CModel Data Inc., whose proprietary software helps companies operate more efficiently, is moving its headquarters from San Francisco to Birmingham, where the company plans to create 80 new jobs as it expands its operations, Alabama Secretary of Commerce Ellen McNair announced today.

The technology startup has developed its AI-powered Cora program to provide corporate decision makers with insights and recommendations that enable them to develop and implement successful growth strategies.

According to CModel, Cora acts as a decision support engine that aggregates a company's key business data and uses machine learning to analyze metrics, assumptions, and industry benchmarks to provide curated, expert-driven recommendations.

“The innovators behind CModel Data have developed a software platform that enables business leaders to break through the static and gain the insights they need to grow their companies,” said McNair.

“This promising company is another great addition to Birmingham’s growing tech startup scene.”

CModel was co-founded by Teasha Cable, Dr. Russ Muzzolini, and Jazmine Cable-Whitehurst in San Francisco. The company participated in Amazon Web Services' first Impact Accelerator in 2022 and the Build in Tulsa Accelerator in 2023.

Thanks to an investment from an Alabama-focused venture capital fund and broad support for its growth project, CModel is moving its headquarters from San Francisco to Innovation Depot in Birmingham, one of the Southeast's leading incubators for technology-focused startups.

“With the support of Alabama's targeted venture capital fund and the enthusiastic support of Birmingham's innovation ecosystem, we are excited to establish our headquarters at the respected Innovation Depot,” said Cable. “Moving to Birmingham aligns with our vision to make a meaningful impact and contribute to the thriving tech community here.”

“We want to further expand our commitment to growth, create new jobs and promote economic development in the region,” she said.

Growth plans

According to the Alabama Department of Commerce, the company chose the Magic City in Alabama rather than its hometown in California or other cities.

The Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA) estimates that the economic impact of CModel's growth plans in Alabama will be $4.1 million over a 20-year period.

In addition to the Department of Commerce and BBA, AIDT, Alabama's premier workforce development agency, also supports the project and provides services to CModel.

The project is also supported by the City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, Birmingham Bound, an initiative to promote the growth of the city's technology ecosystem, and the Alabama Futures Fund (AFF), a seed-stage venture capital fund focused on promoting and expanding entrepreneurial activity and economic development in the state.

Matt Hottle, partner at Redhawk Advisory and investment manager at AFF, said CModel is a startup that can “make a real difference” for its clients. AFF had previously announced it had invested in the company.

“Augmented intelligence platforms like CORA are typically financially prohibitive for mid-sized companies,” Hottle said in a statement. “Combining the latest AI and machine learning technology with model simulations to help companies make better decisions faster is a game changer.”

Local impacts

Officials in Jefferson County are optimistic about CModel's growth potential among Birmingham's growing list of technology startups.

“We are thrilled that CModel is making Birmingham its home,” said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. “They join a growing list of companies in our city's emerging technology hub where world-changing innovations are being created. The creation of 80 jobs is a huge win for us.”

“I am grateful that CModel recognizes the value of investing in Birmingham. We welcome them to their new home and look forward to pursuing their vision to improve business efficiency.”

With the strong growth of homegrown technology companies in Birmingham, Jefferson County Commissioner Mike Bolin said the region's efforts to attract new technology-focused companies and talent are bearing fruit.

“CModel Data Inc. will be a wonderful addition to this community with its AI-powered decision intelligence engine,” said Bolin. “The 80 new jobs this company will bring to our area will provide excellent opportunities for a number of local families, and Jefferson County looks forward to working with CModel as they move to Jefferson County.”

BBA President and CEO Steve Ammons said the announcement of CModel's move underscores the organization's commitment to growing the tech scene in the greater Birmingham area.

“This innovative company will not only create 80 new jobs, but will also enrich our ecosystem with its cutting-edge technology,” said Ammons. “We are excited to welcome CModel to the Greater Birmingham region and support them on their journey to significantly increase business efficiency and economic development.”

People gather to see the main stage at the Night Market in the Sunset District of San Francisco on Sept. 15. New data suggests the city’s population has grown over the past few years.

Felix Uribe/Special to the Chronicle

The city’s population began growing again in 2021 after plunging at the onset of the pandemic, a year earlier than previously thought, according to California Department of Finance data released Tuesday.

Article continues below this ad

The city gained about 1,400 people between July 2021 and July 2022, according to a revised estimate. A previous Department of Finance report estimated a loss of around 4,400 people during that period. The revisions incorporate migration data from the Internal Revenue Service and 2020 census data.

Gains were stronger in the following 12 months: The city grew by about 4,900 people to a total of a little over 848,000 residents, a positive sign that it remains appealing in the age of remote work and despite persistently high housing costs. San Francisco’s 0.6% gain was the fourth-highest percentage increase among California counties, behind the three rural counties of Yuba, Madera and Mono.

The city’s return to growth could boost its economy as it grapples with a budget crisis and stave off fears of a “doom loop.” Population swings have been driven mostly by people moving out or in, rather than births and deaths. By voting with their feet, many departing residents told the Chronicle that the city was no longer worth it.

They flocked to destinations such as Texas and Washington state during the pandemic. But the more recent gains show that San Francisco is drawing in more people than it is losing, though it remains roughly 22,000 people smaller than it was in mid-2020.

Article continues below this ad

Between July 2022 and July 2023, the city saw a net gain of 4,682 people through domestic and international migration, the highest growth among California counties from those two sources. Notably, net domestic migration accounted for a gain of 1,070 people, up from a loss of nearly 3,000 people in the prior 12 months.

Between July 2020 and July 2021, San Francisco lost a staggering 29,013 people, or 3.3%, almost all due to net out-migration amid stringent health restrictions. (The U.S. Census Bureau, which uses a different methodology, said the population loss was 6.3% during that time, the biggest percentage drop of any major American city.)

Three of the Bay Area’s most populous counties also saw gains. Santa Clara County grew by about 8,500 people, or 0.5%, between July 2022 and July 2023. San Mateo County grew by 2,800 people, or 0.4%, and Alameda County increased by a little over 6,000 people, or 0.4%. The other five Bay Area counties lost population, with Napa County seeing the biggest percentage decline of 0.8%, or about 1,000 people.

The population of Los Angeles County, home to over 9.8 million people, or a quarter of the state’s residents, fell by about 15,000 people, or 0.15%.

Article continues below this ad

California’s total population fell by only 0.1%, a loss of 37,200 people, in the same period, thanks to fewer deaths and an immigration rebound compared with the prior year. The loss was far narrower than the 0.75% drop between July 2020 and July 2021, a net loss of 295,000 people.

The state lost a net 260,400 people to domestic out-migration. The Department of Finance noted that net domestic migration has been negative for almost 20 years, leaving the state dependent on births and international immigration to make up the loss.

The state gained 107,300 people from natural increase — births minus deaths — plus a net 115,900 people from international migration.

<img decoding="async" title="Article Image" alt="San Francisco population loss was a common subject during the early part of the pandemic.
San Francisco population loss was a common subject during the early part of the pandemic. But new data suggests people were moving into the city sooner than previously thought.

Stephen Lam/The Chronicle

Only 16 of California’s 58 counties grew, with four Bay Area counties seeing some of the biggest gains.

Article continues below this ad

Separately, the U.S. Census Bureau said on Tuesday that California lost over 75,000 people between July 2022 and 2023, using different methodology. In contrast, 42 of 50 states gained population. County-level census data will be released in March.

The U.S. population grew by 1.6 million, or 0.5%, as the country recovered from the pandemic during that time. A striking 87% of the country’s population growth happened in the south.

The Department of Finance previously told the Chronicle that the Census Bureau’s 2022 estimates, which showed a lower San Francisco population, were likely more accurate than its own. But this year, the department’s figures are probably stronger, said Department of Finance chief demographer Walter Schwarm, since they account better for in-migration.

State data comes from driver’s licenses, birth and death certificates, address changes, tax returns, health care programs, elementary school enrollment, immigration reports and group quarters population data.

RudderStack Profiles enables companies to unify first-party data from every customer touchpoint into complete profiles, build ML user features, and deliver powerful customer experiences

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — RudderStack, the leading warehouse native customer data platform, today announced the release of RudderStack Profiles for AWS Redshift customers. RudderStack Profiles enables data teams to quickly build complete customer profiles in their warehouse, generate user features, and activate them to deliver powerful customer experiences.

RudderStack is the Warehouse Native CDP (PRNewsfoto/RudderStack)

Data teams are often overwhelmed by the complexity of collecting and unifying clean, first-party customer data to create a customer 360 and drive valuable use cases for every business team. The process can take months or even years and cost millions of dollars. RudderStack Profiles solves this problem by providing tools for data teams that automate the SQL grunt work and automatically build a full customer 360 table natively in AWS Redshift.

With RudderStack Profiles, data teams can reduce engineering costs and reallocate their most valuable resources to focus on delivering customer data use cases, not plumbing or cleaning data. They can also improve time to value for critical projects by building on a complete view of their customer in their warehouse. Plus, they can say goodbye to inflexible black box SaaS and configure RudderStack models that generate a customer profile table in their warehouse.

StatPearls, a leading professional healthcare education and technology company, eliminated data silos and disparate schemas by using RudderStack Profiles to build a warehouse native CDP on Amazon Redshift. Now they’re able to use granular user-level data to understand attribution, accurately calculate LTV, and increase return on ad spend (ROAS). Since implementing RudderStack Profiles, StatPearls increased customer retention by 1.7x and nearly quadrupled ad spend while maintaining positive ROAS.

Story continues

“Data from RudderStack helped our team turn marketing into a math problem,” said Mike Sperduti, Head of Engineering at StatPearls. “We know that when we spend X on a particular campaign, we are going to get Y yield over time.”

Unlike traditional Customer Data Platforms (CDP), RudderStack’s Warehouse Native CDP does not persist data and is built on top of your warehouse or data lake. With the introduction of Profiles, RudderStack now has a complete platform across each step of the Data Activation Lifecycle:

Collection: RudderStack’s Event Stream and Cloud Extract ETL pipelines make it easy to collect data from every website, app, or SaaS tool.

Unification: RudderStack’s Profiles feature leverages our standardized schemas to significantly reduce the time it takes to build a complete view of the customer, including an identity graph and rich customer features.

Activation: RudderStack’s Reverse ETL pipeline, real-time Profiles API, and 200+ integrations deliver complete customer profiles and user features to downstream destinations to trigger marketing automation, drive real-time analytics, or deliver personalized experiences.

“We’re excited to bring RudderStack Profiles to AWS Redshift. When Redshift users combine Profiles with our data collection and activation features, they can start driving better business outcomes with their customer data faster,” said Soumyadeb Mitra, Founder and CEO of RudderStack. “Profiles enables data teams to take full advantage of Amazon Redshift’s secure, reliable, easily scalable data warehouse while harnessing the power and flexibility of RudderStack’s Warehouse Native Customer Data Platform to deliver revenue growth and reduce cost.”

RudderStack and AWS are excited to see the success that customers have already achieved with RudderStack Profiles and look forward to helping more customers drive better business outcomes with their customer data.

RudderStack Profiles is now available to Enterprise Tier RudderStack customers on AWS Redshift. To learn more, read the blog post or schedule a demo with the RudderStack team.

This week’s list of top data news highlights covers November 11, 2023 to November 17, 2023 and includes articles on trying on high fashion in augmented reality and training AI systems to classify bird sounds.

1. Forecasting the Weather
Google DeepMind has created an AI system that can create weather forecasts faster, more accurately, and with less computing resources than current models. The team trained the system on nearly 40 years worth of historical weather data.

2. Editing Genes
Researchers at Verve Therapeutics, a U.S.-based biotechnology company, have created a gene-editing treatment for cholesterol. It uses CRISPR editing techniques to disable certain liver gene cells which will help lower bad cholesterol.

3. Packing Online Orders
Amazon has unveiled a robot that can identify the shape of online orders and pack them in an appropriately-sized box. By using the robot, the company can prepare orders for shipment more efficiently and reduce unnecessary packaging materials.

4. Enhancing Work Meetings
Microsoft has updated its Teams application to include two new AI-powered features, including one that can remove clutter from users’ video backgrounds or generate decorations for them, and another that can isolate users’ voices from background noise during calls.

5. Inspecting Plumbing
The Louisville Water Company is using two robots to inspect large underground water pipes in Louisville, Kentucky. The first robot uses a camera and ultrasonic sensors to determine the conditions of pipes and pinpoint potential repairs while the second uses acoustic sensors to identify leaks or air pockets.

6. Composing Music
Google DeepMind has partnered with YouTube to launch a generative AI system for creating music. They have also developed two new tools built on Lyria, including one that can create music in the style of select popular artists for YouTube Shorts and another that can generate instrumental music from a hummed tune, simple keyboard tune, or another vocal line.

7. Editing Videos
Meta has launched two new AI-powered video editing tools. The first can generate four-second videos from a caption or photo and the second can edit videos according to users’ text prompts.

8. Filtering Sounds
Adobe is developing a tool that uses an AI system to separate sounds in an audio recording. Users can upload a recording and select sounds to filter out or edit, such as applause, speech, traffic, and more.

9. Classifying Birds
Researchers at the University of Moncton in Canada have created an AI system that can generate realistic bird songs to train future AI systems to recognize bird songs in the wild. The team used over 23,000 recordings of 264 bird species around the world. In tests, the team found that adding generated bird songs to AI systems for bird identification improved classification by 12 percent.

10. Exploring High Fashion
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has partnered with Snapchat to add mirrors at the de Young Museum. Visitors can use the mirrors to virtually try on three evening outfits from the museum’s high fashion exhibit in augmented reality.

A data tech company formerly based in San Francisco is moving its headquarters to Birmingham after an investment from the Alabama Futures Fund.

CModel Data Inc. is developing a data modeling and business intelligence tool which uses artificial intelligence, along with data, in generating business strategy simulations. The CModel platform helps business managers game out what’s needed to achieve specific business outcomes.

The amount of the investment was not disclosed. Founded in 2018, the Alabama Futures Fund, or AFF, offers seed-stage investment funding to companies in-state or willing to relocate here. CModel is the AFF’s 19th investment since 2018.

Redhawk Advisory serves as the investment manager of AFF. CModel was recruited to Birmingham through the combined efforts of AFF and Birmingham Bound.

According to CEO Teasha Cable, relocating to Birmingham is a unique opportunity for CModel.

“Relocating our company to Alabama marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. With our recent investment from AFF and the support of Redhawk Advisory as a trusted partner, we are poised to unlock unprecedented growth and innovation,” Cable said. “Birmingham’s vibrant startup environment and Alabama’s strategic location are the perfect ingredients for our company’s success. We look forward to creating a brighter future, both for our business and the local community.”

CModel has developed a cloud-based software platform named “CORA,” which uses historical client-generated data, generative AI and input from human experts, along with curated data provided by business management experts.

CORA asks users a series of questions – beginning with generalized, high-level questions, before heading into more granular inquiries. Based on the answers, CORA will then run simulations to illustrate what business conditions are needed to achieve the user’s desired outcomes.

“CModel represents a startup that will truly move the needle for its customers,” Redhawk Partner Matt Hottle said. “Augmented Intelligence platforms like CORA are, usually, financially unattainable for mid-market businesses. Combining the latest AI and machine learning technology with modeling simulations that will help businesses make better decisions, faster, is a game-changer.”

When ThingLogix started in 2014, the solution provider spent a significant amount of time building the plumbing and infrastructure for every IoT project that came its way.

It didn’t take long until the San Francisco-based company, an advanced technology partner for Amazon Web Services, realized that it was “building the same thing for everybody,” according to Jason Burch, vice president of business development and strategic partnerships at ThingLogix.

[Related: 2023 Internet Of Things 50: A Growth Engine For The Channel]

So the solution provider took the foundational software and services it built from the ground up for every IoT project and rolled them up into a serverless framework called ThingLogix Foundry, which enables the company to develop and deliver solutions faster with lower up-front costs.

“It helps us accelerate development and delivery. The Amazon reps love it too,” Burch said.

ThingLogix is among the 26 solution providers recognized this year as CRN’s IoT Innovators, which are building innovative applications by partnering with cutting-edge vendors in a market where businesses are expected to spend $805.7 billion on IoT projects in 2023, according to research firm IDC.

By offering ThingLogix Foundry as the foundation for IoT projects, the solution provider has had an easier time scoring customer deals, and it has also given the company more time to offer services that provide unique value, whether it’s developing applications or baking intelligence into solutions.

“It’s helped our customers in terms of spend, which makes it an easier sale because they don’t have to write a million-dollar check on the front end,” said Burch.

“At the end of the day, I think this is a better way to do it,” he added.

What follows are the 26 value-added resellers, systems integrators and managed services providers recognized in CRN’s 2023 IoT Innovators. With headquarters ranging from California and Pennsylvania to Ontario and Florida, these companies are focused on an assortment of opportunities in the IoT space, whether it’s protecting industrial systems from cyberattacks, integrating AI-powered surveillance systems or using machine learning models to improve mining and manufacturing operations.
