SAVANNAH, Georgia (WSAV) – Roto-Rooter Plumbing of Savannah donated $ 5,000 to a nonprofit to provide local youth training opportunities in plumbing, HVAC, and electrical engineering.

Sherry Daniel, owner and CEO, presented Xcel Strategies founder Jay Thompson with a check to partially fund a new initiative, including a mobile HVAC, electrical and plumbing trailer. Xcel is a mentoring network founded in Savannah in 2012 to help young men aged 15-25 develop their life and career skills.

“Xcel Strategies is exactly the kind of organization we love to support,” said Daniel. “One of our missions at Roto-Rooter is to encourage young people to look into career opportunities in the craft sector, which can offer a challenging and rewarding career. When we heard that Xcel Strategies wanted to launch a sanitary trailer for his boys, we knew we had to support him. “

Xcel Strategies says its mission is to “empower young men with purpose,” especially boys and men at risk, by providing a network of mentors. Xcel Offers Life Skills Training; Career advice from partners in business, schools and churches; and job placement through training, internships and full-time employment.

This year, Xcel has focused on commercial jobs that are well paid and in high demand.

“A passage in a book by Booker T. Washington inspired me to make commerce mobile,” Thompson said, “to get the message right to the neighborhood.”

This year, trailers with workstations came onto the market that demonstrate practical tasks and duties in construction and vehicle repairs. Roto-Rooter is one of five donors for the upcoming HVAC, electrical and sanitary trailer.

Workshop courses with Roto-Rooter master plumbers and practical lessons are also planned.

Roto-Rooter is a vital partner in training young people in the plumbing trade and transitioning them to the job,” said Thompson.

The new HVAC, electrical and plumbing trailer is expected to be in use by the end of the year.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (CNN) – The incredible story of a Maryland handyman who risked his own life to help a needy neighbor might not have happened six years ago without some arbitrary kindness.

It all started six years ago at a bus stop in Gaithersburg, Maryland, when Doug Shumway did something extraordinary.

“I happened to notice someone who was standing at the bus stop. It was a winter day and I realized I could take this person with me, ”Shumway said.

Handyman Dan Reynolds donated a kidney to his neighbor Tony Antonelli. The transplant was completed on February 23, and the two men are now recovering at home.(Source: GoFundMe)

That person was Dan Reynolds, who agreed to go because 10 inches of snow covered the ground and it was 15 degrees outside. The two men talked, and Shumway learned that Reynolds was a contractor, so he hired him to fix some plumbing.

The job lasted a few days, and before Reynolds left, he admitted he was homeless. After a divorce and heavy debt, he had lived in a van for two years.

Shumway offered him a place to stay.

“That’s how we should be as humans. If so, give up, ”said Shumway.

Reynolds has lived with Shumway ever since. He quickly became a household name in the neighborhood and began working as a handyman for other families. Tony Antonelli was one of his clients.

One day Reynolds was mowing grass at Antonelli’s house and noticed that he looked uncomfortable. Antonelli told him that his kidneys were failing and that he needed a transplant.

“I said, ‘Well, if it can be done, I’d be honored to give you one of mine,'” Reynolds said.

“It was a complete shock, out of the blue, and honestly, you can’t make that up,” said Antonelli.

Miraculously, the two men made a perfect match. The transplant was completed on February 23rd and they are now recovering at home.

“There’s a reason Dan is in my life and it’s to save my life. I can’t thank him enough, ”said Antonelli.

To fund the operation, Reynolds’ friends organized a GoFundMe that raised more than $ 25,000. They also hope his story will inspire others to become organ donors.

“It’s not difficult to help one another, to do things for one another. Keep paying, ”Reynolds said.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – The Ronald McDonald House charity in the Bay Area ensures parents can stay close to their hospital child without incurring hotel and meal costs. During the pandemic, their program was suspended until Charles Schwab, San Francisco’s financial services company, stepped in.

They hope that other companies will be inspired to do the same.

Laura Boudreau, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities Bay Area, said ahead of COVID-19 they could serve up to 150 meals from her room at UCSF Mission Bay San Francisco and UCSF Oakland hospital.

“Every day we had volunteers and business groups helping us prepare meals, and families could sit down and enjoy a meal – a little rest in their day. But when COVID started we had to close our common room,” Boudreau said.

Boudreau said there was a break in church services but no break in teething. When Charles Schwab called in June, they were looking forward to a partnership.

“This is the time when people think about how we can help each other with this,” said Boudreau.

WATCH: The SF cook on leave helps turn discarded food into elaborate meals for people in need

Charles Schwab offered his catering service as nobody went to the office.

“We’ve actually served 3,000 meals since we started this partnership in June. It’s just amazing,” said Boudreau.

Jill Blanks and her family are from Fresno. Her 10 month old son Jensen is on the UCSF Mission Bay campus due to pulmonary hypertension, a long-term disease. Blanks said she was extremely grateful for all of the support.

“The fact that we are provided with all of these things that would have cost us so much along the way has really allowed us to be better parents and really focus on our child’s well-being,” said Blanks.

RELATED: 12-year-old collects more than 9,000 diapers for families in need

She said lunch even brought some parents together. Spaces said it was more than just a meal.

“It not only nourishes our physical body, but also our soul, that’s why we’re just so grateful. We have learned that there are so many good people out there who want to take care of families who are going through a lot of trauma. We just have the feeling that it makes us feel the kindness that comes from the people in our community, “said Blanks.

Boudreau is unsure how long Schwab will be offering its services.

“We don’t know for sure, we really didn’t think it would take that long. We also didn’t think COVID would last that long. We’re just grateful for the time Charles Schwab was able to give us and you know “I think this is an exciting way for companies to get involved and we would love to see other companies get involved,” said Boudreau.
