San Francisco may have a 9.5-point advantage coming into the game, but the Cleveland Browns have the league’s top-ranked offense.

Will today’s matchup be another blowout win for the 49ers? Or will the Cleveland Browns score an upset? You’ll have to watch today’s game to find out.

Watch local NFL football live with a digital HDTV antenna

                Amazon

If you’re cutting the cord to your cable company, you’re not alone; in fact, you are in luck. You can still watch the NFL on TV with an affordable indoor antenna, which pulls in local over-the-air HDYC channels such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and PBS. Here’s the kicker: There’s no monthly charge.

Anyone living in partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or first-floor apartments), a digital TV antenna may not pick up a good signal – or any signal at all. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna provides a seriously inexpensive way to watch college football without paying a staggering monthly fee. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable (or your cable company gets in a squabble with a network).

This amplified HDTV antenna, claims to have a 50-mile range and offers 36 channels. It’s rated 4.0 stars by Amazon reviewers.

Said one Amazon customer, “When the price of this antenna dropped to $50, it was competitively priced with what you would find on the shelves at your local Radio Shack. If you’re considering this product, you’re probably already questioning your cable television bill and are looking around for a cheap way to get the Big 3 plus Fox and PBS. This antenna delivered that for us right out of the box.”

Watch the 49ers vs. Browns game on your phone with NFL+

If you want to catch the game on your phone — and all the amazing football ahead this season — check out NFL+. The premium streaming service, starting at $40 per year (or $7 per month), offers access to NFL Network. And yes, that includes games being broadcast out-of-market. To boost your NFL experience even further, you can upgrade to NFL+ Premium with NFL RedZone and watch up to eight NFL games simultaneously. A seven-day, free trial is available.

Top features of NFL+:

You get access to all NFL preseason games, including those that are out of market.

NFL+ lets you watch stream local and primetime regular season games on your phone or tablet, but not your TV.

Includes the NFL Network (and NFL RedZone with NFL+ Premium), so it’s a good option for those who are looking to stream football on the go.

Will Dak get to the Super Bowl (or close)? The Dallas Cowboys were off to a splashy 2023 season start, 3-1 coming into Week 5. QB Dak Prescott promised to throw less picks than last season when he led the league for picks thrown. He’s at four this season. Cowboys fans hope he makes good on his promise. But Dak’s bigger focus is taking the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. Judging by the Cowboys’ performance in Week 5, getting past the mighty San Francisco 49ers this season is going to be tough. But then again, it is for everybody.

Taylor Swift is the only thing bigger than the NFL: While Swifties were quick to ‘ship Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift after the Eras Tour star showed up at Arrowhead Stadium during the Kansas City Chiefs Week 3 game against the Chicago Bears, Tay Tay herself seems all-in on her budding romance with the Chiefs superstar tight end. The Taylor-effect on the NFL has been massive, from Kelce gaining over half-a-million new Instagram followers in a day, to the NFL finding an entirely new fan base in Taylor-loving younger women — a coveted audience for the league. The NFL has fully embraced the league’s newest ambassador, friendship bracelets and all, much to the chagrin of Kelce who admitted on his podcast the league has “gone too far” with its Swelce/Kelswift coverage.

That 49ers defense is dangerous: Brock Purdy silenced naysayers last season when he took over after both QBs Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries. Coach Shanahan traded Lance and gave Purdy the starting job this season with little trepidation that the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft had what it takes. Shanahan’s decision has paid off five weeks in, the team is undefeated and Purdy shows full command of the team. But the 49ers Nick Bosa-led defense is what could take this team to the Super Bowl. The Niners came into Week 5 one of two undefeated teams remaining with no sign of slowing down.

*Above video shows the long list of Browns quarterbacks who played in a game for the Browns since the franchise returned to the league in 1999*

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Breezy conditions greeted players for the start of the Cleveland Browns game against the San Francisco 49ers at Cleveland Browns Stadium, and it was a sloppy and physical game from the get-go.

Mary Lou Retton’s family: Updates her health condition

Fox 8’s P.J. Ziegler reported the teams had less than a friendly greeting right before the game started.

49ers easily marched down the field on the Browns going 84 yards in just five plays to take an early 7-0 lead after a TD run by Christian McCaffery

P.J. Walker threw an interception on his first drive ever for the Browns. But Cleveland’s defense shut down the 49ers on San Fran’s next drive as it started to rain in the first quarter.

Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins missed a 47-yard field goal. 49ers led 7-0 after the first quarter.

San Fran added to their lead with a 25-yard field goal and are up on the Browns 10-0 in the 2nd quarter.

Walker hit Amari Cooper for a 58-yard pass and the Browns are in San Fran territory with seven minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Kareem Hunt scores on a 16-yard TD run as the Browns pull closer trailing the 49ers 10-7.

San Fran’s star wide receiver Deebo Samuel did not returned to the game after leaving the field with an apparent shoulder injury in the 1st quarter.

The 49ers lead Browns 10-7 at the half which featured hard-hitting and stubborn defenses by both teams.

Rolling into the third quarter, the Cleveland Browns were able to tie the game with a nice 42-yard field goal from Hopkins. And we’ve got a whole new ballgame. More good news came for the Browns in the third quarter with Martin Emerson Jr. picking off Brock Purdy moving the ball into 49ers territory.

While that pick didn’t lead to much for the Browns, the team was able to take the lead for the first time in the game a little bit later, with Hopkins making another 40-plus-yard kick right through the uprights, moving the score to 13-10.

The 49ers are now without RB Christian McCaffrey with an oblique injury, along with Deebo Samuel already out.

And into the fourth quarter, with an interception by the 49ers, the team was able to capitalize on it with one play from the 10-yard line. With a good kick, the West Coast team leapt back in front 17-13.

Hopkins steps up again when the Browns offense couldn’t get down the field the way they wanted. His 50-yard field goal moved the score to 17-16.

The wild game continued with multiple big penalties for the 49ers, but the Browns weren’t able to score a touchdown. Thankfully, Hopkins came through once again, moving the score to 19-17.

With the 49ers unable to make a good kick (or touchdown) in the end zone, the Cleveland Browns make the big upset Sunday.

This past season was yet another disappointment for the Cleveland Browns as they finished 7-10. Deshaun Watson was suspended for the first 11 games, so the results might’ve been different had he been out on the field for the entire season.

Watson is going to be under center for all 17 games this season barring an injury, which should give the team a confidence boost and tip the scale in the Browns direction.

In order for Watson to be the difference maker that Cleveland wants him to be, he’s got to be in sync with head coach Kevin Stefanski as well as offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. Stefanski and Van Pelt need to develop an offense that fits Watson’s skill set so that he’s in the best position to lead the Browns to wins.

Over the past few seasons, the Browns have been a very run-heavy team (the 2021 Browns were almost identical to the 2019 49ers), but that could be because Stefanski felt limited in what offensive plays he could run with Baker Mayfield as his quarterback. Now that Watson is the quarterback, the playbook should open up and be more diverse.

Recently, there have been murmurings that free agent wide receiver Deandre Hopkins could sign with the Browns. Adding Hopkins to the offense would give Stefanski, Van Pelt, and Watson that go-to option in tight ball games.

Hopkins and Watson played together in Houston, and they’re both Clemson alumni. If the Browns were to sign Hopkins, he would slide in as the No. 1 wide receiver, pushing Amari Cooper down to No. 2 and Donovan Peoples-Jones down to the No. 3 wide position.

Hopkins, Cooper, and Peoples-Jones have different, complementary skill sets which Watson could utilize when it comes to facing certain opponents this season. For example, when the Browns host the 49ers in Week 6, that could be a matchup that is tailored to Cooper, or when the Browns visit the Broncos in Week 12, that could be a matchup that is tailored to Hopkins (again, this is contingent on Hopkins actually signing with the Browns).

Running back Nick Chubb and tight end David Njoku would play into a dynamic offense, offering the Browns other matchup advantages throughout the season.

Last season, from Week 4 to Week 7, the Browns lost four consecutive games against the Falcons, Chargers, Patriots, and Ravens. Three of those four games went right down to the wire and looked winnable for the Browns. They lost 23-20 in Atlanta, 30-28 at home against the Chargers, and 23-20 in Baltimore.

In those three games, it was a mixture of bad coaching decisions, defensive lapses, and head-scratching offensive plays that cost the Browns three victories. If Cleveland had won those three games, they would’ve finished the season with a winning record at 10-7, and tied with the Ravens and Chargers in the AFC Standings. Since the Browns rarely seem to finish with a winning record, a winning season could have taken some of the pressure off of Watson as he enters his first full season as the starting quarterback.

This season, the Browns will be facing the AFC South, which means they’ll host the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars and they’ll visit the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans (Watson’s old team). The last time Cleveland faced the AFC South was in 2020, the same year the Browns narrowly lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round.

That year, Cleveland swept all four games against the Colts, Texans, Jaguars, and Titans. Watson knows the AFC South very well, but he still needs the right personnel and play-calling to succeed this season. The Browns will look to accomplish a sweep this season with Watson at the control. That should be feasible given that no team in the AFC South finished with more than nine wins.

Cleveland will also face the NFC West this upcoming season, meaning they’ll host the 49ers and Cardinals and head out on the road to face the Seahawks and Rams. In 2019, the Browns went 0-4 against the NFC West, so they’ll look for a reverse in fortune this season. The games at home against the Rams and Seahawks were right there, begging for the Browns to win them, but Cleveland couldn’t pull it off.

Had Watson been the QB in 2019, rather than Baker Mayfield, they might’ve won those games. The NFC West could be a dangerous division since San Francisco and Seattle are both expected to be playoff contenders and the Rams look to stay healthy and bounce back. So if the Browns want to feel good about their performance against the NFC West, they at least need to split the season series.

The last time Watson faced the Seahawks in Seattle was back in Week 8 of the 2017 season when he and then Seattle QB Russell Wilson (who’s now with the Broncos) put on a shootout. Watson was 19-30 for 402 yards and four touchdowns, but he also threw three interceptions.

Wilson was 26-41 for 452 yards and four touchdowns, but he had one interception. Wilson and the Seahawks narrowly edged out Watson and the Texans 41-38. When the Browns visit the Seahawks in Week 8 during Halloween weekend, Watson won’t be intimidated by the “12th man” at Lumnen Field. Will Watson and the Browns have a shootout with Geno Smith and the Seahawks this season?

Cleveland made the huge trade with the Texans to bring in Watson because they felt like they were at the very least a playoff contender. DW doesn’t have to worry about any off-field drama this season, so he can devote all of his attention to fully learning an expanded playbook and developing chemistry with the skill players around him (whether that includes Hopkins or not remains to be seen).

The Browns hope that he’s the missing piece that puts them back into contention this season and moving forward.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Manager Terry Francona calls it playing “clean baseball.” In other words, playing baseball without mistakes.

He knew that would be a challenge at times this season with the youngest roster in the big leagues. One of those challenges arrived Saturday night in the Guardians’ 4-2 loss to the Giants at Progressive Field.

In the eighth inning, with the score tied, 2-2, a botched double play and a wild pitch allowed the Giants to score twice against Nick Sandlin (0-1) on the way to their fourth straight win.

Brandon Belt started the eighth with an infield hit to third. First baseman Owen Miller put a glove on Jose Ramirez’s throw, but Belt’s hand knocked the ball loose. Sandlin struck out Darin Ruf, but allowed a single to Austin Slater and walked Brandon Crawford to load the bases.

Wilmer Flores sent a hard grounder to Ernie Clement at second. Clement made a nice stop and threw to Amed Rosario for the force at second, but Miller was late getting to first and Rosario had to double pump. The delay allowed Flores to be safe and belt to score for a 3-2 lead. Sandlin followed with a wild pitch that skipped past rookie catcher Bryan Lavastida as Slater scored for a 4-2 edge.

Dominic Leone (1-0), who pitched for Cleveland in 2020, pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Jake McGee pitched the ninth for his first save of the season, allowing the first two batters to reach base. After Clement bounced into a force at second, McGee struck out pinch hitter Oscar Mercado with runners on the corners and then induced a bouncer to the mound from Myles Straw to end the game.

On the double play that wasn’t turned, Miller was on his way to the middle of the diamond to take the cutoff throw from center field because he anticipated the ball was getting through. When Clement gloved the ball, Miller had to backtrack to the bag.

“We talked to him about it,” Francona said. “I want to make sure we’re just not beating him over the head with it. We’re moving him around and we just explained, ‘Hey, slow down. Think about what your priorities are.’ Those are things that are going to happen, hopefully not every night, with youth. There is going to be some growing pains at times.”

Miller said he used the wrong footwork on the play. There is nothing wrong with what he’s doing at the plate. He went 2-for-2 with two walks and is leading the AL with a .560 (14-for-25) batting average.

“My footwork got mixed up and I took a wrong step,” said Miller. “It just took me a little bit longer to get back to the base.”

As for his success at the plate, Miller said, “I always like to say, ‘Don’t let early numbers foot you good or bad.’ I just try to keep a level head and get to work each day.”

The Guardians’ feast-or-famine offense is once again on a diet of bread and water. They scored one run in their first two games of the season, 44 runs in the next four and three in losses to the Giants on Friday and Saturday nights.

Straw pulled the Guardians into a 2-2 tie in the seventh with a double off the wall in left. Miller opened the inning with a double. Miller leads the AL with seven doubles and eight extra-base hits.

Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani retired the next two batters, but Straw doubled to erase San Francisco’s 2-1 lead. When the ball left the bat, it appeared Straw may have homered off DeSclafani, but a strong wind blowing in from left field kept the ball in the park.

San Francisco’s pitchers entered the game limiting the opposition to a .141 batting average with two out.

The Guardians loaded the bases in the sixth as Jarlin Garcia walked Josh Naylor and Miller with two out. The inning ended when pinch-hitter Clement grounded into a force out at second.

Straw opened the game with a triple down the left field line. He was called out by third-base umpire Paul Emmel, but the Guardians challenged and the call was overturned to give Straw his first triple of the season. Steven Kwan went down on a shallow fly ball to left, but Jose Ramirez sent a sacrifice fly to center to score Straw for a 1-0 lead. It was Ramirez’s AL-leading 15th RBI.

Cal Quantrill protected the lead through four innings, but he threw a lot of pitches to do so. In the fifth, following a one-out single by Thairo Estrada, Steven Duggan doubled off the wall in left to put runners on second and third. The double came on Quantrill’s 79th pitch.

He came back to strike out Joey Bart on a 3-2 pitch, but walked Mike Yastrzemski to load the bases. Lefty Logan Allen relieved to face lefty Brandon Belt, but Belt singled through the middle for a 2-1 lead — it was the first base hit in 23 at-bats for Belt against Cleveland. Allen stopped the Giants right there as Darin Ruf went down on a fly ball to right.

Quantrill allowed two runs on two hits in 4 2/3 innings. He throws 91 pitches, striking out two and walking three.

about IFTTT

Note from Zennie62Media and OaklandNewsNow.com: This video blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media, Inc. network for video blogging systems for mobile media that was launched in June 2018 by Zennie62Media, Inc .s new and innovative approach to news media production. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a YouTube channel. When the YouTube video channel News 5 Cleveland uploads a video, it is automatically uploaded to the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62’s own social media pages and formatted automatically. The overall goal here is, in addition to our smartphone-enabled real-time reporting of news, interviews, observations and events anywhere in the world and within seconds, not hours – the use of the existing YouTube social graphic on any topic in the world. Now messages are reported with the smartphone and also by advertising current content on YouTube: There is no need for heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop or a camera team to film what is already on YouTube. The secondary goal is faster and very inexpensive production and distribution of media content. We found that there is a discrepancy between post length and time to product and revenue generated. This means that the problem is much smaller, but by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system’s network coding and is looking for interested content and media technology partners.

Debate over development in the Cleveland National Forest is raging again, the latest in a long history of struggles about land use in an area that stretches across San Diego, Orange and Riverside counties.

A proposal that will eventually go before the San Diego County Board of Supervisors is inflaming tensions between supporters of denser construction and conservationists, who for more than 100 years have viewed the Cleveland forest as the last frontier in preserving open space in the region.

The measure would amend the county’s general plan to allow more building on thousands of privately held acres within the national forest. The number of dwellings permitted on these properties would increase from about 4,300 to roughly 6,250. Under a citizens’ initiative that expired in 2010, the minimum lot size for a private parcel in the forest was 40 acres. No changes have been approved since.

“Planning the future landscape of rural East County is often a balancing act involving economic growth, community needs and the preservation of our backcountry character,” Supervisor Dianne Jacob, whose District 2 includes much of the region in question, said in a statement. “I’ll weigh these factors, along with any other input I get, before making a decision.”

Over the decades, urban sprawl in the county has bulldozed natural landscapes and reduced habitat for many plants and animals. It has also provided affordable homes for families and allowed people to enjoy rural living a relatively short drive away from grocery stores, hospitals and town centers.

Long before government restrictions came into place, fur traders, loggers, ranchers and miners dramatically affected the backcountry. Wildfires were attributed to overgrazed lands, and mining of gold and other precious metals threatened to pollute rivers and creeks.

By the late 1880s, government officials recognized the need to better manage the forest, specifically to safeguard sources of drinking water there. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt consolidated existing protected lands and created the Cleveland National Forest.

Once spanning nearly 2 million acres, the forest now covers about 440,000 acres, stretching in a patchwork from state Route 94 in San Diego to state Route 91 in Orange County. Regulations allow for a variety of recreational uses in designated areas, including hiking, camping and off-roading. The forest also hosts a number of commercial uses, such as cellphone towers and electric utility lines.

But for the most part, the territory is left as open space and natural habitat.

In the early 1990s, a group of backcountry environmentalists successfully spearheaded the Forest Conservation Initiative, which limited development on more than 71,000 acres of privately held land within the national forest.

When the measure sunset in 2010, elected county officials had been dealing for more than a decade with disgruntled residents who wanted the option to subdivide their parcels so they could build more structures on them. In response, county leaders are moving forward with a proposal to update the zoning for private lands within the forest.

With more than half of the plan’s envisioned higher density concentrated just east of the unincorporated town of Alpine, efforts have in part responded to residents who feel squeezed by urban development on the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians reservation.

As the reservation has built out its casino, nearby homeowners have lamented the loss of a once-quiet lifestyle. Perhaps ironically, many residents now believe their best hope to escape the lights, noise and ongoing construction in the area may be to allow increased density so they can offload land to commercial developers.

Leaders of the tribe declined to comment for this story.

Two characters central to this rezoning fight, Duncan McFetridge and Larry Freeland, offer unique perspectives on differing priorities in the backcountry. Both moved to East County decades ago, attracted by the area’s natural beauty. Now the land-use proposal has set them on divergent paths.

Duncan McFetridge, a woodworker in Descanso, is a major voice for backcountry conservation.

                  — Peggy Peattie / San Diego Union-Tribune

DUNCAN MCFETRIDGE

When Duncan McFetridge moved to rural East County about 30 years ago, he had little idea that he’d become one of the region’s foremost advocates for open space.

Over the years, the carpenter by trade and lifelong student of philosophy has taken on many of the county’s most powerful government planning agencies, launching two nonprofits and winning a series of legal battles that have curbed urban sprawl.

Kicking off this second career as a conservationist, McFetridge championed a ballot measure in the early ’90s called the Forest Conservation Initiative, which dramatically curtailed development on private lands within the Cleveland National Forest.

In a move that would presage his dedication to hard-nosed environmentalism, he took out a mortgage on his bucolic Descanso home to help fund the effort. In later campaigns, he would spend as much as half a million dollars from an inheritance to try to contain urban development.

“I’m in love with the beautiful,” said McFetridge, sitting in his dining room-office with walls seemingly made of books. “Money, for whatever reason, it’s meaningless to me.

“Other foundations all focus on fundraising. While they’re out fighting for grants, guess what we’re doing here? We’re literally on the battlefield.”

The Forest Conservation Initiative’s stipulations sunset in 2010, and county officials have since proposed upzoning certain areas inside the national forest. The change would mark the end of an era for those who’ve toiled to limit development in the backcountry.

“The forest initiative was the best thing that ever happened,” said Jeff Rozendal, initially a Descanso and now San Diego-based chimney sweep who partnered with McFetridge on the initiative and other campaigns. “It’s the only thing that has worked. You keep politicians out of it, and you’ve got a chance to preserve things.”

McFetridge and his allies waged two other campaigns related to preservation of the forest, but those measures failed at the ballot box.

Today, he vows to fight the county’s upzoning plan to the end. Asked if he would file a lawsuit to block the proposed density increases, the Descanso woodworker responded without hesitation in a high-pitched tone: “Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.”

He’d have to scrape together the funds. His nonprofits typically generate less than $50,000 a year in revenue, with his and one other paid staff member’s modest salaries often getting cannibalized by the groups’ expenses.

“I’m adorned, as the Chinese say, with poverty,” McFetridge said, sipping well water out of a wine glass.

The usually lean years have alternated with big fundraising efforts for specific campaigns, such as in the early 2000s when he and others pushed in vain for a ballot measure that would’ve create a so-called “urban-growth boundary.”

McFetridge said this model of operating on a shoestring budget hasn’t held him back. Rather, he said, refusing to take money from government agencies helps preserve the ideological pureness of his campaigns.

“All these groups beg for grants, and then they have ties,” he said. “And I found out very quickly that money is rotten here. I see it everywhere. Everyone gets compromised. So I said f— you people. I’m going to be free.”

At 75 with a white beard and a ponytail, he flutters about his property talking metaphysically about everything from the Buddha-like state of his Guinea hens to an impressive sculpture of a frog he carved from an enormous boulder on a hill in his backyard.

He adores his forest, but he remarks that he’s also a “connoisseur of cities.” He especially admires Paris, Seattle and San Francisco. He thinks the city of San Diego has potential, but he’s rather blunt with his assessment of its current state.

“Plato says the most beautiful thing on the face of this earth is a well-run city because it is the work of the city to educate the citizens,” he said. “Here we take a city and make it a market place to make the citizens worse.”

This all translates back to his distrust of many local government officials. Specifically, he fears the county’s plan for upzoning private lands within the national forest is harbinger for much unseen development to come.

Under the current proposal, more than half of the increased density allowed would be contained in an area east of Alpine. As the Viejas tribe has built out a casino and mall, local residents have asked that their properties be rezoned to conform to this adjacent urbanization.

McFetridge said he has sympathy for some residents who have seen their rural setting succumb to increased traffic and noise from ongoing construction. But he worries the county’s proposal sets a dangerous precedent for future upzoning throughout the backcountry.

If the proposal goes through, zoning in the area outside of Alpine wouldn’t be set in stone. Under a yet-to-be-funded study, county planners are expected to assess whether further density would be needed in the area to help pay for basic services such as new roads and water and sewer pipes.

Asked how significant the county’s plan would be for San Diego’s woodland areas, McFetridge responded rather solemnly with a laconic summation: “Urbanization is in conflict with forest values.”

Forest at the forefront

Leading the push against a proposal to increase development in parts of the Cleveland National Forest is just the latest crusade for Descanso resident Duncan McFetridge and two nonprofit groups he co-founded.

Save Our Forest and Ranchlands and the Cleveland National Forest Foundation are hardly household names in San Diego County. But during the past two decades, they have played a central role in controversies ranging from backcountry conservation to climate change to the environmental effects of widening Interstate 5.

Here’s a look at the issues they’ve taken on:

1990: Save Our Forest and Ranchlands, or SOFAR, was launched by McFetridge and nearly a dozen of his like-minded neighbors. The group’s mission is to prevent efforts by San Diego County to allow development on land in and around the Cleveland National Forest.

1992: SOFAR blocked in court a county zoning update for the Central Mountain area of East County, which is within the Cleveland National Forest and Cuyamaca State Park. A developer had proposed to build a 125-home community on more than 700 acres known as Roberts Ranch. Eventually, the forest service bought the ranch land.

1993: A citizen-approved ballot measure called the Forest Conservation Initiative, drafted by McFetridge and SOFAR, changed the minimum lot size on private lands within the Cleveland forest but outside of backcountry towns from as little as four acres to 40. McFetridge took out a mortgage on his home to pay for signature gatherers.

1995: McFetridge and others created the Cleveland National Forest Foundation, which aims to preserve open space in the forest.

1996: SOFAR prevailed in a lawsuit that forced the county to implement minimum lot sizes on nearly 200,000 acres of agricultural preserve lands. Following the ruling, the group continued to wrangle with the county for several years over the proper density for those lands.

1997: SOFAR stopped two developments in court, including a project that could have cut off the last mountain-lion corridors connecting the Santa Rosa Mountain Range in Orange County and Palomar Mountain in San Diego County. With support from other groups, SOFAR also halted a sizable RV park planned for Descanso.

1998: SOFAR failed to win passage of a ballot measure called the Rural Heritage and Watershed Initiative, which would have created an urban-growth boundary and increased minimum lot sizes in some unincorporated areas to 40 or 80 acres.

2002: SOFAR reached an agreement with the county for zoning on roughly 200,000 acres of agricultural preserve lands that called for a 40-acre minimum lot size. The state attorney general at the time, Bill Lockyer, had joined the lawsuit in support of SOFAR.

2004: For the second time, SOFAR failed to get voters to approve a ballot measure restricting development on thousands of acres of unincorporated land. The Rural Lands Initiative would have imposed minimum lot sizes of 40, 80 or 160 acres on nearly 700,000 acres in the county.

2007: After threatening litigation, SOFAR reached a settlement agreement with the city of San Diego over its Downtown Mobility Plan, which lays out the transportation plan for the city’s urban core. McFetridge and others argued that the plan needed to focus more heavily on transit, bicycle and pedestrian options.

2011: The Forest Conservation Initiative sunset, prompting county officials to begin looking at updating land-use designations for more than 71,000 acres of private lands within the Cleveland National Forest.

2012: The Cleveland National Forest Foundation prevailed in a lawsuit against the San Diego Association of Governments concerning the municipal planning agency’s regional transportation plan for the county. The foundation said the agency failed to properly account for state-mandated reductions to greenhouse gases. The case is now pending at the California Supreme Court and is expected to have broad implications.

2013: The foundation sued Caltrans over its proposed expansion of the Interstate 5 corridor from La Jolla to Camp Pendleton, which would add four new express lanes. The case is expected to yield a settlement this year.

2016: The foundation has threatened to sue the county over its proposed upzoning of thousands of acres of private lands within the Cleveland National Forest.

                  — Peggy Peattie / San Diego Union-Tribune

LARRY FREELAND

When Larry Freeland bought a small patch of land just east of Alpine about 37 years ago, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians’ reservation down the road didn’t make much noise.

A decade later, the native tribe put in a bingo parlor, and traffic quickly started to pick up along the road that Freeland lives on.

Today, the Viejas reservation features a large casino, an outlet mall, an outdoor food court and several 24-hour parking lots. Cars and buses routinely roar up and down the once-quite country road just north of Interstate 8.

“You got car alarms going all night long and people who sit in their cars and turn their bump-bump music up,” the 62-year-old said. “I mean, it’s not a residential area anymore. It really isn’t.”

Freeland’s not your typical cranky homeowner frustrated with loud neighbors. In fact, he’s not bitter with the tribe at all. He even said he voted for the statewide ballot proposition in 2000 that allowed Indian gaming to expand.

“They were wrongly treated in history, so I supported them,” he said. “What can you do?”

Still, Freeland and others in the area are desperate to change their situation. Since the 1990s, the county of San Diego has faced pressure from landowners like him to allow greater development that would fit with the commercial growth on the reservation.

“It would hedge our bet in the future about being able to get a reasonable price for the property,” said Jim Phillips, a 61-year-old homeowner who lives across the street from the casino’s parking lots. “The property is no longer desirable for someone to live and raise a family.”

For a long time, the county’s hands were tied. The folks east of Alpine live within the boundary of the Cleveland National Forest, where a citizen’s initiative had for nearly a decade capped development to one lot for at least every 40 acres.

With long hair and a graying handlebar mustache, Freeland’s blue eyes sparkle from under a cowboy hat as he explains how he would’ve already fled the area if he could have found someone to buy his property for the right price.

“Worst-case scenario, now that the tribe’s this far out, I take a big loss and I get the heck out of here,” he said.

On roughly 4.5 acres, Freeland and his wife own a home as well as a western-style novelty shop called the Lost Trails Trading Post. The funky little store sells clothes, hats, old movie posters and other period-appropriate accoutrement. Next to the store, Freeland has built three 1820s-style tent cabins that are open for public viewing.

When Freeland’s not hawking cowboy merchandise or giving tours of his cabins, he’s working as an actor in small-budget western movies and television shows. Recently he played Wild Bill Hickok, he explains proudly, adding that he’s also performed with a Lakeside-based performance group called The Hole in the Wall Gang.

While the increased traffic from the casino and mall has brought him a few more customers, he’d have to expand his commercial business or sell to a developer to really capitalize on the growth — neither of which are a viable options unless the county updates the land use for the area.

“I had one guy very interested, but everyone wanted to see the final zoning,” he said. “Developers want to do something here.”

After the Forest Conservation Initiative sunset in 2010, the county proceeded with a plan to rezone thousands of acres within the forest. The proposal would specifically permit mixed-use commercial development east of the Viejas reservation and up to one residential lot per acre on lands south of I-8.

This could be a bonanza for homeowners in the region, especially those willing to sell to their property. For those who stay on, density could bring amenities such as municipal water and sewer lines from Alpine, another fire station and a high school.

“It gives us a little (security) if we ever want to sell in the future,” said Jim Thomson, 66, who moved to the area in 1999 and has six children. “Nobody wants to buy a house across from all this excitement.”

But it’s far from a done deal. The proposal has infuriated conservationists, who have threatened to challenge the zoning changes in court — fearing a slippery slope of development in years to come.

If Freeland can sell his property, he said he would consider moving up to Grass Valley in Northern California and retire near his two children. But he’s not ruling out enlarging his commercial enterprise here.

“The only way to protect myself, my property rights, my monetary investment, is to turn it commercial,” he said.

The Cleveland Indians’ hopes for the off-season darken to a flickering light in the darkness that soon dies. But even if their chances for the playoffs are hanging by the thinnest threads, the last two months of the season will definitely be particularly interesting.

Given the timely trades, and certainly the tough squad decisions that will have to be made in 2022, Cleveland is giving its young players ample time to show what they can do at the majors.

One of the most interesting position battles currently taking place is that for the second base, thanks to Cesar Hernandez’s trade with the Chicago White Sox.

Here are the current options the Indians have for the future:

Owen Miller

It was hard for Miller to even get close to the hot track he had at Triple-A Columbus that earned him a reputation this season. But then again, Miller hasn’t had any regular at-bats at all, so it’s impossible to make a real judgment of him. Miller also plays first base, which really works in his favor, because that too remains a huge question mark for the team that is moving forward. He currently carries an average of .131 in 61 AT bats.

Ernie Clement

Clement feels a lot like Miller in that he’s making solid contact and not crossing out a lot, but not necessarily going to show a lot of pop, which isn’t the most important thing in the world for a second baseman. He has what it takes to fill a potential super-utility role between second base, shortstop and the outfield, which will help his cause in the long run. He’ll find plenty of at-bats in the next two months – it’s time they counted.

Yu Chang

Unfortunately, Yu Chang just can’t stay in the majors, in part because of his minor division options that allow the Indians to move him freely up and down when needed. At some point he will be back and fight for a supply place in the infield. As Cleveland continues to drop out of the playoff race, the team could give third baseman Jose Ramirez a break here and there, which also opens up more regular at-bats for Chang. He beats .185 / .219 / .300 with two home runs and 16 RBIs in 130 at-bats with Cleveland this season.

Amed Rosario

Rosario was a pleasant surprise on the record this season, hitting 0.268 / .313 / .385 with six homers, 30 RBIs and a 90 WRC +. But his short stop defense really left a lot to be desired with -5 outs above average (OAA), placing him at the bottom of all short stops in the majors. That won’t be sustainable and luckily for the Indians they have a number of better defensive options along the way. Rosario will likely keep his place on the squad through – you guessed it – a utility role that could include the outfield.

Andrés Gimenez

Gimenez opened the season in Cleveland but was eventually sent back to Triple-A Columbus after a dismal .179 / .226 / .308 line with two home runs and five RBIs in 78 at-bats. Since his release, 22-year-old Gimenez has produced a solid .285 / .342 / .510 line with ten home runs and 31 RBIs in 200 at-bats. His return to the big league club is imminent and his presence will be a huge defensive upgrade at Shortstop, but he may see time in second. Finally, Gabriel Arias is also waiting in Columbus …

Gabriel Arias placeholder image

Speaking of Arias, the 21-year-old phenomenon is knocking on the door, although given its age, it wouldn’t be surprising if Cleveland waited until 2022 to make its big-league debut. In 272 AT bats with Columbus, Arias beats .276 / .355 / .441 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs. In a perfect world, Arias will give a straight answer on the shortstop, potentially putting Gimenez in second place, and giving Cleveland an elite defense in the middle, especially if you include the newly acquired Myles Straw in the middle.

For now, however, the second base remains a wide-open competition with many guys vying for at-bats. During the last two months of the season, the Indians will take a long look at the potential future of the position and ideally someone will face the situation. All of these players apparently occupy 40-man squad spots, so Cleveland certainly hopes to get some definitive answers by 2022.

The competition ensures equal consideration through strictly controlled blind tastings. The judges do not receive any information about the manufacturer or the price. Based on the tasting alone, you determine which entries deserve a gold, silver or bronze medal. Only those entries that receive a gold medal from all judges on a jury will receive a double gold award.

In 2009, Tom Lix, founder and CEO, set out to make bourbon and whiskey differently with technology. The first bottles of Cleveland whiskey hit the shelves in 2013 and the Cleveland Underground® series was born in 2015. “Accelerating the aging process was just the first step in using technology to make whiskey differently.” Tom Lix said: “Bigger and better ways are to make whiskeys with woods other than oak and the underground whiskeys finished with black cherry wood and wheat Penny bourbon are good examples of this. ”

Today Cleveland Whiskey is moving to a larger facility in the heart of Cleveland. The new space on the Cuyahoga River in the southern apartments is ten times larger than the current space and allows them to significantly increase production. Best of all, the expansion plans include a branded distillery experience that will be a must-see in the area City of Cleveland.

“Our mission is simple: make good whiskey every day and do the right thing. We lived that last year by making hand sanitizer and donating it to the frontline workers in our community, including 51,000 healthcare workers Cleveland Clinic, Nursing Homes, Cuyahoga County Police, fire and rescue services and more. The awards show that we have fulfilled the other part of our promise. We also made good whiskey every day, “he said Tom Lix, Founder and CEO of the company.

About Cleveland Whiskey
