The 49ers are looking for a new quarterback, and one of the options they considered was trading with Sam Darnold.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, San Francisco had “some internal discussion” about Darnold before deciding to trade transport to the Dolphins to move up nine spots on the NFL Draft from # 12 to # 3. It’s unclear how much you actually thought about trading for the Jets quarterback – or how much they would have offered – but at least they were interested. The 49ers also found that the Jets weren’t ready to get off the # 2 overall pick, despite never actually asking for the pick prior to the Dolphins trade.

It makes sense that the 49ers are connected to the Jets via Darnold. The 49ers clearly want to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo and have a relationship with the Jets after Robert Saleh moved to New York. This report also shows that the Jets will shop Darnold and will definitely draw a quarterback with their choice. We’ll have to wait until the late April draft to see if it’s true, and it’s unclear when or if Darnold will be traded, especially after another report stated that the Jets could keep Darnold regardless of who choose them.

Sounds like we could get another team out of the Sam Darnold competition.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network doesn’t expect the San Francisco 49ers to push the Jets quarterback trade.

“The answer I got to Sam Darnold’s situation is that I don’t expect the 49ers to be there,” Rapoport said on the Murph and Mac Podcast. “Maybe that could change. I think theoretically anything is possible. I never rule out anything in this ridiculous, stupid world. I don’t expect the 49ers to be there based on what I currently know.”

Rapoport went on to ask two valid questions. First, is Darnold better than 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo? Second, would San Francisco want to make a deal for basically the same quarterback?

What he means is that these two signal callers have shown lightning bolts but are not proven to be franchise quarterbacks at that level. Garoppolo is older and costs more money, which would be a reason to grab Darnold instead, but from what the insider hears, San Francisco isn’t interested in switching from Garoppolo to get ahead with Darnold.

Since the free hand is emerging, we know that Almost a third of the NFL’s 32 teams have reached out to the Jets inquiring about Darnold’s availability.

It is very likely that the 49ers are one of those teams. In fact, it would at least make sense for them to report to New York. That is, and while things may change, it seems like Kyle Shanahan’s squad are looking in a different direction.

Rumors about the availability of Sam Darnold in the trading market are getting louder as the new league year and the NFL draft approaches. The 49ers were tied to a potential Darnold deal in various hypothetical deals, but nothing material was reported about San Francisco’s interest in the quarterback.

If they thought about such a move, it wouldn’t be cheap.

NBC Sports’ Peter King wrote in his Football Morning in America column that there was league interest in Darnold, which would cost at least a high second-round selection.

From the king:

No team in the next 14 months has a better design situation than the Jets. They currently own a decent piece of quarterback property in Sam Darnold. He’s worth at least a good second round pick on this draft – 39th overall to Carolina, maybe 40th to Denver, or 43rd to San Francisco. (The 49ers are my personal favorite.)

The 49ers make sense as a landing site for Darnold, as much of the former number 3’s three years’ fighting with the jets may be due to organizational errors in his environment. San Francisco has an infrastructure as well as head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offensive program that would potentially lead Darnold to a higher level of play than he has achieved so far in his career.

On the flip side, a second round move means for him that the team would likely aim for him to start this season as he is in the final year of his rookie deal. Using a second round pick for a backup that could stay in the free agency for the following year is likely not a prudent use of a premium pick for a team with as many holes as the 49ers.

We theorized that the club could make a mid-round selection for Darnold to bring him into the building as a backup and see what he could do in practice before offering an extension in the off-season . It would be worth a mid-round selection to see what Darnold looks like in Shanahan’s offense. A selection in the second round carries a much higher risk.

Ultimately, the 49ers will need to identify a player who can be their long-term answer if Garoppolo doesn’t step up his game or doesn’t stay healthy in 2021. If Darnold is that player, it makes sense to get him – also vote for a second round. However, if there are questions about him, the choice would be a better fit for a rookie without a track record of 38 NFL starts.
