s downtown, where world leaders are meeting for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. 

“The suspects demanded their production equipment and the victims complied,” the police said. “The suspects then entered their vehicle and fled from the scene.” 

North Beach is a busy tourist area known for its Italian restaurants and City Lights, a landmark bookstore made famous by beatnik poets such as Allen Ginsberg. The San Francisco Chronicle, which earlier reported the robbery, said Czech TV journalist Bohumil Vostal was filming the bookshop at dusk to capture the city’s beauty. 

The camera equipment was valued at $18,000 and San Francisco Mayor London Breed has promised the city will help replace it, according to the newspaper. 

The incident occurred as San Francisco hosts legions of international delegates, world leaders and journalists for the APEC event. While most of the attention is focused on a planned meeting between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping of China, San Francisco is hoping to use its moment on the world stage to encourage tourism and pitch itself as a thriving hub of innovation. 

Municipal workers have been been power-washing sidewalks, moving homeless people, and sprucing up buildings in its downtown core, all in hopes that visitors will see a positive side of the city. 

San Francisco has notoriously high property crime rates, and local television crews have been known to travel with armed guards. However, homicide rates are below those of cities such as Austin, Miami and Washington, DC, according to federal and local data.

A documentary crew said it filmed a scene in San Francisco on Wednesday saying their cars were broken into and thieves stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

The incident happened in broad daylight at the end of Lombard Street.

Eli Steele and Terrell Allen, the two independent filmmakers, told NBC Bay Area that they tried calling 911 to report the robbery. But they have been separated several times.

“We were parked behind this red truck,” Steele said.

Just after 11 a.m., Steele and his crew left his rental SUV for just 10 minutes to film a scene. When they returned, they found his car’s window had been smashed and his camera equipment stolen.

“We lost $30,000. So it’s a great achievement,” he said.

Minutes later, Allen said he saw people trying to break into another car.

“I run over there and say, ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ Stop it, stop it!’” Allen said. “Pulls a gun on me. Of course I’ll stop. They have moved three cars down. They didn’t walk a block. They didn’t move on, they didn’t go. They literally knocked out three cars.”

NBC Bay Area reached out to the San Francisco Police Department for comment Wednesday but received no response. However, police told the San Francisco Standard that they have the filmmaker’s police reports.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

Several people sustained injuries Saturday when air conditioners collapsed at the Gaylord Rockies Resort in Aurora. Although two people suffered life-threatening injuries, Aurora Fire Rescue said the investigation into the collapse was being conducted by the resort. Authorities said six people were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Aurora Fire Chief Alec Oughton told the press during a press conference following the incident that Gaylord’s management team was responsible for the investigation. He emphasized that this is not a fire department investigation, but rather an internal investigation by the resort to determine the incident and find answers.

A resort guest told news outlets that the resort was evacuated after a fire alarm went off. The witness saw an injured child receiving medical attention on the pool deck. They determined that the collapsed equipment appeared to be a pool channel.

The witness recorded videos of the injured being treated on the indoor pool deck. Another person said they were informed by resort staff that there was a ventilation failure and that there were at least two casualties.

Trevor Spykerman, a 12-year-old resort guest who was at the scene of the accident, reported that the collapse lasted about 15 seconds and described how it happened in slow motion. He saw that no one was injured in the collapse, but observed a man with red spots on his back shortly after the incident. The resort staff and lifeguards responded immediately, followed later by paramedics and evacuated the building.

Fire Chief Oughon said the first call about a building collapse was received at 9:50 a.m. Some units were already on site and trained in the hotel and were the first to react. There were between 50 and 100 people in the pool area at the time and there is currently no evidence as to what led to the incident. Gaylord Rockies management and the fire department are investigating the incident. There is currently no risk of a future collapse.

The home equity rehabilitation program aims to make home renovation more affordable for low- to middle-income homeowners in the city.

The program provides eligible applicants with loans and grants for emergency home repairs. City officials clarified that the program is NOT intended for routine maintenance repairs to systems or equipment.

Eligible emergency responses under the program include replacement of defective air conditioning units; remediation of electrical, gas and plumbing hazards; correcting defective roof/ceiling assemblies in life-threatening situations; and make changes to accessibility and usability.
