La Golondrina, a long-standing Mexican restaurant on Olvera Street, is engaged in a dispute with the city concerning plumbing problems, deferred rent, and eviction threats resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Questions around the restaurant’s future reopening persist, raising concerns among the current owners and the long-standing community who regard it in high esteem, according to LAist.

COVID-19 forced La Golondrina, founded in 1930, to shut its doors in March 2020. The Gomez family, who has deep roots on Olvera Street, took over the restaurant in 2021. Despite significant hindrances to reopening, including a $242,000 overdue rent bill issued by the city commission, the family matriarch Bertha Gomez remains hopeful, as reported to ABC7. Failure to settle the payment within a 30-day schedule threatens their lease agreement.

The restaurant, housed in an old 166-year-old building, is also dealing with complex plumbing complications—an ongoing crisis between the Gomez family and the City of Los Angeles. The question of who is ultimately responsible for the repairs is currently making its way through the legal system, as per ABC7 news. The delay in reopening, due to these unresolved matters, is starting to affect nearby businesses on Olvera Street, which are heavily dependent on the foot traffic the iconic restaurant brings.

After the Board of Commissioners of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument’s 30-day eviction notice, David Gomez indicated an intention to legally sue against the city, while also expressing hope for a resolution that would finally permit the reopening of the restaurant. Adjacent business owners, such as Mike Mariscal, assert the closure is not only hurting their businesses but also “silencing the street.”

A Bitter Slice: A Double Murder With Unanswered Questions…

The Enterprise and the South San Francisco Journal reported that around 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, a certain Todor Kiprof found two men – Peter Giorgi and Spiro Gioref – at the German and French Bakery on Grand Avenue near Linden Avenue shot and mortally wounded May 1908.

As is all too common, the cause of the crime, in this case a double homicide, was money.

The bakery had been there for a while but was sold to Giorgi at the beginning of April. Much of the money to open the bakery came from Kiprof, although there had been other investors. Kiprof was frustrated that no money was coming back to him and demanded a full settlement from Giorgi. Giorgi basically told him to walk away, probably because he’s only owned the bakery for a very short time. Kiprof then threatened in front of Gioref (the driver of the bakery’s delivery truck) to kill Giorgi. According to The Enterprise, Giorgi and Gioref “laughed at Kiprof and told him that the company lost money since (Giorgi) took it over”.

Kiprof got angry, pulled out an automatic pistol and started shooting at the two men.

The shots, amid a peaceful spring afternoon, quickly drew a crowd, and they found Giorgi still alive but “writhing on the ground.” The quickest route to a hospital was via the van owned by Charles Young, a plumber. Giorgi died in hospital later that night.

Gioref only appeared wounded when he was able to escape from the bakery and run down the street, calling for the police. He made it to a nearby post office before collapsing. He was taken to the same hospital and was lucid enough to testify to District Attorney JJ Bullock, who had been subpoenaed by the coroner. After issuing a full statement detailing the shooting, Gioref also died. Kiprof had walked down Grand Avenue, surrendered his gun, and quickly surrendered.

With eyewitness testimony very soon after the event and Gioref’s detailed testimony, I was surprised to find only a brief continuation in the September 12, 1908 Enterprise, which states: “The trial of Todor Kiprof, who is charged with the Murder of Spiro Giorgi in this city last May 11th is scheduled for next Tuesday in Redwood City. Kiprof was recently charged and acquitted in the murder of Peter Giorgi.”

Why Kiprof was acquitted in what appeared to be a fairly open case involving the murder of Giorgi is beyond me. And I could not find any information about the outcome of the Gioref trial. If one or more readers have more details on the outcome of this case and the fate of Kiprof, please leave them in the comments below!

There was an interesting side note to the whole story, however, and The Enterprise reported on a possibly unrelated murder: Stoyan Steff, one of the eyewitnesses to the aftermath of the shooting (and perhaps also an investor in the bakery), was stabbed to death in July 1908 . He should take a stand in Kiprof’s first trial. But Steff issued a deathbed statement saying he did not recognize his attacker.

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — After a three-night “sleep-in” inside San Francisco Unified School District offices, teachers demanding pay from the district said they reached an agreement with the district late Thursday.

On Monday, more than a dozen SFUSD educators began the sleep-in, calling for the district to pay more than 1,000 teachers and other staff members who have gone unpaid or only received partial paychecks since January.

READ MORE: 4-Alarm Fire Burns Vacant Commercial Building at Campbell

The educators have said because of the payment issue, they’ve been unable to pay rent, mortgages, medical bills, and other necessities.

District officials have said that while the majority of its more than 10,000 employees have been paid correctly, a portion of educators went unpaid due to a technical error attributed to the district switching to a new payroll system, replacing an older system that had been in place for the last 17 years.

Under the agreement, the district will pay all educators owed money, as well as interest for the late payments.

Additionally, the district has promised to address any payroll errors moving forward within 72 hours. Also, the district will reimburse the affected educators for any late fees and penalties incurred.

“This occupation was the result of months and months of trying to negotiate with the district and trying to ask that folks get paid what they’re due,” said teacher and United Educators of San Francisco member Frank Lara said during a Thursday evening rally outside the district offices.

“It’s been exhausting for all of us,” he said.

“I cannot thank enough the families and the community partners who’ve come out and offered us their food, their support,” UESF president Cassondra Curiel said. “Your help and support got management to make moves and we know we’re on the same page. Now there will be less stress and people will be paid for the jobs that they’re doing.”

“We remain committed to ensuring every staff member receives all of the pay they are owed,” SFUSD Superintendent Vincent Matthews said in a statement. “I want to again extend my deepest apologies to every employee who has been impacted in any way as a result of our transition to a new payroll system.”

According to the district, the new agreement also ensures that all employees will be able to input COVID-19 sick leave, including any sick leave that COVID-19-related that has already been taken. Additionally, the district is also offering 10 additional COVID-19 sick days of leave for employees.

UESF officials are expected to hold a rally to celebrate the agreement on Friday at 5 pm at the SFUSD parking lot, located at 555 Franklin St.

The payment issues come as the district is dealing with other financial woes — a $125 projected budget shortfall — and considering laying off hundreds of teachers and other staff to balance the budget.

Also, on Friday, district officials announced enrollment preparations for the upcoming school year. So far, 14,127 families have submitted enrollment applications, slightly up from last school year when 13,917 families submitted applications.
