“I wanted to make a mural in the corner of my bedroom,” she said. “And then I realized it doesn’t take 5 gallons to paint a few square feet. But I was stuck with $200 worth of paint. So I decided to just paint my whole damn house. I did a giant mural going down my entire hallway, down the stairwell, my cabinet and wall trim, my ceilings, I was just like, I’m getting rid of this paint. That quickly changed my house to be colorful and bright.”

“It was very much art therapy,” she said. “And it made me feel better. I had always wanted to make my space my own, but I just couldn’t. This was the first time where I was like, I have a canvas, I can do whatever I want!”

Slowly, she turned her home into a work of art. “When my friends saw my house, they told me to post it online, and I said, ‘This is crazy, I’m way too old for TikTok!’”

But during a slow period at work, she decided to try it. She cut two shots into a simple video, showcasing a bedroom window surrounded by a DIY greenery wall, and posted it to TikTok. Within one day, it had a million views.

The greenery wall that started it all, via her Instagram.

“It just went viral, my very first video!” she exclaimed. “I had no idea that was special! I didn’t really use TikTok. I just thought, this is so easy, anyone can do this!”

So she continued creating videos, documenting her painting, sharing renter-friendly decorating hacks, and making response videos to some of the crazier comments. “Boomers call it a tacky preschool aesthetic,” she said. “People think it’s young, but I just think it’s fun!”

She says she doesn’t read her comments anymore, since some are quite toxic, especially on TikTok. “I can’t believe people get upset about how other people decorate their homes. It’s not your home, chill out!”

In January 2023, she lost her full-time job, a casualty of the big tech layoffs at the time. But rather than look for another job, she decided to lean into content creation. She parlayed her internet fame into a new career as an interior decorator, taking on projects for open-minded clients that give her free creative rein, doing brand partnerships, and creating her own wallpaper designs.

Most San Francisco residents will never step foot in one of the city’s storied mansions. But once a year, a luxury home opens up to the public to view not only a stunning property but also what the rooms inside would look like with some of the Bay Area’s most celebrated interior designers at your fingertips.

This week marks the beginning of 2023’s San Francisco Decorator Showcase, an annual event benefiting the San Francisco University High School financial aid program. This year’s home is 625 El Camino Del Mar, a 1927 Spanish-style stunner located in the tony neighborhood of Sea Cliff.

For $45, visitors can tour the enclave through the end of May.

The 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom home has been decorated for the event with 28 design spaces, featuring a game room, a movie room and a wine cellar. There’s also an elevator in the house. The corner house was originally designed by architects Hyman and Appleton, and like most Sea Cliff homes, there are stunning views from most rooms of the more than 6,000-square-foot space.

This year feels celebratory, said showcase director of operations Jenny Bittner Borden, after a few rough years for the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020 and 2021, the selected home was only viewed virtually, while the organization skipped the event altogether in 2022.

Typically about 15,000 visitors tour the property, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process.

The Sea Cliff home had been on the market for a while when Borden approached the listing agent about making it into a Decorator Showcase house. She said transforming the property for the show has previously been a great way to market a house and do a lot of renovations in the process. When she got in touch, a buyer was already interested in the home and decided to purchase it with the contingency that the house be 2023’s selected showcase.

It’s a smart move on the buyer’s part, Borden said. The family will move into the home after the showcase is finished and get to keep much of the donated finishings and furnishings.
Once she noted the carved-wood door and arched stained glass window, Malone Detro knew the house’s one-time walk-in closet and mailroom had great potential. So she rounded up her family of tradespeople to assist in executing an escape—“somewhere you could go during a busy dinner party to catch a private moment,” she says. Her brother-in-law, a general contractor, stained and finished the cabinetry; her brother, who runs Potaito Fine Furniture, designed and built the sycamore bar stools; and her soon-to-retire carpenter father built the undulating walnut shelves. The Patagonia granite bar “[acts] as the glue between old and new,” Detro says. “The shelves lay directly in front of that window, breathing new life into the space and creating a function for it that was not there before.”

Transforming a large octagonal hallway into a multipurpose family room was certainly a challenge for DLC-ID, but owner and principal Jon de la Cruz maximized the shape by choosing “a calm, restrained color palette to further enhance the natural light and shadow,” he says. Pale, limewashed walls pull from the home’s neighboring terra-cotta roofs, while stone, gilded bronze, plush velvet, knotted wood, and lacquered parchment add rich layers. De la Cruz’s myriad custom furnishings mingle with a hand-knotted, Empire-style chandelier made in Mexico, Danish armchairs from the ’70s, and a Carrara marble dining table by Angelo Mangiarotti for Agapecasa.

Spanning a bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom, the primary suite aims to “strike a harmonious balance between light and dark, demure and bold,” says Tineke Triggs. As an ode to the vitality of gemstones, the bedroom unites a custom upholstered Una Malan bed, MJ Atelier wallpaper, and Marzio Cecchi lounge chairs with custom Tracy Glover Studio sconces, a rug designed by Triggs, and a decorative ceiling mural by Caroline Lizarraga. A mix of custom Go Build Studio vanities, stone slabs from Da Vinci marble, and Triggs’ own tiles in the bathroom “serve as the sultry counterpart to the bedroom,” she adds.

An 18th-century, Spanish-style abode—with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay—is home to the San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2023. The nearly 6,100-square-foot residence located at 625 El Camino Del Mar in the city’s posh Sea Cliff enclave is now open for tours (through May 29), with ticket sales once again supporting the San Francisco University High School Financial Aid Program.

Built in 1927 by the notable bank architects Hyman and Appleton, the home teems with compelling spaces. In all, 22 design studios reimagined the home’s three floors. What’s trending among them? Rounded edges, sophisticated plasterwork, contemporary artworks, and rich, hand-painted details.

“I love the relatability [the house] offers. It is not too big, yet [it] fits in everything a family would need,” says Jenny Bittner Borden, director of the showcase’s operations. And it’s just enough space for the region’s talents to explore what’s inspiring in this moment too. Below, step inside the San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2023, with 28 imaginative spaces that honor both the house’s Mediterranean architecture and arresting views of the San Francisco Bay.

Front garden by Martinelli Design

Visitors are greeted by a Mediterranean meets Californian aesthetic in the front garden, where Russell Martinelli plays with scale by using raised, oversized metal planters to draw the eye upwards. Then the details sink in: the fountain, the Shou Sugi Ban bench, the Star Power cushion fabric from Perennials—all of which reinterpret the black dress and white pearls that Audrey Hepburn dons in *Breakfast at Tiffany’s—*and the grand, wide staircase. Martinelli refinished it in a “textured Spanish star-and-cross pattern and painted the brick a softer taupe in lieu of the original exposed concrete aggregate and red brick,” he says, “which complements the fresh white and charcoal exterior paint.”

Rising from the foyer, over the winding concrete staircase and up to the atrium, is a tree that Geddes Ulinskas Architects built by hand alongside a half dozen craftspeople. “Each branch comprises eight sheets of medium-density fiberboard that were laminated, hand-bent together, fastened with epoxy and screws, sanded, finished, and hung. The lenses all had to be hand-templated and hand-cut to account for the imperfections of the human process,” says project designer Meredith Brown. Grounding the vestibule is a custom Stephen Antonson cocktail table and Natasha Baradaran poufs (both from De Sousa Hughes) atop a rug from The Rug Company.

Flanked by bronze Portal sconces by Konekt, the “giant carved wood mirror frame produced by Casey Johnson Studio is a mighty presence in the room,” says AubreyMaxwell cofounder Robbie McMillan. “It has a great connection to the misty landscape mural on the surrounding walls [courtesy of Phillip Jeffries] and brings the earthy quality of oiled oak into play. We used a bronze-colored mirror here in an organic shape that might be seen as a cave opening or a secret passage into a massive tree trunk.” Starring Explosion Blue quartzite that nods to the Pacific Ocean, the powder room is entirely “cloaked in soft green limewash that shimmers in the light and mimics the idea of mossy walls,” adds AubreyMaxwell cofounder Marcus Keller.

In traditional 18th- and 19th-century morning rooms, “the day’s first rays of light would fill the space, and the lady of the residence would prepare for her day,” says Geoffrey Coy, CEO and principal of Coy & Company. That uplifting, productive vibe comes easily in this modern-day study thanks to an alcove wrapped in Kelly Wearstler’s Mineral wallpaper, a Donghia-upholstered swivel chair, and a large work by Brooklyn artist Marc Lambrechts. The highlight, according to Coy? “Our custom oscillating ceiling detail inspired by millwork of the 1800s.”

For the living room, Kimberly Denman Rebuffel sought to create a chic European-style ambiance, one reminiscent of Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan. “This room is filled with pieces and furniture that are designed and produced with such skill and artistry,” says the designer. A Maya Romanoff wallpaper brings visual depth to the space, while other standouts include a McEwen Lighting Studio chandelier, Denman’s own limited cast-bronze Cerus armchair and Urn lamps, and a slew of contemporary artworks that “lead to continuous discovery for the inhabitants,” says studio partner Laurent Rebuffel.

The moody, artwork-filled Apollonia dining room takes its cues from surrealism, specifically Salvador Dalí’s 1934 painting Enigmatic Elements in a Landscape. That theme paves the way for such treasures as an expansive mural by Rafael Arana. The interior also features a custom tonal rug by Mark Nelson Designs, geometric patterned window coverings fabricated by Magnolia Lane, Edward Wormley dining chairs, and a lacquered table made with furniture designer Julian Giuntoli characterized by an eglomise inset.

Functional but elegant, the gourmet kitchen brings together natural materials such as rift white oak and honed Calacatta marble with Holly Hunt fabrics and local artwork. With the notion of mise en place top of mind, designer Lauren Berry prioritized organization in the space. Consider the sliding marble panels behind the range (which open to built-in shelving) or the tall black metal and glass-lit display cabinet. “I avoided the predictable island pendants, which can be obtrusive, and instead created a raised tray ceiling with cove lighting above the generous 10-foot-high ceiling,” she says, noting how it provides a “monolithic and uninterrupted focal point from dining and breakfast rooms.”

Sunroom by Dina Bandman Interiors

Dina Bandman designed this airy, sage-toned offshoot of the kitchen with convivial Mahjong games and decadent afternoon tea spreads in mind. Charles Leonard’s hand-painted geometric flooring and deGournay’s floral wallpaper set an elegant tone that is buoyed by furnishings from Hewn. The white plaster palm Paul Ferrante chandelier, the wire-brushed oak Marcali table, and the Marcali chairs upholstered in Holland & Sherry soft wool sateen are all tied together with Madina Aryeh’s custom window coverings.

The moment Miyuki Yamaguchi laid eyes on deGournay’s Wisteria wallpaper, it brought back memories of young adulthood, when she would chat with her next-door neighbor, the lauded linguist professor Murray Barnson Emeneau, about the wisteria that bloomed every spring. Building upon the elegance of that nostalgic wall covering, Yamaguchi’s guest bedroom incorporates a silk bed canopy and organza sheer curtain, John Dickinson’s African table from Sutherland Furniture, and a trifecta of pieces from Ironies, including the Prise table lamp. Its classic urn form makes “a statement in a modern way with a unique ‘worn’ marble texture,” says Yamaguchi.

Shapes and colors collide in this cheerful children’s bedroom featuring a custom bed informed by the 1980s’ Memphis movement. A Moustache desk chair and made-in-Oaxaca rug developed with Casa Muñiz Design further enliven the room. “Pierre Frey’s Arty pattern adds painterly strokes to the ceiling and window surfaces, creating a playful contrast to the rigid geometry of the bed,” says firm founder Eugenia Jesberg. The bathroom is just as bright with its papaya-hued wainscoting and confetti-like mosaic tile in various jewel tones from New Ravenna. “This random pattern reiterates our goal to foster positive feelings,” says design director Emma Jesberg.

A longtime fan of the butterfly-emblazoned Queen’s Flight wallpaper by Peg Norriss for Schumacher, Chantal Lamberto made the sand-hued version the starting point of her whimsical children’s bedroom. The space also features a refinished antique dresser, Hans Wegner Wishbone chair, and Annie Selke woven jute area rug. As a restrained juxtaposition, the bathroom’s hand-painted Porter Teleo wallpaper is paired with black-and-white striped stone wainscoting, and “the flooring is a prismatic black-and-white stone mosaic that adds a hint of whimsy,” Lamberto says.

To conjure a blissful state of relaxation in the bedroom, Marsh & Clark Design melded a floral installation with antiques and “a softly sloped headboard that curves around the bed and side table. It’s an asymmetric hug that envelops you in all senses,” says owner and principal designer Stephanie Fillbrandt. “The walls harken a feeling of gentle movement and the lighting [lofts above] in bird form.” It’s just as soothing in the bathroom with its Articolo pendant, micro-glass tile flooring, and textured plaster walls.

“I wanted to create a dreamy space that transported you out of a four-wall room and into a celestial experience while also designing a cozy space that you’d want to relax in,” says Noz Nazawa of her media room. Murals painted by decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga weave in gold constellations, ceiling fixtures resemble the Big Dipper, and a custom Marcali sofa (available at Hewn) recalls the Lobster Nebula, particularly since it’s placed on a black rug in the shape of the Scorpius constellation. With translucent racks backdropped by Lizarraga’s cobalt blue Venetian plaster walls, the wine cellar is just as trippy.

An acrylic swing set, petal-shaped wooden stools, and 3D sculptural trees turn this indoor playroom into a wonderland for children of all ages. Making the biggest splash is the full-scale mural of Christian Lacroix’s It’s Paradise wall covering. “We were sure to honor his whimsical theme throughout the room with the help of our custom and hand-sewn patterned kites from Tulu Textiles adorned with delicate fringes, beading, and intricate embroidery,” says principal designer Shelley Cahan. “Like Christian, I have always found myself drawn to deep saturation of color, pattern, and the unexpected.”

Office by Lizette Marie Interior Design

Acknowledging that the role of the home office is ever changing, designer Lizette Marie Bruckstein wanted this den to feel “as equally suited to Zoom calls with titans of industry as it is for evening cocktails or family game nights on the floor,” she says. Espresso-hued paneling, a matte black ceiling, and Dedar-upholstered vintage armchairs lend a glamorous sheen to the space, but it’s the custom Breccia Capraia marble–and–oak desk that truly shines. “The feat of creating a round base from a flat slab, infusing that base with strength and balance and then seamlessly attaching the solid oak top such that it could function structurally required quite a bit of engineering,” says the designer.

It’s a dog’s world—at least in designer Mini Gangwal’s laundry room. The Doggone Good wallpaper by Bridgett Stahlman for Spoonflower and bone-adorned wall rack play into the theme. A 2Modern stool, Crossville floor tiles, and LG washer and dryer outfit the rest of the hard-working space.

Tucked into the lower level, “we wanted to set this diminutive bathroom apart from the rest of the house,” says Ruben Marquez, who embraced a floating Kohler vanity and textured Arizona Tile on the walls to elicit a private members’ club atmosphere. “Instead of using tiles or a mosaic sheet, I customized the floor [using] quartz slabs, and created a rectilinear pattern that creates visual and architectural interest.” Another perk? Heated cables underfoot.

Gym by Kyle Hill Design

Mind, body, and spirit all get nurtured in Kyle Hill Design’s fitness room. Drawing from wellness centers around the world, it combines a Lululemon Studio mirror and custom Pilates reformer with bespoke furniture like a CB2 meditation chair and EQ3 workout table. But chestnut wood paneling and Kelly Wearstler lighting instill the high-tech space with a tranquil, balancing aura too.

Elevator by Elan Evans Decorative Finishes

One evening, Elan Evans drove up to her garden at “that moment just before the sunlight goes entirely and everything seems to be touched with little glints of gold,” she recalls. “It filled me with a sense of peace and renewal.” That serenity is what she wanted the elevator to convey, and she achieved it through colors like Benjamin Moore’s Amorous, a dusty purple, and a range of metallic paints from Modern Masters that she applied with a check roller. “I love how the Arteriors Izzy fixture stands in for the rising moon—and the seeded glass has a similar texture to the paint finishes.”

Today, following a three-year hiatus, the Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York is back—and this year’s 22 participating designers and architects have contrived five floors of compelling interiors that were well worth the wait.

Through June 6, the historic River Mansion, a beaux arts town house overlooking Riverside Park and the Hudson River on the Upper West Side, will be open to the public to tour some 10,000 square feet of newly reimagined interiors. Inside, design pros share the creative musings and experimental ideas exciting them right now—from a shell grotto-esque retreat to a rococo candyland. It’s all in an effort to raise funds for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club and its enrichment programs, for which the show house has raised more than $28 million to date.

The New Taste: Join AD Experts at the Kitchen Workshop

The Robert D. Kohn–designed River Mansion is no stranger to AD. The town house (lensed by Peter Vitale) was featured in the magazine’s November 1987 issue following a renovation by interior designer David Laurence that involved establishing the central staircase and opening walls to create more free-flowing rooms, among other modern upgrades. While the residence has evolved since glossing the pages of AD, there’s one point in the story that still holds true: “The house sits on what must be one of the most agreeable sites on the entire island…. Not twenty yards away, a leafy park flourishes from spring through fall,” wrote Michael M. Thomas. As of last week, the property is available for sale through Douglas Elliman, ready for its next chapter.

And a good-looking one at that. Below, see every room inside the 48th edition of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York (337 Riverside Drive at West 106th Street), made possible by 2023 sponsors Benjamin Moore, Calico Wallpaper, Cosentino, Dea Luxury Linens, Dedar, JennAir, Kohler, Kravet, Marc Phillips, Morgan Stanley, Morris & Co., New York Design Center, Peacock Alley, Sanderson, Soane Britain, Susan’s Jewelry, the Rug Company, and the Shade Store.

Landscaping by Janice Parker Landscape Architects

Not wanting to distract from the beaux arts mansion’s richly detailed redbrick and limestone façade, landscape architect Janice Parker prioritized symmetry in her plantings. Pleached Linden trees frame the entry, while ivy billows from angular concrete containers.

Foyer and Main Stair Hall by Yellow House Architects

Foyer and Main Stair Hall by Yellow House Architects

With Julia Marlowe—the early-1900s Shakespearean actress and the River Mansion’s first occupant—as their muse, Yellow House Architects indulged in grand and theatrical gestures in the home’s foyer. Let us count the ways: Warped glass paneling by Atelier Barrois and the sculptural chandelier by Nacho Carbonell rouse in the shadowy entry, while a squiggly-lined white plaster treatment offers a quiet contrast as it leads to the second floor of the home.

Parlor by David Scott Interiors

Parlor by David Scott Interiors

David Scott Interiors is known for eloquently assembling top-tier art and design within distinguished—though never dull—architecture, and the studio’s parlor is right on cue. Neutrally toned Pierre Frey fabrics lay a calming canvas for collectible design to shine, including the pièce de résistance: the Jean Marie Fiori–designed patinated bronze chimney, sourced through Twenty First Gallery.

Sitting room by Penny Drue Baird, Dessins LLC

Hushed in tone, designer Penny Drue Baird’s sitting room speaks volumes in tactility. That’s thanks in large part to the velvet wall covering—the Boudoir pattern by Elitis—whose linear forms reflect in the plush rug by Sacco Carpet. Apparatus fixtures finished in a brushed brass warm the interior, while antiques from Bernd Goeckler and Carlos de la Puente furnish the space.

Den by Halden Interiors

Den by Halden Interiors

Befitting for her nature inspirations, designer Kesha Franklin worked from the ground up in the “Heart of the Vine” den, custom designing an abstract leaf floor covering with the Rug Company. Its hunter green, chartreuse, and crisp white palette travels throughout the space, namely in the Shade Store window treatments, which feature Gaston y Daniela fabric by Kravet, and in the Murano glass Italian Lotus chandelier courtesy of Cosulich Interiors & Antiques.

Parlor by Ghislaine Viñas

Parlor by Ghislaine Viñas

Wanting to create space as intriguing as the Hudson River view beyond the parlor’s grand windows, designer Ghislaine Viñas called upon her network of artisans: Mark Mulroney crafted the felted murals that layer atop a custom wallpaper from Wolf Gordon, while curtain fabric by Dedar, lighting by RBW, a custom scalloped coffee table fabricated by Brooklyn Millwork, and various pieces from The Future Perfect enliven the interior.

Family room by Timothy Corrigan, Inc.

Family room by Timothy Corrigan, Inc.

No detail went unnoticed in the family room, where Timothy Corrigan began by defining the interior’s original millwork with tonal coats of green, namely Benjamin Moore’s Lily Pad and Stolen Moments. From there, the Spring Fever wallpaper by Timothy Corrigan for Fromental, with its Flemish-inspired botanicals hand-painted atop a perfectly sheened silver ground, established the dialogue for the rest of the interior—from insect-adorned pillow trim by Samuel and Sons to plaster leaf sculptures by Stephen Antonson and even the custom serpent medallion slithering from the David Duncan Studio chandelier.

Powder bath by Lindsey Coral Harper Interior Design

Powder bath by Lindsey Coral Harper Interior Design

In the second-floor powder bath, designer Lindsey Coral Harper pulled her warm color palette from the interior’s original stone flooring. Coastal inspirations were calling—perhaps, in part, due to her soon-to-open shop in seaside Stonington Borough, Connecticut—and the designer answered with works by fellow coastal creatives, namely a shell-covered stool by Quarto Design, rattan seating by Varnish Collective, and papier-mâché art from Palm Beach favorite Casa Gusto.

Staircase by Halden Interiors

Staircase by Halden Interiors

The custom rug continues up the third-floor staircase, which Franklin beautifully envelops in a hand-painted mural by artist Judith Sipos of Nono Art. The treatment plays off of the floral field in the background of a striking photograph by South African photographer Pieter Hugo, which almost becomes one with the room. Pendants by designer Feyza Kemahlioglu for Wexler Gallery flank the artwork.

Drawing room by Neal Beckstedt Studio

Drawing room by Neal Beckstedt Studio

Reimagining the home’s wine room into an artist’s studio, Neal Beckstedt “envisioned the glass-enclosed room as an architect’s private drawing room—a space for solitude and relaxation through creativity,” shares the designer. A custom stone patterned floor designed with Artistic Tile grounds the room’s hewed, timeworn demeanor. The nook comes complete with Swedish antiques from Deinst + Dotter and a fabric striped wall covering by Chelsea Textiles.

Library by JayJeffers, Inc.

Library by JayJeffers, Inc.

With studio locations in San Francisco and (as of recently) New York City, designer Jay Jeffers set out to create a culmination of the coastal cities within the library. Coating the walls—and the millwork, bookcases, and even some books too—in a two-tone treatment of rust brown and airy gray plaster paint establishes the sultry surrounding, while artisan works such as the commanding desk by Brooklyn sculptor Aaron Poritz, the desk chair by LA-based Cuff Studio, and the jute and wool rug by Mark Nelson Designs play up the bicoastal narrative.

“I wanted to create a pantry space that is beaming with warmth, wilderness, and a sense of wonder,” says designer Lillian Wu, who started by swathing the pantry in Calico’s Wanderlust wallpaper. In the catering kitchen, which is decked out with JennAir appliances, brass details from Rocky Mountain Hardware warms the organic blue cabinetry.

Lounge by Sawyer | Berson

An essence of “understated luxury” was top of mind for Sawyer | Berson when approaching the third floor’s main room, where a travertine stone fireplace by Lido Stone Works materially contrasts with suede-wrapped wall panels. “We designed the lounge as an elegant pass-through space reminiscent of a glamorous club room in New York City,” says Brian Sawyer. The branch-like bouquet, a paper sculpture made by Sourabh Gupta, mimics the tree-lined street on view through the round window frame.

Bedroom by Mary McDonald Inc

Bedroom by Mary McDonald Inc

For the past few years, says Mary McDonald, coquillage and “all things grotto” have been objects of her reverie. Now, those musings are full-on manifested in “Lady Borromeo’s Grotto,” her bedroom design that layers upon Schumacher’s boldly beautiful Shell Grotto wallpaper. Antique furnishings, saturated upholstery fabrics by Schumacher, and floor covering by Patterson Flynn play off the aquatic palette. “I love how the sconces and slipcovered wall chairs interplay with [the] intricate patterning of the faux shellwork,” adds McDonald.

The colorful cylinders of Avram Ruso Studio’s traveling chandelier seem to reflect like a disco ball onto the Pinnacle Fete Nero Marble tile from Artistic Tile in Design Studio 15’s chic bathroom. The fun continues in the adjoining closet thanks to a blue ombre runner from the Rug Company, crystal-encrusted lighting by Gaspare Asaro, and a custom Ornare closet, chicly adorned with brass trim.

Kitchen by Wesley Moon, Inc.

Wanting the kitchen to feel contemporary while also paying homage to the home’s Edwardian roots, Wesley Moon devised a custom plaster molding in collaboration with Hyde Park Mouldings to create an architectural foundation for the era-spanning heart of the home. He then worked with LaPolla Designs to create the cabinetry’s hand-applied decorative finish, coordinated to the Cosentino countertops and Ann Sacks backsplash. Apparatus lighting, JennAir appliances, and Kohler fixtures equip the space.

Adorned with passerine birds, the Pompeii wallpaper by Jennifer Shorty was the launch point for Fairfax Dorn Projects’ multitasking laundry room. A sisal carpet from Sacco Carpet, shelving accessories from Aero, window treatments by the Shade Store, and a JennAir washer and dryer round out the interior.

“I knew I wanted to create a clamshell bed, which has always been a dream of mine,” says Sasha Bikoff of her starting point for the primary bedroom. Fabricating a piece that mirrored her imagination? That posed a bit of a challenge. She eventually found her ideal material at fashion world go-to Mood Fabrics in New York’s Garment District and worked with John Pomp to fabricate the inflated bed frame, which shines fabulously against the reflective Cloud wallpaper by Calico, made “in custom rococo candyland colors,” shares Bikoff. A corner nook covered in a hot pink vegan fur rug from Stark (and inspired by the 1968 Bazaar sofa by Superstudio) makes for sultry seating. The carpet and chandelier are Bikoff’s own designs for Rug Art and Versace, respectively, and the bow and tasseled window treatments are fabricated by the Shade Store.

Bathroom and closet by Sergio Mercado Design

If ever there was furnishing or fixture to get across Sergio Mercado’s ethereal inspirations for the bathroom, it’d be Paris-based designer Céline Wright’s Nuage Hanging lighting. Hung in a trio, the paper chandeliers float like clouds over the Kohler tub. Tactile architectural elements backdrop the Silk Georgette stone countertop and mirror by Salvator. Plumbing fixtures by Kohler, and sheer window covering by the Shade Store.

Sitting room by Clinton Smith Studio

“It is a room for respite,” says designer Clinton Smith of the cozy, well-layered space on the show house’s top floor. Once used as a nursery, Smith transforms the intimate space into “the Hideaway,” a shimmering solace wrapped in a celestial Calico wallpaper and layered with cushions upholstered in a gilded mix of Zoffany, Harlequin, Morris & Co., and Sanderson textiles. Opposite the Oly daybed, a pair of Tavish etageres by Holland MacRae displays an array of books and storied artworks.

Bathroom by Ahmad AbouZanat | PROJECT AZ

Bathroom by Ahmad AbouZanat | PROJECT AZ

When designing the bathroom, Ahmad AbouZanat pulled from the historic home’s façade, color-matching the linear tile from Fireclay Tiles with the exterior’s dark-red brickwork and limestone trim. His favorite part of the Kohler-outfitted interior? “How the space celebrates that there is beauty in less; that a bathroom, a place where you start and end your day, doesn’t need to be overly ornate but rather a blend of simple, luxurious materials,” says AbouZanat.

Dressing room by Clive Lonstein Inc.

Dressing room by Clive Lonstein Inc.

When Clive Lonstein was assigned one of the home’s smaller bedrooms, it was only natural that the designer—who’s worked with Tiffany & Co. among other fashion behemoths—decided to reimagine the space into a dressing room. Among the many jewels featured within it is a full-length mirror by ceramic artist Peter Lane, reminiscent of a marquee mirror with its repeated orbs, as well as a sitting nook outfitted in Dedar’s Kiku fabric. Objects from Carpenters Workshop Gallery decorate the space, and an antiqued mirror trim creates a luxe border.

Dining room by Georgis & Mirgorodsky

“Our room is inspired by historic interiors of Cairo, Istanbul, and Damascus—places which enjoyed periods of cross-cultural pollination,” shares William T. Georgis of his and Ilya Mirgorodsky’s dining room and lounge. Thebes stools and custom poufs are available for those who don’t reserve a spot on the Georgis & Mirgorodsky-designed Bombola sofa (available through Maison Gerard), which has been upholstered in an acorn-brown shearling from Dualoy Leather.

This colorful bedroom for a teenage girl was designed by Eugenia and Emma Jesberg of EJ Interior Design in Tiburon for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase, which runs through May 29th.

The Seacliff neighborhood of San Francisco will host the 44th Decorator Showcase, which runs through May 29 and will feature 23 Bay Area design firms, including three talented ones from Marin.

The stylish transformations take place in a stately three-story Mediterranean-Spanish-style home built in 1927 and overlooking San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands.

Designers have reimagined 28 design rooms that include five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, a game room, a movie room, an elevator, a laundry room and more.

Marin’s participating design firms are Lauren Berry Interior Design and Shelley & Company Interior Design, both from Ross, and EJ Interior Design from Tiburon.

Cooking with sea salt

Lauren Berry (laurenberry.com) founded her interior design company more than 20 years ago and was a previous Showcase attendee.

In Showcase House 2019, she designed an en-suite espresso and cocktail bar, but this time she turned her attention to a larger space, the Sea Salt Kitchen. Her vision was to “create an open, gourmet family kitchen with off-the-shelf appliances that easily converts into a dramatic setting for breakfast and dining rooms,” she says.

Berry’s timeless color palette of warm whites, creams and soft grays was inspired by the California coast, she says.

A calacatta marble waterfall island anchors the elegant kitchen, whose form is referenced 10 feet above by a large LED-lit tray ceiling.

Marble also surrounds the large Hestan range, concealing the hood and sliding to conceal a pair of flat shelves that flank the range.

EJ Interior Design of Tiburon designed the ensuite bathroom in the Decorator Showcase.

Bespoke white oak cabinetry, wall panels and panels above the appliances give the marble a warm, tranquil backdrop.

A built-in sofa, complemented by Holly Hunt wall coverings and local artwork, is a comfortable spot to chat with the chef, check email, or watch the wall-mounted TV

Berry hopes visitors will notice Blisshaus’ “amazing plastic-free pantry organization system and eco-friendly Zip water filtration system that provides cold, hot and sparkling water on demand.”

Bubbling party

Eugenia and Emma Jesberg, the mother-daughter duo of EJ Interior Design (ejinteriordesign.com), a 30-year-old Tiburon-based company, took a vibrant, playful approach to a young girl’s en-suite bedroom, calling it ” Sadie’s Arty Party” and “Bubbly Bash”.

Although this is Eugenia Jesberg’s fourth Decorator Showcase over the years, it is Emma’s first and their first showcase room together.

“It was a lot of work and a lot of fun,” says Emma Jesberg. “Showcase is an opportunity to go big and bold and layer it, design for a dream client, discover new products and also highlight our favorite employees.”

Max’s Magical Playroom was designed by Shelley & Company Interior Design in Ross for the 44th Decorator Showcase.

The bedroom, bathed in wonderful natural light, is the fun setting for Sadie’s arty party, where the Jesbergs wanted a space that would encourage creativity and imagination to accommodate Sadie, their “client,” whom they describe as someone who is “the is party life, loves pink and has a strong imagination,” says Emma Jesberg.

Eugenia Jesberg agrees, and while it may have been designed for a young girl, “we think it may appeal to you whether you’re 6 years old or 66 years old.”

The focal point in the bedroom is a custom made statement bed inspired by the 1980s Memphis movement and designed by EJ Interiors using seven Pierre Frey cotton velvets.

The unexpected ceiling wall covering and window treatments, both in Pierre Frey’s Arty pattern, balance the bed “by creating a playful contrast to the bed’s soft geometry,” says Emma Jesberg.

A custom rug, a vintage desk, a pair of Gary Hutton cube-shaped side tables, artwork and a stuffed animal alpaca are among the curated accessories.

In the adjacent bathroom, designers created Bubbly Bash, where the walls are covered in custom-colored glass mosaic reminiscent of confetti. Floating countertops and shelves, colorful plumbing, and hanging orb lights continue the game’s theme.

“While our bedroom looks quite pink and colorful, the walls are white, further underscoring that this room is Sadie’s ‘blank canvas,'” says Eugenia Jesberg.

Magic playroom

The home’s water heater and wet room were given a major makeover when Shelley Cahan and Sarah Wilson of Shelley & Company Interior Design (shelleyandcompany.com) took over.

There was a water heater, a sink, a brick chimney, closets, washer and dryer hookups, concrete floors, and tons of plumbing and exposed piping, recalls Jenny Bittner Borden, operations manager for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase.

Lauren Berry of Lauren Berry Interior Design in Ross designed this kitchen for the 44th Decorator Showcase.

The design firm “expanded the playroom by tearing down the north wall and creating its own boiler room, leveling the floors and bringing a light and airy feel to the dark and cold space,” she adds. “I think it was very difficult for most to see the potential of this space and Shelley and his team took on that challenge and made it happen.”

Showcase Tips

“Marin readers will love the location,” Borden says, noting the property’s proximity to nearby beaches, the Legion of Honor, and interesting restaurants and bakeries. “Make it a day and have a fun adventure.”

Your insider tips? Look for the “little hidden gems throughout the house, including hidden spice racks in the kitchen, an espresso bar in her office, a wet bar in his office, a backlit marble bar, and a wine cellar.”

She welcomes those who visit the Showcase on Friday nights to enjoy complimentary white wine and al fresco snacks during “Friday Nights at Showcase” from 5-7 p.m
