WEISSE SOX 5, ROTE SOX 4

NATIONALE 2, PADRES 0

Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger scored the first hit and first RBI of his rehab stint at Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday. Those are promising signs he’s regaining his timing before returning from a bone contusion in his left knee.

And he played first base for the second year in a row.

“His biggest influence for the Cubs is probably playing midfield,” said Jed Hoyer, president of baseball operations. “But if we put him back in the lineup and get his legs under him and things like that, it just makes a lot of sense.”

If Bellinger is ready to return, the Cubs will have to decide how to make room for him on the roster and what his temporary move to first base means for rookie Matt Mervis. They were scheduled to meet late Wednesday to discuss their options, the Sun-Times learned.

Mervis has shown signs of adjustment lately. He hit a home run in San Francisco last weekend and hit an RBI single in the Cubs’ 11-3 win over the Pirates on Tuesday. But those hits also followed a 1:26 stretch. After going 2-0 on Wednesday, he hits .167 with five extra base hits.

“He’s obviously very talented,” Hoyer said. “But this is the highest level and it’s difficult to adapt here.” And he’s working hard to make those adjustments.”

Mervis’ performance in Triple-A suggests he doesn’t have much left to learn at this level. But the Cubs have also used Triple-A as a venue to boost batsmen’s confidence and get them on the rhythm before retrieving them.

The Cubs have seen strong growth from Mervis since he signed with them in 2020 after he was not selected in that year’s pandemic-shortened MLB draft. In his first season on the system, he hit .204 in the single-A Myrtle Beach before climbing through the ranks in 2022 with an impressive 36 homers.

“He struggled a little bit in the minors and he made those adjustments,” Hoyer said. “And I have no doubt that he will make it here.”

Hughes explores possibilities

Earlier this year, the Cubs expressed optimism that a revised routine would be enough to ease left-hander Brandon Hughes’ recurring inflammation in his left knee. But when he ended up on the 15-day injured list this week, it was clear they needed to reassess that.

“It gave glimpses of the pitcher he was for us last year,” Hoyer said. “But those were only glimpses, and the rest of the time he struggled with genuine unease.” . . “Although he might be able to do that – and I think he’s strong and wants the ball – I also think he wasn’t that effective.”

Hoyer said that “everything will be on the table” while the Cubs look for solutions. After a 3.12 ERA as a rookie and taking on a highly effective bullpen role in the second half of last season, Hughes has a 7.24 ERA in 17 appearances this season.

More updates on injuries

Left fielder Ian Happ acted as batsman-designate on Wednesday after leaving Tuesday’s game with a sore calf. Manager David Ross said Happ told him the spot on his foot where he was hit on Tuesday was more painful than his calf.

“So I think he’s fine,” Ross said.

Left-hander Justin Steele’s bullpen session on Tuesday went well, Ross said. Steele (strained left forearm) was originally scheduled to pitch to the batsmen, but the rain pushed the session inside. He’s on track to return from Illinois on Saturday.

First baseman Edwin Rios (strained left groin) began rehab at Triple-A Iowa and won as a DH 2-5.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — He’s pleased with what he’s seen of Kyle Hendricks since the pitcher left the injured …

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Manager David Ross has been pleased with what he’s seen of Kyle Hendricks since the pitcher was taken off the injured list and was more than happy to let the former Chicago Cubs star rule his game on Saturday permit.

With the way the outing turned out, Hendricks can probably expect to do it more often.

Hendricks didn’t allow a hit until Mitch Haniger doubled with two outs in the eighth inning to beat the Cubs 4-0 over the San Francisco Giants.

“He was in control of his pitches,” Ross said. “It was just a high-level conviction in every pitch where he was in control.”

Hendricks (1-2) was dealing with a batter above the minimum and Michael Conforto with a second-round out and had 19 straight batsmen retired before Haniger hit a fastball 378 feet off the left fieldwall in the eighth play away the at-bat struck. That ended the longest no-hit bid in the major leagues this season.

“He won’t blow you away with his speed, but the move makes his fastball game much better,” Haniger said. “He’s good and mixes pitches all over the zone.”

Blake Sabol flew out on Hendricks’ next pitch.

“The last few starts I felt like I was finding my rhythm and making a lot of good shots,” said Hendricks. “The rhythm was simply better today. I got away with a few things in the beginning, then I really got going in the fourth or fifth inning. There are still some things I need to improve and work on, but I’m definitely feeling good.”

Julian Merryweather was eliminated in the ninth round with three straight batters, completing the one-hitter and giving the Cubs their first straight win since May 29-30.

Christopher Morel hit a home run and drove in three runs, and Matt Mervis also hit a home run.

Hendricks started the season on the injured list with an overstressed right shoulder. He made his season debut on May 25, completing his fourth start. He threw 61 of 94 shots for strikes, none faster than 89.4 miles per hour.

The 33-year-old right-hander, who was in the tenth season of his major league career playing exclusively with the Cubs, has made six full games and four shutouts in 226 starts.

Midfielder Mike Tauchman helped by denying Brandon Crawford an extra base hit near the warning lane with a backhand catch in the third set.

Both Ross and Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya called it one of the best grabs of the season.

“At first glance, I didn’t think I had a chance, but that’s why you go hard, just in case,” Tauchman said.

Morel hit a home run against Jakob Junis (3:3) and led the third round. The ball bounced off the wall back onto the field. Unaware of the decision, Morel raced around bases until second base umpire and crew chief Brian O’Nora signaled the home run.

Morel added a two-out, two-run single in the fifth set.

Giants opener John Brebbia, who also started Tuesday’s win against Colorado, threw two innings without a hit with a strikeout. Brebbia also survived when he was hit by Ian Happ’s 104.9mph bat in the second run.

TRAINING ROOM

Cubs: OF Cody Bellinger (left knee) did some batting practice and ran a little before the game. … RHP Bruce Boxberger (pulled right forearm) threw a 26-pitch bullpen session.

Giants: C Joey Bart was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and selected for Triple-A Sacramento late Friday night. … RHP Scott Alexander (hamstring pain) was unready to play.

NEXT

Cubs RHP Hayden Wesneski (2-2, 4.81 ERA) starts Sunday’s Finals in his first start against San Francisco. Brebbia will play again for the Giants.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants returned home after three games and faced one of baseball’s hottest pitchers in Marcus Stroman. But the Giants had one of his nemesis.

Joc Pederson came on with a .455 average, including four doubles in 11 at-bat against Stroman in his career. He added three hits to that tally on Friday, including a single that lasted a rally and hit his first run in the third inning. But Pederson’s championship wasn’t enough as they lost 3-2 to the Chicago Cubs at Oracle Park on Friday night.

Pederson was instrumental in helping the Giants close a two-run deficit late in the seventh round. Brandon Crawford doubled on a drive down the right field line and moved up to third with an out, putting Pederson ahead and causing Cubs manager David Ross to pull Stroman.

Pederson’s fourth hit of the game came from substitute Mark Leiter Jr. with a dribbler that bounced off his stick at 63.3 mph. He was initially knocked out of the game by a hair’s breadth, but the call was overturned and Crawford’s quick home game made it a one-run game.

Anthony DeSclafani seemed to be on par with Stroman, keeping the Chicago Cubs to two hits in his first six innings while the Giants limited one run to Stroman. But a difficult inning brought him down.

Seiya Suzuki amassed his second hit of the night – reaching base four times – to start the inning, and Ian Happ walked to put the deciding run into goal position, prompting manager Gabe Kapler to pull his starter out of the to take game. Unable to upset DeSclafani, reliever Ryan Walker pitched to Matt Mervis to weight the bases and gave Nico Hoerner a green-ahead single. Tucker Barnhart added another run on single to flat midfield to give the Cubs the run that gave them the game.

DeSclafani went through six innings, allowing two runs with three hits, four walks, and two strikeouts.

JD Davis was left out of the lineup before the game due to hip strains, but Patrick Bailey hit a pinch late in the ninth inning. A double win began in the ninth inning, this time with no comeback magic.

SAN FRANCISCO — Pinch-hitter Nico Hoerner hit a lone two-run single in the seventh run, assisting Marcus Stroman’s fifth straight win. The Chicago Cubs battled the San Francisco Giants 3-2 on Friday night and went on a four-game losing streak.

Stroman (7-4) has won every time since losing to Minnesota on May 14. He allowed two runs with six hits over 6 2/3 innings, hitting out five and walking four in his 14th start of the year as a team leader.

Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (4-6) gave up Seiya Suzuki’s seventh-round opener and then went to Ian Happ before manager Gabe Kapler handed him off to backup Ryan Walker. He knocked out Dansby Swanson with a flyball and then knocked Matt Mervis to the ground. Then came a rested Horner who had most of the evening off.

Tucker Barhart, too, notched an RBI single in the crucial seventh game on a night when Cubs manager David Ross shook up his lineup and tried to “create a spark” amid recent offensive troubles. Chicago has done just enough for Stroman.

Thairo Estada had an RBI double against Stroman in the third set and Joc Pederson contributed four singles against his former club, but the Giants’ three-game winning streak was broken — an RBI infield single in the seventh game that came after a first decision was won at the retest he was initially thrown out. This weekend, they’re making a quick stop at home before heading back to St. Louis and Los Angeles.

Adbert Alzolay knocked out Brandon Crawford with what he called a third strike and ended the game with his third save as the Cubs went 8-7 against the NL West.

San Francisco has allowed five runs or fewer in 15 straight games against the Cubs — the longest run of that kind since the New York Giants restricted them to five or fewer in 16 straight encounters from July 1929 to May 1921.

A post-game drone show was canceled due to a technical issue.

TRAINING ROOM

Cubs: Ross wanted to give 2B Hoerner a day off to clear his head and get back on his feet after going 0-8 in the last two games and leaving the Cubs in the middle of a 10-day West Coast tour with no days off were . In the ninth game, he was again a single.

Giants: 3B JD Davis was a late scratch with strains in his right hip and Casey Schmitt replaced him. … C Joey Bart was in San Francisco to have his overstressed left groin tested and examined. … LHP Alex Wood (back strain) threw off a mound and RHP Ross Stripling (back strain) may be scheduled for a bullpen session as soon as Sunday.

squad change

The Cubs recalled INF Nick Madrigal from Triple-A Iowa and selected INF Miles Mastrobuoni to Iowa. Madrigal started second and went 0 to 3 with a walk and strikeout.

NEXT

RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-2, 4.70 ERA) plays for the Cubs on Saturday after winning 10 previous career games against San Francisco 5-2 and a 2.29 career ERA. The Giants had yet to name a starter.

The last time we saw Taijuan Walker, he was giving up four runs over forty pitches in the first inning — an inning he couldn’t even finish before the hook knocked him off the stage. The rest of the gang fared no better that day, or at any game in San Francisco. They fell into an annoying pattern: they dropped runners, made costly mistakes, and gave up shot after shot, resulting in run after run. Walker came into tonight’s game with just three days off since that brief but infamous performance. Today he started the game with a clean first inning and continued to shine in 5.1 innings without a score, conceding just two hits, making three walks and hitting three strikeouts.

I gotta love a good redemption story. Let’s hope this is the walker that appears on every launch from now on.

Eric Hartline – USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday, Trea Turner was granted a break from the lineup after a disappointing start to his tenure as a pinstripe player. He hit more home runs and had more RBIs in the seven games of the World Baseball Classic than in the first quarter of the regular season. As he enters the batter’s box, he looks just as tense and frustrated as the fan base watching him, which became very real for him when Friday night’s sell-out crowd expressed their disappointment at his performance in the manner in which he was in the Philly holds every player accountable – a rousing cacophony of boos. He was reported to have been working with Kevin Long yesterday afternoon and returned to the lineup today to take the batting lead. He huffed in the first and third innings. But at the end of the seventh set he hit a line drive into the gap for a double and this time the crowd cheered the new shortstop.

Against left-hander Justin Steele, who has performed well for the Cubs this season except for his last game against Houston, Rob Thomson once again chose to sit on Marsh and Stott. Although Topper knows baseball and this team better than any other writer or commentator, one has to wonder if their contributions would have resulted in more runs today had they both started the game independently left-handed on the mound. Still, a win is a win.

In the second inning, the Phillies reached base when Steele defeated Kyle Schwarber with a 94 MPH sinker. With two punches to him, Bohm hit a slider into flat right field. Edmundo Sosa grounded Schwarber and Bohm to shortstop for second and third, but consistent with the Phillies’ recent schtick, the inning ended without a hit when Josh Harrison grounded.

Daulton Guthrie got a piece of a first-pitch sinker for a two-out double at the end of the fifth set – his first hit of the season. Trea Turner busted to – by now you know how the song goes, so sing along – take the bishop to No. 1.

After defeating Nico Hoerner in the fifth set, Walker was replaced by Seranthony Dominguez. A pick-off attempt went past Bohm, allowing Hoerner to move into second place. Seranthony then went to Dansby Swanson. He prompted a pop-up from Ian Happ and hit Seiya Suzuki to end the inning. Seranthony hasn’t given up on his deserved run since April 14th.

At the end of the sixth period, while Steele was still on the mound for the Cubs, Nick Castellanos nailed a slider into the left corner of field, earning him second place in standing. He was knocked out in third place by a laser shot from Suzuki in right field after a high pop-up from Harper.

In the seventh round, Sosa hit an Adbert Alzolay sweeper into the left corner of the field and pulled to second base while standing. Daycare graduate Bryson Stott, who was used as Harrison’s backup, got to the plate, looked at a shot, swung and missed a fastball, then hammered a four-seater into the right field grandstand to break the deadlock and raised the Phillies at two. Kyle Schwarber spoke for all of us with his reaction from the dugout.

It was the first close home run of Stott’s career.

Craig Kimbrel took the ball in the ninth, finished the game and hit two before giving a home run to Christopher Morel, who may think he’s a cat, but maybe not. Trey Mancini came to the plate with two outs and worked an eight-pitch walk. Then Patrick Wisdom entered the box that represented the potential winning run. But the baseball gods smiled at Philly today, ending the suspense with a pop-up behind the plate that mask-shed JT Realmuto was able to pursue and catch to end the game. It’s Kimbrel’s 399th career parade.

After being defeated twice by the Cubs last year it’s nice to see a streak from them, especially in front of a sold out crowd on a warm and sunny South Philly afternoon. The pitching team put on a solid performance, with Walker, Dominguez, Strahm, Brogdon, Soto and Kimbrel combined in a three-hit game and conceded just a single earned run. However, the offensive was 7-1 today, with the runners on goal and a total of seven players left behind. While they could get away with it today against the Cubs, teams like the Braves – who the Phils meet next weekend – are unlikely to fail to take advantage of the Phillies’ inability to move runners across the plate.

Game thread comment of the day

Today’s game thread comment of the day is from MG77.

next up

The Phillies are scheduled to host the Arizona Diamondbacks (27-20) tomorrow at 6:40 p.m. Zack Wheeler (3-3, 3.45 ERA) will take the mound for the Phillies.

Observations from left field

Dansby Swanson continues to have the dumbest name in baseball history, even surpassing Steve Sharts, Rusty Kuntz and Cannonball Titcomb.

On a cool, foggy night in Minnesota, Joey Gallo was hiking through the woods under a full moon when he heard a branch snap behind him. He turned and saw a shadow moving through the mist in the trees behind him. Frightened, he quickened his pace. Footsteps followed, coming closer, and he felt the hot breath of something inhuman crawling down his neck. Knowing he shouldn’t but couldn’t help it, he peered behind him. And then bearded Kyle Schwarber, wild-eyed, grabbed Gallo and pinned him to the ground. Schwarber looked at the full moon and howled before turning his attention to the terrified twin and sinking his teeth into Gallo’s flesh. The darkness swallowed him. When he finally regained consciousness the next morning, Joey Gallo staggered out of the woods and now has 11 homers and 23 RBIs despite hitting just .215 over 107 at bats.

According to the Cubs, Sunday’s game marked the seventh time Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo have hit consecutive home runs, the fourth most frequent duo in franchise history. They hit consecutive home runs in the first inning of the 5-1 win over Arizona. Maybe for the last time with the Cubs? That remains to be seen, but the MLB trading deadline comes on Friday and both players will become free agents after the season.

Leading the Cubs’ back-to-back home runs are Sammy Sosa and Mark Grace (nine times), Billy Williams and Ron Santo (eight), and Ernie Banks and Santo (eight).

Rizzo’s home run was his first at Wrigley Field since June 11, but he added another in the first inning on Monday, with Bryant scoring ahead of him.

On their way into the action on Monday, the Cubs were ninth in the majors with 126 home runs. San Francisco leads with 151.

Well, at least they just barely made it in the end.

Yes, I’m fighting for positive results from the Cubs’ third straight loss, 4-3 to the Giants, and that’s all I have.

A furious ninth inning rally backed by some sketchy Giants defenses stayed short after the Giants pitchers 18 just retired Cubs batter.

The game started well again. Kohl Stewart looked pretty good for two innings and with Anthony Rizzo at the base in the second inning, Patrick Wisdom gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Nice to grab a pen too – not sure who that is. Does anyone recognize the guy who caught the ball?

That was Wisdom’s fifth home run of the season – in 30 at-bats. He had four for the Cardinals in 2018, so that’s a career high in just 12 games played (and he made a lone appearance in four of those 12 games). When all the injured boys return, they’ll have to find a role for him.

And here is an eclectic list of cubs:

Best SLG% in the first 14 games of the Cubs career since 1901 (at least 20 AB):

.906: Patrick Wisdom (’20 -21)
.854: Donnie Murphy (2013)
.806: Glenallen Hill (1993)
.800: Frank Ernaga (1957)
.800: Babe Phelps (’33 -34)

– Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) June 6, 2021

And not a list of Cubs who had stellar careers, though Glenallen Hill had its moments, scoring 59 home runs in 331 games in two separate stints with the Cubs (1993-94 and 1998-2000).

The only other Cubs hit before the ninth in Saturday’s contest was a single by Stewart, which led the third, his first major league hit. He was stranded and Javy Baez’s single in the ninth was the next Cubs hit – and those three were it for the game.

Give credit to Kevin Gausman for acting.

Meanwhile, the Giants were in the third and two more in the fourth ahead of Stewart, who battled his way to 79 total pitch scores while only posting 11 outs. The Cubs pen threw 4ning innings, allowing only two hits and three walks, but one of those walks, edited by Dan Winkler, resulted in the Giants’ fourth run. That was the decisive balance.

Cory Abbott was one of the Cubs’ replacements and he threw well on his Major League debut. He mainly threw fastballs at 93-94 mph, spent a walk and allowed a hit in two innings, but never gave up on a run.

The ninth inning in front of Submarine Giants specialist Tyler Rogers gave the Cubs their last chance. Rafael Ortega grabbed a mistake and after Kris Bryant scored in a force play, Javier Baez KB isolated in third place.

That game was scored by Bryant [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shortstop and third baseball clash on a routine floor ball – especially two guys who have been around for as long as Brandon Crawford and Evan Longoria. Longoria was upset and had to leave the game. Hope he is fine.

Back to the action that brought the tie run to the scoring position and the lead run to first base. Willson Contreras cut the second out. I had thought that Javy might start third and try to pull a throw, and eventually Baez stole third base while Rizzo moved up to second. That got two runners into the points, but Jason Heyward hung up to finish it.

I mentioned Ortega above … he didn’t start this game. Why was he in the game?

Joc Pederson left the game tonight with a tight lower right back, per #Cubs.

– Russell Dorsey (@ Russ_Dorsey1) June 6, 2021

That apparently is also why Tommy hit Nance on fifth strike – two out and no one on the base and David Ross didn’t want to burn a pinch hitter so early as Ortega had to come into play for Pederson. That’s all the Cubs need, one more injured player, especially when Joc starts hitting. How did it happen?

Ross said Pederson pinched his back when he met Dickerson’s Homer in the third on the left wall of the field. Sounds like an everyday situation.

– Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) June 6, 2021

Here’s the piece in which that happened:

All in all, Saturday wasn’t a good day for the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers won on Saturday so the Cubs are now in first place with Milwaukee, both teams 32-26. The Cardinals lost their Saturday game against the Reds and are 1½ games behind first place.

The Cubs hope to make Sunday better and save one game from this four-game set. Kyle Hendricks will start for the Cubs and our old nemesis Johnny Cueto will start for the Giants. Game time is 3:05 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be on Marquee Sports Network.

Three games in San Francisco everything seemed to go wrong for the Cubs.

When they caught a few breaks in the ninth innings on Saturday, they couldn’t take advantage and dropped their third game in a row at the bay.

It’s like the tables have been turned for the Cubs. All of those things the Cubs did to win nine of their previous 10 games are now part of the Giants’ raffle roster. With pitcher Kevin Gausman limiting the Cubs to 2 hits through 7 innings, San Francisco pulled out a 4-3 win on Saturday.

“I don’t think we played terrible baseball,” said manager David Ross. “Today I thought your mug was damn good.”

On the third day in a row, the Cubs took an early lead thanks to a home run. This time it was Patrick Wisdom, who shot his fifth home run in 12 games since joining the team, giving the Cubs 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Otherwise, the Cubs’ thugs were baffled by Kevin Gausman’s Splitter. Gausman, 30, has been a journeyman starter with limited success for most of his career. But he improved to 7-0 that season with a 1.27 ERA.

“This is a difficult place to sit in,” said Wisdom. “I wouldn’t necessarily call it a sliver either. He can make it do different things. Sometimes it goes straight down like a sliver and sometimes it fades like a change. It’s a tough place to sit on.

“Fortunately, I hit a fastball that he left in the middle of the plate well. It’s difficult with a guy like that, you might see a good pitch to hit. Fortunately, I was able to put a barrel on it.”

Kohl Stewart made his second start with the Cubs but wasn’t as effective as on his debut. Holding on to a 2-1 lead, Cubs pitchers gave up leadoff walks in both the fourth and fifth innings and both runners scored a result.

When Ross turned to rescuer Tommy Nance to get out of the fourth inning, he might have made it a blow too late, as the last hit Stewart faced was Lamonte Wade Jr., who kicked off the finish line.

“They put tough ABs together,” said Stewart. “They bring the ball into play and put pressure on you on the grassroots. I just didn’t have a heat command today and couldn’t get a feel for my sinker. I fell behind a lot in the end and the guys made me pay for it.”

After 4-2 in the ninth inning, the Cubs eventually got a series of breaks. Rafael Ortega took out and made a mistake. Then Kris Bryant missed a perfect double play ball, but second baseman Mauricio Dubon dropped the ball on the transfer and Bryant was initially safe.

After a Javy Baez single, Anthony Rizzo hit another double play ball short and this time the left side of the Giants infield, Brandon Crawford and Evan Longoria collided. Longoria had to leave the game, Bryant scored and the Cubs had two runners on base.

Willson Contreras faced the San Francisco submarine pitcher Tyler Rodgers and hit a 3-2, 71 mph slider. Then Jason Heyward rose to end the game.

“It’s definitely hard to lose three in a row,” said Wisdom. “Losing is no fun, whether it’s one or three. I think this team is good at flushing it. Understand what happened, where we made mistakes, what we need to do better and how we did the next day go ahead and the negativity, I think we can flip the switch. “

Cory Abbott made his major league debut, putting on two goalless innings.
