The world of Mary Poppins was practically perfect in every way – but behind-the-scenes there have been a number of devastating tragedies.

On-screen we were transported into a magical all-singing, all-dancing world with the much-loved British nanny and a various quirky characters.

But behind the innocent adventures of the 1964 classic, the cast were enduring personal struggles and health battles.

None more so than legendary actor Dick Van Dyke, who is thankfully still going strong at the age of 97-years-old and was recently unveiled as the Gnome on The Masked Singer.

From heartache to a suicidal battle with alcohol and a heartbreaking death, here’s a look back at the tragedies that befell the Mary Poppins cast.

Dick Van Dyke – Bert

Everyone loved cheery chimney sweep Bert(Image: Rex)

Played by Van Dyke, Bert was the one-man band, chimney sweep and kite seller with a terrible Cockney accent and a massive crush on Mary.

But during their days on set, Dick was hiding a dark secret – he was in the grips of alcoholism.

He was so desperate to get sober that he entered rehab twice, and when that failed he fell into a suicidal depression.

“We moved to a neighbourhood full of young families with the same age kids and everyone drank heavily, there were big parties every night. I would go to work with terrible hangovers which if you’re dancing is really hard,” he told the Telegraph.

“I was in deep trouble, you get suicidal and think you just can’t go on. I had suicidal feelings, it was just terrible.

“But then suddenly, like a blessing, the drink started not to taste good. I would feel a little dizzy and a little nauseous and I wasn’t getting the click. Today I wouldn’t want a drink for anything.”

After finally winning his 25-year battle, he returned to screens with Diagnosis Murder in 1993.

Dick Van Dyke was unveiled as the Gnome(Image: FOX)

Dick was unmasked as the Gnome of the American version of The Masked Singer this week – after reducing judge Nicole Scherzinger to tears.

He belted out a powerful rendition of When You’re Smiling by Frank Sinatra, then treated the audience to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins.

Nicole then gushed over the Mary Poppins icon as she broke down in tears.

“It was really dark in there. I couldn’t see anything,” Dick joked when asked how he found performing in the Gnome outfit.

“I love you so much, we love you, the whole world loves you so much. It’s an honour to have you on our show.

“I can’t believe you’re here, I’m trying to like play it cool. You look so gorgeous, you look so handsome,” she said.

Julie Andrews – Mary Poppins

Julie Andrews was apparently the opposite of her goodie-goodie character(Image: Sportsphoto Ltd./Allstar)

Julie played the practically perfect Mary Poppins, but it was a different story off-camera.

Karen Dotrice, who played her young charge Jane Banks, said the Oscar winner was a foul-mouthed chain smoker behind-the-scenes.

“There was swearing. Julie Andrews was smoking on set. It was a very real 1960s set, I can tell you. They were polite around minors to begin with, but that soon ended,” she told The Sun.

Julie went on to win an Academy Award for her role before being cruelly robbed of the singing voice that had made her a star in a botched operation.

In 1997, she underwent surgery to remove noncancerous nodules from her vocal chords, but when she woke up her ability to sing had gone.

“If it had happened earlier, it would have been really devastating. As it was, it was devastating,” she told People magazine. “For a while, I was in total denial… I thought at the time, my voice was what I am.”

She later sued the two doctors and her case was settled for an undisclosed amount in 2000.

Matthew Garber – Michael Banks

Matthew Garber retired from acting soon after Mary Poppins(Image: Supplied by LMK)

Brit star Matthew played Michael Banks in the 1964 film Mary Poppins – but retired from acting aged 10.

He unknowingly contracted hepatitis while in India in 1976, but by the time his dad managed to get him home in 1977, it had already spread to his pancreas.

Sadly, Matthew died from haemorrhagic necrotising pancreatitis at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London at the age of just 21.

His brother Fergus, who was 13 when Matthew died, denied claims his brother contracted hepatitis by using drugs.

He said it had probably come from eating infected meat.

David Tomlinson – George Banks

David Tomlinson, pictured as Mr Banks, suffered a devastating personal loss(Image: Getty Images)

Tragically, David was widowed aged just 26 when his wife jumped from a hotel with her two sons, just weeks after they had got married.

Mary Lindsay Hiddingh’s first husband had been killed in action, leaving her to raise her two boys, Michael, eight, and John, six, alone.

Reportedly despondent over not being able to bring her children to the UK to be with David, Mary and the children plunged 15 floors on December 2, 1943, leaving him devastated.

He later married actress Audrey Freeman in May 1953 and they stayed together for 47 years until his death from a stroke aged 83.

The size was perfect. Such was the situation. The view from the back of the house and the terrace? Stunning open space with rolling green hills. The Del Sur house was exactly what this young French couple with two young boys could have hoped for – apart from the brown furnishings.

The floors were dark brown wood. So were all closets. The window coverings were also dark brown. And the tiles. And the countertops. Everything else was kept in beige tones.

The couple, who asked that their names not be used, left France for an adventure in California in 2011. He’s a software engineer, so they headed to San Francisco. She’s an event planner and has found work in the Bay Area. Ten years later his job took him to San Diego and by that time they had the two children. A 3 month old chocolate labrador recently joined the family.

The question the couple initially faced was whether to live on the coast, where the boys go to school, or inland, near the man’s office. After searching for homes, they found that they could get more bang for their buck inland and found a spacious, two story, 3,000 square foot home built in 2011 with four bedrooms and 4 ½ bathrooms.

The woman was drawn to the kitchen, large enough for cooking and entertaining. Husband loved the views of the hills beyond which also afforded privacy and the community’s many inviting paths for running and biking. It was just the right mood for both of them.

“When we visited the home, I thought I didn’t want to move,” the woman said. “But I felt so comfortable in this house and I could imagine living there.”

Even before it was renovated?

“My job is to be creative,” she explained. “You can visit an awful hotel and have a vision of turning the space into a spectacular event. So I’m used to seeing the potential.”

They bought the home in late 2021. The husband researched Yelp to find an interior designer and was impressed by the reviews for Blythe Interiors in San Diego. The couple hired the company, which assigned senior designer Janice Tran the project. The couple had discussed making some structural changes — like angling outdated hallway arches and removing bathroom walls that separated the main room from the toilet and shower — and found Tran, with her expertise in the area, to be a natural choice.

As Tran met the homeowners, she learned that their style is “young, fresh, clean lines, modern but homelike.” And with two young boys, everything in the house had to be “durable, easy to clean and easy to maintain.”

Tran said the couple “was a big part of the design process. We worked hard in the beginning to nail down their vision and once we got our concepts in place we started to choose the finishes for all the rooms.”

Tran selected and presented initial finishes such as tile and paint, and solicited feedback from the couple. Revisions would be made based on how they all envisioned each space and detail.

The couple moved into a rented apartment during the six-month renovation that began in January 2022. Tran said the scope of the project was to update all of the interior finishes and modernize the home as much as possible.

We ripped out all the floors and put in new (floors), ripped out the existing kitchen and installed new cabinets, counters, backsplashes, plumbing and appliances,” she said. “The arches in most areas of the house have been squared and opened up.”

Other elements of the project included rounding out the sweeping staircase on the ground floor, replacing the carpeting on the steps with white oak floors, and adding new iron handrails. All bathrooms have been refreshed with an overhaul of existing cabinetry and the addition of new countertops and accessories.

Originally, the couple wanted to create a French-style space by converting the ground floor’s spacious master bedroom with its stunning views into the dining room and using the smaller dining room area as a bedroom. That way, her guests would benefit from the view.

“In France, you put the bedroom where you don’t have a view, because we only go to sleep,” says the husband. “We don’t care about the view. We wanted the living room and dining room to have a view.”

But the cost of removing a structural wall in this area was prohibitive considering everything else was planned. Thus the bedroom retained the precious view, although the dining room is bright with natural light with an abundance of windows on two walls and overlooks a separate courtyard.

Dark hardwood floors gave way to French oak in a California Classics Bayonne finish. Gone is the beige wall color, replaced with a bright white, along with new baseboards and door panels. And Tran had numerous recessed lighting installed throughout the house.

In the great room, the wall has been updated with shelves, cabinets and a fireplace for a sleeker look. The original heavy hearth has been removed. The fireplace is now almost flush with the wall, surrounded by Arizona Tile’s Carbon Gray Satin Granite, with a slim piece of floating white oak as the mantel and a TV above.

The cabinets, shelves and interior have been stripped of the dark wood paneling. Now the two shelves in each recessed storage space, along with the closet doors, are a calming blue – Behr Ocean Swell Flat. For this room, as for the rest of the house, the couple brought their own furniture from their previous home.

The kitchen footprint remained the same, but the unsightly original island was lost. Instead, Tran designed a streamlined 172″ x 60″ work and dining area – with seating for up to 10 people on three sides – but packed with storage. To differentiate between the living room and the kitchen, the kitchen cabinets and adjoining butler’s pantry are finished in a darker blue. The island and countertops are Della Terra Quartz in Portofino by Arizona Tile. Tran had a Miele induction cooker and extractor hood installed in the counter opposite.

Behind those appliances and the glass-fronted kitchen cabinets is the wow factor of the space – a backsplash of white Hedron 4” x 5” 3D hexagonal tiles by Bedrosians. Another wow factor is a delightful Grohe Blue chilled and sparkling water filtration system supplied by Ferguson. The couple retained the previous owner’s dishwasher, refrigerator, and ovens.

The master bedroom features the couple’s original furniture and new carpet. They instead focused on creating a lighter, brighter, and more sophisticated bathroom. Like the rest of the house, the original closets had been dark and bulky. It also had an awkward lower vanity between the two sinks. Now the room is a clean black and white. The cabinets have been redesigned in white with matte black handles, and the vanity is gone. This wall and shower features a crisp white 16″ x 32″ Bedrosians tile reminiscent of the kitchen splashback. The flooring is 12″ x 24″ Chateau porcelain tile in a smoky slate-like finish, also by Bedrosians. Tran also used the tile in the shower niche.

At the opposite end of the bathroom, beneath a window overlooking the Del Sur open space, is a sexy 65-inch white Barclay Pilar bathtub with a floor-mounted Artos Opera bath filler.

Throughout the house, Tran focused on keeping the color palette in cool neutrals with lots of black detailing. And she found that most tile materials had a somewhat geometric shape with muted tones.

The family moved back into the home last summer and the couple are delighted with the updated design.

“It’s a very quiet house,” said the woman. “It’s quiet. It’s great to entertain people. You can have up to 12 kids running around, playing upstairs and having fun downstairs.”

San Francisco-based Rob Price has hiked in California’s Sierra Nevada many times while wildfire smoke was blown through the air.

But the thick, sooty air that choked Yosemite National Park on Saturday when he and his partner were backpacking was like nothing he had ever seen before.

“The sky turned the ugly color of a dark blotch, black and purple,” said Price. “It was raining ash. It felt completely apocalyptic.”

Price said when the smoke first swept into the park, the temperature dropped significantly.

“There were very gusty winds,” he said. “We only saw lightning strike, but heard a drumbeat from distant thunder.”

Apocalyptic skies – smoke, constantly falling ash, and a sickly orange sun – as we broke up on our hike and evacuated Wawona, Yosemite due to #CreekFire earlier this morning pic.twitter.com/N1Ywwakx3t

– Hannah Murphy (@MsHannahMurphy) September 7, 2020

Price’s story is just one of many reports that came from Yosemite on September 5th when angry wildfire sent clouds of smoke across the area about 40 miles south of the park.

“Apocalyptic skies – smoke, constantly falling ash and a sickly orange sun – when we stopped our hike today and evacuated Wawona, Yosemite because of the #CreekFire,” wrote one hiker on Twitter.

These reports symbolize a record-breaking wildfire season in California, in which more than 2 million acres have been burned since the beginning of the year. The fires have made outdoor recreation difficult in the state, known for its majestic mountains and emerald lakes, in a month when residents typically enjoy being outdoors. As of Tuesday, 22 California State Parks were completely closed and five partially closed due to forest fires. Yosemite National Park is open, but the southern part is under fire due to the creek fire.

The Creek Fire ignited Friday night in the Sierra National Forest near the Big Creek and Huntington Lake communities and raged on Saturday afternoon. It was moving so fast that campers were trapped around Mammoth Pool Campground and needed helicopter rescue.

The intense heat in the powerful updraft created an ominous cloud of smoke and ash known as the pyrocumulonimbus cloud.

“There was a much smaller fire on the Yosemite Park border, but it’s less than 1,000 ares,” said Daniel Harty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Hanford. “That probably made a little smoke, but the smoke from Creek Far stretched all the way into Yosemite.”

UPDATE: @NOAAs # GOES17

Measurements from NOAA satellite imagery revealed that the cloud of fire was reached at an altitude of more than 45,000 feet. Dr. Colin Seftor, an atmospheric researcher at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, told NASA the cloud of fire was possibly the largest ever observed. The cloud reached more than 45,000 feet.

NASA calls pyrocumulonimbus “the fire-breathing dragon of the clouds” because they “direct their smoke like a chimney into the stratosphere of the earth”. These clouds often create their own weather and generate rain, hail and thunderstorms.

Harty said Saturday was too dry for the cloud of fire to produce rain, but there were reports of thunder and lightning.

Incredible #PyroCB (Pyrocumulonimbus) cloud created by the intense heat of the #CreekFire in California. The peaks occasionally reached heights of eight to nine miles, with updrafts strong enough to force overshoot peaks into the stratosphere. https://t.co/RPx0k8UTRP

– NWS Portland (@NWPortland) September 6, 2020

Price and his partner were on a two-day backpacking trip with a plan to hike 36 miles between Mono Meadows Trail Head and Red Peak. The trip was cut short when the smoke filled Yosemite. She and many others on the trail were confused and unsure where the wildfire that was creating the smoke was.

“One of the things we worried about was that the fire could have been between us and our car,” he said.

On Saturday at 3 p.m. they were at Upper Merced Lake packing up their gear. “The sky was so dark it was hard to see,” said Price, who is originally from the UK. “Ash swirled around the torch [flashlight]. It felt like the fire could have been just a few kilometers from us. “

They debated whether to wander deeper into Yosemite to escape the smoke or take the risk and get back to the car. Based on another hiker’s report that the road to Mono Meadows was open, they set out on their way back.

“It was pretty scary because we had this lack of information about where this fire was coming from and we didn’t know if we were going the right way or not,” he said. “The only alternative we had was to drive another 40 or 80 miles on the higher lake and risk the fire getting worse.”

After a 24 mile hike on Saturday, they arrived at Mono Meadows.

“The ashes burned our eyes, stuck to our skin and clothes,” he said. “I have never experienced something like that. Some of the pieces of ash ranged in size from tiny spots to the size of a fingernail.

He added, “There were several hours that were very stressful. In the end, the air didn’t feel safe to breathe, but we had to get out.”

The recent fake ad riot on Facebook has highlighted how unreliable social media reports can be. But a few years ago I learned this lesson firsthand – and in a very unexpected way.

My story actually starts back when I was in sixth grade and got the title role in my class production of Mary Poppins. It was the height of my elementary school career and seemed like a surefire sign that I was meant for the Broadway star. I beat out the lyrics for “Spoonful of Sugar” while dramatically pouring medicine onto a spoon. I smiled cautiously when the boy who played Bert serenaded me with “Jolly Holiday”. Our appearances were rewarded with seemingly endless standing ovations. Kindergarten children chased me for my autograph for weeks.

Unfortunately, my start was short-lived. A series of disappointing auditions in junior high productions convinced me that a career in front of the limelight was not in my future. But I still had Mary. I would always have Maria.

At least that’s what I thought.

A surprising revelation

Fast forward to Facebook FB Invention, -0.22% and the Rise of Throwback Thursday (#TBT) when everyone celebrates their past (or embarrasses their kids and friends) by posting pictures from the past. Long-neglected class pictures appeared weekly in my Facebook news feed. So I wasn’t too surprised on a Thursday afternoon when a Facebook friend and ex-classmate – we’ll call her Karen M. – posted a photo of herself as a birdwife from sixth grade Mary Poppins production.

What surprised me, however, was Sarah B’s comment: “I was a chimney sweep. Jennifer K. was Mary Poppins … oh how I remember it! ‘

My jaw dropped and my eyes almost fell out of my head as I saw the words on my computer screen. What? What? Jennifer K. wasn’t Mary Poppins! I was Mary Poppins!

I immediately went to correct the record, but my fingers caught on the keys. It seemed kind of pathetic jumping in so quickly and reminding others of my time in the spotlight. Better to let someone else do it, I thought. Surely some graduate of Miss Schmitt’s class would want to pay homage where it is due.

I’ve waited and updated the page. Nothing.

I went back to a work project, then came back and freshened up again. Now there were comments about how terribly cute Karen M. looked in her plaid fringed scarf. But what about Sarah B.’s statement? Not a word. Not then, and not when I checked 10 minutes later. Or half an hour later. Or the dozen or so extra times that I went back that evening. What happened?

Deleted from Facebook?

It is often said that browsing Facebook is the most humiliating experience and I can’t disagree with that anymore. Everyone on Facebook looks happier than me. Everyone has more exotic vacations. Every Thanksgiving turkey is a prettier golden brown shade. Everyone on Facebook is better than me. It’s okay. I made peace with that.

But that was a whole new level of deterioration. Facebook didn’t just belittle me. Now it had actually wiped me out.

As far as Facebook was concerned, I was never Mary Poppins – and who should I argue with? I didn’t have my own pictures. All I had were my memories – and how conclusive were they when the internet was here now? It was a 21st century version of that unanswerable question: If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound? If something happens but Facebook doesn’t acknowledge it … did it really happen?

The next morning I went about my normal business and felt anything but normal. Instead, I felt kind of transparent, like the cashier at the grocery store could put her hand right through me like people did with Patrick Swayze in the movie “Ghost”. Yes, it was ridiculous – it was just a sixth grade play; it was just Facebook. But it was still sad. How could no one remember that I was up there on that stage?

Set the record right

And then, as I got into my car, a warning came on my cell phone: Karen M. tagged you on Facebook. I held my breath hoping this was what I thought and clicked my way to Facebook. Indeed, there was Karen M’s comment, glorious in its simplicity:

“I think Barbara S. was Mary Poppins.”

Oh happy day! If Mark Zuckerberg had been around I would have wrapped my arms around him. After a short time, Sarah B. agreed that she was wrong, and Jennifer K. spoke up to say that she had actually played the little girl Jane. Then Brad R., who played her little brother Michael, summed it up – with the word you say when there is nothing else to say:

Supercalifragilisticxpialidocious, he wrote.

For me, this #TBT post and its aftermath was a game changer. It showed me that Facebook is a funhouse mirror in which our reflection is not formed by what we do, but by what others make of us. No wonder people check their posts with such anticipation and hope for an endless stream of “likes”, “favorites” and other positive emoticons.

Although I still use it both professionally and personally, I have taught myself to look at the real world when I need recognition or a memory that is important to me. As a source of emotional comfort, Facebook is a fickle friend.

“What the Democratic Party is basically doing is taking away anything that gives us hope and excitement,” Owens said. “They really are a grumpy, dark, depressed party, and on the other side of the coin, we’re optimistic, we’re easy. We say let’s go out and make things happen. Let’s find out.”

In his RNC speech, Owens shared that he lost everything after his Super Bowl championship with the Oakland Raiders and moved his family of six to a one-room apartment in Brooklyn, where he took a daytime job as a chimney sweep and a security guard at night.

Far from being practically perfect in every way, Julie Andrews once put a bumper sticker on her car that said, “Mary Poppins is a junkie.”

It was a joking, failed attempt to banish the sugary reputation she had for the role – but if she’d actually told the truth behind the classic movie, she might have made it.

The actress shocked the kids in the film with her cursing and smoking on set – while co-star Dick Van Dyke was an alcoholic who struggled with suicidal thoughts while dancing around singing “Chim Chim Cher-ee.”

Meanwhile, the writer of the original Poppins novels was at war with the film’s producer, Walt Disney, obsessed with the occult, pursued by allegations of racism, and accused of ruining her adopted son’s life.

Matthew Garber, who played the cheerful young Michael Banks in the 1964 box office hit, later tragically died at the age of 21 after contracting hepatitis in India.

Despite all of this, the film remains a popular family favorite – and a sequel, “Mary Poppins Returns,” which began on December 21st with Emily Blunt as the bag-carrying nanny in the lead role.

Karen Dotrice, now 63, who played the young Jane Banks in the first film, is not surprised at his esteemed status. She says that despite what was going on backstage, the entire cast realized they were involved in something special.

<img loading="lazy" class="size-nypost-inline-default wp-image-13320951 lazyload" alt="Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, Karin Dotrice and Matthew Garber in "Mary Poppins."" width="300" height="233" srcset="https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/12/122518-mary-poppins4.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=300 300w, https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/12/122518-mary-poppins4.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=640 640w, https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/12/122518-mary-poppins4.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=1280 1280w, https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/12/122518-mary-poppins4.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=600 600w" data-sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 300px"/>(Clockwise from top left) Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews, Matthew Garber and Karen Dotrice in “Mary Poppins”Walt Disney Studios

She said, “We felt like one big family and we all had some fun together that felt really magical.”

But she still remembers her shock as an eight-year-old when she saw Andrews, then 28, in full Edwardian nanny outfit – having a cigarette and exchanging blue language with the crew.

Dotrice added, “There was a curse. Julie Andrews smoked on the set. It was a very real 1960s set, I can tell you that. At first they were polite to minors, but that was soon over. “

Van Dyke has admitted that by the time he played chimney sweep Bert, he was an alcoholic and would show up for shootings the night before.

The actor said, “I would go to work with a terrible hangover, which is really tough when I dance.”

Van Dyke, 37 at the time of filming and now 92, also revealed that alcohol led him into deep depression, revealing, “I’ve been in big trouble, you are becoming suicidal and you think you just can’t move on.”

For the most notorious part of his performance, the Cockney voice, which is still cited as the worst accent in the history of cinema, he does not blame the alcohol.

He blames Andrews for this.

He once stated, “I was working with a cast of almost all of the British and neither Julie nor anyone else said, ‘You know, you should be working on that accent.'”

Van Dyke’s accent is widely considered to be one of the worst in film history.Walt Disney Studios

In the meantime, he was aware that PL Travers – the author of the Poppins books – was not happy with the cast of himself or his co-star.

He said, “She hated Julie and she hated me.”

In fact, as described in the 2013 film about the making of Saving Mr. Banks, Travers hated pretty much anything to do with the five-Academy Award-winning adaptation.

For 20 years she’d sent Walt Disney to packing every time he tried to buy the rights to her stories – and when she finally gave in, she bitterly regretted it.

Her own Poppins character, who first appeared in a novel in 1934, was cold, intimidating, and prone to utterances with “a superior sniff.”

And yet the nanny was here, cute, smiling, in love and dancing with animated penguins. She took it as an insult.

After the premiere, Travers told Walt Disney, “All the animation has to go,” without realizing it was too late. The Mughal corrected her and said, “Pamela, the boat has sailed.”

Travers retaliated by refusing permission to do a sequel – allegedly even in her will that “no Americans should ever be allowed to work on a Poppins project again.”

PL Travers apparently hated the scene in which Van Dyke danced with animated penguins.Walt Disney Studios

She died in 1996 – and Disney is now behind the new film with the approval of her estate.

Ironically, the movie was a passion for Disney and the books a passion for Travers for the same reason – troubled childhood.

Dotrice told The Sun, “PL Travers’ father was angry with her. Walt Disney had a terrible relationship with his father. ”The Mughal saw the story as a fantasy of children turning a cruel father – like his own – into a loving one.

As a result, he changed the character of Mr. Banks from the kind in the books to cold and aloof.

And his painful memories of being an unhappy kid – forced to get up at 4:30 am to deliver newspapers in the snow – also made him determined to treat the kid stars on Poppins well.

Dotrice recalled, “I learned why Uncle Walt was so nice to me and my family because he didn’t want another 8-year-old to have the s-y experiences that he had.”

Travers had seen the character of Mr. Banks as an opportunity to bring back the bank manager father she idolized, but who had died of alcoholism at the age of 7.

She was horrified that he was now being made the villain.

Travers was born Helen Goff in the wilds of Queensland, Australia in 1899 and moved to England at the age of 25.

And although she created the thoroughly right character of Mary Poppins, her life was very unconventional by the standards of the time.

She enjoyed romantic relationships with both men and women.

For 10 years she lived with Madge Burnand, the daughter of the editor of Punch – who once took a picture of Travers frolicking topless on an Italian beach.

Travers later fell in love with the poet Francis McNamara, an Irish man who once told the author: “Mary Poppins with her cool, green core of sex has captivated me forever.”

Single again at the age of 40, Travers adopted a young boy named Camillus from a large, troubled family in Ireland.

What Camillus didn’t find out until he was 17 was that he had a twin brother, Anthony, whom Travers didn’t want to care for, even though his parents begged them to take them both with him.

When he learned the truth, he drank with his siblings, a habit that would develop into debilitating alcoholism for both of them.

Camillus died in 2011 as a result of his addiction.

The boys’ eldest brother, Joseph Hone, said, “I don’t think Travers was fit to raise children.”

She had reportedly chosen Camillus as her twin on the advice of her astrologer – and later became increasingly obsessed with the stars, the occult, and mysticism.

The popularity of Travers’ books faded over the years as racism in them became unacceptable – especially the shocking descriptions of black Americans.

In contrast, those involved in the film continue to thrive on their association with the smash hit.

Andrews, 83 – a stage star when she won the role – caused a sensation and landed an Academy Award for Best Actress and her role in The Sound Of Music. She is a lady now.

Van Dyke overcame his demons and became one of the most recognizable faces on US television.

Dotrice continued playing until the age of 24, then decided, “I’d rather just get married and become a mother and that’s it.”

Tragically, Garber, who played her brother Michael, only lived to be 21 years old.

Despite rumors that drugs played a role in contracting the hepatitis that killed him after a trip to India, his family insisted it was caused by eating bad meat.

He and Dotrice made a perfect team and worked on other films together as kids.

She said, “We had a great childhood. We shot three films together. “

“I wish he were here to make those comments too.”

When parents with tired toddlers pushed through the turnstiles at Disneyland after sunset on February 7th, an equally enthusiastic crowd of eager guests lined up to board.

That chilly Thursday night, Disneyland hosted Sweethearts Nite, the newest of its late-night parties on Disneyland After Dark. At these regular events, a limited number of ticket buyers willing to pay $ 95-109 can enjoy exclusive use of the park and most of its rides for four hours.

But the rides aren’t the only attraction. Each of the themed events – Sweethearts Nite was the third in the series since January 2018 – features up-close Disney character encounters, special photo opportunities, live concerts, unique food and gift items for sale, and custom lighting and other features that most parking visitors will never see it.

Diana Griffith was one of the well-heeled ticket buyers who met friends in the park for Sweethearts Nite. The retired CPA, who grew up in Los Angeles and now lives in Arizona, visits Disneyland and its sister park Disney California Adventure three to ten days a month with her annual pass. She doesn’t mind paying for the after dark parties as they offer an experience that is unique from a day visit.

“I love the surprises they put into these events,” said Griffith, who is also a longtime member of Club 33 for Disneyland members only. There is always something new to see and do. “

Since their inception, the after-hours parties have consistently sold out within weeks of being announced. The next event on March 7th, “90s Night”, sold out in January. This spring there is also “Heroes Assemble”, a two-day superhero event on April 30th and May 1st at the adjoining Disney California Adventure Park. Tickets will go on sale on February 19th for annual pass holders and on February 21st for the general public.

Disneyland After Dark was created last year as a throwback to a program the Anaheim theme park launched in the late 1950s called “Date Night.” Adults could arrive after the park’s opening hours, purchase a special pair ticket book, and enjoy rides and special entertainment, said Andrae Gill, spokeswoman for the Disneyland Resort.

The name “Disneyland After Dark” was borrowed from the name of an episode of the TV episode “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Colors” from April 15, 1962, in which the former mousepad Annette Funicello took the audience on a tour through the park after work .

Most Disney visitors are content with visiting the theme parks for day visits. But the real Disney fans buy annual tickets, join the official Disney fan club D23, collect limited goods and grab tickets for special occasions.

“It’s an expensive hobby, but there’s no place like it,” said Laura Posey, who flew out of the Bay Area with her husband Aaron Goldsmid and 3-year-old son on the morning of February 7 on Whirlwind Date Night at Disneyland After Dark .

Silicon Valley employees Posey and Goldsmid had booked an overnight stay at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and booked a babysitter for their son so they could dress in glitzy retro clothes for their date night in the park.

“We work in the tech industry and we work very hard and long hours. So this is our escape,” she said. “My husband is not a relaxer, but he loves the rides.”

A couple poses for a photo titled “Aladdin” during Sweethearts Nite on January 7th, one of the After Dark special ticket parties at Disneyland Resort.

(Pam Collar / San Diego Union-Tribune)

After Dark ticket holders can enter the park at 6 p.m. and mingle with the crowd of the day until the park is closed for the day. Only then do the specialty foods, custom lighting, and costumed Disney characters appear.

Gill declined to say how many tickets it is selling for the After Dark events, but it is meant to ensure that guests don’t wait long in line and can get to any special events of the evening during the four-hour window.

Upon entering the park, After Dark guests will receive a printed brochure listing all open attractions, evening entertainment and special photo locations, as well as unique foods and gifts for sale.

Hundreds of guests lined up at Sweethearts Nite to be the first to buy a $ 18 plastic popcorn bucket from Minnie Mouse. Hundreds more were seen waiting for the opportunity to pose like scattered toys in front of a one-night-only backdrop for “Toy Story”.

In Fantasyland, guests could go straight to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, a ride usually known for its slow line. And in New Orleans Square, the guests tried the evening specialties: Burning Love Valentine churros and chocolate-coated strawberry fritters.

One of the highlights of the event was the Royal Princess Ball in the courtyard near It’s a Small World. A live band played while Cinderella, Tiana, and other princesses whirled around the courtyard, first with their princes and then with park goers who were quickly invited to join in.

Many ticket buyers, like Posey and Goldsmid, like to dress in costumes for the events. Ticket holders strolling through the park on Sweethearts Nite included Mary Poppins and her chimney sweep Bert, Woody and Jessie from Toy Story, Princess Leia and Chewbacca, and Belle and her prince “Beast”.

Mark and Maria Petrello from Long Beach came dressed as Star Wars siblings Luke and Leia. They wore the same costumes for the two-day Disneyland After Dark Star Wars events last spring and enjoyed the evening so much that they plan to host at least two of the parties this year.

“It’s fun to dress up and it’s great to walk around without the crowds,” Maria said. “Everyone is in a good mood. It’s something special. “

Griffith doesn’t dress up for the After Dark parties, but she said she never gets tired of going back to Disneyland again and again as it’s the only park where Walt Disney himself walked the sidewalks and in the apartment above the fire station Main Street stayed.

It’s such a wonderful place, ”she said. “I don’t think there is anyone, past or present, who brought more smiles into the world than Walt Disney.”

This spring’s two-day Heroes Assemble Party is the first after dark party to be hosted at Disney California Adventure. There will be encounters with Marvel superheroes including Black Panther and Captain Marvel, a scavenger hunt, comic art show, and Marvel-themed foods like the kebab that the heroes consumed in the post-credits scene on The Avengers . Tickets are $ 109.
