A $25 million project at a Calpine Corp. power plant near San Francisco will test a technology that could capture 95% of a plant’s carbon emissions, a process California officials say is critical to the state’s climate fight.

Carbon capture technology provokes fierce criticism from many environmentalists who consider it a license to keep burning fossil fuels rather than switch to cleaner energy sources. But at the unveiling of the Calpine project Friday, California’s top climate change regulator said some fossil fuel plants will still be needed to keep electricity service reliable as the state moves to eliminate its net carbon emissions by 2045.

North Tahoe Fire Department officials are warning residents of increased gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning in the area due to heavy snow blocking air vents and natural gas meters.

Since the beginning of the year, “danger calls” — related to gas leaks, carbon monoxide and other related emergencies — accounted for nearly “20% of all non-EMS incidents,” according to the North Tahoe and Meeks Bay Fire Safety Districts.

“Firefighters of North Tahoe are responding to a significant increase in CO emergencies across the region, many of which result in positive CO readings upon arrival, with occupants/patients presenting with symptoms of varying severity,” the districts said in a statement.

Many of these incidents, firefighters said, are the result of heavy snow accumulation on incinerator vents, underground vents, and improper or snow-covered home generator ventilation systems.

There has also been a surge in gas leaks from underground tanks, above-ground propane lines and underground natural gas meters affected by recent “repeated freeze-thaw cycles,” officials added.

According to fire department districts, gas leaks have also been reportedly linked to roof snow dumping and house snow clearing operations.

Firefighters recommend residents who want to clear snow from their properties not to stack snow around tanks, gauges, regulators, or piping, not to use sharp tools or force when removing snow from pipes, regulator tanks, and cylinders, and not to run tanks dry.

Tanks, authorities added, should be filled when they reach 30% to 40% and have a clear, accessible route for gas suppliers.

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) – A broken HVAC heater on the roof filled a school in Santa Rosa with carbon monoxide fumes Thursday morning, making students sick and forcing the building to be evacuated, authorities said.

According to the Santa Rosa Fire Department, the crews were dispatched to Bridge Church at 301 Fulton Road at 10:26 a.m.

Arriving firefighters found an orderly evacuation in the two-story building that houses both the church and the Grace Christian Academy.

Students and teachers at the school informed the fire department that there was an odor in the building. Numerous students and several staff complained of symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon monoxide.

Firefighters used a 4-gas monitor to determine the presence of carbon monoxide in several classrooms and hallways in the building.

A total of 12 students and two staff members complained of symptoms related to carbon monoxide exposure, were treated, and were released at the scene.

Upon further investigation by firefighters and PG&E crews, it was found that the source of the carbon monoxide was an HVAC unit on the school roof that provides heat to several classrooms.

The HVAC unit was covered with tarpaulin due to a water leak during the recent rain. When the HVAC unit was turned on to provide heat, the tarpaulin was preventing the clean air from circulating properly.

After the tarpaulin was removed, the HVAC unit was working properly. The rest of the HVAC units on the roof have been tested and found to be correct.

On Earth Day, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said she would move the city’s timeline up for carbon neutrality.

“We are leading the way in addressing climate change-related issues with our carbon emissions and other challenges we face, and we will continue to lead,” she said.

According to Breed, CleanPowerSF already supplies 380,000 customers with clean energy and is now able to provide 100% renewable energy to all citizens within the next four years.

“This is six years ahead of the goal we originally set,” said Breed. “It is really remarkable.”

Breed announced this at the Chase Center, which is green certified. This means that it has already used 100% renewable energy, recycled water and met the national benchmarks for green buildings.

Kim Stone, general manager of the Chase Center, urges others to join efforts to combat climate change.

“These are high goals, but they are achievable goals,” she said. “So, other private companies listening, I encourage you to join us.”

Breed urges other cities to come on board as well.

“We show how it is possible for others to follow,” she said.
