While working as a corporate attorney in San Francisco, Clara Jung had an epiphany: She much preferred decorating her law school apartment to actually putting her law degree to use. “I decided that life was too long to continue that career,” says Jung, who subsequently quit, took a year to figure things out, and ultimately founded a design firm, Banner Day Interiors. In the early days, it was her clients who kept her going: “There is so much talent out there, and it always thrills me that people really want to work with us,” she admits. “Sometimes I second-guessed my life change—I used to wear suits every day and appear before judges. It was a strong change when I was assembling furniture on my own for an installation. Yet in some ways, I’m glad I had to hustle and work so hard. I never take anything for granted, and that drive still sustains me today.”

While Jung considers herself “a fairly risk-averse person—hence the detour into law,” she swiftly blossomed into a fearless designer once planted in the right field. “We love incorporating pops of color and whimsical elements, and there is a brightness to our work which I openly embrace,” she says of the work her team is doing at Banner Day Interiors. “We do take some “risks,” especially with color and wallpaper. But is it really a risk when those unexpected elements bring you so much joy? I would prefer to swing for the fences instead of staying in the safe zone where no emotion is evoked.”

Get to know Clara Jung:

tell us…

What or who has made the biggest impact on your career so far?

The clients from my first year of business. They referred me repeatedly to both their professional and personal networks. Having clients who trusted us early on in my career enabled us to flex our design muscles and design philosophy in a variety of different homes and spaces.

What sets your work apart?

We love incorporating pops of colour, whimsical elements and a dose of the traditional. We do take some “risks” especially with color and wallpaper. But is it really a risk when those unexpected elements bring you so much joy? I would prefer to swing for the fences instead of staying in the safe zone where no emotion is evoked.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The dream is free, but the hustle is sold separately. It’s so true. Unless you’ve undergone a large renovation of your home or worked in interior design, most people can’t fathom how many decisions go into a large project. Often interior designers are an integral part of this process.

In the early years of my career, I worked extremely hard and often for almost no pay to build up my portfolio. I remember carrying a 100-pound kitchen island up four flights of stairs alone since I had no team or handyman to help me. I almost died. No hyperbole.

How do you want your clients to feel in their space?

I’m a strong believer that beautiful and inviting spaces should be livable for all kinds of families and our work really illustrates that philosophy. At the end of the day, we help our clients attain their ideal living environments with an overlay of the Banner Day aesthetic. It gives me joy to see our clients’ personalities evidenced in our portfolio.

Your design crush?

Beata Heuman. I’ve followed for a while and love her blend of old, new and the ever so well-placed dose of whimsy.

What’s your favorite room, anywhere, of all time, and why?

Kids’ rooms by a large margin. You’re not only allowed but encouraged to make them playful and add color.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Travel has always been a great source of design inspiration. But even the varying textures of a flower arrangement or a special color combination in a textile have a way of inspiring me.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

I was in the Peace Corps after college in Nepal!

What’s the first thing someone should do when they move into a new space?

Observe how the natural light moves through the spaces through the day. This will inform paint color selection, furniture placement, etc.

What’s overrated in decorating?

Symmetry and perfection! Some of my clients absolutely can’t stand if there isn’t absolute symmetry in a room, tile pattern, etc. I say embrace the asymmetry, there is also beauty in that.

What do you think will be the defining design trend of 2022?

More maximalism and fun. I believe it’s an outgrowth of the uncertainty that we’ve been experiencing the past couple of years. There’s a yearning to finding a level of comfort, coziness and finding joy in the homes we’ve spent so much time in.

What’s your favorite and why?

Things to collect:

Vintage cookbooks

Paint color:

Golden Hour by Clare Paints

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) — Santa Clara County health officials announced Tuesday that all their COVID benchmarks have been reached, allowing the county to lift its indoor COVID masking mandate on March 2.

“What we can expect with this pandemic is we will have peaks and valleys,” County public health director Dr. Sara Cody told reporters. “So right now, we are coming into a lovely valley. We can all really enjoy that.”

READ MORE: Substation Fire Shuts Down South Hayward BART Station

Cody told reporters that the community spread of the virus has fallen significantly during the current lull to a level now safe enough for the county to finally join other Bay Area communities in lifting the mandate.

“We have met the metrics,” she said. “It’s a balance. At some point, we do need to transition from a requirement to a recommendation and in our county. We set metrics where we thought that was safe enough. It’s not completely safe, we still have community transmission of COVID, but we’ve reached a level where it feels safe enough to make the transition.”

She added that individual businesses can still require patrons to wear masks.

“Our trends are very strongly in a downward direction,” she told reporters. “The levels of community transmission have declined significantly over the last week and very significantly over the last two weeks. And the rate of decline continues to be fairly steep…All of our data is consistent, the level of community transmission in Santa Clara County is continuing to decrease.

READ MORE: Alameda Co. Health Officer To Issue Decision On Masking In Schools By End Of Week

When it applies to schools, Cody said the county discontinued local rules for schools and childcare settings in mid-2020 and has followed state guidance and rules since that time. County schools will now follow the state’s lead in lifting school mask requirements on March 11.

While the mandate will go away, Cody said she would encourage residents to continue to wear masks in crowded, public settings.

“While indoor masking in public spaces will no longer be required, it still makes sense to do,” she said. “Wearing a mask is part of working together to protect others, especially the most vulnerable among us.”

The three benchmarks Cody put in place were — a high vaccination rate, a decline in the hospitalization rate and dip below an average of 550 new cases a day for week.

On Tuesday, the 7-day average had fallen to 351 new cases and 244 county residents were hospitalized with COVID, less than half of the 533 residents that were hospitalized at the peak of the county’s winter surge in cases due to the omicron variant.

MORE NEWS: Apple Suspends All Product Sales In Russia Following Invasion Of Ukraine

In addition, 84.8 percent of county residents are vaccinated.

SAN JOSE (KPIX) — The deadline for some Santa Clara County emergency responders to get vaccinated or stay home is fast approaching, and if they don’t show up, there could be gaps in critical staffing positions.

A health regulation comes into effect on Tuesday for all workers in so-called “high-risk” jobs to provide evidence of vaccinations and booster shots or be unable to report to work. This includes medical personnel and firefighters.

CONTINUE READING: Curry heats up late to lead warriors over missiles, 122-108

“We really, really hope that people will go ahead and get their booster shots, it’s very simple,” Santa Clara District Attorney James Williams said.

The order has been threatening for months, and fire departments and other agencies are working to verify their employees are complying, but loopholes remain.

“We originally saw a vaccination rate of over 90 percent, and as such, we expect our refresher rates will be similar,” said Erica Ray, a spokeswoman for the San Jose Fire Department.

The department says 634 firefighters were fully vaccinated, leaving 42 short of the published workforce of 676. The department doesn’t know exactly how many vaccinated but not reinforced firefighters there are.

To fill the gap when firefighters can’t show up for work, the city plans to cover shifts with overtime.

CONTINUE READING: Heated debate expected at meetings to discuss proposed school closures in Oakland

“We relied on our members to schedule extra hours. So we are very
confident in our ability to provide these critical services to our community,” said Ray.

Last week, firefighters from multiple agencies raised concerns that it was dangerous to rely on overtime to cover shifts, urging supervisors to flout the health board and overturn the mandate.

“We have a critical staffing crisis in our rescue system and hospitals. The public is at risk now,” said San Jose Firefighter Barry Arata.

The county holds firefighters’ employers responsible for compliance with the job, not the firefighters themselves.

“We will be proactive in reaching out and making sure people have complied with the order,” Williams said.

The consequences of non-compliance can range from administrative offenses to fines.

SANTA CLARA (BCN) – Police from New Valley High School in Santa Clara found a pistol that resulted in the arrest of two students Thursday.

At around 10 a.m., two students were drawn into a fight that was separated from staff. It was at this point that staff noticed that one of the students was handing a bystander an item believed to be a weapon, according to an email sent to parents from the Santa Clara Unified School District at 2 p.m. would.

CONTINUE READING: 1st case of COVID-Omicron variant confirmed in Santa Clara County

The two arguing students and the bystander, also a student, were taken to the school office while the police arrived on campus.

The district said police arrived within three minutes, searched the students and found a handgun.

Two students were then arrested for illegal bringing weapons on campus.

“The situation was dealt with quickly and safely,” wrote the district in an email, “and the school resumed normal operations at 10.30 am.”

Students were in class at the time of the brawl and stayed there while police searched and arrested the students, the district wrote.

The district used the case not only to remind parents of the consequences of bringing a weapon, which could lead to arrest or deportation; but also the mental health resources available to students and their families.

“News like this may be of heightened concern, especially after the recent mass shootings in Michigan,” the district wrote to parents. “While we have implemented security measures and have a strong partnership with our local law enforcement and school staff, we cannot underestimate the toll we all have on the safety of our school.”

They directed students who may have been affected by the case to use CareSolace – an online resource with a live multilingual care concierge to connect people to counseling services.

Students and parents can also contact their school location for a wellness check-in with the district’s clinical staff.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – The new building in unincorporated Santa Clara County must have all-electric heaters and appliances, as well as connections for charging electric vehicles, according to a new ordinance passed by regulators on Tuesday.

The ordinance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions prohibits natural gas connections in new buildings and calls for the use of electricity for “water heating, space heating, cooking, drying clothes, indoor and outdoor fireplaces as well as decorative devices”. New homes must also have cabling for the installation of battery storage systems.

CONTINUE READING: Mountain View man who works with teenagers accused of indecent acts with teenagers; Wanted more victims

For residential and non-residential high-rise buildings as well as hotels and motels, the measure also requires the installation of solar power.

When charging electric vehicles, the requirements vary depending on the size of the building. Single-family houses and townhouses require at least two electric vehicle sockets. Today, larger non-residential projects require high-capacity charging systems and dedicated parking spaces for charging.

According to district officials, the measure goes beyond state requirements that encourage all-electric construction.

Supervisor Otto Lee said in a statement: “This is clearly in line with our climate protection plan and will help us achieve our goal of being 100% CO2 neutral by 2045.”

CONTINUE READING: Man approaches, threatens Berkeley teenage boy; Police are looking for surveillance material

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, officials claim that all-electric designs are generally less expensive because they don’t require natural gas lines, meters, and vents.

Jasneet Sharma, director of the district’s sustainability bureau, touted building electrification and the use of electric vehicles as a cost-effective, low-risk way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“That means improved indoor air quality and safety for our residents, fewer gas-powered vehicles on our roads and fewer pollutants in the atmosphere,” said Sharma.

Some exceptions apply, including hospitals and correctional facilities and buildings where all-electric devices are “not feasible”. Also excluded are certain accessory apartments (ADU) that are completely contained in a single-family house that is already piped for natural gas.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with a new infusion of resources,” said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo at a press conference Monday.

The county estimates that 600 families are currently homeless – so they will be the first to receive grants and be housed. A little less than 40 percent of these families live in San Jose, Liccardo said.

But even if the county is home to these 600 already homeless families, officials assume that 600 more families will become homeless in the next year – hence the number of 1200.

“We have to do more than just help the people who are outside,” said Ray Bramson, Destination Home’s chief operating officer. “These are hard-working parents, victims and survivors of domestic violence, pregnant mothers just looking for a home.”

Bramson went on to say that about 40 percent of homeless parents work full-time but cannot keep up with rising housing costs in the Bay Area.

And 70 percent of uninhabited families are single female heads of households, with 62 percent self-reporting that they have children in Santa Clara County, according to the district.

California homeless data found that Santa Clara has nearly 2,700 homeless residents under the age of 18 – the majority in all Bay Area counties.

“Every child in our ward deserves to thrive, and that starts with a home,” said district chairwoman Cindy Chavez.

And the numbers could be even higher as many women deliberately avoid being homeless for fear that their children will be taken away from them.

Supervisor Susan Ellenberg said she heard this story over and over during her tenure as supervisor.

During her tours of the local camps, she learned that unaccomodated mothers were hiding their newborns “to prevent them from receiving critical early care because they feared they would be branded as unfit parents and their children removed from them.”

“Being homeless is not a crime and living in poverty should not be a reason to separate families,” said Ellenberg. “Our residents should not live in constant fear of being torn away by their loved ones because of their housing situation or lack of it. We have an overdue obligation to remove the stigma. “

The aim of HEADING HOME is to achieve a “functional zero” in five years, ie the number of housing agencies for families in the district is higher than the number of families who become homeless.

To achieve this goal, the county and its partners would need to focus on four main components, according to local leaders.

The first is to find landlords willing to take part in the 10 year home voucher program to accommodate a homeless family.

These coupons come directly from the federal government. Most will be a fixed market rate, with some flexibility to allocate additional funding, Branson said.

The second aspect is to expand the county rapid relocation program, which offers temporary subsidies and case management, to 200 more families annually.

And the third aspect is to expand the county’s homeless prevention strategies to 2,500 households by 2025.

Funding for expanding such programs comes from a variety of sources, Bramson said. Governor Gavin Newsom’s $ 12 billion investment to tackle homelessness brings a new inflow of money from the state. The county also receives additional federal dollars as well as support from nonprofits, philanthropists, and other private entities.

“Right now unprecedented funding and resources are coming from the state,” said Bramson. “We don’t know exactly what all the dollars will look like because they come to us, but we know there will be a void. So we need more than just government funding to make this possible. “

And the final aspect of the HEADING HOME plan is to continue creating affordable and supportive housing by funding Measure A.

Bramson, along with local voters, called on the community to donate to support these efforts. The call to action, however, was aimed primarily at landlords.

“(The vouchers mean) less sales for your properties and a stable home for new tenants,” said Ellenberg. “So please look out for more information from the landlord.”

The supervisor went on to say that more information about the program will be released in the coming weeks. Until then, the district is working with non-profit housing companies to identify a location for the 10-year residential vouchers and immediately start placing the families who are not housed in homes.

SAN JOSE (BCN) – The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors has approved the American Rescue Plan Act stimulus fund allocation to provide up to $ 2,500 in bonuses to county employees for their work during the pandemic.

In Tuesday’s vote, approximately $ 76 million from the county’s first tranche of the $ 187 million ARPA funding will be used to make one-time payments to nearly all of the county’s 22,000 employees through December 3 of this year Afford.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: Atmospheric river crashes on land; Flood warning for Napa, Sonoma Counties

The county is expected to receive its second tranche of $ 187 million in ARPA funding in May 2022.

The only district employees excluded from receiving the rewards the district calls Hero Pay are the five district managers and the district executive Jeff Smith.

That means senior positions like the sheriff, district attorney, and county assessor – who each earned between $ 330,000 and $ 460,000 in total compensation for fiscal 2019 – also receive a bonus of $ 2,500.

This is an idea that apparently made Supervisor Otto Lee uncomfortable and could explain his decision to abstain. Had he voted for it, the Hero Pay would have been unanimously approved by the Board of Directors.

“I have concerns about how this came about … I don’t want to vote for a $ 2,500 bonus for myself as an elected officer,” Lee said. “I think for so many reasons the amount that has been allocated here seems very generous, but in some ways it is too generous.”

After Lee raised reservations, Supervisor Cindy Chavez made a change to exclude the five district managers from the bonus payment – a move that was supported by all district managers.

Lee also urged employees to create a way for county employees to opt out of Hero Pay for those who are uncomfortable or who don’t need the $ 2,500.

CEO Mike Wassermann attempted to extend Hero Pay to Smith due to his “Herculean” efforts during the pandemic, but Smith graciously refused to accept it.

As of this writing, full-time workers and county part-timers will receive a prorated amount based on the full-time equivalent status of the part-timers and the additional hours worked by the employee.

CONTINUE READING: Atmospheric river winds lashed through the bay; Toppling dozens of drought-weakened trees

Independent In-Home Supportive Services providers receive a $ 500 bonus from the county to top up the additional $ 500 they receive from the state.

Ellenberg found that $ 2,500 is double what other similarly populated counties give in Hero Pay.

Smith said the reason for the amount was because he believed it was what superiors wanted, and joked that the board was “twice as progressive”.

“We had a strong feeling that everyone in the county was actually doing the maximum possible vigorous engagement in responding to the pandemic,” said Smith. “So administratively, we didn’t feel that we could take on a group or a particular job or activity, and that made more money than any other.”

Smith also pointed out that ARPA funding calls for some to be used for Hero Pay, so providing these bonuses is in line with the federal government’s idea of using those dollars.

“We’re just pursuing the intent of the bill,” said Smith.

The district also decides on the granting of bonuses for the approximately 3,000 “additional workers” who did not have a regular schedule and instead supported the district’s efforts at times.

Additional assistants, often referred to as shift workers, can be found in “pretty much any department that does a variety of things,” including nurses, clerks, secretaries, and social workers, Smith said.

“We still have a formula to work out,” continued the district executive. “We couldn’t agree on what we would agree on.”

Smith said the county will have to consult with several unions to ensure everyone is on board with Hero Pay before the money is distributed in December.
