SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Biden administration will issue $220 million in grants to modernize the country’s ferry systems, officials announced Thursday.

The grant program will focus on expanding ferry service in rural communities, helping them acquire modern ferries, including electric boats, and upgrading shore infrastructure to support low-emission ferry service, officials said.

Twelve ferry operators in the territory of American Somoa and the states of California, Washington, Alaska, Maine, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina will receive grants, said Nuria Fernandez, administrator of the Federal Transit Administration.

The grants “will help transit agencies around the country buy and retrofit vessels, upgrade terminals and modernize equipment,” she said during a news conference at San Francisco’s Ferry Building.

The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority and the Golden Gate Ferry will receive about $22 million to retrofit two of their existing ferry floats in the cities of Alameda and San Francisco and replace the ferry landing at Sausalito Ferry Terminal.

The New York City Department of Transportation will receive nearly $7.5 million to build shoreside terminal infrastructure to enable rapid charging for vessels serving Governors Island, which is only accessible by ferry. The new charging system will reduce emissions, decrease maintenance costs and improve reliability for riders, officials said.

With two special people in mind, Thomas “Tommy” Taylor and John “JD” Norton have embarked on a bike ride that will take them from Santa Monica to Boston, with a special stop in Barstow.

During the drive, which began Friday, Taylor will honor his late wife, Thokozile “Thoko” Kesiilwe-Taylor, a nurse who served at Barstow Community Hospital. Thoko, 60, died two years ago after being diagnosed with sarcoidosis, an immune system disorder characterized by the growth of tiny clusters of inflammatory cells in parts of the body.

Taylor will be raising money for the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research, the country’s largest nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for the disease.

Norton, 69, will be riding to raise awareness of organ donation and on behalf of his 8-year-old grandson, Broderick, who is in need of a new kidney.

reunion tour

The longtime friends, who grew up in upstate New York, have kept in touch via social media.

“In 1972, JD and I were a bunch of hippies hitchhiking from New York to San Diego,” said Taylor, 70, who lives in Barstow. “We haven’t seen each other for a while, so I guess you could call that a reunion tour.”

The duo plan to arrive at Barstow Community Hospital by 10am Tuesday, where the men can share their journey and celebrate Thoko’s time at BCH, hospital spokesman John Rader told the Daily Press.

“After leaving the Santa Monica Pier, we’re going east most of Route 66 towards the Midwest and then to Boston,” Taylor said. “We hope to spread our messages online and in person as we head to the East Coast.”

The hospital’s CEO, Adam Loris, said that when Taylor approached the hospital about the opportunity to host the reception, BCH jumped at the opportunity.

“Although I didn’t know his wife, Thoko, since I only recently started at Barstow Community Hospital, what I understand from our staff is that she was one of our beloved nurses,” Loris said. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Thoko while encouraging Tommy and his riding partner JD Norton in their purposeful cross-country ride.”

Memory of Thoko

“Tuesday would have been our 14th wedding anniversary,” Taylor said. “Thoko was a quiet, compassionate person who loved life and had a heart to serve others.”

Raised in “black oppressed” South Africa and under the cloud of apartheid, Thoko was politically active, voting in the first democratic vote in 1994, Taylor said. Thoko became a US citizen and worked hard to get her nursing license before working in Barstow. She would later buy a house, Taylor said.

I owned my own plumbing business and we had an account with the Barstow Community,” Taylor said. “I met Thoko while doing a job. We started talking and eventually got married.”

After being diagnosed with the disease, Thoko’s lungs were affected. The couple made numerous trips for treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

While the couple worked towards getting Thoko a lung transplant, her health continued to deteriorate.

“Thoko passed away in August 2021 and we brought her back to South Africa for her funeral,” Taylor said. “She has a wonderful family and a strong Christian faith. She loved South Africa and her homeland in the US very much.”

Two weeks before his wife died, Taylor’s 23-year-old son Jason, who had a heart transplant as a child, died suddenly. Taylor also mourned the loss of his sister’s son, Joshua, 41, who died in a motorcycle accident.

As the world came crashing down on Taylor, his nephew told him that as part of his healing, he needed to get out and “do something epic.”

“It was April 7, 2022 when I decided to write JD, who I hadn’t seen in 40 years,” Taylor said. “I asked him if he wanted to drive across America.”

Norton happily agreed to ride along, not just to accompany his friend, but to ride on behalf of Broderick and anyone in need of an organ.

“April is National Donate Life Month to encourage organ donor registration,” Norton said. “It’s a perfect time for riding.”

Norton rides for his grandson.

“Broderick had a traumatic birth, he was born prematurely, which affected his liver and kidneys,” said Norton, an Army veteran who lives in Colorado Springs. “His liver recovered, but one kidney failed and the other remained partially functional.”

Broderick battled COVID-19, but the virus continued to damage his remaining kidney, Norton said.

“If we don’t get a kidney, the goal is for him to get into his teens before dialysis,” Taylor said. “My daughter is helping Broderick with medication and diet, but he is in Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease.”

Do something epic

In order to ride 3,000 miles, Taylor sold his business, bought a touring bike, and began long-distance training.

“Part of my training consisted of getting dropped off in Las Vegas and driving about 150 miles back to Barstow,” Taylor said. “The mindset on this journey is to ride 3,000 miles piece by piece.”

Before retiring, Norton was a dedicated bike commuter and worked in the semiconductor industry.

“I also love mountain biking, so I’m always up for a challenge,” said Norton. “I bought a steel frame touring bike and started riding 50 miles about three or four times a week.”

Taylor said he’ll be thinking of Thoko every inch of the way from California to Massachusetts.

“Thoko loved life and she was the love of my life,” Taylor said. “I will always remember our life together.”

To raise funds, Taylor created the Sarkoid Bike Tour GoFundMe account and online site, sarkoidbiketour.com.

Filming of Peaky Blinders at Black Country Living Museum. Paul Anderson and Cillian Murphy.

Presenters Matt Edmondson and Mollie King were quizzed by a man named Jonathan as part of the Have You Been Paying Attention Quiz on Sunday.

It sees the pair asked about things which have happened during the week by a listener – with the first question of the segment being about Peaky Blinders.

And it led to a gaffe with the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, the answer to the question, being labeled as in Birmingham despite the museum’s obvious name.

Jonathan asked: “Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has said the story could potentially return to television with a new creative team. What museum is the series filmed in, in Birmingham?”

Matt said he “didn’t know it was filmed inside a museum” which was backed up by fellow presenter Molly. The male presenter added the show was something he “tried to watch” but he never warmed to it – despite joking he was jealous of the suits and flat caps, but would look like a “little chimney sweep” if he replicated it.

Matt added: “It’s got to be like a museum of old Britain, hasn’t it? When is it set, like around the war isn’t it? The museum of the 20s or 30s. Hang on, in Birmingham there’s a chocolate factory. No, is there a museum of chocolate? No, they wouldn’t film it there, that would make no sense.”

The two presenters asked to be put out of their misery – with Jonathan revealing the answer, although he got the name wrong – saying “It’s the Black Country Living History Museum” to which Matt responded: “of course, the BCLHM that one.”

And the presenter added: “I think there are people who worked on Peaky Blinders who are going ‘I don’t know the answer to that question’.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced a state of emergency Thursday over the rapidly growing number of monkeypox cases in the city.

The legal action, which goes into effect Monday, allows officials to mobilize personnel and resources and cut through red tape to get ahead of the mounting public health crisis. City officials hope that the declaration will also pressure the federal government to increase the available supply of the monkeypox vaccine.

“We are at a very scary place,” Breed said at a press conference held at City Hall on Thursday. “We don’t want to be ignored by the federal government.”

Earlier this week, San Francisco had to shut down its primary monkeypox vaccination clinic at SF General Hospital for the second time this month after it again ran out of doses, turning away long lines of people. The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) said it was expecting to receive an additional 4,220 doses of the vaccine this week, bringing the total number of vaccines received to roughly 12,000 — about a third of the supply they’ve requested from the federal government.

“We have a solution in the vaccines and we want to make sure that everyone who is requesting a vaccine gets one,” Breed said.

News of the declaration — which comes amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — was welcomed by LGBTQ+ advocates who have grown increasingly frustrated by what they call a lackluster response from the city and the federal government to a virus that can infect anyone, but has so far primarily affected communities of gay and bisexual men, and men who have sex with men.

“We know the challenges of what happens in San Francisco when we put public health on the back burner,” said Breed. “During the AIDS crisis … San Francisco was virtually left on its own to fend for itself.”

During the initial onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis in San Francisco during the 1980s, the majority of infections were among gay and bisexual men, and men who have sex with men. City Health Director Dr. Grant Colfax praised the way local care providers reacted to HIV/AIDS back then and said that response has informed the way San Francisco is responding to monkeypox now.

“As a gay man who came out and did my medical training during the peak of the AIDS epidemic,” Colfax said, “I personally and professionally experienced the indifference, the homophobia and the stigma by the medical and public health institutions in regard to prioritizing HIV prevention and care.”

“But San Francisco’s community-driven and responsive care systems were a notable exception.”

A 36-year-old man who attempted to flee to Amsterdam from San Francisco International Airport with a 16-year-old Redwood City girl he planned to marry has been sentenced to four years in prison, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office .

In June, Dylan Raymos, a San Francisco resident, was arrested in Redwood City for allegedly having unlawful sex with the girl and was ordered not to have contact with her, prosecutors said.

However, he disobeyed the order, picked up the girl at her home on July 7, and went to the airport. Prosecutors said that US Customs and Border Protection approached him on the plane and learned he was violating a court order and fleeing the country. Raymos admitted email contact and said the girl had agreed to travel with him to Portugal through Amsterdam, and he planned to marry her, prosecutors said.

The victim’s family statements gave in court that persuaded the judge to go beyond the two years initially considered and go with four years, prosecutors said. He was also ordered not to contact the victim for 10 years.
