Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced a new plan involving the California National Guard and other agencies to combat San Francisco’s fentanyl crisis.

“This is definitely a step in the right direction,” said Mayor London Breed. “I’ve reached out to our governor, I’ve reached out to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others, and indeed our governor has responded with what I believe has been tremendous support.”

This support comes with an agreement between the California Highway Patrol, the California National Guard, the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco District Attorney to work together to combat the ongoing crisis.

Cooperation between all four agencies will focus on “shutting down the fentanyl trade and disrupting the supply of the deadly drug in the city by holding accountable the operators of large-scale drug trafficking operations.”

“Help from the National Guard and from the CHP to coordinate and work with our police and prosecutors to help us address challenges surrounding our open-air drug trade, primarily in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods of San Francisco,” said Breed.

The announcement comes just two days after the governor made an unannounced stop in the tenderloin to get a first-hand look at the problem.

“We are taking action,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said. “Through this new collaborative partnership, we are providing increased resources and manpower to law enforcement agencies to address crime associated with the fentanyl crisis, hold poison traffickers to account, and increase law enforcement presence to maintain public safety and public confidence in.” to improve San Francisco.”

“We’re making arrests day in and day out but it’s really hard to hold our own and we need to get it under control and that’s what we intend to do. So we’re going to do it the San Francisco way with San Francisco values, but the help is badly needed,” said Bill Scott, San Francisco Police Commissioner.

He explained what the police are facing and reassured who is being targeted.

“I want to reassure the public that we are policing the way we policing, with dignity and respect, and working with our community,” Scott said.

Newsom said the effort would not criminalize those struggling with drug problems but would rather focus on drug suppliers and dealers.

Few details have been released as of how the new troops would be deployed and when that would begin.

Gasper and his wife Minnie Pulizzi are walking from San Diego to San Francisco to combat the sky-high gas prices.

That trek is roughly 500 miles.

Eyewitness News caught up with the couple, who are in their 80s, for a recent report on the rising gas prices.

Gasper says he can remember when gas was 25 cents a gallon in 1959.

The last time someone made such a journey was last April, when a man in a bear suit trekked from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

The man who went by Bearsun started his journey from Little Tokyo in LA County in his attempt to reach viral fame. A deputy stopped him along the way and gave him the all-clear to continue safely.

This was a bear-y unique situation. You may have seen a large teddy bear walking through town. One of our deputies got to meet the individual inside the bear & learned his goal is to complete a walk from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
The Pulizzis will likely walk a full 100 miles more than Bearsun did in his journey. The couple is 50 years old.

Here are your FOX Business Flash top headlines for March 25.

One expert is claiming that Facebook and Twitter are moving at a “slow speed” in their enforcement of Russian government propaganda and disinformation on social media.

After Russian forces bombed a maternity hospital on March 9 in Mariupol, the Russian embassy in the United Kingdom tweeted pictures from the blast captioned with the word “FAKE” over them, implying that the hospital only had military troops inside.

The embassy also targeted Ukrainian blogger Marianna Podgurskaya, stating that she “played” the role of a pregnant woman with “very realistic make-up,” that looked like blood.

“It’s the indeed pregnant [Ukraine] beauty blogger Marianna Podgurskaya,” the embassy tweeted, according to the New York Post. “She actually played roles of both pregnant women in the photos.”

Russia continues its assault on Ukraine’s major cities, including the capital Kyiv, more (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images / Getty Images)

The posts were removed from Twitter, but only after government officials in the United Kingdom expressed outrage, according to the report.

Emerson Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council, told FOX Business that this is a prime example of social media companies moving at a “slow speed” to combat propaganda coming from Russian government accounts.

“What has troubled me most is the slow speed of enforcement in cases where Russia is using its government presence or it’s continuing the existence of government accounts clearly to spread disinformation,” Brooking said. “In the case of the Russian embassy that was personally maligning a bomb victim in Mariupol, claiming that this woman was a crisis actor and was an outrageous, personally directed attack and the attack lasted for several hours on Twitter before it was removed and got significant shares.”

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Facebook and Twitter have taken actions targeting the Russian government as well as some aimed at helping keep individuals informed.

UKRAINE WAR: META SAYS IT WILL RESTRICT RUSSIAN STATE-OWNED MEDIA RT AND SPUTNIK IN EUROPE AMID INVASION

In this photo illustration the Facebook logo seen displayed on a smartphone. (Photo Illustration by Rafael Henrique/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images / Getty Images)

Twitter suspended advertisements in Russia and Ukraine on Feb. 25 in an effort to ensure “critical public safety information is elevated and ads don’t detract from it,” according to the company.

A Twitter spokesperson pointed to FOX Business to a blog post explaining their approach to the war in Ukraine, which includes de-amplifying content that isn’t associated with a risk for immediate harm but may be out of context and mislead people. If a tweet is in violation of the Twitter rules, action will be taken against it, the blog post states.

One day after Twitter made the announcement, Meta announced that it is banning Russian state media from “running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world.” Meta also announced the establishment of a “Special Operations Center to respond in real time.”

Meta also announced on Feb. 28 that it is restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the European Union.

TWITTER SUSPENDS ADVERTISEMENTS IN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE AMID WAR

Brooking, however, says that there is a difference between that type of content and press releases or government statements that are shared on Russian government accounts.

“I want to distinguish that kind of content from press releases or government statements, or the things that are typically released via these channels,” Brooking said. “That’s the sort of content, even if we find it despicable, that I think should continue to circulate in the digital space.”

( (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu / AP Images)

Brooking says that social media companies face a constant battle to maintain balance.

“For these companies, it is always a balancing act. And if Russia continues to use its official voices to engage in such personal and repugnant attacks, then I think their access to these platforms should be totally removed,” Brooking said.

All of the products and services offered by Variety are independently selected by Variety editors. However, Variety may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain verifiable data for accounting purposes.

Combat boots are back. The former fashion staple is everywhere, eEven the fictional comedy legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) of HBO’s “Hacks” can’t help but comment Hannah binder’s “chimney sweep boots” when she encounters the Gen-Z comic. Binders wears the shoes the entire time they are on screen, bloody desert heat, because those boots were made for stomping.

More of diversity

Originally relegated to the colder months, combat boots graced the feet of some of our most popular fashion connoisseurs this spring. An early adapter for the big boot, the little dress, is “Black Widow” star Florence Pugh. The actress even posted a candid shot of her wearing Prada’s classic pocket-sized leather boots on her Instagram, with the caption, “Boots to march in. Always.”

Prada is known for good cleat soles rocked by celebrities like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Victoria Beckham as part of their on-trend utility styles. The chunky plateaus are hard to miss, especially with their signature zip-up pocket strapped around the ankle. While they come at a high price, they are well worth the price given their craftsmanship and high quality leather that will last a lifetime.

But there is no shortage of cheaper options if you’re looking for a dupe that can rival House Miuccia’s. From Doc Martens to Sam Edelman to Ganni, we’ve put together the best chunky combat boots in every price range.

The story goes on

The chunky Prada boots are one of the best-selling items for the luxury fashion brand. House Miuccia has always made good cleats, helping celebrities from Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner to Victoria Beckham and now Florence Pugh perfect chic utilitarian styles. The latest iteration of the boots seen on Pugh is arguably the best yet, with its classic zipped pocket with a buckle on the side and a 2.3-inch platform heel for extra tapping. They come at a cutting-edge price tag, but the Italian leather and craftsmanship ensures they will last a lifetime – and combat boots never go out of style.

Doc Marten’s Jadon style is one of the bigger options the ubiquitous footwear company has. As a further development of their eight-hole boot, the Jadon has grooved edges, yellow seams and a heel loop as well as a chunky platform sole. These are also made with Doc Marten’s Polished Smooth Leather for added shine.

Officials with the FBI’s San Francisco Division on Thursday announced a new strategy to combat hate crimes – amid an increase in hate crimes reported against Asian Americans and Pacific islanders.

As part of the new strategy, the FBI will train more special agents to investigate hate crimes and civil rights, as well as contact community groups, religious organizations and minority groups to build trust and encourage the public to report hate crimes.

To further raise awareness and promote the reporting of hate crimes, the FBI launched a public awareness campaign on social media and through ads on Muni trains in San Francisco.

The strategy also aims to work with local and state law enforcement partners across Northern California to provide assistance and training on federal hate crime laws. In addition, law enforcement partners are encouraged to refer possible federal hate crime cases to the FBI, which in some cases could aid the investigation as the federal investigation could run in parallel with and in coordination with local law enforcement investigations.

By working with local law enforcement agencies, the FBI will provide resources such as forensic expertise and experience in identifying and demonstrating hate-based motivation even when no charges are brought against the federal agencies.

Residents who believe they may have been a victim of a hate crime are encouraged to contact the FBI’s San Francisco Division at (415) 553-7400 or https://tips.fbi.gov.

A coin is wrapped securely in a wire and is hanging on a necklace. She is a memory of 99 year old Bea McPherson for her role as one of the 224 Military Mapping Maidens during World War II. McPherson originally attended Kent State University to become a teacher. He studied elementary education with a minor in geography. But when the war broke out, her career changed course. The Army Map Service, which had lost much of its mostly male workforce to the armed forces, designed a college course to train civilian women in military cartography and offered an opening for McPherson. While she wanted to help the war effort, her mother, a widow and parents of nine children – four of whom had already served in the war – wanted her to stay home. CLICK HERE FOR THE FREE ACCUWEATHER APP “I made a decision to join the war effort as a civilian,” McPherson told AccuWeather National Reporter Emmy Victor. Upon graduation, she and 15 other women from Kent State University joined about 200 women, informally referred to as Military Mapping Maidens, who were employed by the Army Map Service as cartographers. A Kent State student, Bea Shaheen poses in a tree in front of Rockwell Hall. (Kent State University) The building where she worked was carefully painted and trees and bushes grew on the roof. There were no windows and the steps were made of wood – anything to disguise it from the air and make it almost invisible to possible air raids. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., McPherson and her staff helped draw maps of Italy, Germany, and other locations, using photos to mark houses, churches, lakes, streams, and mountains. Maps for historic battles like D-Day in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge required overtime. Professor Edna Eisen and the students Wanda Baynes, Eleanor Trapp, Betty Reider and Marian Porter. (Kent State University) When men left their jobs to join the armed forces, their absence created a vacuum in the workforce that women flocked to to fill multiple agencies, even with the predecessor of the National Weather Service. At the time of Pearl Harbor, only two women were working observing weather forecasters, said Greg Romano, director of the NWS Heritage Program and senior advisor to the NWS chief of staff. “This should give you an idea of how widespread the male approach to science was at the time,” Romano said in an interview with AccuWeather. The NWS Heritage Program documents the agency’s history and the growth of its staff after keeping some first person accounts from women who worked in the office during World War II. In 1942, the Meteorological Bureau issued an announcement accepting women into the agency as men were being recruited into the armed forces. (National Weather Service Heritage) The Meteorological Service issued an announcement in 1942 calling on qualified women to apply for jobs in the agency during the course of the war. The jobs they were hired for were primarily office workers, but the work would also overlap with meteorology. “In terms of meteorology, they were involved in taking our observations, drawing maps and chats, and speaking to pilots about flight plans and weather concerns,” Romano said. He added that much of the reason for the increasing role of the weather bureau and meteorology in general at the time was to aid air and aviation operations, which resulted in meteorological support work for these women. “They weren’t exactly meteorologists in general, but they used math and science skills that many of them had before they started working for the weather bureau,” Romano said. “They used STEM before STEM was a thing.” While World War II is widely seen as the impetus for the induction of more women into jobs and roles normally held by men, many of these women did not see themselves as pioneers at the time. Although many were well qualified for the jobs, the job had only opened up in the absence of men and many were laid off after the war when men returned or later due to downsizing. “Let’s also see that there was still a lot of resistance,” said Romano. While the reports of several women who had worked for the weather bureau at the time reported high morale and greetings in the office, they also found that they were received with reluctance and skepticism by their mostly male staff. “I felt that the seasoned male observers had some reservations about my abilities, but they were cooperative,” wrote Grace D. Harding, who worked at the Bethel, Alaska Observatory. Charlotte Schmidtke Jones, who worked in offices in Washington state and Oregon, noted that while there was a two-way support system between employees, most men greeted the women on the staff: “There were, of course, some (few) who could Can’t wait to see us leave. ”However, due to the number of women hired, there was“ very little (if any) overturning, talebearing, or mouth buzzing from anyone ”. Mary JH Williams noted that at her first stop in Reno, Nevada, she was received with “a little restraint and a lot of skepticism”. Her duties included pilot balloon observations (PIBAL), map acquisition, equipment maintenance, climatology reporting, teletype usage and radiosonde observations (RAOB), as well as adiabatic maps, which record weather observations at different heights in the atmosphere, including those observed by radiosonde equipment on weather balloons. Dorothy Hurd Chambers made observations for the Meteorological Bureau at Denver Stapleton International Airport, sending ceiling and radiosonde balloons every six hours, making observations and telexing encrypted messages. Although she wrote that there was no discrimination she faced, she noted “scary times” when communicating with staff at the airport. Dorothy Chambers (left) and another member of the Meteorological Office draw weather maps from teletype reports. (Kent State University) “There were no lows, but some scary times when we observers had to tell the tower that they needed to move planes to another location or go to instrument landing when the ceiling or visibility was low,” wrote Chambers. “The Tower men didn’t like us ‘young girls’ telling them what to do. But we didn’t have any crashes in Denver anyway.” The resistance persisted even after the war. “While World War II and the women who worked in the Meteorological Office during World War II certainly opened many doors, there were still many forces trying to exclude women,” said Romano. He reported that he had looked through the meteorological bureau’s themed articles and found that women were not specifically mentioned until the early 1970s. However, World War II had allowed women to get their foot in the door. “I think if you spoke to many women who are currently working in the weather department or in meteorology in general, many would thank these women as pioneers who opened these doors to do this today,” Romano said. “Still, I don’t think any of these women thought they were pioneers based on what they wrote.” Chambers, one of the many women whose legacy is engraved on the National Weather Service records, at least knew she was making history. “We girls have shown the world that ‘men’s work’ can also be women’s work,” she wrote. “It has always been a great satisfaction to have the privilege of being part of aviation history.” Robert Cardillo, director of the NGA, presents the cartographers Dina (Morelli) Kennedy and Bea McPherson with a plaque commemorating the admission of the Military Mapping Maidens to the Geospatial Intelligence Hall of Fame. This souvenir photo contains an inscription from the director who wrote: “Congratulations, Bea-you rightly stole the show!” (Kent State) It would be about 70 years after the war for McPherson to see recognition for her work during World War II. “I never knew I was a pioneer,” she said. “I only knew it after 73 years.” McPherson has recently received many awards for her service, including an NGA coin presented to her in 2014 by Letitia Long, then director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the first woman to head the agency. In 2016 she was inducted into the NGA Hall of Fame and addressed the guests as a representative of the 224 Military Mapping Maidens when they presented her with a framed award declaring her a pioneer. At the end of her speech, she was surprised by a standing ovation. Additional reporting from Emmy Victor.
