SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to move the headquarters of SpaceX and social media company X from California to Texas.

Musk posted on X on Tuesday that he plans to move SpaceX from Hawthorne, California, to the company's rocket launch site, called Starbase, in Texas. X will move from San Francisco to Austin.

He called a new law signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday that prohibits school districts from requiring their staff to inform parents of their child's change of gender identity “the last straw.”

“I made it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote.

Tesla, where Musk is CEO, moved its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin in 2021.

Musk also stated that he changed his residence from California to Texas, where there is no state income tax.

SpaceX builds and launches its giant Starship rockets at the southern tip of Texas at Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border, at a site called Starbase. The company's smaller Falcon 9 rockets launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Southern California.

It is located just below South Padre Island and about 20 miles from Brownsville.

Billionaire Elon Musk says he is moving the headquarters of SpaceX and social media company X from California to Texas. Musk posted on X on Tuesday that he plans to move SpaceX from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas. X will move from San Francisco to Austin. He called a new law signed Monday by California Gov. Gavin Newsom that prevents school districts from requiring their staff to inform parents of their child's gender identity change “the last straw.” “I made it clear to Gov. Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote. Tesla, where Musk is CEO, moved its corporate headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin in 2021. “Gavin Newsom's anti-parent agenda isn't just bad for families — it's now seriously damaging California's economy,” California Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher said in a statement. “With the highest unemployment rate in the country, you'd think our governor would do anything possible to protect jobs.” Instead, he's pandering to extremists in his party by excluding parents from their children's education and driving even more companies to move to other states.” Musk has also said he has changed his residency from California to Texas, which has no state income tax. SpaceX builds and launches its giant Starship rockets from the southern tip of Texas at Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border, at a site called Starbase. The company's smaller Falcon 9 rockets launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Southern California. It's just below South Padre Island and about 20 miles from Brownsville. Newsom responded by sharing a disparaging post Trump had previously made about Musk on Truth Social, then adding, “You bent the knee.” For more coverage of the top news stories from California, click here | Download our app.

Top line

SpaceX founder Elon Musk said Tuesday that the aerospace company, along with X (formerly Twitter), will move its headquarters from California to Texas after California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law preventing schools from requiring their employees to notify parents if students wish to use different pronouns – which Musk said was the “final straw that broke the camel's back.”

Key data

Musk announced the company's move in a post on X, saying the reason for the move was “this and the many other laws before it that attack both families and businesses.”

Newsom signed the Support Academic Futures and Educators for Today's Youth Act (Safety Act) on Monday, which prevents a school employee from “requiring disclosure of information related to the student's sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression to another person without the student's consent.”

With this law, California becomes the first state in the U.S. to ban a policy that forces schools to out students by requiring them to notify parents if a student wants to use a different name or pronoun than the one on their birth certificate, The Mercury News reported.

In a follow-up tweet, Musk said he made it clear to Newsom “about a year ago that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children.”

Musk said the headquarters will move from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, a SpaceX complex and launch site near Brownsville, Texas.

X will move its headquarters from San Francisco to Austin, Musk added, saying, “I'm tired of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building.”

Key quote

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a post about X that Musk's decision to move SpaceX to the state “solidifies Texas' position as a leader in space exploration.”

Main critics

Newsom responded to Musk's tweets on Tuesday night with a screenshot of an old Truth Social post by Donald Trump in which the former president criticized Musk, saying, “I could have said, 'Get on your knees and beg,' and he would have done it…” Newsom posted the screenshot and said, “You got on your knees.”

Forbes Rating

Forbes estimates that Musk had a net worth of around $254.4 billion as of Tuesday afternoon, making him the richest person in the world.

Important background

Musk's SpaceX, founded in 2002, has long been headquartered in California. Musk started the company with money he made from selling PayPal, but it struggled before winning a $1.5 billion contract from NASA in 2008, Business Insider reported. The private aerospace company designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft and was recently valued at around $210 billion in a planned sale of shares on the secondary market. Musk bought X, founded in California in 2006 as Twitter, for $44 billion in 2022 after uncertainty about whether the sale would go ahead. After buying it, Musk fired the CEO and much of the staff and set about making it more of a “super app” that could offer users a wide range of products and services on one platform.

tangent

Tesla, another Musk company, moved its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin in 2021 — although Musk announced two years later that its new engineering headquarters would be in Silicon Valley. Musk moved the electric car maker's headquarters from Silicon Valley to Texas to bring it closer to the Starbase launch site. As of 4:15 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Musk had not yet tweeted that Tesla's engineering headquarters would be moving.

SAN FRANCISCO – Billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to move the headquarters of SpaceX and social media company X from California to Texas.

Several media sites confirmed Thursday that X (formerly Twitter) is looking to sublease its 74,000-square-foot headquarters at the corner of 1355 Market Street and 1 Tenth Street, suggesting the location could soon be outside of San Francisco.

That X might relocate outside of San Francisco has long been rumored, dating back to when Musk officially purchased the social media site for $44 billion in October 2022. After purchasing the company, many in Texas, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, urged him to move the company there, similar to what he did with his electric car company Tesla. Many at the company also began to question whether X had been in San Francisco for long, as Musk often clashed with San Francisco politics. The subsequent mass layoffs at X only made people more concerned about a move.

In May 2023, Musk began hinting more seriously at such a move, and city actions against the company, such as requiring it to remove a new sign from its headquarters, only raised fears once again. In May of this year, he remained noncommittal about remaining in the city and dodged questions about whether he planned to keep X in San Francisco. That month, Musk and X made their biggest move yet by getting a company to sublease all of its office space in the city, hinting at a possible move from its headquarters, where they had been based since 2011.

A possible step for X

Although the space has not yet been listed, real estate firm JLL confirmed Thursday that X has put its 74,000-square-foot headquarters at 1355 Market Street and 1 Tenth Street up for sublease for an undisclosed amount. They did not say whether or not the company is looking for new offices in San Francisco, and hinted that X could decide to stay there part-time. Although X has previously backed off potential moves, the last time the company only considered a move across the bay to Oakland.

If X were to move out, it would likely derail San Francisco's plans to reach stable office inventory this year and prevent the city from having an even worse office inventory. In the second quarter of 2024, San Francisco slipped into the category of having 37% of all the city's office space vacancy. However, thanks to the AI boom, the city has started to stabilize this year. If X were to move out, San Francisco would likely not recover for the rest of the year because there is suddenly so much space for sale.

“The sublease announcement is very disturbing,” Anthony Ferry, a San Francisco technology consultant, told the Globe on Friday. “At least if you work for X or are in San Francisco. It indicates a major change of some kind. Best case scenario, they'll just move to other locations in the city or work from home even more. Worst case scenario, X will no longer be in the city.”

“The state would lose a lot of taxpayer money if they left California. They could hope that X would look for cheaper office space in the Bay Area, or even LA. SpaceX is down there, after all. But that's wishful thinking. If anything, Musk will probably be in Texas, probably in the Austin area. You know, but we just don't know. First, we need to find out if they're staying at their current headquarters in any capacity. Second, people need to ask Musk what his plans are now that the cat is out of the bag. But he's not talking, and there's no indication otherwise.”

“What is certain is that something big is happening.”

Further information on X-subletting is expected shortly.

A fast-growing Southern California construction company has expanded into Sonoma County, serving a market familiar to the founder.

San Diego-based Same Day Heating, Cooling, Plumbing opened a second location in Windsor in January, according to an announcement Friday. The 5,000-square-foot location at 600 American Way employs 22 people, the company told the Business Journal.

Owner Jonathan Winterstellar was general manager of One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning in Santa Rosa for a year and later held the same position for four and a half years at the company now called Moore Home Services, also in Santa Rosa, the Journal reported. He founded Same Day in early 2019 in his hometown of San Diego and left Moore shortly after it was acquired by a private equity fund in 2019, according to the press release and Journal reporting.

“I am thrilled to be back in the North Bay, a region I know and love,” Wintersteller said in the announcement. “At Same Day, we're not just about providing service; we want to create a different culture in the HVAC industry. Our focus is on building personal relationships with our customers and creating a work environment where our team is valued. I look forward to bringing that ethos to the North Bay region.”

Same Day ranked 84th on Inc. magazine's list of fastest-growing independent companies in the Pacific Rim in 2024, with revenue growth of 165% during 2021-2023. With the new Windsor location, the company employs 94 people.

Moore made the Inc. 5000 list for the sixth and final time in 2019, ranking 1,999th with three-year revenue growth of 201%. He finished 2018 with revenue of $27.6 million and 140 employees, the Journal reported.

The company is led by President and CEO Zachary Johnson, who most recently served as general manager for Republic Services' California and Utah operations, according to Same Day. Johnson holds a master's degree in sports management and an MBA from the University of Michigan.

Jeff Quackenbush covers wine, construction and real estate. Reach him at jquackenbush@busjrnl.com or 707-521-4256.

Capital One Financial Corp. will relocate its San Francisco offices to 100 California St., securing 40,000 square feet of space. The new space will be about one-third the size of its current location at 201 3rd St.

A JLL team of senior managing directors Matt Shewey and Ted Davies and vice president Carlye Parker represented building owner Pembroke. The move to 100 California includes both a direct lease with Pembroke and a sublease from cleantech company Stem, the San Francisco Business Times reported.

JLL is working with Pembroke to implement further improvements to a modernization program at 100 California. Modernizations include a revitalized and renovated facade of the podium building, including an enhanced restaurant identity and a new dedicated outdoor seating area. Pembroke and JLL are working to find a new restaurant operator for the 6,000-square-foot space.
New fitness facilities will be added and a new flexible conference center will be created where tenants can come together and collaborate.
