INDIANAPOLIS – The NFL will enter the final quarter of the season with this week’s games.

Week 14 is the last weekend in which teams have a bye. After Monday night, every team will have played 13 games with four left on their schedule. Weeks 15-18 will feature a full slate of 16 games.

Our “Big Game Bound” marquee matchup this week is Tampa Bay at San Francisco as the 49ers try to win their sixth straight game.

BGB host Chris Hagan talks with KRON’s Kate Rooney about whether or not the Niners can keep the good times rolling now that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is out with a foot injury.

This week’s show features reports from the Raiders, Bills and Giants. We’ll also check in with former NFL running back Jarrett Payton for his weekly picks.

“Big Game Bound” streams every Thursday at 12 pm ET leading up to Super Bowl LVII in Arizona.

Lyft, the ride-hailing tech giant headquartered in San Francisco, is laying off about 60 people — in addition to entirely shuttering a division of its company.

A Lyft spokesperson said that the layoffs are primarily in this shuttered division as well as operations workers. According to the Wall Street Journal, which first broke the news, the layoffs comprise less than 2% of his workplace. (One count estimates that Lyft had 4,453 employees at the end of 2021.) Lyft announced Wednesday that it would be shuttering its first-person rental service, Lyft Rentals — and confirmed to SFGATE that the layoffs are largely in rentals.

The service launched in December 2019 — just months before the COVID-19 pandemic, which likely put strain on the service’s viability. It will maintain its third-party rentals service in partnership with Sixt and Hertz.

“We have decided to discontinue Lyft’s first party Rentals business to focus on our best-in-class third party Rentals with Sixt and Hertz,” a Lyft spokesperson told SFGATE in a statement. “This decision will ensure we continue to have national coverage and offer riders a more seamless booking experience.”

Discussions about ceasing its first-party rentals service, Lyft Vice President Cal Lankton said, according to the Journal, “accelerated as the economy made the business case unworkable.”

The Wall Street Journal report also says that as part of a company restructuring, Lyft is also closing a global operations office in Northern California.

These Lyft layoffs come among others during a particularly rough period for the tech industry, as economic headwinds have led once-bullish investors to dial back on funding. In May, its direct rival Uber announced a hiring freeze — as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called for the company to “be even more hardcore about costs across the board.” Also on Wednesday, Google announced a two-week hiring freeze.

Lyft did not provide any details on laid-off employees’ severance benefits.

Despite what the company called a “better than we expected” Q1 in May, Lyft stock has plummeted to $14.70 a share as of Thursday morning, a third of its value from the beginning of the year.

San Francisco 49ers’ 2022 win total: Best bet

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday, May 17 at 8:35 am ET.

Over/Under: 9.5 (O: -150 | U: +125)

The 49ers won 10 games last season. They lost several starters and are moving on from QB Jimmy Garoppolo as they appear poised to turn to second-year QB Trey Lance to run the offense.

Coach Kyle Shanahan is 39-42 leading the 49ers. Garoppolo is 31-14 as a starter for the 49ers, which means Shanahan is 8-28 when he has someone other than Garoppolo starting.

Is Lance already ready to lead a playoff-contending team? That is the question.

I would not put money on the Over. I consider passing on this but I LEAN UNDER 9.5 WINS (+125).

San Francisco 49ers’ 2022 Super Bowl odds

Odds: +1500 (bet $100 to win $1,500)

The 49ers are firmly considered a contender for the Super Bowl following their run to the conference championship. Only 5 teams have shorter odds. The favorites to win the Super Bowl this next season are the Buffalo Bills (+600) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+700).

The Houston Texans have the longest odds at +20000.

At +1500, San Francisco has an implied probability of winning the Super Bowl of 6.25% or 15/1 fractional odds.

Conventional wisdom says that makes them worth at least a small wager to win it all. However, citing the 8-28 record the 49ers have since Shanahan became head coach when anyone other than Garoppolo starts, that isn’t a wager you can confidently make with Lance as the starter. This is not like Patrick Mahomes coming in as the starter for the Chiefs in his second season. He was a much more accomplished player than Lance was coming out of college.

PASSPORT.

San Francisco 49ers’ 2022 playoff odds

Will 49ers make the playoffs: Yes -220 | No +175

San Francisco was one of the 3 wild card teams last season and did make it to the NFC Championship Game before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

The odds suggest overwhelming optimism they will return to the postseason. The price makes it such that it isn’t worth it to bet on them making it.

However, the price for the 49ers not making the playoffs is tempting.

You look at the losses they had in free agency and their history without Garoppolo as their start and you wonder why the odds are what they are. The teams expected to win their respective divisions are the Rams, Bucs, Packers and Cowboys. After them, the wild-card race really is wide open.

Unless Lance is much better than he was a season ago, you have to really look hard at them missing the playoffs. I LEAN 49ERS DO NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS (+175).

Odds to win NFC West Division

Los Angeles Rams +135 (bet $100 to win $135)

San Francisco 49ers +175 (bet $100 to win $175)

Arizona Cardinals +320 (best $100 to win $320)

Seattle Seahawks +1300 (bet $100 to win $1,300)

The 49ers are viewed as legitimate contenders for the NFC West title. The champion Rams with Matthew Stafford at quarterback and 3 stars leading the defense in Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey and Bobby Wagner are +135, while the 49ers are +175 with an unproven and largely untested young quarterback.

I’m not optimistic. PASSPORT.

Odds to win NFC

odds: +650 (bet $100 to win $650)

Again, there are high hopes for the 49ers as only the Buccaneers, Rams and Packers have shorter odds. Their quarterbacks are Tom Brady, Stafford and Aaron Rodgers.

Do we really think that Lance will lead the 49ers over those teams and quarterbacks?

Officials with the FBI’s San Francisco Division on Thursday announced a new strategy to combat hate crimes – amid an increase in hate crimes reported against Asian Americans and Pacific islanders.

As part of the new strategy, the FBI will train more special agents to investigate hate crimes and civil rights, as well as contact community groups, religious organizations and minority groups to build trust and encourage the public to report hate crimes.

To further raise awareness and promote the reporting of hate crimes, the FBI launched a public awareness campaign on social media and through ads on Muni trains in San Francisco.

The strategy also aims to work with local and state law enforcement partners across Northern California to provide assistance and training on federal hate crime laws. In addition, law enforcement partners are encouraged to refer possible federal hate crime cases to the FBI, which in some cases could aid the investigation as the federal investigation could run in parallel with and in coordination with local law enforcement investigations.

By working with local law enforcement agencies, the FBI will provide resources such as forensic expertise and experience in identifying and demonstrating hate-based motivation even when no charges are brought against the federal agencies.

Residents who believe they may have been a victim of a hate crime are encouraged to contact the FBI’s San Francisco Division at (415) 553-7400 or https://tips.fbi.gov.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford sports fall from Division I to Division III.

The decision comes after the Hartford men’s basketball team won their first America East championship this season and played in the NCAA tournament for the first time, losing to eventual national champions Baylor in the first round.

The University of Maine also plays in America East.

Hartford President Gregory Woodward said the school is “moving to this new model for intercollegiate athletics”.

The discussion about the demotion to Division III has sparked marches on campus led by athletes and a petition from alumni to remain in Division I.

The Board of Regents said Thursday night’s vote came after a year of discussion. A consultant report released last month said the move could save the school more than $ 9 million a year.

The university announced that it would make a formal application to the NCAA for reclassification in January 2022. She plans to stop offering sports scholarships before the 2023-24 school year and hopes to complete the transition by September 1, 2025.

The school joined Division I of Division II in the mid-1980s. It is planned to comply with all current scholarships and coaching contracts.

“The University of Hartford owes so much to the generations of athletes and track and field staff who have contributed immeasurably to our community and are a source of pride for the university,” Woodward said in a statement. “As we migrate to this new model of intercollegiate athletics in the years to come, I am excited about the opportunities we will have to support the success of all of our students, including our student-athletes.”

TEXAS: Linebacker Jake Ehlinger, the younger brother of former Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger, was found dead near campus on Thursday, Austin police said.

The officers found the 20-year-old Ehlinger after answering a call at 12:18 p.m. Police did not disclose how they found him, but said the death is not considered suspicious. No cause of death was released immediately. Jake Ehlinger hasn’t played for the last two seasons after arriving in Austin as a walk-on from Westlake High School.

Sam Ehlinger was an election in the sixth round of the Indianapolis Colts’ NFL draft last week after a college career that included a leading player in Texas. When Sam Ehlinger was drafted, Jake’s face was accidentally shown on the NFL network instead of Sam. “Jake earned all the screen time you can get,” Sam joked with reporters.

Jake’s death is the second tragedy to hit the Ehlinger family. Ross Ehlinger, Sam and Jake’s father, died of an apparent heart attack in 2013 at the age of 46 while participating in a triathlon in San Francisco.

PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE: Kevin Kelley, the Arkansas High School football coach whose teams never sting and always stand on the side, will be the next head coach at Presbyterian College.

A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday evening that the school would sign a deal to hire Kelley. The person spoke on condition of anonymity as the school was not yet ready to make an official announcement. Kelley led the Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, using his analytical approach to football to nine state titles over 18 seasons. Kelley has gained national attention for his fourth loss strategy and has been sought after by coaches at all levels of football.

The Presbyterian of the pioneer leagues has an FCS season behind him 4-3 in the spring. Last month the school fired coach Tommy Spangler after 10 seasons playing 54-52.
