SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to move the headquarters of SpaceX and social media company X from California to Texas.

Musk posted on X on Tuesday that he plans to move SpaceX from Hawthorne, California, to the company's rocket launch site, called Starbase, in Texas. X will move from San Francisco to Austin.

He called a new law signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday that prohibits school districts from requiring their staff to inform parents of their child's change of gender identity “the last straw.”

“I made it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote.

Tesla, where Musk is CEO, moved its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin in 2021.

Musk also stated that he changed his residence from California to Texas, where there is no state income tax.

SpaceX builds and launches its giant Starship rockets at the southern tip of Texas at Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border, at a site called Starbase. The company's smaller Falcon 9 rockets launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Southern California.

It is located just below South Padre Island and about 20 miles from Brownsville.

Elon Musk says he is moving his companies out of California.

In two posts on X Tuesday, the billionaire said he would move SpaceX headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas, a corporate development being built in the south of the state. The social media platform X will move from San Francisco to Austin, Texas, he said.

Musk said the SAFETY Act – a bill signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom that would prohibit school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents if a child wishes to identify as a different gender – was “the straw that broke the camel's back.”

“Due to this law and many others before it that attacked both families and businesses, SpaceX will now move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas,” Musk posted on X.

One of Musk's children filed a petition in a California court in 2022 to acknowledge her new name and gender, stating that she no longer wanted to be related to her famous and wealthy father “in any way.” Musk has been criticized for some of his statements on gender identity issues on X.

In a follow-up post, Musk said he was fed up with the violent crime surrounding the San Francisco building where X is located.

Musk has had a fondness for the Lone Star State for several years. In February, SpaceX filed to move its headquarters from Delaware to Texas after a Delaware state judge invalidated Musk's 2018 Tesla pay package, siding with a shareholder who challenged it as excessive.

In 2021, Musk said he would move Tesla headquarters from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas. And Musk said in December 2020 that he had moved to Texas.

Billionaire Elon Musk said Tuesday he will move the headquarters of private company SpaceX and social media site X from California to Texas, calling Governor Gavin Newsom's decision to sign a new law on student gender identity “the last straw.”

The law, signed Monday, prevents school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents of changes in a student's gender identity or sexual orientation without the child's consent. It also requires the state Department of Education to provide resources for families of LGBTQ+ students in seventh grade through high school.

“This is the last straw,” Musk wrote on X. “Because of this law and many others before it that attacked both families and businesses, SpaceX will now be moving its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas.”

Musk added that he “made it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children.”

In another post, the billionaire added that the headquarters of X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, will be moving from San Francisco to Austin, Texas.

“I'm tired of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building,” Musk wrote on X.

Critics argue that the bill is too invasive and undermines parents' rights. One group opposing the bill, the California Family Council, said it “undermines their fundamental role and puts boys and girls in potential danger.”

Meanwhile, supporters said the bill would provide necessary protections for transgender students whose parents live in disapproving households. The law takes effect in January.

In a separate response to an X post by “All In” podcast host Jason Calacanis, Musk said the law would cause “many families and businesses to move out of California.”

“Who would want to risk having their children taken away from them by the government?” Musk said.

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott said Musk's move “solidifies Texas' leadership in space exploration.”

Musk had already moved the physical headquarters of his electric car maker Tesla from California to Texas in 2021 after confrontations with Newsom and other local authorities over their pandemic policies.

In a separate move, Tesla moved its headquarters from Delaware to Texas earlier this year. Musk pushed for the change after a Delaware judge rejected his pay package on the grounds that it was excessive.

While renaming Twitter to X would effectively mark the end of an era for the app, this would be a physical manifestation of the same.

According to X owner Elon Musk, the company now plans to move out of San Francisco in protest against changes to California law with which he disagrees.

Yesterday, Governor of California Gavin Newsom signed a law prohibiting school districts from notifying parents if their child uses different pronouns or identifies as a different gender than that indicated on their school report card. The change is intended to protect LGBTQ+ youth by countering “forced outing,” but many believe the change harms families by withholding such information from parents.

And Musk, who has had personal experience in this area with his own children, is anything but happy with the update.

In response to the announced change, Musk stated that this was “the straw that broke the camel’s back”:

“Because of this and many other laws before it that targeted both families and businesses, SpaceX will now move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas. And X The headquarters will be moved to Austin.”

Musk says he warned Newsom about the potential impact of such a change and also mentioned problems with gangs and “violent drug addicts” in the streets surrounding the X building that contributed to his decision.

This alone is a landmark and was for a long time the heart of the global Twitter empire.

Almost immediately after taking over the company, Musk made changes to the building: he reworked the Twitter sign, renamed conference rooms and offices, consolidated teams into smaller groups, cleared out large parts of the facility, and finally, after renaming the company, sold numerous Twitter artifacts.

Musk also had a temporary X erected on the roof of the building, but it had to be removed after complaints.

In fact, Musk's move of X's headquarters to Austin is just an extension of his ongoing efforts to transform the company formerly known as Twitter into a separate creation that will likely function better in closer proximity to Tesla's headquarters.

Still, if it happens, it would be a major upheaval, as a major technology company moves out of San Francisco and potentially loses many of its technical talent.

I mean, this really isn't a surprise. Musk has been threatening to move the company out of San Francisco all along, and it's also worth noting that he has actually done nothing on that front so far.

And maybe the additional costs and complications of an office move are still prohibitive at this point. But the desire is there, and Musk wants to drive X out of Silicon Valley, as he wants to start his own tech hub in Texas instead.

In some ways, this would mark the end of an era. But in reality, that era is long over. X is not Twitter, and what the app once was is very different from what it is today.

A physical move to Texas would also be a symbolic redesign of the new state of X.

When asked about his estranged transgender daughter in October 2022, Musk told the Financial Times, “You can't win them all,” and claimed to have a good relationship with all of his other children.
