EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The exodus of UTEP players out of the men’s basketball program continued on Wednesday afternoon.

Souley Boum, the leading scorer in Conference USA in 2021-22 at 19.9 points per game, announced on social media that he was entering his name in the NBA Draft, while also maintaining his collegiate eligibility and entering his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Boum thanked UTEP fans and the city of El Paso in a social media post. Boum was an integral part of the Miners team under both Rodney Terry and Joe Golding after transferring in from San Francisco in 2018.

In addition to entering the Portal, Souley Boum has also entered his name in the NBA Draft. Keeping his options open. https://t.co/vC3YffOLo8

— Colin Deaver (@ColinDeaverTV) April 6, 2022

“All the memories UTEP has brought me will be cherished in my hear forever, and I am forever blessed to wear UTEP across my chest,” Boum said in a statement.

A three-year starter for the Miners, Boum was the Miners’ leading scorer in 2020-21 and 2021-22 and his play under Golding greatly improved this past season. In addition to leading C-USA in scoring, Boum averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and shot 37% from three-point range.

He also recorded the second triple-double in UTEP history on March 19 in a win over Western Illinois in the first round of The Basketball Classic (20 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists).

A few minutes after Boum entered the Portal, guard Cam Clardy followed suit. A walk-on, Clardy played in just 14 games for UTEP in 2021-22.

Guard Kezza Giffa also entered the Transfer Portal after Boum and Clardy did on Wednesday afternoon. A native of France, Giffa played sparingly last season, averaging just 3.7 minutes in 14 games.

Boum’s departure makes him the 10th member of the 2021-22 UTEP roster to leave – so far – since the season ended. Alfred Hollins graduated; Christian Agnew, Clardy, Giffa, Bonke Maring, Jorell Saterfield and Emmanuel White entered the Transfer Portal; Tydus Verhoeven and Boum entered both the NBA Draft and the Portal, keeping their options open; and Jamal Bieniemy turned pro while hiring an agent, ending his collegiate career.

Sources told KTSM that UTEP expected to lose 9-10 players from the 2021-22 roster and have to replace them. So far, that is playing out. The one to watch now will be guard Keonte Kennedy, who has yet to make an announcement either way. Kennedy missed much of the season with a foot injury, but averaged 14.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in 2021-22.

Also hitting UTEP on Wednesday was the departure of assistant coach Butch Pierre. According to a report from Jon Rothstein, Pierre is heading to Wichita State to join Isaac Brown’s staff.

Sources: Wichita State’s Isaac Brown will hire Butch Pierre as an assistant coach.

Highly experienced assistant who has been a very successful recruiter over his career.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 6, 2022

A well-regarded recruiter, Pierre helped bring multiple players to El Paso in year one under Joe Golding, including Jamari Sibley. The timing of Pierre’s departure could hurt UTEP because as the Miners are in need of bringing in top players, their top recruiter is on his way out.

Time will tell where UTEP goes from here, but expect there to be more changes before the end of the week.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin said Thursday he will be entering treatment for alcohol dependency.

In a statement, the District 3 supervisor thanked his friends, family, colleagues and staff for standing by his side as he confronted his personal issues.

“After serious consideration, I have decided to enter into alcohol treatment under the guidance of professionals,” he said. “I stand by my long legislative and civic record but must also take full responsibility for the tenor that I have struck in my public relationships — for that, I am truly sorry.”

He added, “I seriously take my duties and responsibilities as a community member and public official and remain deeply committed to the issues and legislative agenda that I have pursued on behalf of the people of San Francisco for two decades.”

Peskin was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2000 and served for eight years, then was elected to the board again in 2015. His district includes neighborhoods like Nob Hill, North Beach, Chinatown and the Financial District.

A late-summer storm system over the Gulf of Alaska will move south in the coming days, bringing a chance of rain to water-starved, wildfire-prone Northern California. It may potentially deliver a sprinkling to the San Francisco Bay Area and wet many of the wildfires that have burned for weeks, the National Weather Service said.

While the forecast will likely shift later this week, as of Tuesday morning weather models showed the window for rain in the Bay Area running from Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

“The greatest chance is in the North Bay,” said Jeff Lorber, a meteorologist with the weather service.

The chance for rain stands at about 20% for Napa and Sonoma counties, 15% for San Francisco and 10% in the South Bay, Lorber said.

Latest Climate Prediction Center outlook shows high probability of below normal temps and above normal predict this weekend and early next week in the PacNW as a trough moves onshore. Might some premise reach the #BayArea?? We’re keeping an eye on it. #CAwx pic.twitter.com/PU3YfRO01j

— NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) September 14, 2021

The Pacific Northwest is expected to receive a soaking of rain Friday into Saturday. It’s unclear how well the system will hold together as it pushes into the water-starved Golden State, and Lorber said these storms often fall apart as they move south.

“It will reach the Pacific Northwest and, depending on how deep this trough becomes, will determine how far south the rain goes,” he said.

California is desperate for rain as reservoir levels sink to record low levels and the vegetation on the ground is parched and highly flammable after two consecutive dry winters.

The Dixie Fire, 250 miles northeast of San Francisco, has been burning for two months and is approaching 1 million acres. The Caldor Fire led to evacuations in South Lake Tahoe. Both of these blazes could benefit from moisture.

“It is a low-confidence forecast, but the best chances would probably be over the Dixie Fire over the Caldor Fire,” said Emily Heller, a forecaster with the weather service’s Sacramento office. “The further south we go, the less probability there is. The best chances would most likely be in the Saturday to Sunday timeframe, and as of right now we’re not expecting heavy rain or thunderstorms.”

Cooler temperatures are expected later this week with rains spreading into the area Friday night and Saturday. Storm total #rainfall through the weekend is expected to range from nearly 2″ across the N Del Norte mountains to a few hundredths of an inch in S Lake County. #CAwx pic.twitter.com/Nw686Ou4Vu

— NWS Eureka (@NWSEureka) September 14, 2021

The far northwest corner of California is expected to see the most rain over the weekend event; up to 2 inches is possible in the mountains of Del Norte County. Crescent City is forecast to see 1.36 inches, Yreka 0.54 inch and Shasta 0.42 inch, the weather service’s Eureka office said.

The forecast is likely to change in coming days as weather models are often in disagreement over the first storms of the rainy season.

“With these early season storm systems, often the models are overly optimistic,” said Lorber, noting that even the slightest bit of drizzle would still be beneficial with the dry vegetation. “Any rain is good news with the really dry fuels. Moisture is really desperately needed, as we have near-record dry fuels.”

The rain just keeps coming.

The second weak storm of the week will sweep the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday; During the night from Thursday to Friday, another system can bring light showers to the north bay.

A rain break is expected for the weekend, but the drought will not last long. Long-term weather models show that a weak atmospheric river dips into the region and brings soaked rain from Monday to Tuesday.

This is good news for the San Francisco Bay Area, which along with the rest of California is facing dire drought conditions after two consecutive dry winters. This year, the rainy season started on October 1st and is already promising as the region is seeing above average rainfall for the month.

“We’re taking it,” said Drew Peterson, a meteorologist with the Bay Area Meteorological Service office. “California is a festival or hunger state. We tend to swing back and forth. We’re often way below or way above, and it’s hard to get that average rainfall.”

A thick blanket of fog hung on the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday morning, hampering driving conditions across the region. The weather service issued a thick fog warning for the North Bay Coast, San Francisco and the San Francisco Peninsula coast earlier this morning, warning of a quarter mile or less of road visibility. “Use your low beam and keep a safe distance,” warned the weather service. The fog is supposed to clear after 9 a.m.

Wednesday mornings and afternoons are dry and mild with cloud cover increasing in the late afternoon and evening. A cold front from the north will fall into the North Bay between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. and move through the central Bay Area around midnight.

Peterson described the system as weak. The weather service forecast total rainfall of 0.5 to 1.5 inches for the coast of Sonoma County, up to 0.5 inches for the Sonoma Valley, up to 0.25 inches over the San Francisco Peninsula and into the Santa Cruz Mountains and less than 0.1 inches in South Bay, East Bay and along the central coast.

“It will definitely weaken and taper as it pulls in,” said Peterson. “We have a lot of pressure downstream and when we have that it weakens these systems.”

The showers could last through Thursday morning, resulting in a cool Thursday afternoon and dry and cold conditions on Friday.

A weak system moving across distant Northern California could cut off North Bay on Friday, delivering drizzle and light rain. The central Bay Area is expected to remain dry.

The weather service said long-term models tend to be a dry weekend with a wet storm approaching the region from Monday night to Tuesday. The weather service described the storm in its forecast as a weak atmospheric flow. Preliminary storm totals show the storm will bring 1-plus inch of rain to the area, but it’s still too far away to pinpoint.

“I see we have heavier rainfall earlier this week,” said Peterson. “It’s still on the right track. I wouldn’t say it’s a slam dunk at this point. But given the progressive weather this season, I’d say the odds are higher. Often times these systems roll in and will.” blocked by. ” a big high pressure comb, and we don’t have that. And that’s what I mean by progressing. The storms keep coming. ”
