A few minutes ago, the San Francisco Giants announced that after yesterday’s game, David Villar was selected for the Triple-A Sacramento to activate Brandon Crawford for tonight’s finals in Arizona.

Not at all surprising — Susan Slusser interviewed him in an article published May 10, in which even he knew the signs were up — but another step that shows the Giants are walking a tightrope in rebuilding and developing . Gabe Kapler says in the Slusser article I wanted to write here:

“The only thing I still want to be very clear about is that David has only had 100 record appearances,” said Kapler. “It’s a really quick look and given his track record you know he’s a good hitter. I didn’t even pay a moment’s attention to the traditional line stats. Underneath, there were enough hard shots and consistent enough balls in the air that you feel like he’s going to get some good results in the end.

Villar’s 50% ball rate is exactly 100 PA and his 14.3% FB/HR rate is almost exactly the same as the team’s overall rate of 17.4% (second best in MLB). However, the 30% strikeout rate is a real disappointment – he just doesn’t put a lot of balls in play. Statcast likes his defense and we saw him do well on second base after JD Davis’ glove on third base was so surprising that it overpowered him.

At the end of last year I raised my flag at Villar:

Villar’s success doesn’t seem to me to be a coincidence. Those 47 home runs come with a .275/.388/.555 line in 812 plate appearances. He carried this over to a .231/.332/.455 line in 181 major league plate appearances.

[…]

FanGraphs’ Steamer predictions rate Davis and Villar similarly and not in a way that suggests they will be key players — .325 woBA for both, with Villar ahead in fWAR and homers: 1.5 to 1.1 13 to 11 respectively. I’m not smart enough to refute predictions, I can only assume what I’ve seen after four years of the Zaidi era, and that’s how they were able to figure out a usage model that maximizes players’ skills. Most of these skills are reflected in publicly available statistics, but not all.

The Giants both have no glaring need that would compel them to be patient for Villar to “complete his development at the major league level” (an expression we’ve heard before when talking about certain prospects in certain situations goes). Let’s hope he can triple-A and retain those lessons when he comes back.

I have a feeling they will need David Villar’s racquet at some point this season.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Meanwhile, the return of Brandon Crawford means Casey Schmitt will be pushed throughout infield if he doesn’t spell the 36-year-old. This will be another important moment for Crawford as – like Villar – there are some signs hanging on the wall. We all know this is Crawford’s final season in the Giants jersey. It could be his last season in Major League Baseball. The 36-year-old midfielder’s story doesn’t point to a triumphant ending. However, it’s still worth introducing him as a starter to see where he lands on the spectrum of prepared and playable characters, and it will be a good test of Schmitt’s versatility.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Luke Jackson will be an important name to remember as we near the end of the month. As Alex Pavlovic notes, he is eligible to complete the 60-day IL (in which he rehabilitated after Tommy John’s surgery) on May 29.

Back in January I wrote about the Jackson acquisition – which is still sort of one of Zaidi’s biggest moves as a POBO – and called it John Brebbia 2.0. In 2021, he pitched in 11 of Atlanta’s 16 postseason games, but also saw his slider spin rate drop after the league began cracking down on sticky players. And then he had TJ surgery last year.

The Giants will need a fresher version of John Brebbia to get through the rest of the season. The one they have now is showing signs of wear and tear from last season’s overuse, and if the Rays’ model of treating pitchers like chewing gum has now become the industry norm, the Giants are going to need a new stick of spearmint here soon. The bullpen is still wobbly.

Of course, the rotation is looking a little shaky at the moment due to Anthony DeSclafani’s toe issue. We found out yesterday that a piano bench fell on his toe the other day and it’s still causing him problems. Everyone I know who has had a fracture or other toe injury has never fully recovered from it. He needs to get a special shoe or something. We hope he doesn’t miss any time. The Giants really need his arm…and they have to hope he doesn’t overcompensate to the point of increasing the risk of an arm injury.

With a name built for the HVAC business, Decoldest Crawford gave us the coldest NIL ad to date.

The Nebraska football player may hail from Louisiana, but he got the bag from SOS Heating & Cooling by making his way up to Lincoln. Although the Cornhuskers are still longing for the days of Bo Pelini and Taylor Martinez, few programs are better positioned to benefit from the wonderful world of NIL quite like Nebraska. So grab yourself a Cinnabon, sit down and enjoy the program.

Crawford knows what’s cooler than being cool? Ice cold! Alright, alright, alright, (alright, alright…)

Decoldest Crawford lands the perfect NIL deal as a Nebraska football player

Although his given name was given to him, Crawford is absolutely making the most of it by cashing them NIL HVAC checks. Assuming he becomes a big part of Nebraska’s turnaround, surely, there will be other NIL opportunities Lincoln, Omaha and the rest of the great state can provide. If he is smart, he can become a business, man, like Ndamukong Suh did with Warren Buffett’s help.

Buffett is getting up there in age, but Suh became proficient in getting the bag as the best Nebraska football player since Eric Crouch. Truth be told, Crawford is not catching Suh, but then again, he is Decoldest. What he really is hoping for is for head coach Scott Frost to stay off the hot seat. With the power of Decoldest and Frost, Nebraska will break the curse of Big Bang Theory.

As Nebraska piles up the wins, we’re talking about mega-blockbuster deals with slushies, refrigerators and freaking coolers, man. With the right amount of coaching, Crawford can learn how to dance like Shaq did with that cat while pushing IcyHot harder than concrete at a Culver’s. Lincoln may be more of a Runza town anyway, but Crawford will push shakes and sundaes as well.

Look for Crawford’s bank account to grow enough to buy one share of Berkshire Hathaway stock!

Good job by Nebraska football player Decoldest Crawford for securing the coldest NIL deal you could have possibly ever imagined.

“If anyone knows which HVAC company is the coldest in Nebraska, it’s him,” SOS Heating & Cooling wrote in a Facebook post, with a picture of two employees posing alongside Crawford.

Crawford — a three-star recruit out of Shreveport, LA — originally committed to LSU, but reopened his recruitment and landed with the Cornhuskers.

“We didn’t expect to be in a situation like this, but the second we saw that Decoldest was signing with Nebraska the light bulb went off immediately,” Jake Wasikowski, in charge of sales and public relations for SOS, told OutKick. “We said we have to get this guy to be the spokesperson for us and so far it’s going really well.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Brandon Crawford opened July with 12 hits in his first 23 at-bats and released 1,371 OPS, making him the most dangerous hitter in the Giants lineup of the past week.

Despite Crawford’s persistence, Giants manager Gabe Kapler routinely put him fifth on the line-up and did so for Wednesday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals. It seems Crawford’s production, coupled with Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria Kapler’s injuries, would justify bringing the club’s top home run hitter up in order, but the Giants have no plans to do so.

Against right-handed starters, the Giants prefer the bat cleanup of left field player Alex Dickerson. Against left-handers, the Giants racket want to bring Darin Ruf to fourth place. With Dickerson hitting .227 with a 94 OPS + for the season, which is six percent below the league average, Giants fans have wondered why the club won’t make a change.

Before the game on Wednesday, Kapler shared his perspective.

“This is about how the opposing team plays against us late in the game, what we can do with our freedom and flexibility,” said Kapler. “It’s not about the best hitters hitting the highest in order. If that were the main consideration, we would write the lineup differently every day. ”

The Giants prioritize flexibility in order to achieve a cheap matchup against relief mugs in situations with high leverage. So if an opponent brings in a left-handed player to gain a draw advantage over Dickerson and Crawford, the Giants can counter that by replacing Ruf or another right-handed outfielder, Austin Slater, from the bench.

“It’s nice to have the guy who you are going to hit (the bat) for at the start of the left-handed run,” Kapler said. “I’m not saying we will always do anything or we will never do anything, but you saw that we are going to hit Dickerson really consistently.”

The Giants usually use a pinch hitter for Dickerson late in the games, as Kapler has replaced him in nine of his last 13 games. They also regularly replace LaMonte Wade Jr., their left-hander who has never scored a hit in 24 careers against left-handers.

By hitting Wade and Dickerson near the top of the line-up, the Giants give them more chances to hit right-handed starters before turning off the bench to their right-handed thugs when the teams are left-handed.

Dickerson arrived in San Francisco after being abandoned by the Padres in 2019 and immediately became an offensive catalyst. Despite fighting injuries and a handful of break-ins, he posted an OPS of around 0.900 in his first two years at the club.

The left-handed hitting the bat has yet to go the kind of run on the plate this year where he put the Giants offensive on his back, but the coaching staff know they can.

“I think in the past few days (Dickerson) had some of the better bats we’ve seen from him in a long time. I think we’re seeing a more confident person at the plate. I think you can feel his energy in the shelter. He knows that his swing is better at the moment than it was a few days ago. ”

Dickerson’s disappointing numbers in 2021 are currently more blatant than ever during the season as the Giants are without so many of their best players, including three in Longoria, Belt and Posey who usually stay in the line-up whether the club is right or right facing left-handed pitchers.

A healthier line-up that doesn’t rely as much on taking advantage of move advantages or covering up discrepancies could have Crawford in the cleanup, but for now the Giants will have to rely on fill-ins like third baseman Jason Vosler and backup catcher Curt Casali more Production to offer.

Vosler won the Triple-A West Player of the Week Award with 12 hits, including three home runs in 25 at-bats, before being recalled to the Giants on Tuesday. The rookie infielder sent a flyball onto the warning lane, which required left fielder Dylan Carlson of the Cardinals with a game-saving, jumping grip in the ninth inning towards the end of the game, but the Giants hope he will propel the ball further while Longoria is out .

With Belt and Longoria may be ready to return from the injured list by the third or fourth week of July, and Posey may be available by the weekend, the Giants believe help is on the way. Meanwhile, players in critical spots will be counted on in order like Dickerson to help the Giants overcome the injuries.

“It’s hard to safely replace these guys,” said Crawford of the team’s injured starters. “It is definitely great to try to get through this with a few wins and not throw off too much would be huge. We have good players who stepped in and did well. We just have to try to keep it that way. ”
